  • On this episode of The J-Turn, Jessi Lang heads to K&N with the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z51 to run it on the dyno and see just how much horsepower the C7's V-8 produces at the wheels. She also gets a tour of K&N's multimillion dollar facility where they create every type of air filter under the sun. K&N is eager to get their hands on the C7 as they've already been hard at work creating a prototype air filter for the car. How much extra power will K&N be able to extract from the all-new Corvette?

    K&N' filters do flow almost 50% more air than a stock filter.
    They also filter 50% LESS the dirt.
    Do yourself a favor and buy a larger filter, get more airflow while filtering dirt.

      omar fuller Those HP gains are from deleting the factory resonator box.

      omar fuller Refractory resonator boxes inhibit air flow to meet sound regulations.
      My Colorado picked up 1.1mpg by deleting the box.
      same goes for LS1 trans Ams picking up 14RWHP by a resonator deleted SLP LID.

      Stephen Bagnell Now adays car makers are not letting any mpg getting away from something as stupid as an air filter or an air box. Gains will always be within the margin of error. 400whp car? 4 hp is 1%. You *might* see 4 whp difference from an intake supposing it doesn't fuck with the maf sensor, or the ecu doesn't tune itself back where it was after a few miles. That's 1%. Go on a cooler day and stock will probably dyno higher...

    Well said Xmvw2X, most production cars were designed with paper filters, then K&N came out with their revolutionary filter which actually does work! The trick is (if you didn't know) for cheap HP is change to a K&N filter which is reusable and get a free flow exhaust for 10-15 HP. Btw my camaro caught fire at the gas station( cause i flooded the carb!) they had to use a fire extinguisher directly on my K&N but I was able to drive it home within a few minutes & the filter is still on the car

    I've never been a huge K&N fan, but I love that they are made in the US of A. Would have loved to hear about why different dyno's produce different numbers and how you decide what gear to do the pulls in. With it being a 7 speed wouldn't 5th gear be closer to 1 to 1 for the dyno pull?

    I say this. And I hope other people who don't like jessi (I'm not too fond of her myself at times) cheer her on to try to BREAK THE SHELL of professionalism that keeps the inner gearhead contained. She needs to let it loose and she won't be able to with the pressure of us youtubers. So I say CHEER and PRAY that I'm either completely correct in my assessment or totally wrong and she resigns. Either way if she's really got it in her our support will make it bloom into something beautiful.

    So cheer. Hopefully she'll understand it's not personal and HOPEFULLY she'll "unpretty" herself a bit to where we can see HER not just how pretty she is. The ECU would compensate for that with the stock maps. All it needs to know is the airflow has been increased, checks the map add that amount of fuel, validate with EGT check. A/F ratio don't get changed but you now have more air so more fuel can be added hence more power.

    No, the stock fiter is designed for a certain amount of air filtration (for engine protection in a variety of environments), their filter just filter less the air, thus more airflow.

      @bazzie85 10 лет назад

      look, to be fair, even if that air filter genuinely did make a gain of 15 hp, they still wouldn't have shown us the actual numbers. They mentioned very clearly that the filter is still a "prototype". So it would not to be in their interest to reveal anything useful before they are ready for it, otherwise a competitor might beat them to it. Maybe when the filter is in production and available for sale we can then truly see whether this is truth or a lie.

    • @esqueue
      @esqueue 10 лет назад

      Basel Kader It would be crazy for GM to leave 15 horsepower trapped in an inefficient air filter.Modern vehicles gain almost 0 horsepower by filters. If there is a gain, you have to sacrifice something along the lines of increased noise or decrease filtration. Since it's just a air filter, there will be no noise increase so you are just decreasing the filtration which is bad.

    Nice gains! I wish I could have dyno'd my 2015 Infiniti Q50 3.7 RWD after adding dual drop-in K&N Air Filters. Surprisingly, I and everybody who rode in my Q50 noticed a pretty big difference in acceleration after these K&N's were installed... Especially from 4000-7500+ rpm's! It felt like the difference betwwen going WOT in a car at 30 degrees versus going WOT at 90 degrees. In a 3,600 pound car, you won't feel anything under at least a 10 HP gain, I'm guessing. I truly feel like my Q50 picked up 15-20 HP with these two K&N's. Just my opinion. I now have custom twin long tube CAI's, and other than the louder sound now, it only felt slightly quicker than it did with the K&N's before I EcuTek tuned it right after... Now my Q50 really moves. But for just a couple of drop-in air filters, I was extremely impressed with K&N! Nice work guys!

  • @JanMichaelFranklin
    @JanMichaelFranklin 11 лет назад

    K&N just made the filter. The rest of the intake system is all AEM. The design of the tubing for the intake is where the real R&D comes in. Using the best filter possible eliminates that as a weak point.

  • @Roughneck-offroad
    @Roughneck-offroad 11 лет назад

    consider that fact that the factory designed filter is designed for keeping particles out of the engine, not for flow, this is a tighter tolerance engine so clean is important for longevity, hence a restrictive filter, most new car come with a cold air intake from the factory now days, combine that with displacement and this is reasonable for a 15 hp gain, however on a smaller engine you would not see this much

  • @mkygod
    @mkygod 11 лет назад

    It depends on how restrictive the manufacturer wants makes the car. The speed limiter is another example of this; maybe for warranty/reliability reasons. Also, Chevy will being doing more powerful versions of the C7 in the future, so its not far-fetched to say that they want to keep some of that power underwraps. I think their goal with the Stingray was to keep the power neatly between the C6 Grand Sport and the C6 Z06.

  • @Roughneck-offroad
    @Roughneck-offroad 11 лет назад

    most manufacturers claim flywheel power or engine output, it allows them to claim higher power, and there is a different wheel hp number depending on transmission, this way they can claim one power number as opposed to several different number depending on transmission

  • @richarddjohanson

    K&N used my 08 C6 to make the CAI For LS3. My 09 C6 A6 Auto on DYNOJET Made 378.86 Max Power and 384.06 Max Torque at 80.98 F, 28.91 in Hg, Humidity: 16%. Real world it turns about the same times with the stock CAI with the Stock filter or with the Z06 stock CIA with the Stock filter or the K&N CIA. The K&N Stock filter replacement filter in the OEM CAI also seemed to make the same times and MPH. The K&N system did give me a little better time, may be a 1/2 a tenth and 1/2 M.P.H. stock car.

    Power to the wheels is whp, bhp (base hp) is the power at the crank of the engine before drivetrain loss. All manufacturers spec the power at the crank.

    Chevy makes the best sport cars on earth in my opinion. For 65,000, you can walk away with a car comparable to that of Ferrari 458's, 110,000 vipers, and even 150,000-200,000 gt40's. You give GM 150,000...watch out guys, Ford gt's, mustangs, and vipers will all get smoked. Look what gm did in 2009 with the zr1...holy shit.

    It's not surprising really. The filter area isn't all that massive for the engine size, so there will be some level of restriction with the change. Chevrolet engineers met their design goals with paper, but there's often room for improvement. I've owned a variety of vehicles and have used K&N on pretty much all of them. I've only had one car that did not show an improvement but only because the filter area vs engine size was quite significant, basically double what you'd normally expect.

    Usually when a manufacturers put a limit on the vehicle its because of limitations they discovered or from a specific vehicle part/s. e.g. Most times its as simple as the speed limit of the tires. Sometimes it may be for engine or transmission longevity and they limit the vehicle for warranty purposes.

    displacement plays a big factor as well as factory air box design and filters very from factory, wile gaining 15 hp from a simple filter upgrade is possible most cars will never get that kind of gain, this vvt ohv direct injection motor however it is reasonable to see this kind of gain simply due to displacement and filter restriction ,intake design has significantly improved on factory cars in the last 10 years, due to the after market explosion

  • @Roughneck-offroad
    @Roughneck-offroad 11 лет назад

    that depends on climate, the gains are only due to slightly more air flow and air temp entering engine, colder air is more dense wich results in more compression, the gains in a warm air intake vs stock depend on how restricting the factory filters are, displacement is a factor as wellwell you will see minimal gains on most cars 15 hp is not typical, 2-5 is a more reasonable gain, on forced induction the gain is only from air temp, spool time will be affected by restriction, not power output tho

    they always quote the engine (crank) hp, the hp number you get on a dyno is the wheel hp. Assuming that the 460 hp from Chevy is correct, that means that there is a 13% loss of hp to the wheels, which for a rear wheel drive (rwd) car is really good. I usually expect a 16-17% loss on a rwd car.

    i think it just drops filtration rate. then air flow sensor (or map sensor whatever) measures more air quantity than stock filter and ECU shoot more fuel for ideal air/fuel ratio. as a result, it has more power.

    You realize modern cars already take advantage of cold air. If you noticed the filter was all the way on the side of the car, probably sucking air in from the fender. CAI's on most cars don't do much, but a better breathing filter can help a lot.

    My point is that if it was so easy to make 15 HP that all GM needed to do was put on a different air filter, they probably would have done it. It's cheaper than better cams, intake manifold, exhaust, etc. I really can't imagine they would spend millions of dollars developing the engine like it is to make as much HP vs fuel mileage and then dump a cheapo air filter on knowing they could have made the same power and saved more money elsewhere.

    I have used their filters on several of my cars. I've never seen anybody gain 15hp on an N/A engine from a drop-in filter. From a full CAI? Sure.. on some cars. K&N filters have even been shown to lose power on the Mustang GT's 5.0 liter.

    Filter companies always make huge claims like this. Whenever people actually test this stuff on a shop dyno, they're lucky to get more than 7 or 8hp out of a whole cold air intake setup. I don't believe that a filter, in the factory airbox produced over 10hp, let alone 15.
    When the 350z first came out, companies were claiming 12 to 14hp+ for intakes. I personally witnessed dyno runs where the BEST performing model made 7hp, the other 2 brands tested only made 4hp,

    Well on a car with that much horsepower, it's not that uncommon to unlock that much power from simple upgrades like a high flow filter. Now if you're getting a 10-15hp increase on your stock Honda Civic from a filter, then that is a lot harder to believe.

    I dont know about that because she likes manuals as well. The thing is though, is that automatics have gotten so much better in this day and age then what they used to be. Would I buy an automatic corvette over a manual? No. Would I buy a corvette that is DCT semi automated manual over a traditional manual? Yes.
