2014 Corvette Stingray Reactions! Plus Roadkill Muscle Truck & AMG Wagons - Wide Open Throttle Ep 76

- Опубликовано: 18 сен 2024
- On this episode of Wide Open Throttle, Angus MacKenzie, David Freiburger, Ed Loh, Ron Kiino and Jonny Lieberman sit down to talk about the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. Now that the C7 Corvette has been unleashed on the automotive media, the guys are able to discuss more about the driving characteristics and performance of Chevrolet's new halo car. Did Chevy get it right with the C7?
Also on the table is the latest episode of Roadkill in which Freiburger and Finnegan drag race a 1974 Chevy shortbed stepside beater powered by an all-aluminum Corvette LS6. Rounding out the discussion is talk of AMG Wagons and why America doesn't seem to share Europe's infatuation with high-horsepower wagons.
Wide Open Throttle appears every Thursday on the Motor Trend channel.

Love the beers and drinks on the table. It's hard to talk cars without good drinks.
I'm 20 years old and i'm loving these throwback cars. Stingray means a lot to me lol. Tradition never ends!
The wagon bit is EXACTLY why I love all of you guys at motor trend!!!
That's great to hear! Thanks for letting us know!
I love these discussions, they have to have a HOTROD guy in them and some tech talk - bring em back. WOT BACK
Never in my life would I have ever thought wagons were cool, until I watched Johnny talk about the CTS-V Wagon, and other various AMG wagons,... now I kinda REALLY want one... :)
Many thanks, TuffMY99. Hope you'll stay tuned!
Fantastic! We're so glad to hear it!
im 22 years old and i am familiar with the stingray name and im glad to see it return. in my opinion the best corvettes hail from the 60s
I'm 15 and my favorite corvette has always been the 67 stingray. When they announced the new corvette as "stingray", I was very excited.
I personally think every bit of the C7 looks awesome from top to bottom, and from front to back! It looks great and is fully functional. Direct Injection sounds lovely too along with that variable valve timing and cylinder deact.
I remember when the Chris Bangle BMWs came out, I thought they were disturbing, but after a while I had to recognize how amazingly beautiful they were, 5 series especially. Same goes with the Corvette, it's sharp, best design since the '67 in my opinion.
For the record: I LIKE the back-end on the new Stingray!!
I absolutely love this, please keep up these great discussions!
I think that Angus, Johnny and Ed have to be a part of the panel at all times. Give or take Carlos too.
I love the five drive modes it offers. I think For what the C7 has to offer with other GT style sports cars, it is a bargain compared to other higher priced super cars. Mid to upper $60,000s with all its handling and driving characteristics. I want one.
I really love the looks of the new Vette. Handles and performance is unbelievable.
As a Brit, and a fan of classic Americana, I LOVE the look of the new Corvette.
I'd totally buy a badass station wagon. The coolest one I ever saw was a custom 2002 Pontiac Trans Am wagon!
Thanks guys for taking the time to actually talk and not rush the round table. The one you guys did with the Viper vs Merc was short and uninformative everyone took one turn to make a point and it was rushed and over with, so many things that could have been talked about. It's a waste of time to even get everyone together. This one was much better :) everyone really seemed like they wanted to be here thank you good job
Very good episode. I've been waiting to hear some solid information about Stingray performance.
Love the new corvette, haven't seen one that I liked since the 1982 corvette, the year before I was born. Ive always wanted a corvette, one that harkened back to my neighbor's stingray. I can finally do so and have very little if any sacrifices
I'm a wagon guy all the way...agree 100%. Wish we had more Audi Allroads, an air suspension gives you everything in an SUV, without an SUV!!! (of course they were prone to problems :)
I really like the new lights. They look awesome.
Carlos was unfortunately on location in Europe shooting 2 new episodes of Ignition at the time of taping.
I've looked into it a lot and if I were to get a 392 I'd get a procharger, custom comp cams, ported heads, 90mm TB, 1-7/8" headers + catback and then Pedders Track 2 package with XA coilovers to finish it off. If I was feeling serious I'd even like to add on Classic Design Concepts full widebody and some forgestars with nitto NT05 rubber.
There was actually a guy here in Sweden, who took the chassi and drivetrain from a corvette and bolted on a modified widebody-like Saab 9-3 body. In my opinion, one of the most badass wagons ever..!
I am subscribed to about 10 different car "shows" and I have to say that WOT is by far my favorite. Keep up the good work.
Haters gon' Hate. The new Corvette is an amazing ride, in all forms. Having been lucky enough to drive a few of them, I'm sold. Now for the affording it part.... Yup, stuck driving my econo-box. Nobody ever talks about the dual mode exhaust either, I'm wondering whats up with that. just roll the switch to the right, and the exhaust is instantly scary enough to get the police called on you. Just my .02
True
+Xentenon wow......just because you have a "different accent" doesn't mean its right. Ebonics for the win. O.o
I'm liking the Stingray. It looks pretty sweet. More sophisticated than previous vettes.
I love Motortrend and all of the videos, but here's how it is for me. The Corvette: Cool, I'd totally drive one, and grin ear to ear while doing it. The AMG: A very different cool, but would still love driving one. The 73 Chevy: I have had numerous rides built in the same spirit, and loved every second, did all my own wrenching, and never worried about scratches. Even at it's $45k base price, the Corvette is completely out of touch with my life (31yo, married, no kids, above average income)
Had a Chev Celebrity Eurosport Wagon back in 89. Loved it.
Really good episode guys. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Talking about the looks of the new Corvette, I was very fortunate to see both a Lamborghini Murcielago and a 2014 Corvette Stingray. The Lambo was cool to see and was impressive (especially in north central Iowa), but when I saw the Corvette I got chills. I can't think of another time where I got chills seeing a car.
Oh, and I own a Corvette myself and a rear drive Bimmer, so yes I have experience with sports cars and how they handle. When it comes to racing, like I've said, AWD is easier to control. To an inexperienced driver AWD seems easier, but to experienced drivers there's little difference.
As I'm watching this my dad goes and get the mail. He comes back and hand me the September edition of MT which has the C7 on the cover. Awesome timing!
swap lago for kiino and you've got yourself an effing show. love the quirky insightful comments from lieberman, the PO'd candor of loh, freiburger being freiburger, and angus the elder statesman. such a great mix of automotive opinions and perspectives!
I don't understand how people don't like the new Corvette I think it's sexy as hell. I also think it was an evolution of design rather then revolution, like the pickups as opposed to the Impalla. I personally can't see it as anything but a Corvette but that's probably because I've been looking at pictures of it since last year.
Vette stingray looks awesome. I am not a chevy man but this one you can't deny it
One of the best episodes so far.. Corvette, chevy truck and an amg wegon!!
From what I've heard its actually the flimsy plastic intake manifold that causes the 392 (and 5.7) to heat soak very easily. The thing is you can run the procharger on fairly low boost and make 700bhp on the stock engine with custom tuning, and with a few more upgrades 750 is easily in reach :O
I'm an American and I LOOOOOOOVE the 507 wagon. I've said for a long time I want a Subaru legacy gt wagon lowered with cool wheels like you see in Australia all the time
I'm one of the old guys that had vettes in the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's. You know what guys, new shit is way better than old shit. This thing looks and runs great. The only thing I would do to the exterior is paint all the black vents, rear end and whatever else, body color. And take that bar out of the grill.
Project cars are, by their very nature, never complete. The same as a work of art: no piece of art is ever finished, it is merely abandoned.
There will ALWAYS be *something* which, although it does not NEED doing, you want to do to it, or more precisely "for it". You tell yourself you're doing it for the car itself, rather than for you.
I live in Tokyo and have an AWD '99 Subaru Legacy GT bi-turbo sport wagon and I totally agree with these guys, wagons are awesome when they have power! My Subie is great cuz I can go on road trips with friends, pack my crap in the back, and still go fast. Also, the 2.0 boxer motor with the 2 stage twin turbos is sweet cuz at 2 grand the first turbo kicks in, then once you push it to 4500, the 2nd spools up and you're flyin in the fastlane. America needs to embrace sports wagons not SUV's!!!
I enjoy the entire MT cast, keep up the great work. You all do a wonderful job, Everyone has their own personality and it seems nicely unscripted. Much Respect MotorTrend
"People have no imagination." Truer words were never spoken.
HP Tuners makes a great tuning package for GM DI engines - NOW. I've been tweaking my DI Ecotec in my Saturn Sky and am approaching 400HP out of 122 turbo'd cubic inches. I'm pretty sure the same software could be applied to the Corvette, Chevy/GMC pickup or the Cadillac DI engines.
I'm always so surprised by the conversation about the new Corvette's looks, especially the taillights. The car is a work of art. It's simply beautiful. When form meets function, or some other such nonsense that heretofore only the Germans could claim. It doesn't look like what came before and that is a good thing. You'll get no complaints from me on the aesthetics.
The younger generation just wants a car that plays loud music and sounds like a total beast. I would know, I am part of that generation you are talking about. It's about good looking fast and loud cars. If I wanted my car to crush every GTR fanboy on the track, I'd wait for the C7 ZR1.
Another great episode of WOT. Lot of great discussions and commentary.
Love your vids, can you make more car ads, the one with the Jag was amazing!
11:37 - 11:50 Your welcome, lol. I love that sound so much that I'm adding it as a ring tone. Great episode!!
Haha all the negative comments by people who drive 20 yr old beater cars.
One or two of the guys on the actual episode drives 20 year old beater cars. There's not necessarily anything wrong with that.
this was the best round table yet...Great stuff!!
Those style lights are now used on most GM products in Australia pretty much all Holden range have that same style.
The new 'vette does look amazing, please bring it and sell it in oz!
This Entire car is sexy as hell, from the the tip of the grill all the way back to the new bad ass looking rear! Great job chevy on this Great American Car!
Or you could buy a used C6 Z06 for half the price of a new ZR1 and spend more time driving than wrenching. I guess my view is based on bitter experience. In 30 years of road testing I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of tuned cars I've driven that didn't break down, overheat, or handle worse than a factory hotrod.
I'm not a Corvette fan, but I have to say the new Corvette is a massive improvement over the old C6 in every way. I personally don't like the new rear tail lights but the rest of it looks okay.
I am a Ford guy, but this car is stunning. I wouldn't care if it had 250 bhp, but its too beautiful not to blow the doors off the car next to you.
I had a Sable wagon when my kids were young in the early 90's and I never cared what anyone may have thought about it. That wagon gave me the most for the money compared to any car I ever had, and I didn't think it was any uglier than most anything else on the road at the time. Most cars were not pretty in those days if you ask me.
Corvette wagon has been done already in the 1954 concept Nomad. And then again Nomad in the tri-5 Chevys is quite a sporty wagon. I love wagons my daily drivers are wagons great for hauling stuff and not bad on fuel. And when I'm not hauling parts for my hot rod projects I'm driving them ;)
David Freiburger just proving his awesomeness.. quodos man
My neighbor has a 335i x-drive, it's a very nice car, it also has exhaust/intake/ecu work so is making a bit under 400hp and a lot of torque, very fun to drive. The only Jeep I like is the SRT8 because it can actually stack up against the overpriced rivals from BMW/Mercedes/Porsche but I just love the new 5.5 TT from MB, with simple upgrades it makes SO much power it's unbelievable! The X5M is pretty good for that too, and while the porsche has the best handling IMO there aren't many power mods.
"The aftermarket has not been stumped yet."
Well said.
I like that idea. The grill would look better solid black, as you said.
Love the Corvette
Keep up the good work Chevy
I like the idea of wagons with performance too. For the same reasons you mentioned. I have kids and dogs and need room, but I am a driver who wants some performance in both speed and handling. The trouble here is many of us grew up riding in the boat wagons of the 60s and 50s and there is an ingrained dislike from that time. I own a CX7 as a compromise as the wife nixed the WRX wagon and the Outback for the simple reason it was a wagon and that was a deal breaker.
i love it, my only problem, believe it or not, its not the tailights, its the silver line on the grill, but idc cause you can get it blacked out so its perfect
I bought an A6 wagon for myself, and I went with the 3.0 instead of the S6 wagon. My wife laughed at it until she drove it. She ended up driving it and cried when I sold it and bought her a Passat TDI SEL.
So happy to have a WRX Wagon with a Full STi swap. I will never understand the mindset behind owning an SUV, when you use the offroad characteristics of it once per year.
Yes indeed, the Passat W8 or MK3 Golf syncro VR6... they were awesome...
On the issue of the taillights of the C7, no complains about the round lights even though the lights of the C1 were not round.
I think ultimately it comes down to how much a person enjoys working on a car.
Ed Lo is always the one who takes that drink and zips it first :) .
I thought we were talking about AWD vs. RWD. What provides the better handling. You said that RWD is strictly for going in a straight line, my primary goal is proving you wrong. RWD can and does produce vehicles that that achieve phenomenal and and rewarding handling. Can AWD produce the same thing? Yes, but RWD is perfectly capable of doing so also. AWD allows you to drive your sports car all year long rain with certain drawbacks. RWD produces more smiles, which is what is most important.
that guy in the end didnt say a word. Volvo made some fast R versions of their wagon back in the day. Those were sweet as.
THE NEW CORVETTE LOOKS GREAT !!!The car is not out yet and there are all ready , kits to make up to 1000hp!
Agree 100% with all of you on the wagon issue. Fast long roofs rock!
Between the vette, the amg, and the truck, the muscle truck by far sounds the best!
When the next gen Corvette comes out you look back at this gen and tell everyone how great you think it is.
The C7 looks amazing with black rims , For the reason it changes the whole look of the car, PS. Inside secret , GM is going to make the new LT1 Modder friendly that's why they kept it a pushrod . the Zr1 c7 will be 700 hp maybe a little more hasn't been decided.
I'm 24 and love German wagons. Theres something about them that seems awesome. I wish there were more over here in the states. Im waiting for BMW to make the new M3/5 wagon.
David Freiburger, is my hero and role model
I would love a stanced wagon with oem roof racks. vw, audi, benz, bmw comes to mind....
Buick Roadmaster wagon with a Z06 engine=great Roadkill episode
That right there is what I have been waiting for you to say, you finally admitted that RWD can produce phenomenal handling.
And yes I'm aware of what happened with the Koenigsegg on it's lap time, rear tires came loose and it went off the track. It needed a wing to create down force on the rear tires. I don't see that as a fault to RWD though. I want to be able to slide the car when I feel like it and that can't happen with AWD. RWD is, generally speaking, more fun.
Two observations - 1) Freiburger needs to be a permanent fixture on the WOT panel. 2) MT should consider reallocating the resources for Head 2 Head to Roadkill, enabling biweekly episodes of a much better show.
Never been a Vette fan but I do like this new one
I think it looks really cool. I like that it doesn't look just like every other freaking corvette out there.
No, every car I cited, and the posts that you responded too, were either about a Super car (more than 300bhp - 500bhp) or Hyper car (550bhp - 1,000bhp) with AWD, or RWD.
And yes a RWD can achieve phenomenal handling.... with a lot of help from either spoilers, fins, multiple computer controlled flaps, or very good aerodynamics though out the body to keep it from spinning out of control.
Just to prove my point watch (Jeremy Clarkson tests Koeingegg CCX) Pay attention @ 7:56 - 8:31, especially.
Good show. I now realize how European my attitudes are after have lived in Germany for a few years. I have always had disdain for SUV's of any kind and love wagons/hatchbacks.
PS My grandfather ran the St Louis GM plant during the 5O's/early 6O's and built Corvettes.
NO, I've sited recorded times on the 'Ring and recorded times on the Top Gear Track. Almost all times on the Top Gear track are FILMED, you can go watch the video of the McClaren MP12-4C, the Paganis, the rear drive BMWs, Mercedes, the rear drive Atom etc etc and see how beautifully they go around the track, not loosing control and setting the fastest times on a very difficult track. I've sited both recorded lap times and video evidence.
Great WoT guys. Seeing the individual personalities of you all really makes me appreciate the information you all give (and how annoyed Ed looks when a few of you comment). There is just something about sitting around talking about cars with some friends (mates; Southern Hemispherean). Needs some Carlos to complete the banter.
Currently rocking my WRX wagon around town right meow.
If you live in a big urban city you want a car with a trunk, people can see everything you have in your wagon/SUV through the back window. Sold my wagon after my car got broken into multiple times.
Very true and I agree with you that American cars have come a long way and are world beaters, but I never buy into the "numbers" game. Its all about how a car feels to drive because two cars that are seconds apart can behave very differently from each other in the real world.
Agree. An improvement on the C6 looks wise I don't understand why people don't like it.
Finally there is a design again! What was horrible was the design-less arrow shape of the 90's! The origins of the corvette was shape, style, beauty!
Again, racing against time is not the same as racing against another car and driver. The fact that you asked me to explain this further means that you have limited sports car driving or racing experience.
And like me the design engineers of the Pagani understood the limitations with the handling for a RWD, especially with over 720 bph. This is why it has four computer controlled hydraulic flaps to make sure that you won't spin out of control!
A corvette is a status symbol for a 50 year old. ;)
