Just shoutout to Call Sheet. I hope this show continues to grow and become big like your other channels. I love these discussions! Great job Lock guiding things!
This is I think the first movie on the channel that I haven’t seen yet. Definitely going to check it out now! I really liked the Magnificent Seven which I believe was heavily inspired by this one.
Wow, really glowing praise so far. Sometimes I don’t watch the movie before watching you guys, but Matty made me really want to and I’m going to after this
When Matt was talking about the intermission it reminded me of 2001 a space odyssey. I wonder if that was common at the time or if Kubrick took inspiration from Kurosawa
When i discovered Kurosawa, after his samurai films i was so very much surprised to see his "Fincher" side with High and Low. It's still, after 20 years - one of my fav's.
Matty and Lock, I see this video has less views than most of your other videos. Please give the classics another shot. I think the foreign nature of this film makes it less accessible to many viewers. Great video!
Awesome pick this week. I don't think this movie is as much a snobby movie anymore. For a decade or so the Criterion crowd really championed this but so much has come out now I think it gets lost in the weeds. Can't wait to hear his thoughts on Kill Bill. I don't even know how you don't do the second one right away. Also Matty you should look into the physical media world for movies. It's honestly better then what they do for games these days. Look into the Umbrella Entertainment release of the old Super Mario Bros movie to get a idea of what these boutique labels do.
I'm surprised you guys didn't mention Mass Effect 2 & 3. The assembling of the crew and then the execution of the mission gave me Seven Samurai vibes. Definitely not beat for beat, but it just gave me the same vibes. Ok, maybe somewhat. Great video as always, gentlemen. You guys are awesome. EDIT: Also, MrMatty, you should try and check out The Magnificent 7 (not the remake/remake). Not as good, but it's great for what it is. I thought it showed Seven Samurai a lot of respect.
Surprised you guys mention Mass Effect 2 but not as a direct inspiration for this. Structurally it's very similar. Preparing for one big mission and rallying a team
A good and very influential movie, but not one of my favorites. I'm hoping you get to the others on the voting list (Wizard of Oz, Kane, 12 Angry Men, Casablanca) soon, I'd take all of them over Seven Samurai
@@ronaldhershner5841Kurosawa gets writing credit on the 1960 The Magnificent Seven because it was essentially a westernized American adaptation of this movie. They often have to credit the original screenwriter of the original source material, which is The Seven Samurai in this case. Edit: Apparently he's also credited for the 2016 Magnificent Seven remake because of this as well, 18 years after his death.
@@Olie986 I was talking the 2016 one… I love that one… Chris Pratt was my favorite character, but I frequently love his delivery. The original I liked, but never really blew my skirt up beyond I like it..
Omg only 600 views? This is like my favorite thing to watch on RUclips
There’s no movie footage. This sucks.

Oh, you mention this, Westerns are actually heavily based on Samurai movies, which is such a cool thing

As they have said in this video, Seven Samurai is a timeless classic. Hope you enjoy the film!

Kill Bill is going to blow Matty away. Can't wait for that
Make a Criterion Corner segment! So many great films on the Criterion Channel!
The run time of this movie felt shockingly quick. Felt timeless
One of my favourite movies, I am nervous watching this episode.
I would never have expected seven samurai from you

PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY SOME OF THE MOVIES ON THE LIST AREN'T ON THE IMBD 250 it hurts my ocd brain lol
Now Matty needs to watch Ikiru which is also another good Kurosawa film.
Ikiru was my first Kurosawa I watched and I think it’s still my favorite. So good!
@@dustinlewis3636 I watched it in film class last year so seeing Matty discussing Kurosawa gave me the idea to recommend it to him.

One of the best movies ever made

Matty with the clean cut
It would be interesting to see what Matty thinks of Metropolis (1927), given its influence on Blade Runner
Should watch Twilight Samurai...
Ooh interesting choice

Watch V for Vendetta after Kill Bill
Quentin treinteno did magnificent 7? I think based on this…
Edit **
Not QT…. I was thinking hateful eight and putting magnificent 7 on it… but IMDb lists Kurosawa as the writer in magnificent 7

I enjoyed it, but felt an hour too long in my opinion. Still good though
