1st off that triton 5.4 V8 was the truth, a couple cons I have to agree with the fuel pump and the O2 sensors went out like every year but other than that mine was a good reliable engine. Built Ford Tuff!!!
Did they learn that? It seems like they lost a bunch of money and got burned. It was years before they were selling premium trucks again (with actual beds this time)

My 06 f250 5.4 has 297 on the clock. This weekend i changed the first part in 8 years of ownership-the alternator took a dump. No leaks and doesnt burn oil.
@@bldontmatter5319 Ya, many people get confused between the older 2v and Lincoln 4v with the 3v newer trucks. It’s likely that some problems of both comes from the spark plugs, but the 2 valve is much more manageable and the only real problem I could see.

Great video but I think that's a bit of wrong information on the 5.4. the 4 and 2 valves were good motors, the 3 valve was the one with a bad reputation. Also I think you're a bit off on the exterior styling, it was a rip off of the navigator but the f-150s didn't look like this 👍 Of course you're spot on about the blackwood being a misfire in a huge way! As far as a collector's truck? Maybe... It's just strange enough to be collectible and had a lot of really interesting features, but overall it's just not that interesting.
You are totally wrong about that generation of Ford not being high quality. I currently drive an 01 F150. It has 240,000 miles and is still in great shape. It has held up extremely well. I have several friends with the same story with tenth gen F150s.

It gets kind of old hearing you tube experts calling the 5.4 unreliable. This 5.4 4 valve engine was first developed in the cobra R mustangs and later found its way into the Ford GT, the 2 valves were used for over 20 years in everything from school buses to RVs, even the blown spark plug issue was resolved pretty early in the production of the 5.4s, as others have commented there are many 5.4s with well over 200k miles. While the 3 valves did have timing issues it's not all of them and if oil is changed regularly it usually isn't a problem. Everybody loves the LS but most 1/2 ton trucks ended up getting that stupid AFM system which is a complete heads off cam out engine repair to correctly delete.
@@ThisThing-so3dq The Ford definitely is as good as a Gmt800’s are famous for weak rear ends the transfer cases leak and have flaw that ruins the case. The 4l60e is weaker then a 4r70w the 5.3 is good but it leaks as well. There a lot of things that are better on a Ford of this generation.
I've never heard of timing chain issues on a 4v or 2v 5.4, only the plastic manifolds leaked on the early 2v and fuel pumps worked fine and only died if people didn't change the fuel filter. Please don't mix up and put the 2v and 4v under the failure umbrella that was the 3v.
Way ahead of its time. And the 2V and 4V 5.4s were solid. Just the 3Vs were bad (04.5-08). My old 03 5.4 f150 ran for 205k problem free miles til I sold her. Still see her round town every now and again
Totally agree. They fixed a lot of the three valve issues with the 09 and 10 but they still weren't perfect. My 2010s motor blew at 106k unfortunately . On the other hand my brother has a 2007 that is not well cared for with 200,000 miles no problems so you never know!
I have a 06 expedition with the 5.4 3v and did not have any issues with 200k plus. Just updated the timing components and oil pump. Guess I'm the exception.
@@mikecarmean1676 yea not all of them messed up. My buddy has a ragged out 06 with 300k. He ran it low on oil. Damn near overheated it, idk how it runs. Had another buddy need cam phasers at 90k. And the 2 piece spark plugs are a mess. I'm never surprised when I see high mileage ones. As well as messy low mileage one.
This guy saying the 5.4L 32 valve is unreliable makes me know for a fact he doesnt know what he is talking about. I worked as a tech at a Ford dealer back in 2002, I know the 32 valve variant is very stout and reliable. Now, the 3 valve is a different story, but those didnt come out until 2004

Friday night in Dallas, I was at a three way stop; the other two vehicles were BOTH Lincoln Blackwoods! That was funny and cool.
That version of the 5.4 is not the unreliable one. It is the next gen. That's the 2 valve and they are pretty darn solid. I'd go for a Ford in that generation over a Chevy all day long for one reason; transmission. Both have good engines. Ford had more robust transmission options.
The shift identifier being misaligned is a typical problem in F150's, Expeditions, Blackwoods, and Navigators. There is a small wire that moves the indicator around and it stretches. I had it on my 98, and the repair was pretty simple with an inexpensive new cable.
This truck is strange but I could see Doug demuro owning one lol I think the 5.4s get a bad rap for human error people always seem to forget these engines were beat on pretty badly and these engines were mainly built for towing and people always over load I see it all the time just recently seen a 2003 Eddie Bauer pulling a 2 axle car trailer with a skid steer loader with 2 ditch witch machines and the inside had a trial machine and a whole lot of various concrete tools she was squatted like a big girl picking up loose change
Dang this is a harsh critique. It’s a 20 year old Ford product. Interior quality was average for the time. Don’t expect Rolls Royce quality. Besides it’s not like GM quality was any better then. Lincoln knew what they were doing in regards to not having 4wd. The people that were going to drive this were never going to need it.
I was working in Dearborn when this truck was being developed and tested. Got a chance to check out one of the early test vehicles from one of the design engineers. It was very cool with a lot of advancements way ahead if its time and competitors.
I would take the Escalade EXT all day, any day over this goofball thing! One could actually tow & haul with the Cadillac. You might be able to haul a suitcase (if you can get the back open) in the Lincoln.
This truck was ahead of its time. Heated and cooled seats first time ever I a truck sun roof also first time in a truck probably. Bed side storage Barn door tailgate GPS in a truck first time Rear radio wasn’t even a thing till like 2005 All things that became standard premium options or adopted by competitors.
I bought mine in 2002 and put over 60k miles on it in 3 years. No issues besides getting new brake pads. I loved the cool air seats on long drives from D.C. to Atlanta. I think it gets a bad rep now but it started the luxury truck craze. People in the early 2000's didn't know how to place it. It drove like a car but it was a truck that didn't haul wood or dirt. I loved the tonneau cover because I could put all of my camera gear in it without anyone knowing the difference. I sold it when the gas crisis went crazy. $25 for a quarter tank of gas was a big deal in 2005. Overall it was a blast to own and I have fond memories, but you can't compare a 2000 truck to a 2020 truck. Night and day. Remember in 2000 we were still fighting front wheel drive.
I truly can’t believe that these 5.4s are as bad as people say they are. I’m no mechanic nor do I have personal experience with these but in Los Angeles I see so many F-150/Expeditions of this body generation that are just chugging along. Yes they’re not taken care of at all but they’re troopers from what I’m seeing.
We had a 2006 expedition, we had ZERO problems with the engine or that vehicle in general. The only issue we ever had was the OEM motorcraft sparkplugs were a three piece design and overtime they’d allow the combustion to blow past inside the plug. We switched to a one piece champion sparkplug and never had an issue again. It was probably one of the most reliable vehicles I’ve ever owned. It had 170k on it when we traded it for a 2016 expedition. As long as the engines are maintained they’re fine, change the oil more than once every 10k and it should last a long time.
@@robertsmith1768 no they aren't actually that bad. These older 5.4s are pretty good when maintained. It's the newer body style 5.4s that had problems. Even then they got it figured out after 2011ish
The 5.4 was a flawless engine, owned 3 that went well over 100k miles with no issues at all. This channel is the only one that talks trash about the 5.4 and y’all have tested maybe one? At least that’s what I’ve seen so far.
Unfortunately with the reputation of the 5.4 3v( which wasn't always a bad motor of course) a lot of folks lump that in with the 5.4 in general even though there were multiple iterations of that engine. They definitely were good motors, remember the million Mile van? 5.4 2v👍
Those Lincoln "pickups" are so rare that the only four I've ever seen were owned and operated as flower trucks by a funeral home in the Baltimore area of Maryland. Oddly enough, the only Caddy "pickups" I have ever seen were also in Maryland. One was utilized by a funeral home as a flower truck while the other four were owned and operated by a high-end lawn service/landscaping business that serviced the Baltimore-D.C. area well to do crowd. There is something about seeing a pickup with either the Caddy, or Lincoln I'm sure, emblem pulling a VERY expensive trailer loaded down with zero turn lawnmowers, weed whackers, and garden tools to make you think, if not say out loud, "What the @#$% !!!!???".
I've seen one once and I freaked out. I think they should be preserved, even if it is kind of a useless truck (no 4WD, no towing, limited bed). Hopefully a few will for posterity's sake!
If I’m not mistaken, this is a 20 year old truck. Yes somethings are going to be broken. I think this vehicle has held up well after all this time. And, the 5.4 in the generation of Lincoln was the reliable one not the 3v which could have been problematic but still a decent engine.
I'd argue that this is more a competitor to the Chevrolet SSR of the period than the Cadillac truck. There are lots of similarities between this and the SSR. Also, those 5.4L motors seem to be bulletproof in my observation. My uncle has a 1998 F-150 with one that's going strong without needing repairs to the motor.
Our 1997 Ford E350 ClubWagon had a 5.4L that ran to 260K miles and to my knowledge is still running. No problems other than the spark plugs. A very great engine
I prefer the formula Ford took over GM's. The Avalance and EXT were **hideous**. The Blackwood's stupid bed was a bad decision, as well as the 2WD-only configuration. The King Ranch F-150 was the luxury Ford that the Blackwood should have been.
There was a 10K to 20K premium on these as soon As I caught wind I went to my local dealer they were only getting 2 54k + plus dealers water sticker I walked 2008 found one 18K out the door 35K miles still have it
The 5.4 2 and 4 valve is a solid motor as is the 3 valve after 2009, plenty of them with over 300k running smooth. Meticulous maintenance and they'll last for a real long time. Use the wrong oil and long drain intervals and you'll pay dearly. I've owned several and all lasted over 200k and was only fed full synthetic 5w20 oil at 5k miles.
Not to be that guy, BUUUUT... Please do not slander the Triton 5.4 2v. It's not perfect, but you're definitely confusing it with the 5.4 3v that came after the 10th gen F-150. It's like the reverse Northstar V8 situation. People run away from and have bad opinions of the good versions of it (2005+) because the others were notoriously bad, and the misinformation just spreads.
The Escalade EXT had 4WD, a useful bed, a (subjectively) better built interior, and a more powerful engine. I'd say reliability of both are about the same, the Blackwood had the 5.4 2V engine which was actually a very reliable engine. Lincoln rectified the problems that made the Blackwood a failure with the Mark LT, but then they added something that arguably made it worse...the 5.4 3V from the 11th generation F-150.
Watch car wizard's video on this Lincoln. Too bad, as it is a beautiful IMO. On the other hand, I put 130,000 miles on my nearly identical F150 Supercrew, with a branded title, never a problem. Consider this Lincoln as a version of an El Camino with four doors. My Supercrew had better payload for sure. I loved how the rear seats folded flat. If it had good payload, it would make a nice tow vehicle for a pull behind trailer. With the pathetic payload, that is basically out.
Even though most trucks now are garage queens, I think truck owners still want that image of ruggedness, which isn't something represented by a Lincoln logo. And the types to want a big luxury truck type vehicle are just gonna get a Navigator or an Escalade.
It’s a freaking 20 year old 140,000 vehicle with unknown maintenance and care history at a used car auction! So you review a 20 year old with 140,000 miles truck that is at an auction that someone is trying to get rid of, like it is a representative of all of them. Act like a couple minor issues are a huge deals, a cup holder and shift indicator, which would take about 15 min tops to fix. Confuse the problematic 3v 5.4 with the 4v 5.4 it actually has. No one bought this truck to take to a jobsite like an XL F150 with rubber floor mats. It was a truck for a guy that was otherwise going to buy a towncar.
I had the temp and fan buttons on the steering wheel on my 03 Crown Vic LX Sport and 06 F-350. They were so convenient especially on the F-350 because it was a reach to the climate controls. It would be great if someone brought those back!
To be fair, electric reclining seats are generally painfully slow and annoying. They're the opposite of luxurious. The manual ones are so much easier and more convenient.
I had that shifter issue with a 98 expedition, i was pulled over by a cop and he looked at my dash and kept telling me to put it in park, it was!!! So he asked me to get off the vehicle and realized i wasnt lying! 😂
Well I knew that it was a rendition called a Lincoln mark Lt made 2006-08 but I just found out that it continued only in Mexico from 2006-2014 and the 2014 had a coyote 5.0 my mind is blown I need to find one asap
Those were definitely rare trucks in the premium pick up truck hasn’t really lasted anywhere. Lincoln also made the MarkLT which my friend Dad used to have, but they first came out. It did not where we work out when Mercedes made a pick up truck for overseas markets either With the X class
In my opinion, the Blackwood suffered quality issues because it was built when Ford was suffering a bit financially from the cost of the Explorer roll over fiasco. GM especially and Ford also-Never buy a car from them when suffering financially because they will take a decent design and cut quality most every time.
I think it’s pretty cool. Quirky for sure! Quirky makes it collectible! I don’t think it will ever be valuable thought. Kind of like a Subaru SVX definitely quirky & collectible but not valuable! Need to do a review of the Lincoln MKT now!
The Subaru Baja might probably be not as collectible either I've seen two Subaru Bajas I live in New Jersey I doubt those are collectible. Lincoln also made the Mark LT also don't forget. I've seen one also.
I had to do a repair on one of these when I worked at a Ford Lincoln Mercury dealership that entailed having to remove the stainless steel panels in the bed. They were easily damaged and a huge pain to get out. Ford had to release a special service video on how to properly remove the panels. They scratched super easy as well. Kind of a neat truck but not practical and they should’ve put the reliable 4.6L V8 under the hood instead.
Speaking of AC controls, it drives me nuts that no one has standard analog fan and mixer controls going forward. Sure, if they want to add digital, have a selectable position all the way to the left for digital control via software on perhaps an android head unit \tablet. I hate all the screens and I love technology. In a car, have a sinhle central head unit, like a 7 to 11 inch tablet controlling stereo, with ODB \ Can interface, but analog controls, or at least lnobs and switches for all drive and climate functions. When you're driving, tactile feedback is everything. It was cool for a second having full digital guages, in a magazine. I want metal (polished brushed anodized or painted, dont care) wood and rubber dashes with panels of knobs switches and guages. A single screen where the stereo goes for entertainment, camera display and all the sensor feedback you could want when parked, but really for maps. I could honestly do without completely but for the maps. I do believe in paper safety maps and compasses but I love me some digital maps and have a workflow that requires android, and I wouldn't mind having it in dash.
It would interesting to see Ram use the back seats from the grand wagoneer in the back of the Ram 2500 mega cab with the 4 zone HVAC it make a really nice luxurious cabin way better then this Lincoln was back in the day
Why the hate? Because the "Blackwood" was an absolutely stupid and useless "truck," with an ebony wood veneered body, and carpeted cargo area. You couldn't use it to haul anything other than people and groceries, since it's bed was lined in automotive carpet. It was nothing more than a pretentios "look at me" truck. By contrast, the Cadillac Escalade EXT was a status symbol, that could also be used to do things and haul stuff for many tasks. It's bed was durable composite, easily washed out if dirtied, and the Escalade EXT didn't have idiotic wood veneer body panels.
Rare, indeed... The question we asked at the time was, "Why?". Absolutely NOBODY had asked for this thing, and that's exactly who bought it. In fact, the Blackwood was a lot like the Chrysler Crossfire, which lasted 5 dreary years and sold just over 76,000. Neither car was well received, never loved and, now, worth very little. The one item you didn't mention is that Ford was really riding high when they both concieved and built the Blackwood. The Explorer and Navigator had Ford management addicted to SUVs and they thought they could do no wrong in that market. Hubris!
I completely understand why this flopped hard. The Escalade EXT was more powerful, had a useable bed (WITH midgate), cheaper, and available with AWD. The Blackwood didn't really offer anything more than what you could get with the contemporary Lincoln Towncar, which probably rode smoother, and had just as much trunk space. That said, I did believe these are worthy of becoming collector owns due to quirkiness and rarity. I also think that Ford could revisit the luxury truck market and do quite well. The market is in a different place now and they have the experience to do it right.
You do realize there's more to Lincoln than this heap yeah? It's a 100+ year old company. In the 50s a Lincoln continental was faster, more technologically advanced, and more luxurious than a Rolls-Royce. And to say the US doesn't have ANY luxury brands is certainly an opinion, albeit an objectively false opinion.
It was insanely overpriced and was basically useless as a pickup truck. I kinda dig the thing, but I'm weird like that. It's not a big mystery why they failed to sell.
In the 20 years since these released I have only ever seen 2 on the road one like this an one with the topper removed to make it into a flower car for a funeral parlor.
The 5.4 DOHC has an all aluminum block made in Italy. It's not exactly your normal 5.4.... this was a tricked out cool car never meant to be used as a truck
Is it F150 enough that you could pull off that ridiculous bed and stick an F150 bed on it, or is it typical ford, where they move all the bolts an inch in random directions so that nothing can interchange?
But it is a classic . . . a classic example of how manufacturers screw up. And, truly, with only 3000 total made, IF you can find a clean one, maybe . . . maybe . . . okay, No. It kinda sucks.
And yet Dodge Ram went to the same design for the tailgate, to compensate for the GM multi tailgate.. Great idea, it failed for Ford, but let's copy it. Ford however copied GM with the side bed step in the 3/4 ton bed and the step bumper.!

The problem 5.4L engine was the 3 valve version. The 32 valve (4 valve per cylinder) was OK.

The cup holder is a common issue. It's not jammed, the spring is either broke or missing. It's about a 3 minute repair.

Fords axles are better and the transfer cases don’t leak like a Chevy too . They definitely haven’t done their homework properly on this one

Lincoln knew what they were doing in regards to not having 4wd. The people that were going to drive this were never going to need it.
I was working in Dearborn when this truck was being developed and tested. Got a chance to check out one of the early test vehicles from one of the design engineers. It was very cool with a lot of advancements way ahead if its time and competitors.
I would take the Escalade EXT all day, any day over this goofball thing! One could actually tow & haul with the Cadillac. You might be able to haul a suitcase (if you can get the back open) in the Lincoln.

I bought mine in 2002 and put over 60k miles on it in 3 years. No issues besides getting new brake pads. I loved the cool air seats on long drives from D.C. to Atlanta. I think it gets a bad rep now but it started the luxury truck craze. People in the early 2000's didn't know how to place it. It drove like a car but it was a truck that didn't haul wood or dirt. I loved the tonneau cover because I could put all of my camera gear in it without anyone knowing the difference. I sold it when the gas crisis went crazy. $25 for a quarter tank of gas was a big deal in 2005. Overall it was a blast to own and I have fond memories, but you can't compare a 2000 truck to a 2020 truck. Night and day. Remember in 2000 we were still fighting front wheel drive.
I truly can’t believe that these 5.4s are as bad as people say they are. I’m no mechanic nor do I have personal experience with these but in Los Angeles I see so many F-150/Expeditions of this body generation that are just chugging along. Yes they’re not taken care of at all but they’re troopers from what I’m seeing.
Those engines really are that bad. It’s likely that the ones you see running around have the 4.6 which is bulletproof.
We had a 2006 expedition, we had ZERO problems with the engine or that vehicle in general. The only issue we ever had was the OEM motorcraft sparkplugs were a three piece design and overtime they’d allow the combustion to blow past inside the plug. We switched to a one piece champion sparkplug and never had an issue again. It was probably one of the most reliable vehicles I’ve ever owned. It had 170k on it when we traded it for a 2016 expedition. As long as the engines are maintained they’re fine, change the oil more than once every 10k and it should last a long time.
It's the three valves that were potentially problematic, two and four valves got around well and some have a crazy amount of miles on them!
@@robertsmith1768 no they aren't actually that bad. These older 5.4s are pretty good when maintained. It's the newer body style 5.4s that had problems. Even then they got it figured out after 2011ish
they are. 4.6 or 5.0 are dependable

I bought mine in '06 and had it for 9 years. Had zero problems. This presentation misrepresents the vehicle as problematic; it wasnt.

The 5.4 was a flawless engine, owned 3 that went well over 100k miles with no issues at all. This channel is the only one that talks trash about the 5.4 and y’all have tested maybe one? At least that’s what I’ve seen so far.
Unfortunately with the reputation of the 5.4 3v( which wasn't always a bad motor of course) a lot of folks lump that in with the 5.4 in general even though there were multiple iterations of that engine. They definitely were good motors, remember the million Mile van? 5.4 2v👍
It's because the timing chains and people need to replace them. 4.6 and 5.4 3v was very good engines

Those Lincoln "pickups" are so rare that the only four I've ever seen were owned and operated as flower trucks by a funeral home in the Baltimore area of Maryland. Oddly enough, the only Caddy "pickups" I have ever seen were also in Maryland. One was utilized by a funeral home as a flower truck while the other four were owned and operated by a high-end lawn service/landscaping business that serviced the Baltimore-D.C. area well to do crowd. There is something about seeing a pickup with either the Caddy, or Lincoln I'm sure, emblem pulling a VERY expensive trailer loaded down with zero turn lawnmowers, weed whackers, and garden tools to make you think, if not say out loud, "What the @#$% !!!!???".
Be hard to convince me 5.4s are good. I manage a fleet and the 5.4s were so bad, we started replacing them with 4.6 trucks and never looked back
I've seen one once and I freaked out. I think they should be preserved, even if it is kind of a useless truck (no 4WD, no towing, limited bed). Hopefully a few will for posterity's sake!
I grabbed one for collecting. Not many up here in Canada. I call it my glorified golf cart. Fits perfectly 4 dudes and 4 golf bags.
If I’m not mistaken, this is a 20 year old truck. Yes somethings are going to be broken. I think this vehicle has held up well after all this time. And, the 5.4 in the generation of Lincoln was the reliable one not the 3v which could have been problematic but still a decent engine.

I'd argue that this is more a competitor to the Chevrolet SSR of the period than the Cadillac truck. There are lots of similarities between this and the SSR.
Also, those 5.4L motors seem to be bulletproof in my observation. My uncle has a 1998 F-150 with one that's going strong without needing repairs to the motor.
I feel like “luxury” trucks where not exactly as big of a market as it is today, which is why it flopped as well I think
Our 1997 Ford E350 ClubWagon had a 5.4L that ran to 260K miles and to my knowledge is still running. No problems other than the spark plugs. A very great engine
I prefer the formula Ford took over GM's. The Avalance and EXT were **hideous**. The Blackwood's stupid bed was a bad decision, as well as the 2WD-only configuration. The King Ranch F-150 was the luxury Ford that the Blackwood should have been.

Wrong on the engine, it was only the 3V that had major issues. The Intech 5.4, and Trititon 5.2 2v and 4v. Were good engines.
I remember these, that engine was special in the day. A 4 cam 32 valve V8. It had I believe 60hp more than the F150's 5.4 SOHC engine.
There was a 10K to 20K premium on these as soon
As I caught wind I went to my local dealer they were only getting 2 54k + plus dealers water sticker I walked 2008 found one 18K out the door 35K miles still have it
The 5.4 2 and 4 valve is a solid motor as is the 3 valve after 2009, plenty of them with over 300k running smooth. Meticulous maintenance and they'll last for a real long time. Use the wrong oil and long drain intervals and you'll pay dearly. I've owned several and all lasted over 200k and was only fed full synthetic 5w20 oil at 5k miles.
A Lincoln TownCar Long wheelbase might've been a better deal (if you can find one)
The 5.4 4V is a great engine, the 5.4 3V has cam phaser issues.

Please do not slander the Triton 5.4 2v. It's not perfect, but you're definitely confusing it with the 5.4 3v that came after the 10th gen F-150.
It's like the reverse Northstar V8 situation. People run away from and have bad opinions of the good versions of it (2005+) because the others were notoriously bad, and the misinformation just spreads.
These have the 4v InTech engine (like the Lincoln Mark VIII and the higher end first-gen Navigators)

The Escalade EXT had 4WD, a useful bed, a (subjectively) better built interior, and a more powerful engine. I'd say reliability of both are about the same, the Blackwood had the 5.4 2V engine which was actually a very reliable engine. Lincoln rectified the problems that made the Blackwood a failure with the Mark LT, but then they added something that arguably made it worse...the 5.4 3V from the 11th generation F-150.
The Blackwood had the 4v engine, not 2v. Same generation though.
3v engines are reliable. Seen many with hundreds of thousands of miles

Watch car wizard's video on this Lincoln. Too bad, as it is a beautiful IMO. On the other hand, I put 130,000 miles on my nearly identical F150 Supercrew, with a branded title, never a problem. Consider this Lincoln as a version of an El Camino with four doors. My Supercrew had better payload for sure. I loved how the rear seats folded flat. If it had good payload, it would make a nice tow vehicle for a pull behind trailer. With the pathetic payload, that is basically out.
Even though most trucks now are garage queens, I think truck owners still want that image of ruggedness, which isn't something represented by a Lincoln logo. And the types to want a big luxury truck type vehicle are just gonna get a Navigator or an Escalade.

It only had 2 rear seats in most versions and then the permanent bedcover made it a large trunk instead of the utility of a pickup bed.
It’s a freaking 20 year old 140,000 vehicle with unknown maintenance and care history at a used car auction!
So you review a 20 year old with 140,000 miles truck that is at an auction that someone is trying to get rid of, like it is a representative of all of them. Act like a couple minor issues are a huge deals, a cup holder and shift indicator, which would take about 15 min tops to fix. Confuse the problematic 3v 5.4 with the 4v 5.4 it actually has. No one bought this truck to take to a jobsite like an XL F150 with rubber floor mats. It was a truck for a guy that was otherwise going to buy a towncar.
I had the temp and fan buttons on the steering wheel on my 03 Crown Vic LX Sport and 06 F-350. They were so convenient especially on the F-350 because it was a reach to the climate controls. It would be great if someone brought those back!

To be fair, electric reclining seats are generally painfully slow and annoying. They're the opposite of luxurious. The manual ones are so much easier and more convenient.
I had that shifter issue with a 98 expedition, i was pulled over by a cop and he looked at my dash and kept telling me to put it in park, it was!!! So he asked me to get off the vehicle and realized i wasnt lying! 😂
Forgot to mention mine was just stuck in neutral, regardless of what gear i put it in, it would only show neutral 🤦♂️

Those were definitely rare trucks in the premium pick up truck hasn’t really lasted anywhere. Lincoln also made the MarkLT which my friend Dad used to have, but they first came out.
It did not where we work out when Mercedes made a pick up truck for overseas markets either With the X class
In my opinion, the Blackwood suffered quality issues because it was built when Ford was suffering a bit financially from the cost of the Explorer roll over fiasco. GM especially and Ford also-Never buy a car from them when suffering financially because they will take a decent design and cut quality most every time.
I think it’s pretty cool. Quirky for sure! Quirky makes it collectible! I don’t think it will ever be valuable thought. Kind of like a Subaru SVX definitely quirky & collectible but not valuable! Need to do a review of the Lincoln MKT now!
The Subaru Baja might probably be not as collectible either I've seen two Subaru Bajas I live in New Jersey I doubt those are collectible. Lincoln also made the Mark LT also don't forget. I've seen one also.
I had to do a repair on one of these when I worked at a Ford Lincoln Mercury dealership that entailed having to remove the stainless steel panels in the bed. They were easily damaged and a huge pain to get out. Ford had to release a special service video on how to properly remove the panels. They scratched super easy as well. Kind of a neat truck but not practical and they should’ve put the reliable 4.6L V8 under the hood instead.

Speaking of AC controls, it drives me nuts that no one has standard analog fan and mixer controls going forward. Sure, if they want to add digital, have a selectable position all the way to the left for digital control via software on perhaps an android head unit \tablet. I hate all the screens and I love technology. In a car, have a sinhle central head unit, like a 7 to 11 inch tablet controlling stereo, with ODB \ Can interface, but analog controls, or at least lnobs and switches for all drive and climate functions. When you're driving, tactile feedback is everything. It was cool for a second having full digital guages, in a magazine. I want metal (polished brushed anodized or painted, dont care) wood and rubber dashes with panels of knobs switches and guages. A single screen where the stereo goes for entertainment, camera display and all the sensor feedback you could want when parked, but really for maps. I could honestly do without completely but for the maps. I do believe in paper safety maps and compasses but I love me some digital maps and have a workflow that requires android, and I wouldn't mind having it in dash.
It would interesting to see Ram use the back seats from the grand wagoneer in the back of the Ram 2500 mega cab with the 4 zone HVAC it make a really nice luxurious cabin way better then this Lincoln was back in the day

Why the hate? Because the "Blackwood" was an absolutely stupid and useless "truck," with an ebony wood veneered body, and carpeted cargo area. You couldn't use it to haul anything other than people and groceries, since it's bed was lined in automotive carpet. It was nothing more than a pretentios "look at me" truck. By contrast, the Cadillac Escalade EXT was a status symbol, that could also be used to do things and haul stuff for many tasks. It's bed was durable composite, easily washed out if dirtied, and the Escalade EXT didn't have idiotic wood veneer body panels.

Rare, indeed... The question we asked at the time was, "Why?". Absolutely NOBODY had asked for this thing, and that's exactly who bought it. In fact, the Blackwood was a lot like the Chrysler Crossfire, which lasted 5 dreary years and sold just over 76,000. Neither car was well received, never loved and, now, worth very little. The one item you didn't mention is that Ford was really riding high when they both concieved and built the Blackwood. The Explorer and Navigator had Ford management addicted to SUVs and they thought they could do no wrong in that market. Hubris!
It was not meant to be used as a regular utilitarian truck, and extremely expensive when new.

I completely understand why this flopped hard. The Escalade EXT was more powerful, had a useable bed (WITH midgate), cheaper, and available with AWD.
The Blackwood didn't really offer anything more than what you could get with the contemporary Lincoln Towncar, which probably rode smoother, and had just as much trunk space.
That said, I did believe these are worthy of becoming collector owns due to quirkiness and rarity.
I also think that Ford could revisit the luxury truck market and do quite well. The market is in a different place now and they have the experience to do it right.

In the 50s a Lincoln continental was faster, more technologically advanced, and more luxurious than a Rolls-Royce. It was insanely overpriced and was basically useless as a pickup truck. I kinda dig the thing, but I'm weird like that. It's not a big mystery why they failed to sell.
In the 20 years since these released I have only ever seen 2 on the road one like this an one with the topper removed to make it into a flower car for a funeral parlor.
This was not ment to be a work truck to compare this to a F150 is apples to oranges i absolutely love mine it rode drove so nice
The 2nd Generation was much better. Blackwood was a niche truck. Nothing else looked like it and people that owned them loved them.
The 5.4 DOHC has an all aluminum block made in Italy. It's not exactly your normal 5.4.... this was a tricked out cool car never meant to be used as a truck

I think the Lincoln Mark LT did better, but trucks have become so luxurious that you don't even need to get a premium brand any more.
