I will never understand why “car like” continues to be a staple of auto journalist lingo when talking about trucks and SUVs. Car like is the last thing I want out of a truck or truck-based SUV, especially in terms of comfort. A “car like” ride is stiff, rebound is fast and not compliant. I love the way the 4Runner and 200 series Land Cruiser ride with their soft, body rolling, incredibly capable suspension. When you go over bumps and harsh road joints there’s a moment of “float” instead of instant suspension reaction and recovery. NVH is better, lateral G’s are felt less as body roll redirects that energy. Please stop comparing large SUV’s and modern pickup trucks to cars lol, its just silly. Anyway, I had to point that out. Great review of a fantastic TRUCK from Toyota. They absolutely nailed this.
"A “car like” ride is stiff, rebound is fast and not compliant." What cars are you driving? Might be true in cheaper small cars. Definitely not in more expensive models.
@@garytryan S-class Mercedes and 7 Series BMW’s aren’t representative of the majority of cars, and certainly don’t represent what people generally mean when they say “car-like.” Those magnificent vehicles have some body roll and float, as intended. The trouble is somewhat nebulous language and blanket statements used to describe somewhat nuanced things, like how a vehicle rides and handles. Two people might experience the exact same thing and describe it completely differently. No worries in that. Cheers!
This will be what replaces my wife's 17 Sienna. Nearly twice the power with almost the same mileage. My wife likes to run into stuff. It starts to get expensive in a minivan but I can put a brush guard on this.
Honestly, I don't get it. You pay 1/3 more for this than the new Sienna and pay 50% more in fuel, in order to get less functionality (Sienna is roomier with more cargo space). Unless you need the towing capacity and just like to burn out, why in the world would you buy this over the new bad-ass Sienna (which even looks better, in my opinion).
That gauge cluster is going to be a showstopper for a lot of people Doug probably sold a boatload of Sequoias for Toyota with his Morse Code explanation! And his great review!

@@TheCostantinus there are different stages of pre production. Yes some of the early stage ones he reviews are not able to be driven but when toyota puts on an event like the one he's at now they have numerous pre production models in various trims that they are allowing people to drive.

We Finally got one. Super lucky I called the dealer that day to see if they had any and someone backed out of their custom order which had everything we actually wanted. Never done a car deal so fast.
It's funny how no one talks about the fact that a twin-turbocharged V6 is a super high-compression motor that's working a lot harder than a V8 that's just loping along. No one thinks about the fact that that V6 is under an incredible amount of stress and it will definitely affect its lifespan. There's nothing that beats the longevity of a well-built V8.
Twin turbo on a gas engine is just twice the trouble. Toyota should’ve stuck with Naturally aspirated power. What ever money you save on gas will be dumped into repairs soon enough.
Unfortunately all vehicle manufacturers are pressured/forced by government agencies to build smaller engines to increase mpgs and decrease emissions. The government is the reason we can't have nice things.
This is going to be a great 8 seater and people mover. The Land Cruiser had an awkward 3rd row setup while the Lexus LX ditches the 3rd row altogether in it's top trim. It's refreshing that you don't have to spend $100K+ for a SUV that's capable AND nice. A sliding/reclining 3rd row that's not cramped is a big deal and this one is easy to get to unlike some where it takes a while for that 2nd row to get out of the way. As for the engine, a hybrid V6 gives you some major fuel efficiency numbers, yet you also have those twin turbos for the big power applications. That leaves the V8 for folks who want to supercharge them and get maximum horsepower - Cadillac already does it and I'm guessing the Grand Wagoneer will get the same treatment. My only complaint are those 2nd row captains chairs, and it's the same complaint with the X7 - useless small armrests. No support for your arms and good luck getting them fixed if they break. Captains chairs should be about well made arm rests and I see very few out there done right.
I like a lot of the things I've seen in this vehicle. One nitpick for me, however, is that the third row doesn't fold flat. I think details like that might hurt it compared to the Expedition and Tahoe.
@@the_random9718 considering the prius is a hybrid and those are decently reliable i think this thing will be just fine. i don’t think it’ll be as reliable as the old V8 but hopefully it’ll still be solid
Best clever design I ever seen in Toyotas vehicle , I bought Lexus LX last month , I am happy with most of things despite , after all 3 rows up , hardly fit 3 bags , everything is nearly perfect , I enjoy every moment driving the vehicle but raising the 3 row little amount of space , we don’t get sequoia in Australia , I don’t know why
I think people underestimate how great having a hybrid camping/offroad vehicle is. That battery can power everything you need for a few days and maybe never even have to run. You can sleep inside with the vehicle on all night with heat and the engine will only kick on every once in a while to recharge. It's kind of a game changer.
Toyota missed it with the cargo - being able to slide the seats is good, but those third row seats really need to go completely flat for a flat floor. The Explorer has had that for a long time and I use it a lot.
Now that you've outed the Badass easter egg, Toyota will get rid of it :-) Zonk Toyota for putting red turn signals in back (should be amber). Great video as always Doug
A gorgeous redesign! But That cargo area definetly is small for its class. But the tailgate glass opening is still a big perk. The MPG is attractive in its class. Save gas in the city commute, and have more hybrid torque during adverse weather or mild off roading. On pricing: the 2001 first generation SR5 started at around 35k MSRP, which, in 2022 dollars now is about 57k. Though the top trims of the 2022 far exceed the 2001 limited by a few thousand dollars. Of course, I say this as if I could ever anything above 50k HAHAHA...
Nice but I'm sticking with my 2nd generation Sequoia. Two things that jumped out at me were that the rear window no longer rolls down 😕 and when the 3rd row folds down it no longer creates a flush surface which really cuts down on the cargo functionality. Plus I'm keeping my tried-and-true 5.7 L V-8 which I know will give me hundreds of thousands of miles of use. I'll wait and see how long a turbo V-6 holds up. Great review as always.
The Sequoia has always been the other other large SUV from Toyota/Lexus. I always looked at these since Land cruiser/GX prices went up. These are wonderful SUVs.
Thank you Doug!! I saw one of these on the road yesterday and didn’t know what it was besides a Toyota 🤣 also my instructor in auto tech school loves you and showed us your Nissan Z video during lunch
Only thing holding me back from the Sequoia is the lack of an extended length version! We use all three rows of seats in our Expedition EL and the space behind the 3rd row is irreplaceable! Suburbans have had that extra space forever and the Jeep Wagoneer just got an L version!
Taking a note from Jeep with adding the decals on the windshield. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think they do that so if the glass breaks, you’re more likely to take it to a Toyota dealer than a third party glass replacement company.
Love everything about the new Sequoia except the storage space and lack of fold flat 3rd row. With 3 kids and 2 large dogs I need every square inch I can find.
I’m more like a minivan person for practicality reasons but really love the new Sequoia. It feels like the right truck to run over some zombies or carjackers…while having the whole family on board.
Love the real shifter! Doug use your influence to convince pickup truck makers (Cough RAM cough) to get rid of the gimmicky dials and put a real shifter back in the trucks. Ever plow or backup a trailer with a rotary shifter? What are they thinking?!?!
Great review, im so glad they retained the rear glass that opens! The fact that you can slide the 3rd row to increase cargo is brilliant. I just hope they dont price gouge these like everything else. I think I finally found a replacement for me 2012 pathfinder!
I plan to buy 2nd year model so major bugs are worked out by then. Hopefully they’ll made updates to the screens to allow better configurations. Can the 3rd row be removed for flat storage?
16:14 "You don't often see cooled rear seats in just about anything short of a Rolls Royce" Lincoln has offered that for at least 10 years now. And they don't cost nearly as much as a Rolls.
Only downside is the rear cargo and third row leg room space vs the 2008-2022,the plus is the new interior look and mpg 20-22mpg is great for its weight and size.

It might fit a few stacks of the plywood, but only if you sing chocolate rain while you try to load it in.
I have been watching this channel for years, but this one review really affirms why I really like Doug DeMuro. Excellent!
Cheers!
@@maxon1672 Makes sense. Thanks.

Good job Toyota. I'm not at all a customer in this category, but this seems great.

That's why you see a bunch of the auto reviews being posted on the same vehicles at the same time.
I really hope they offer these with an option of no 3rd row seating. The fold down seats don't allow you to put big bulky items in there because the floor is not level. Having a flat, uniform cargo area as an option would be great.

People forget Toyota built the longest lasting 4 cylinder trucks and inline 6 engines. If anyone can do forced induction reliably it’s Toyota
Unfortunately all vehicle manufacturers are pressured/forced by government agencies to build smaller engines to increase mpgs and decrease emissions. The government is the reason we can't have nice things.
Probably because Toyota only has a 3.5 block to go off of cuz they're f****** cheap ass jabronies.
@BronzeXV70 My 2000 Chevy Suburban has a 38 gal. tank (OEM) cost to fill it? $190, ugh!
Awesome review as always. Love the honesty, enthusiasm, and genuine joy of these videos.

I think people underestimate how great having a hybrid camping/offroad vehicle is. That battery can power everything you need for a few days and maybe never even have to run. You can sleep inside with the vehicle on all night with heat and the engine will only kick on every once in a while to recharge. It's kind of a game changer.

It’s ridiculous
Nice but I'm sticking with my 2nd generation Sequoia. Two things that jumped out at me were that the rear window no longer rolls down 😕 and when the 3rd row folds down it no longer creates a flush surface which really cuts down on the cargo functionality. Plus I'm keeping my tried-and-true 5.7 L V-8 which I know will give me hundreds of thousands of miles of use. I'll wait and see how long a turbo V-6 holds up. Great review as always.
