Can't believe he's only 29 in this clip, he already had a play on broadway, was an established actor, and was openly gay in the early 70's. That's amazing, my 30 year old gay ass has a hard time being out in 2022, what an incredible person.
Harvey has this je ne sais quoi that puts even the most ignorant people at ease. He stood in the giant spotlight in a time when the AIDS epidemic was not only wiping out the gay community, but it also gave a lot of people a reason to fear and blame anything gay as well. He brandished wit and humor like a magic wand and it helped bridge the gap like never before. I can only hope that his name continues to resonate for years to come as the historic figure he was and is.
Doesn’t everyone love Mr Fierstein? He’s brilliant and beautiful. What an illuminating icon. His autobiography is equally as refreshing. He has gotten even better with age.
Aside from the timbre of the voices (night and day), everything about the way they speak is so similar. They're both from Brooklyn, but it's not just that. A straight man from Brooklyn with no connections to the entertainment industry would not sound like either of them. The accent, maybe. But not the tonality and word choice. They really sound like cousins who grew up next door to each other. It melts my California heart.
I saw this amazing play in London, but with Anthony Sher in the lead and was so blown away by it that I went back three times in one week to see it again and again - and I didn't live in London at the time. On meeting Sher at the stage door, he told me the film was coming out and he would not be playing the lead. I was disappointed but he said to me: "GO TO SEE IT. You will love Harvey Fierstein" and I did and boy was he right! WHAT a talent.
I saw it in NY and was blown away...there was a hetero couple in front of me and after the 1st act they left and never came back...the husband kept mumbling under his breath he couldn't wait to get the hell outta here...I was happy because I had an unobstructed view...that play was LONG...but flew by like it was 5 minutes...
@@mstraction Well I'm not gay and I loved it. You don't have to be gay to appreciate this fabulous play. The hetero couple who walked out did not know what they were missing.
My sincere empathy for your negative experiences... I hope you're overexaggerating about the truth of this clip... because I'm not seeing that.... everyone seems to be well-meaning. But you may be right.
"... You're so relaxed about being gay" - what a time... I've been there, bi myself, but I never noticed how much it was a no go at that time in Germany
It would have been nice for him to make a sequel to that movie I would love to watch it sometimes I put that movie in I was lucky enough to find it on CD or dvd it was really nice bring back memories at that time
I am gonna use this place to go off on something I saw on RUclips tonight that I can't comment on because they turned off the comments. Arsenio Hall was asked back in the 80s why he didn't have Harvey on his show. He said "When he does something I'm interested in I will have him on my show. This is MY SHOW" Really???? I have always liked Arsenio. Arsenio, Harvey is amazing. Guess you needed more culture in your life. And you should be interested if your audience is. They made you who you are.
I actually remember this sin of you when it was aired the 1st time... Harvey was way before his time.... It's a shame how the gay community has forgotten all about the trail blazers....

Those are Easter eggs and I’m the Easter Bunny. But it’s usually my season and it’s still Christmas! I gotta move these here eggs! Whaddya say, little fella? How ‘bout a lovely Easter egg for a Christmas present? Oh, it makes a very unique gift!” Elmo: “Really?” 🎶Buy your friends an Easter egg for Christmas! Easter eggs are useful as can be! He was so ahead of his time for the 80's! What an iconic trailblazer!
An iconic cumblaizer..
Totally agree. Today he would be with his own interview show

Harvey is amazing.
And an incredibly nice, warm person too.
God I miss Joan Rivers, and I'm here just cuz I love Harvy Fierstein's voice 💕
I was young when I first saw this movie - so moving. He was amazing in the movie.

harvey needs much more recognition!!! what ease he has in these interviews

I'm so envious of anyone who saw the play. I've seen the movie many times over, but it's not the same!
What a character and what a clever man. Listen to him read his autobiography; it's a blast.
What a beautiful man. Has lots of charisma and think this is already 35 hrs ago. LovedbTor he sing trilogy
My best friend introduced me to 'Torch Song Trilogy', the film, thirty years ago, and I thought Fierstein was a riot! 😄
"would leather gangs come up and annoy you kids, or?"
"leather gangs would come up and cruise, what are you talking about?"
Notice maybe 3-4 people laughed. The jokes went right over the audience's head. Times have sure changed!
@@roccoz2231I hear more than a few people laughing!! The audience went hysterical and they should because he and Joan worked well together
He is so witty and charming!!
What a gem of a clip. Harvey is so funny. Thank you for sharing.
That was incredible. Iconic.
bravo for him. he is a trailblazer. good for him to be so brave and let people know i am who i am. good interview
Harvey is the best! going to watch torch song trilogy now ;)
i love and admire him so much!
Makes me sad they were laughing at him not with him. I’ve felt that way before...

Yassss ugh oh my god I love this man I wish I could some day meet him

Wow, he really killed it. David Brenner must've been thinking, "He stealing my act!"
Harvey was so far ahead of his times.
I met him, he's a cut-up and a seriously funny guy.
Love Harvey
Oh to go back to such a time…
It would have been nice for him to make a sequel to that movie I would love to watch it sometimes I put that movie in I was lucky enough to find it on CD or dvd it was really nice bring back memories at that time
So much fun! Two Jewish New Yawkers! I think Harvey even had Joan speechless a couple of times.
OMG - he’s SO funny - love him💛💛💛
I knew Harvey was talented, but I never realized how funny he is!!
Thank you for posting this!!!
Brilliant

Arsenio who?? Never heard of her🤗🤗🤗🤗💋
What an icon. I still prefer the drag name 'Bang Bang-ladesh!'
Lol me too! Though I prefer "Fonda Boyz" meself :-)
Grant Shaud was in Torch Song Trilogy

Harvey Talk Clearly
Did Joan even read that intro before hand?
Compare this interview with Barbara Walter’s, it’s clear who the ally was and wasn’t
Barbara WaWa was an idiot and asked him so many insipid questions with her idiotic lisp!😂
G-Q outfit? what does that mean?
Hell, he’s smart!
His voice is normal here
This was hilarious.
I love this man. But just remember: I’m the pretty one!
