- Here's another clip from Stephen Sondheim's 75th Birthday concert, "Children and Art" featuring Harvey Fierstein. Singing Mama Rose. As Tevya (he was doing Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway at the time).
I just read Harvey's memoirs- 'I Was Better Last Night'- he talks about doing this... before they decided who did what at the show and how there would be a fight between all the divas wanting to do 'Rose's Turn' Harvey suggested he do it and cut them all off beforehand. The director loved the idea and here we are... he was perfoming in Fiddler at the time, so no one was the wiser when he started out with that.
That story in his memoirs is what brought me here. I was hoping there'd be a clip of it. lol
It’s every gay man’s dream to do this number.
Soooo...who came here after reading about this in Harvey's book? (Or listened in my case since I did the audiobook)
Same! The Audiobook was the best way to read it honestly, felt like listening to a friend
Me
Me! I never knew he’d done “Fiddler” and wish they’d taped an entire performance with him as Tevye. I love his book! I am reading it now.
Literally this very moment. Hahah
I Love Harvey Fierstein With All My Heart And Always Will

Omg AMAZING
Y'know, some of the lines in "Rose's Turn" could apply to Tevye and his daughters.
Genius!
Brilliant😊
Normally I would be against a man taking one of the perenial leading lady roles, but I would totally pay to see Gypsy staring Harvey Fierstein.
