Harvey is so intelligent and witty. He is who he was in Torch Song.Such soft spoken .He makes his points without raising his voice .it came out in a tiny theatre in Paris 6 months after US release.there were 10 movies a day in the same " room ?".the Rocky Horror was at midnight .after 2 weeks ,the Torch played from 10 am to midnight .they still kept the Rocky at midnight. There was no internet, but it took only 2 weeks to get huge line out of the tiny theatre all day long .

Beautiful! My favorite all time movie- Torch Song Trilogy. I have lost track of how many times I have watched it over the years. As a writer, it has inspired me more than I can say. Bravo Harvey! You are a great artist, writer, and leader. Thank you!

I absolutely love Harvey Fierstein and Torch Song Trilogy. I first saw him in Mrs. Doubtfire with Robin Williams when I was 12. Then in college, I found the Torch Song trilogy movie, saw it and loved it. It is interesting how whenever I first find these movies, it mirrors my life in certain ways.

I haven’t had the privilege of seeing the play, but I saw the film version.
I know this may sound odd, but it changed my life, and continues to have a profound effect on my life.
I first saw it in my late teens/early 20’s, and at the time, I didn’t know I was a lesbian. Seeing this film allowed me to begin my journey out of the closet. I identified with the adversity the characters go through, the questions that straight ppl just don’t go through. Society still tells ppl that being straight is “normal” and “acceptable”, which sends the message that being LGBT is not. The world is changing, and for that I’m thankful, but I can’t wait to see a world that is truly equal, where we can disagree without physical and/or mental violence...

My best friend in high school was gay and made me watch the movie and it's still in my top 10 films. It helped me understand what he was going through and it made me a better, more open minded person.

A tiny 100 seats theatre played it once a day in Paris. 6 months after the Us release. Without internet, it became a tidal wave in only 2 weeks. To the point it was played from 10 am to 2am. Huge line outside. People coming from all over France. I saw it 6 times then.

Thanks Harvey. The scene where you declare your independence to your mother was pivotal in my life. I knew then I could do everything for myself if need be and would never apologize for who I was from then on. I was 21 in 1988 and already out for 3 years. I was inspired by the film to live my life as it was meant to be

In the early 80's Harvey did an interview with Barbara Walters in which he talked about how people don't view gay people the same way as heterosexuals because the media doesn't present the full picture (such as showing gay couples who have been in 20+ year relationships, etc). I'd say that was very true, because even as a high school student in the late 80's / early 90's, I had no personal exposure to gay men or women... it was Harvey's film Torch Song Trilogy that first showed me this whole other world I didn't know or conceive of. When I first rented that film and saw Harvey and Matthew Broderick's characters kiss, I remember pausing the video for a minute, because - just like Harvey pointed out in that Barbara interview - it wasn't something the media ever showed so I'd never seen that before. I said "Wow" and paused the film, and thought about it for maybe 2 minutes, and then rewound the scene, watched it again and just found it really beautiful. (And heartbreaking, as those of you who have seen the film know what eventually happens... boy, did I sob at that!) And from that moment, because of Harvey's film, I just knew where I stood on the subject, that it's all the same, it's love, and gay people shouldn't have to explain themselves or be anything other than who they are. Period. Harvey put himself out there and spoke eloquently about being gay at a time when most were afraid to even touch the subject, and I'll always admire him for it. He's a talented and brilliant man.

I've never been to a live play. But when it comes to movies & TV, Harvey & Mercedes are both forces of nature. I love Torch Song Trilogy. And, in the movie, when Arnold looked out the apartment widow & spoke to Alan, the atmosphere between inside & outside was so jarring that I knew it was an ending. I thought about that moment a lot later, because, I'd never cried over a gay man being beaten & murdered in reality before. As a closeted but very promiscuous gay young man, I knew every moment might have been my last. But, when Arnold lost Alan, I saw a value in a gay man's life, mine included, that I had not seen before. TgT

Michael Musto seems to be very nice (especially for a theater critic) but he seems to have little knowledge of theater history or any interest in the the choices or tasks of actors, directors, and writers. I would have loved to know more about how the original Torch Song got transferred to Broadway from off-Broadway, how Michael Urie chose to interpret the role in the revival, etc. Susan should have jumped in here.

I actually know a lot about theater history and the tasks of creative artists. And as I stated, I saw the original Broadway version. But we had less than a half hour to interview three people. We couldn't go into detail about, for example, the elaborate trip of the original three plays. Most people found this show informative and entertaining. I'm sorry you disagree.
