- This is my personal ranking of the Tales of series with a tier list. I cover even some of the Japanese titles (the ones that have at least a fan translation).

I'd rank Tales of Arise in the A tier. Yup, it's THAT good, just... not a masterpiece :)
@@fq4580 You can absolutely start any Tales game as beginner, all Tales have individual and easy to learn but hard to master combat system.
But .... Im afraid once you start Tales of Arise first, you may hard to accept other Tales because Arise graphics just Top notch among all.
I started from Symphony, after many years then started Arise, then Berseria then Vesperia, i tell you it really took me some times to get use to older graphics and UI system.

In my opinion,
Legendia has the best cast and soundtrack,
Abyss has the best story,
Graces has the best battle system,
Symphonia has the best villain, world building and challenging dungeons,
Vesperia has the best overall gameplay,
Xilia has Alvin, Rowen and Gaius who are all badass dudes,
Berseria has the best skits.
Haven't played all of these but I like this take.
Laihoard nah you should never take these types of “takes” lol because people that try to write these types of comments, are always bullshitting through the whole comment because they try to include every single title, and then trying to give each one a “best of” title even tho it doesn’t actually deserve it and they’re just trying to give it a title so that they can write these types of comments lol

Personally I think both Abyss AND Vesperia have gripping lots. Though I'll nitpick and say vesperia is a slow cooker at the beginning but after Barbos it definitely gets good.
I'm still disappointed at Namco we hadn't gotten a re-release for Xillia 1 and 2 on Steam
The characters were some of the best parts of Abyss. So much nuance and at the time, some of the darkest plotlines in a tales game. Abyss is an auto S tier for me.
Agree on every point, esp on being one of the darkest plotlines. [spoilers] There were at least 2 mass murders and protag was condemned to die for how many times.
Luke Von Fabre has one of the best character development arcs of any game I've ever played. Goes from completely unlikable and annoying to a self aware person who suffered some mentally destroying stuff. He overcame it all and transforms into a true respectable hero.
How is it not the darkest plotline you blow up a city and that's just in the early game ?

Yup, luke went to a WHOLE rollercoaster of emotions after those events, HUGE character development, one of the best main protagonist of the tales, and abyss IS the best in the series for me, S for me too andmy 3th favorite game of all time (and then final fantasy 8 and suikoden 2)

I love these ranking videos! I watch all your videos and I am glad you generally don't trash games and seem to get enjoyment out of most of the games you play. However, because of this when you REALLY enjoy a game it's hard for me to tell how much because you seem to like most games, so these ranking videos help put your favorites into perspective. More of these please!
Erick is usually pretty good about finding and describing the positive aspects of the games he talks about. I feel he evaluates them fairly. Very few games receive pure hate from Erick.
He tends to be pretty honest, so even though he enjoys quite a bit of titles, he'll usually describe enough of it for me to get a feel for it. These rankings are helpful though because if you aren't checking out most of his videos, you might miss out on what he said about a title in several other videos. Hell, I've actually taken to just jotting down in a spreadsheet what games he mentions in each video so I can quickly check out the relevant videos later when I start looking into a title.
Having finished only berseria two days ago, i enjoyed pretty much you ranking every game and giving some guidance for their strong points. Very nice video.

Tales of phantasia is my favorite in term of story and exploration. Its my first tales game as well, hook me to the series tales of namco
Same, is an awesome game. The music, the story, the characters, the difficulty.
A perfect 16 bit jrpg just like FFVI and Chrono Trigger.
It was my first as well, though now my favorite is Berseria. I first played Phantasia in the late 90s when the English fan translation patch for the SNES became available and was impressed with it's quality. Nowadays Phantasia is considered very clunky, but for it's time it was a great game and the story holds up to this day IMO.
tales of phantasia works great on the psx, specially with the translation patch. the gba ver is an atrocity that shouldnt even be counted as a game.
Phatasia is one of my favourite jrpgs. It could be nostalgia though. I’m playing Berseria right now and oh boy this game has a weak story and character motivations. It seems like it is a ”dark” game made for kids. People may think otherwise of course.
I’m planning on playing Vesperia next.
Glad to see some love for Legendia! It's also my favorite Tales game and, you're right, it's nowhere as bad as people make it out to be. The only complaint I've heard about the game that I think is valid is repeating dungeons you've already completed when doing the Character Quest segment, but I had so much fun with the game that it didn't bother me personally.
When I played it I didn't know what the R3 button was so played the whole game without the World Map. I don't recommend doing this. It added at least 3-4 hours to my first play through! Great game though
Man, I love your videos! Anyway, my favorites are the 2 Xillia games. They really need to remaster them or at least port them so I can play them again on my PS4.

Good ranking. I'm glad someone finally does some coverage over all the tales of for the fan. For my list, I probably just switch Xilia 2 with Vesperia because I'm more interested in a rouge-like story over the story of time travel shenanigans. And Legendia with Abyss mostly because I like the story of redemption over the more plain version of Legendia; just reference because I read too many mangas with story development of Legendia. Overall, thank you for cover this.
Would even say berseria is one of my absolute favourite games, had so much fun playing it, really like the darker touch
Sadly I am limited to PC Games hope Xillia gets remaked someday looks like the type of game I would like

Davidinc convinced me to revisit the tale series again and I ever happy he did!!
My first was Destiny at 10 years old and even though I thoroughly ebjoyed it, I never touched the series again, but I played Berseria in 2018 and loved it and Vesperia Definitive earlier this year and it was sooo good! I am currently playing Phantasia on my SNES classic while I wait for Arise.

0:26 You can find translated scripts in the Internet. I have fully completed the remake of Tales of Destiny (for PS2) and Tales of Destiny 2 (the real Tales of Destiny 2) in hard level and they both have a superb gameplay and battle system, harder than most of the other Tales of. Navigating through the menu was not hard at all, although I recommend learning katakana. I have not played Tales of Rebirth, but the same thing applies to this game.
Currently trying to play all the Tales games that got either official or fan-translated releases in English in release order after playing Vesperia and Berseria on PS4. Both of those amazing games and Phantasia thus far is amazing. I messed around a bit in Graces F and I think that one may be nice once I get to it.

Tried many times to complete Tales of destiny, Phantasia and symphonia but it doesn't give me the vibe for some reason. I have to try the newer one so thank you again for you're list
Love that all my favorites are at least A tier or higher. I couldn't get thru Symphonia, I didn't grow up with it so when I played it later I felt the game aged poorly. I would personally put Abyss in S tier but I am biased because that was my first game in the series. Sure Luke is insufferable towards the beginning but once you learn why I just found myself hooked even more and wanted to see him progress.
Also, shoutout to Xillia 2 for having the best opening in the entire series.

Vesperia will forever be my favorite. Mainly in its narrative of how far are you willing to go to see that your sense of justice done and the conflicts that present themselves especially with Yuri and Flynn during the second half.
I’m taking a break from the great Tales of Vesperia and playing Tales of Zestiria and while it’s not as wholesome with character Developement as Vesperia, I’m still enjoying it although my gripe is the battle system is pretty rough. Haha. I just hack and slash but sometimes that doesn’t cut it. Cannot wait to see your review of Tales of Arise.

Symphonia's ranking is surprising to me and so is Legendia even though I agree it gets too much hate. I'd put it towards the middle of my tier list personally.

I've only played Vesperia Definitive Edition so far. I enjoyed it but it was nowhere near as memorable as I read it was. Nostalgia is definitely a dangerous thing when recommending something; or maybe my sensibilites are not a good match for the franchise. I did like Yuri though. I really want to try the Xillia games next. It's a shame Tales of Rebirth isn't fan translated because when I took a glimpse, that game seems to be a bit darker than the standard Jrpg. It has a great OP too.
I agree in regards to Rebirth. A story that reflects racism and conflicts between cultures? Sounds like an interesting pitch.
Try XILLIA 2 ON RPCS3 EMULATOR AND DOWNLOAD CHEAT ENGINE AND THERE A CHEAT FOR UNLINK MODE WHEN MULTIPLAYER WITH 1.5 SPEED HACK UR TALKING BEST JRPG EVER MAN
Vesperia combat system dephness and the replayability around it is what makes it shine.

I haven’t watched all your videos, yet. But from what I have seen so far on your channel, it is fantastic! I enjoyed watching your rankings video just now and I have no issue with the whole thing because it is your video, your channel, your opinion and everything in between and I definitely respect that. Very fair assessment on the GBA version of Phantasia as I don’t think it is worth getting and playing, at all. The same thing applies to the GBA version of Lunar 1, at least to me. Lunar Dragon Song on DS is even worse and that game really should not exist, I swear!

IIRC, Tales of Hearts R was exclusive at GameStop and I was lucky enough to buy a copy then before it was too late. Phew.
I don’t think I have all the time and money in the world to buy every game from any series or genre or whatever and that also applies to the Tales of games from Bandai Namco. There will always be something for everyone, am I right?

I love that someone loved the Xillia's as much as me. People seem to hate so much on them and it always confused me. They are 2 of the most beautiful looking games in the series. With a badass addictive battle system, great lovable characters (even the little girl character, who I loved, especially the one in Xillia 2) and a great story. Also loved Legendia, I felt the battle system was clunky AF tho, but I played it for the first time last year so it just didn't age well I guess. Love the graphics, character designs and characters a ton though! Def does not deserve the hate. Keep up the great vids!

Phantasia got 2 PSP remakes namely the Full Voice Edition and the Cross Edition. The Full Voice Edition was ported to mobile in 2014 but was discontinued a few months after (this version was also released in English and the English script was actually completely redone). The Cross Edition is included in Narikiri Dungeon X so it's two games in one. This version actually has updated combat and Magic and Summoning don't freeze time anymore. I played a bit of it on an emulator and got up to the point where I met Rhea Scarlet. This is the best version of Phantasia hands down.
can you make top rpgs that doesn't have random encounter?
I dont know why people say Berseria is dark 'compared' to the others. The other games have plenty of dark moments that contradict the lightheartedness the series is known for. Still love the story, dont get me wrong

I could be wrong but I think Microsoft paid for exclusivity in the west for Vesperia but would have been long expired by the time Definitive Edition came out. They did attempt to push some JRPGs on 360 with it, Lost Odyssey, Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant, Star Ocean 4 and Eternal Sonata(although those PS3 ports did come to the west unlike Vesperia).
I have Hearts R on Vita and forgot about it, guess I should play it eventually.
I honestly thought because the ps3 was difficult to develop and the wii was underpowered which is why that generation was struggling to produce good jrpgs until towards the end of it.
seeing legendia so high on this list surprises me, not because i think its bad, (i actually havent gotten to play it yet) but because i just never hear anyone talking about it.

I fully agree. Xillia 1 and 2 are flipping fantastic. Vesperia might be my favorite because it was the first one I played, but the Xillia games were amazing to play. I think most people like Symphonia because of nostalgia. I didn't actually play it until about 2016, after I had already played Vesperia, Abyss, Legendia, Graces, Xillia, Xillia 2, and Zestiria. Let's just say the gameplay is a little rough compared to the rest of those.

Tales of the Abyss just hit all the right notes for me, set the gold standard for the combat, the music, the story all fantastic
Tales of Vesperia, in all honesty should of been the perfect Tales of game, the visuals are the best in the series the combat was solid (not as good as Abyss but very solid) music sublime..... The only thing is... In the third act of Vesperia they dropped the ball, not terribly mind you, still a solid ending but the main Villain should of been somebody else (Zagi... Ala FF VI Kefka style plot twist)

I’m late to the party, but I would LOVE a Legendia Remaster. I don’t think the game was that bad either. If they could update some of the graphics, shit I’d pay 60 bucks for it!

whoa there, had to back a little bit to hear you ore clearly what you said. Talked a bit to fast for me to hear what game was what. Never really played the Tales series only seen the walktrhough, maybe I felt teh stories or the side quests where overwhelming for me to understand
even so, I can see some great stories in them. Strange though I did nto expect Xillia to be ranked high, I thougth people called that one of the worse games after Zestria. But again, never played them so what do I know?

I've only ever played Symphonia, Abyss, Hearts R, and Radiant Mythology. They're all alright for what they are. I think Symphonia starts off strongest, but ends up being way longer than it should be and I always ended up dropping it around the 60 or so hour mark. Abyss I did end up finishing it after years of owning it on 3DS. It had a similar problem, but I stuck through it to the end after pulling up a guide to get to all the end-game cutscene triggers, both because I was a bit annoyed at the game and because I was more interested in the characters in the end. Hearts R I haven't played a ton of, but seems more cliche than the previous 2, making it a bit more difficult to get far in. Radiant Mythology was just mindless grinding, albeit fine for what it is.
I guess that probably makes Abyss my favorite? But I'm not sure if I'd call any of them that great, at least for my tastes. No clue if there are any others that are a more reasonable length or have a less cliche anime story, but I do remember eyeing Xillia pretty much the entire PS3's life. I just never bit the bullet.

So my order from best to least... 1) Tales of Vesperia ...2) Tales of the Abyss... 3) Tales of Xillia 2... 4) Tales of Symphonia... 5) Tales of Graces f...6) Tales of Legendia...7) Tales of Xillia... 8) Tales of Zestiria... 9) Tales of Berseria... 10) Tales of Arise... 11) Tales of Symphonia 2
My ranking of all games, minus Radiant Mythology games and mobile games/spin-offs, and minus originals of remasters (completely remade games will be ranked alongside originals)
S-tier: Vesperia, Rebirth, Destiny PS2, Abyss
A-tier: Hearts R, Berseria, Symphonia, Hearts DS, Innocence R
B-tier: Eternia, Graces F, Xillia, Phantasia (PSP, PS1, probably SNES too), Narikiri Dungeon X (which I don't consider a spin-off, as it only involved the Phantasia cast)
C-tier: Xillia 2, Zestiria, Destiny 2, Legendia - I know you love it, Eric, but the dungeons just suck.
D-tier: Innocence DS, Destiny PS1, Dawn of the New World
F-tier: Phantasia GBA, Tempest
IMO, Tales of Destiny (PS2) has the best battle system in the series. I still have to play Rebirth though.

I would've never played Xenosaga if I wasn't interested in KOS-MOS design. And that pulled me into Xenogears and Xenoblade. An amazing series that I would've missed if not for that initial pull!

I would put Graces F in S tier (loved the story and more tactical battle system)
I would downgrade Legendia to A, bc it's a great game, just not enough to S IMO
And also upgrade Vesperia to S tier, bc it's an all around amazing game, very few bad things can be said about it.
Oh, I would also upgrade Eternia to A tier, I think the chars are very likeable and good 2d battle system. It has an animated series spinoff with 13 episodes, very funny and well made.
Eternia/destiny 2 is easily a S tier game it’s one of the best games on ps1 and one of the best tales games period.
I've played Vesperia, Graces, Abyss, Arise, and Xillia now. I've put a handful of hours into Hearts as well. The only one I didn't like was Abyss. Way too much backtracking and going back and forth to advance the plot a few steps at a time. Luke was also not a good lead. My favorite so far may be Arise, but Vesperia is a close second, with Xillia at third. Vesperia was the first I played way back in 2009 on the Xbox 360. I still have a number to play through in this series, looking forward to getting all caught up and seeing how my tier compares to yours!
i didnt play all Tales games cause of localization but in general i put them in 3 categories: old school, prime time and newer generations
old school would be games like phantasia
prime time would be vesperia, symphonia etc
newer ones i would count from xillia
each "era" had ups and downs, good things and bad things. its hard to tell which is truly the best
depends on the person, the preferences and most of the time with what tales you grew up/was your first
my personal favorite is Graces F
i had the most fun with it, imo the best combat system (together with xillia 1), the sheer amoubt of sidequests/collectables/secrets/generall stuff to do blew my mind
and i love to know what happens with the world or the characters, so the after story edition was a blessing for me
for example, Vesperia just end, no real conclusion what the after effects were
my other favorites, while i like most of them, are Xillia 1 and berseria
i can also tell which i basically cant like: Zestiria (wasted potential... i liked the characters and the basic story idea) and symphonia 2 (bad characters, bad story. i enjoyed the pokemon like system tho and to see the after effects in the world after 1)
I've played 4 of the tales games personally 1, 2 on PS which I still have and loved both of them so much. Also I've got Vesperia on switch which I've played through half of it and enjoy it, and I tried to get into Tales of the Abyss I liked the anime more than the game I tried to play it on my 3DS, but i just couldn't get into it. I bought Berseria, and want to play it one of these days as well as Tales of Hearts R which I have for my Vita that i'd like to get through one of these days as well. I haven't played 1 and 2 in forever, but I do believe I enjoyed 2 over the first one slightly more, but still would rank them high based on my memory of loving both games, and Vesperia is great as well which I need to work on finishing still :P.

I'd swap Berseria and Zestiria just for Zestiria's "not enough dev time" jank & put Abyss in A for sure, myself. Are you weighting these based on the writing at all? Vesperia's really streamlined as far as gameplay goes, but the writing was so Nothing that I ended up legitimately mad at it by the end, lol.

Im honestly surprised people like Xillia so much. When I played the first one I thought the main character was insufferable and whiny, more so than Abyss's main character in the beggining. I also Thought the story was a bit rushed and certain aspect/tropes were done way better in previous tales games and the world just kinda meh. The only thing ill give it credit for is the battle system. playing as a fleshed out Brawler who can pull off some serious punch/kick combos was really refreshing compared to the average swordfighter movesets we've grown used to, and is what drove me to finish the game to completion even though I hated everytime the main character opened his mouth.
Ahh, always love to see the Xillia love. It was my first Tales game and I still love it to death
I thoroughly agree, with the exception of Eternia which is my personal favorite.
you should've put star ocean in this list to compare how tri-ace went differently to namco in pushing from phantasia.
Might as well include Radiata Stories and the rest of the games with similar combat, maybe even Infinite Undiscovery.
@@asmodeus58XX Funny thing is Infinite Undiscovery probably takes place in the Star Ocean universe in the same timeline as the rest of the series so yeah you could count it.
But its not the combat system, its the fact that the original star ocean is like phantasia 2 when you watch gameplay and ascetics
agree with most of it.. except i´d put xillia a bit down, and abyss up.. legendia and abyss are my favorite games of the series.. also enjoyed tempest a lot more than others do^^
Fully agreed with that Berseria placement. It has the most interesting narrative of the series, with a laser sharp character focus.
Now, as for those Symphonia 1/2 placements? That was a Choice 😅

The only great character in Tales of Abyss.
Erick, I bought Tales of Legendia about a month ago after hearing you rave about the game in a previous review (bought it on Ebay for $15,). Although I don't think the game is terrible as some people claim it is, it is by far not a masterpiece IMO. The main gripe with the game is the battle system, which is a huge part of any video game. Basically it becomes a monotonous button masher, and to make matters worse, the enemies have so much HP (they aren't hard...just too much life given to them)....these battles take too long and just feel like a chore. To compound things, the battles are all random, and occur too often (even with using holy water). On the plus side, I do like the characters in this (that is the one thing that Tales of Bersia lacks...likable characters), The storyline is good...but it is laid out weird...after beating the main part of the game, you go into an epilogue, that is almost as long as the original story, covering character's backstories, it is well done, but it would have made more sense to put this in the middle of the game, vs. after the ending of the story...it's like watching a movie that starts with the beginning, jumps to the ending, then goes into the middle. All in all, I was glad I bought it because it was so cheap, but I don't really have the desire to play it again, and I can't even rank this game close to Bersia, or even Abyss.
I never rally got into the Tales Series till Symphonia and other PC releases but Tales of Legendia got my attention back on the PS2 and I never got a chance to go back and give it a go. I want a HD rerelease so bad.

Great to see Legendia getting some love. As far as I'm concerned, nit only was it the last 2D game, but it also had the best 2d battle system
If that the best 2d battle system, I'd hate to see the worse one. I just played this game and the battle system is the worst part of the game. Just a monotnous button masher....I literally beat the enemies by just mashing the attack button in one hand, while I drank out of the other hand. Love the charaters in this one though.
Eternia has the best 2d battle system imo
Eternia was my first tales game and still my fave to this day 👍🏻
My personal ranking would be:
S: Berseria, Symphonia, Abyss
A: Xillia 2, Graces, Legendia
B: Zestiria, Vesperia, Hearts
C: Xillia, Eternia
These are the ones I finished. They are all good games. Is there even a bad Tales of game?

Never played Xillia 2, but Ive enjoyed the first on and Graces f. Is it worth try today?
@@m4rcin847 It is worth trying, because it is better than the first Xillia, IMO. The only thing I didn't like was Ludger as a silent protagonist. But the story is great.

You can't say that Xillia has the best battle system of the series when you haven't played Destiny DC, Destiny 2, and Rebirth on the PS2. It also sounds to me that you haven't played the PSP versions of Tales of Phantasia especially the last version (there were two ports) that was made which completely dances all over the outdated PS1 version in every way with full voice acting all way and complete overhaul of the battle system. Erick, I was able to play all three Japan only Tales games (Destiny DC, Destiny 2, and Rebirth) with a script at hand, and I was able to fully understand the story and characters. IMO, the battle systems on Destiny DC and Rebirth are better than Xillia, and anything that came after for sure. I have played every main Tales game including all three Tales of the World games, almost every version of Tales of Phantasia, but none of the DS titles unfortunately.
Erick, you really should try out the Japan only titles. You are missing out on what is consider to be the absolute best games in the series.

i love the world and story but i cant seem to get into the fighting system
My favorite due to Nostalgia is Eternia, but I think the best one is Symphonia with Berseria being a very close second.

I probably won't be playing Legendia because I play Tales games multiplayer and Legendia is the only home console Tales game that's single player only.
Just finished tales of legendia, excellent game, enjoyed it a lot it took me around 60 hours
