- VOCES8 sings the traditional German carol, 'Es ist ein Ros entsprungen' during a recording session for the group's album, EQUINOX.

A spotless Rose is blowing, sprung from a tender root,
Of ancient seers’ foreshowing of Jesse promised fruit;
Its fairest bud unfolds to light Amid the cold, cold winter;
and in the dark midnight.
The Rose which I am singing, whereof Isaiah said,
Is from its sweet root springing in Mary, purest Maid;
For, through our God’s great love and might,
The blessed Babe she bare us in a cold, cold winter’s night.
This Flower, whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air, Dispels with glorious splendour the darkness everywhere;
True Man, yet very God, From sin and death
He saves us, and lightens every load.
O Jesus, by being born out of this vale of tears,
Let Thy help guide us to the hall of joy In your father’s kingdom,
As we praise You eternally;
O God, give us that.

"Es ist mein Ros ensprungen" was my dear grandpa's favourite carol. The best part of each christmas holiday, no, the best part of the whole year, was when the whole family gathered around the burning candles and sang the traditional 4-voices version of Praetorius. My mother, my sister and me used to sing soprano, my aunt and grandma alto, my unle and dad tenor and my grandpa was the bass. And what a voice my grandpa had, deep and mellow! His singing filled the whole room, and so did his warmth. In 2019 he died and there is no one left to sing the bass. Every time we sing this song we can hear and feel how he is missing. But still I'll never stop loving and finding comfort in this tune. Thank you, Voces8 and team, to bring it to such perfection.
I sing baritone and bass. My heart goes out to you and my heart is warm to read of your great love. Best-
A lovely tradition for your family. Your grandfather sings with you from the place where all the tremendous choral voices who have passed on join in.
Fantastic, und es ist Wunderbar
my favorite song of all times
When you sing it together this year, if you really listen hard, with your heart, you will hear him and his beautiful bass voice. Singing together builds a unity which can transcend that barrier we call death. I know. It has happened to me.
As a German this was and still is my fav Christmas song
A young Scottish man here from Shetland agrees with you. 'A Great and Mighty Wonder' sounds more uplifting and soul piercing in the German tongue.
An elderly America agrees with both of you.
Totally agreed!
Gives me goose bumps on my arms....
Christmas Greetings from Salem Massachusetts
I'm Canadian, and this is my favorite German Christmas carol. Sending you love and hugs from Canada ❤
@@rosieconvoy4671 Another Canuck who loves this carol and wishes y'all the best
Yes! Thank you for your testimony.
My wife and I were married December 27 and this was played at our wedding.
how cool is that
"Es ist ein Ros entsprungen... aus einer Wurzel zart" - one of my favorite songs ever... tell me again that German cannot be beautiful...
It is very old. 16th century text and melody was sung as you hear here. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Es_ist_ein_Ros_entsprungen
@@xpeace77 Vielen Herzlichen Dank❣️
German is, to me the sweetest language of all. The best classic were written in German.
If you like the song so much, have a listen to our version, it's a little more jazzy, yet very calm; ruclips.net/video/WmLe6OuDnf8/видео.html regards, Wolfgang from Sund Yard.
You can't beat a good Wurzel!
Listening to this gives me comfort to go on living in this messed up world that is full of such hate, evil and darkness
Preatorius lived in the sxteenth century, an 80 year holy war had Europe in it’s grip. Armies traveled around the countryside plundering, cities were beseiged and starved untill they surrendered, people were burned alive at the stake for their religious convictions. It seems a little more civilized at present, but as we know after two world wars humans are a destructive species. Music like preatorius his remarkable work can give us some comfort in times of despair
Amen my friend
I take comfort in the belief expressed in this song that the King of Kings and only ruler of princes, dwells within each of us, now and always. He is not throned above or in some far beyond, but Immanuel, God with us.
Londonfogey Amen! I get despondent at times but I am cheered by the fact that Jesus Christ reigns supreme and will do for all time.
Amen. This is true.
The young lady who sings the first solo is a treasure. In heaven, the angels will gather round to listen to her.
Ah c’mon man, don’t hold back. Tell us how you *really* feel.
I feel the same way.
I agree. Her one voice defines the whole blend. It is pure, full and rich, sweet. Perfection.
Well, Steven Poe, beautiful words! Thank you!
Concur!!
I’ll add that all the voices are perfect as well. The basses have a great open and overtone rich timbre, the tenor and male alto lines are delicately handled for perfect blend and expression.
We appreciate all the work it takes behind the scenes to accomplish this.
My grandmothers favorite..Growing up in the early 1900s.- In northwest Minnesota...spoke only German till the age of 16...went to heaven in the early 1970s...My favorite Advent Carol....German and English! Merry Christmas to all!!!
one of my faves, growing up in 60s germany.
i'm from northeast minnesota! can relate to the german heritage. i grew up learning this song as well
Froeliche Weihnachten an alle!
@@urmorph Und Sie auch!
This brings me back Swedish church visits of my younger days. I'd liked singing along to it, my apologies to all.
I "discovered" Voces 8 during the pandemic. It has become my favorite choral group.
This song makes me cry 😢 every time I hear it. All the vocalists are excellent, but the bass singer is the most beautiful to me.
Find the Kings Singer’s version. It’s here on RUclips.
So, how old? No one is sure, but the tune most familiar today originally appeared in the Speyer Hymnal (printed in Cologne in 1599), and the familiar harmonization was written by German composer Michael Praetorius in 1609.
Let’s just say, over 400 years of soothing souls at this time of year.
You blow me away with your professionalism and musicality. It is easy to forget that you sing so much of the wonderful harmony practically pianissimo, yet pure and fluent and fully audible. A beautiful carol, beautifully sung. Furthermore, your German pronunciation and stressing are flawless.
So schön,das es fast der Welt entrückt scheint 😢 greetings from Germany and merry Christmas 🎄🔔☃️
Ich hab nie etwas schöneres gehört. Danke!
This is my all-time favorite bass part. And the overall harmony is stellar.
One of my all time favourites, especially in German. Simply beautiful!
Wundervoll interpretiert mit herrlichem genussvollen Tempo gesungen. Herzberührend. Danke dafür.
You don't have to understand German just listening says it all just calm and peaceful this sort of music and harmonize ing just my cup of tea Bravo!!! cant get enough
found this video by happy coincidence. It was the favourite Song of my father. He sung in a choir half of his life.Sadly he passed away...way way to early. He often sang the first verse, just for fun or to warm up before practise evenings, one of my strongest childhood memories,me as a young child smiled at him and said something like "uh,thats so ooold". He smiled back and said "i know". The last time i cried was at his funeral nearly 8 years ago,and today ,hearing this song again!
Condolences. May your dad’s soul rest in peace, Amen
This sounds like Christmas as a child, to me. We sang it every year at the Cathedral, I loved it 🧡
Thank you. For me this is the most beautiful Christmas choral there is together with ‘Maria durch ein Dornwald ging’ - which this group is also singing.
I was raised in an atheist household, where inquiries into faith and supernatural grace were openly mocked and discouraged. I first heard this carol at the age of thirteen on a Christmas LP (yes, I am THAT old) my mother had bought. I listened to the words, and was intrigued by the mysterious and steadfast faith expressed therein. Thus began a journey that culminated in my baptism and confirmation in the Catholic Church, a full twenty years later. I will forever be grateful for the happy accident of hearing this carol that started me on that journey. ❤
Jason, Wonderful! You are living proof of God's work in our world.
There are no accidents. That was grace.
Bless your, Jason! From a Dutch RC Christian I am glad that the Lord is in your heart!
That's just wonderful, welcome brother. God bless you
Thank you for sharing Jason. Continued peace to you on your journey. This song connects me to something mysterious and eternal as well. It captures something of age old longings - it's hauntingly beautiful - it grounds me yet also transports me at the same time.
Amazing rendition. Equally amazing is the fact that a song that's centuries old still sounds fresh, moving, relevant. Despite the time span separating us, we are our ancestors, and they were us
Beautifully stated.
great music is timeless
Thank you, obrigada, merci!
First heard when singing in German choir in Dublin. Have loved it ever since.
Ihr seid unglaublich gut. VIELEN DANK
I love that you’re singing it in it‘s original language❤️
Keep searching. Knock and the door will be opened to you, every blessing

I am weeping... somewhere between pain and bliss. So perfect.

@@chrismalone5325 Oh dear :D Am I developing a bad reputation? :)
This beautiful hymn makes me cry every single time I hear it. May the love and peace of Christ be with all of you this christmas season.
Favourite song of my grandad. Original from Italy.
And to you and all your families, have a Very Merry & Blessed Christmas 🎄
Me too. One cannot hear this music and these words without being overcome with longing for the Living God who humbled Himself and took on our frail flesh. Praised be Jesus Christ now and forever!
I agree. Listening to it again on 9 December 2020 after a very difficult year.
Me too, I think to my childhood 😍😍😍😢😢
Traditional arrangement. Perfect.
"Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" IS my FAVE of ALL Christmas songs/tunes. Yes!!!
Thank you so much, performers!!!!!
Beautiful
My favorite Christmas hymn.
Thank's so very much for singing one of my favourite German Xmas Songs!!! I sang together with you - the alto of course, because my voice has dropped down since 30 years. I love your voices so much, the perfect harmony. Thank's from the German friend of Cologne. Stay healthy!
Gelobt sei Jesus Christus. LG🥰
I love this song! In German, English and my native Danish - the melody is just amazing
My mum's favourite carol, and now mine. Thank you VOCES8 for such a beautiful and tender version.
Hello everyone. Happy Christmas from West Lancashire. Blessings on this fine group of young people. Caution - low flying Angels. Jesus is Lord. Happy birthday Master. D
This piece takes me back to my childhood, I loved it as child although a tear always flowed for so many things on Christmas, il hold it close forever, thank you for this beautiful arranged ❤
My grandmother loves this piece. She's always telling stories about how she used to sing it as a little girl. It's sad she can't sing it anymore because her voice is always cracking
Most of our traditional gospel song were adapted from Germany song.. We are bataknese from Indonesia
This new soprano is great.
My favourite Christmas Carol. Beautifully sung.
I love this melody, like most hymns, so familiar, yet so foreign. You can hear the echo of time and all the people who have sung and cherished this sacred music throughout the centuries. A truly magical experience! 😊❤🙏🏽
Lovely. I learned this the first year I did German 1969. Had a rural Australian upbringing, no languages other than English. U of ADELAIDE had a German course for beginners. So I went for it eventually majoring in German. Still enjoy poetry and music especially with german text
Unglaublich tolle Aufnahme. Riesen Kompliment!
A little early for Christmas music and spirit, but this is so heartbreakingly beautiful. One of my Mom's favorite songs. God, I miss her so much....😓
@ian dIndeed. A song this sublime can be enjoyed anytime of the year. It usually kicks in for me right after Thanksgiving. Will listen to it tomorrow as Christmas Eve is my favorite but also painful time of the year. Peace, comfort, and, joy to all!
This comfort is off the charts
In the turmoil of 2020, this is soothing and consoling to listen to. Happy Holidays to you, VOCES8!
Schoener geht es nicht mehr. Danke dafuer 😇🥰
Angels such walked through my room! From Germany with love!
My mothers favorite. She passed on this 26 day of Dec 1998.
simply breaks through the cracks in all my walls, & facades and reconnects me with my soul - thank you!😎
Heavenly, ethereal and infinitely sublime! My cold heart has been warmed
Beautifully performed by Voces8! And their pronounciation is so on point! Perfectly sung. Lifts heart and soul!
Hearing this in June 2020 makes me wonder whether I will ever have another happy Christmas in this life.
Rise up your heart, you will! God bless you!🙏😀
Christmas is all about being born and we can be born every day, even every minute if we don't let the outside world pollute ourselves with hate, indifference and pursuit of power.
Hopefully you will have one this year!
love u guys so.much
What can one say but VOCES8 are beautiful singers. I love the "ancient" music.
You guys are insanely good. One of favorite carols!
Wunderschön gesungen! Vielen Dank!
Sung beautifully! Thank you!
Nicely done, hauntingly beautiful carol that so represents this sacred season. Merry Christmas to all.

Quite simply: divine. Thank you.

Oh, ein Idiot
@@erhardgeiger6199 Warum Idiot? Es ist ein schönes Deutsches Lied, oder?
My most favorite Christmas coral since my childhood. Thanks for singing it in such a heavenly manner. Goosbombs feeling.
Absolutely sublime and world-class performance! Speaks to ones soul during these difficult times.
Superb bass and on top pronunciation. Perfect!

"Too late have I come to know you, Beauty ever ancient and ever new!" ~ Augustine of Hippo
Your harmonies are perfect. I love the solo parts too. I feel like I just went into the presence of Almighty God. Thank you for sharing this lovely rendition.
I heard this every Weinachten growing up with my German Oma & Opa. Opa was in the männerchor(men's choir). This song always brings tears to my eyes. It's full of memories, sadness, hope & beauty. 🌹
Sublime, angélique. Quelles merveilleuses voix. Un rêve !
THE INCREDIBLE ACOUSTICS THERE!!! FANTASTIC. BEAUTIFUL.
From my childhood untill last chrismas I always thought the singing about a horse. I came out with that last chrismas, my grandma laughed so hard about it. I asked my brother and later my sister in front of my grandma and both thought the same. my 85 grandma couldnt stop laughing anymore. Her father always joked after the song with her: "Jetzt ist mir wieder der Gaul durchgegangen" (the horse went wild). And because of that, because she told us the story in our childhood, we really thought its about a horse.
Ross is an old german word for horse (today usally Pferd). But Ros is an old version of the word for rose (usally Rose). The word Gaul means horse too, but its a negativ word for a horse. I understand why non-germans find our language so difficult. So many words for similar things, but always small diffrent meanings in the details.
I love this song ! But now thanks to you all it became my favorite Christmas song ! Congratulations what a marvelous performance . Thank you
So very beautiful! Thank you.
Sublime. Thank you.
The articulation of that "k" in kleine is a work of art in itself
why?
Superb. Thank you for sharing.
SO beautiful!!
Again, listening to each other is perfection. This has to be the best rendition I have ever heard. My ears and heart, elated to the days of "Kings Singers" and now "Voctave".
Simply wonderful, timelessly beautiful. Thank you.
Thank you for singing all versus of the most famous german christmas carol. Friedrich Spee + Michael Praetorius + voces8 = gospel directly from heaven
