can i do buttonholes instead of grommets for the lace?

I wouldn't advise it. Metal grommets are used bc high tension of the lace would rip the fabric of the corset. If the corset isn't very tight then it could work for a bit but repeatedly pulling on the lacing when you put it on many times would cause too much friction and wear through the fabric.
