Really appreciate a thorough demonstration and review of this. So many bag reviewers on youtube just talk talk talk but less about actual showing (which I find weird considering it's YT, it's video) and even less actually demonstrate it by wearing it and showing how you use and access things. I really appreciate you demonstrating what does and doesn't fit into them, gives a better idea of weather or not my gear will fit.
I’ve been waiting for them to release this bag for a little while now, and genuinely my first thought today when it finally got announced was “I hope Chase makes a video about this one.”
Your review ROCKS! I have Thule Covert 32l. I love it but recently I bought two bloody expensive lense and I don't feel secure. Now I see Shimoda protects! And is compact :)
Hey Chase! Awesome review. I feel you on the “lonely dad” bit. haha! My thing for an EDC is that I am out with my kids a lot and always find I end up needing to have a little extra space for kids stuff (jackets, hoodies, snacks, toys, books, crayons, stickers… ). I ordered the 30l version of the Shimoda as my Boundary Bay Prima is falling apart a bit after a year of hard use. Which is a bummer as I do like that system a lot, even if it is on the heavy side. In Spain (no kids) with a 12 year old NorthFace Surge backpack at the moment on a bit of a writing retreat / work deep dive and seeing if maybe this floppy old pack is still serviceable. There are things I like a lot about it still. Just wish it was more structured. Old man back issue means I have done away with slings. So… back to the backpacks. Probably the most comfortable are my F-Stop Tilopa and Osprey Farpoint, but both too big for an EDC. My wife has the 25l Shimoda Explorer v2. Seems like a sweet bag, but too small for me. Anyhow. Just dropping a line. Keep being awesome and putting out great content that is both super informative and hella entertaining. And yes, I said hella because you’re hella dope man.
I had own Shimoda Explore v2 25L for 1 year. Had find it slightly small as a daily carry for me personally.. due to the stuff i bring to work. I had compare the size dimensions between Explore 25L and the new Urban explore 25L... seems the Urban explore 25L dimension are bigger than the explore v2 25L.. close to the explore v2 30L. Seems also to me this new series had resolve my issues with the explore v2 explore..their new waterbottle pockets, the quick access compartment at the left side, able to fit a 16inch laptop..and a simple backstraps that can hold my greenroom pouches in the urban explore series are brilliant. I had already pledge for the new urban explore 25L BOA after watching yours and other's review.😊😀
I have a Shimoda Explore V2 35l as my main camera bag. I love it, fell in a river with it once and got out and all my equipment was still dry. I also have the Mindshift Backlight 26L which now carries all my star tracker stuff. And lastly i just bought a Peak Design Zip 15L as a walk around bag if i dont want to carry all my stuff. I held out till the announcement of the Shimoda Urban before buying the Peak Design Zip but for my needs I felt it was too much like the Explore that i already own.
For camera gear I've been using the latest Shimoda Action X2 25L and 30L, before that it was the Shimoda Explore 25 and 30. Before that Peak Design Everyday 25L but learned to hate that bag - imagine laying that bag down on a sandy beach trying to get lenses out on one side and memory cards from the other side, a total mess; or walking around NYC with a water bottle on one of the side pockets, so to access the opposite side you need to remove the water bottle while putting it down on a grimy sidewalk on a busy street with pedestrians eyeing your expensive gear as you're fumbling from side to side, honestly the PD Everyday is one of the most awkward bags I've ever used. Living and shooting in NYC I've been waiting for the Shimoda Urban 25L (already backed, in tan!!!), for those sleek water bottle pockets, minimal design, and compartmentalization. SUPER stoked for this Urban line 😍😍
After giving it more thought I decided to become a supporter of this Kickstarter campaign and made a pledge for the 25L version. I’ve pledged before when the EXPLORER V2 was announced and actually got two, the 30L with large mirrorless ICU and 35L with the deeper DSLR ICU to use with my A1 that has a battery grip and I use with my bigger lenses. Without this new bag I already own 4 Shimoda bags including the original Explorer v1. I hope the new one will be a nice smaller back for local travel and then may try to sell my second E V2 30L I picked up from another user in mint new condition. Really enjoyed you video and your info on the product. When I reviewed the details on the inserts compared to the Explorer V2’s I felt that the 20L was very small, but I maybe wrong, so I went with the 25L. Thank you again and take care. Now I just need to wait until February of next year to get it.
I use my Bellroy DSLR sling most often, but when I need more gear I bring my Bellroy Venture backpack with a Wandrd insert. I also have a Peak Design everyday and a Lowepro Protactic. Each are great for their own purposes but I don’t travel with them because they aren’t flexible enough. This looks like it could win me over though.
Yoooo! You got all three sizes?! SO STOKED!!! But also, gotta convince you about back panel access. It's the damn best. Front panel means you're putting your harness in the dirt, side access means you can only get to some of your gear at a time. Back access rules, everything else drools.
Wow where to start, so ,any bags. Started with Peak Design, with the big traveller, then over to Shimoda. X50 too big I realised, then the X30 too small and recently the X40 which is ideal. Waiting on the kickstarter Urban because it will be ideal for business travel. Allowing me to carry my camera
Glad to see these new bags. Now which of my multiple Explorer V2 bags do I sideline to add one of these? Thank you for the video. Is there anything that compares the size of these bags to the Explorer V2 25L, 30L, and 35L?
Thank you for the insight..but thats the point of the "laptop cover flap"..you put it back the way it was to "cover" that compartment..so nothing falls in there..especially if its small items..haha but totally get your point in the example..you did that to show for a quicker access to the laptop..haha
I have alot of camera bags and own a few shimoda. My question is about weight. I travel alot and have a large bag or roller for the plane and want a small lightweight bag for daily use upon arrival. I dont want a 4 lb or 2 kilo bag. To me the shimoda explore V2 is too heavy. So may small daily was the wandrd duo or mindshift photocross. Is this bag too heavy? thanks
Hi Chase! Great review. I have a question though, can the 25 or 30L fit a thick laptop in an EVA case on the back or front laptop compartment? Mine is an ASUS TUF 15.6 gaming laptop at 3cm Thickness that I put in an EVA case for additional protection with 4.5cm thickness when the laptop is inside. I'm just curious because most of my camera bags will fit my laptop but with the Hardshell EVA case then it wont fit anymore. I'm a casual gamer and have mirrorless camera gears and a small drone when I travel. Laptop EVA case with Laptop inside Dimensions are: Length 28cm x Thickness 4.5cm x Height 49cm. Hope you can answer. Thank you!
Hi! With the 30L, do you think a rigged up small cinema camera, like a Sony FX3, with the top handle, lens, maybe a mic on top, fit in that top compartment?
is there a non-camera bag with a similar laptop storage sleeve? I feel like laptop sleeves in most backpacks are too tight, lippy / zippy. I'd love something with a simple flap like that.
Hi, you mention very quickly something about hip straps. Is the backpanel then fully go through? Can you indeed put a hipstrap fully through? As I don’t find the answer anywhere
Follow up question. What cameras do you have that you say you can put two in the 25L bag? Also with or without lenses on them ? Please clarify. Thank you.
@@chasereeves Any chance you can share a picture of your invert with this equipment in the bag? Typically shoot Sony but also have the Explorer V1 30L with a Canon R5 plus grip and more lenses but that’s getting too heavy to carry. Has in it a 15-35/2.8L, 24-70/2.8L, 70-200/2.8L, EF 35/1.4L II , 50/1.2L, and 85/1.2L. Two bodies and two lens is or one body and three smaller lenses will be great. Thank you again.
I don’t like how the laptop stows. I prefer to access the laptop compartment without opening the rest of the bag. My ancient Thule DSLR bag has a great way to stow and access a laptop from the side that comes in handy when going through airport security. Forgot to add, I hate it when zippers don't flow as you demonstrated.
Why is nobody mentioning the fact that the side camera access is on the wrong side? What were they thinking with a left-handed use camera? Do those cameras even exist?
I don't know, man. To me this looks like any other camera bag like, e.g., Peak Design. Super uninspiring design. And the features seem very similar to Shimoda's existing offerings. I guess I was hoping for something more stylish that I'd actually WANT to wear and that had features that were even more scaled down from their existing bags. I'm a camera bag junkie, but currently not interested in this one.
I‘m disappointed about this so called Urban series. Nothing has been improved for side access. Side access is important in Urban shooting imho. Who want to lay flat the pack on ground when doing shooting in Tokyo, NYC or London? The side access window should be long eough for two camera bodies width sitting side by side (with divider in between). Say 12 inches long, Some might argue not many people using two camera body with lens attached. If single body with a lens or two, why a bakcpack? Currently I am using Goruck like 21L backpack with 2 Billingham Hadley half inserts. Each insert house a camera with lens attached. Inserts are side access oriented place in the backpack. There is still room on upper section for a PD tech pouch. This Goruck like backpack is a CTactical 21L in X-Pac 50, accu guard zipper. No zipper flap. Not as comfort as a Shimoda on my back and not that easily access as typical camera backpack. But a 5.5 inches thick pack is much more welcome than a 7.5 inches up thickness pack in subways of any cities.
the business paper pause always gets me 😅
@1:45 for those who need it right now

Beautiful video as always Chase. ❤ Thanks Ian

I have been waiting for them to drop this new bag. Was pumped too see you all ready had a video for it! Keep up the awesome work! ❤
Holy crap you review so detailed and realistic I’m already sold on this bag and this channel. Subscribed!

These look really slick! Do you think the 25L would fit under and airplane seat?
Yea definitely.

Thank you Master of Bags 🙏
i use the wandrd, but as soon as this shimoda comes out ... i'll buy the 25 liters model ... it has all that i need from a camera backpack

That long pause to figure out the tripod is word 😂
Best review i have seen on this bag
Chase - I happened upon a review of the V2 Pakt Travel Backpack. The tweaks look awesome. Were you back at the design table for this version too?
Glad to see these new bags. Now which of my multiple Explorer V2 bags do I sideline to add one of these? Thank you for the video. Is there anything that compares the size of these bags to the Explorer V2 25L, 30L, and 35L?
Love the new do, Chase 😍
Does the 16inch MacBook fit comfortably in the 30ltr bag on the back of the bag?
Thank you for the insight..but thats the point of the "laptop cover flap"..you put it back the way it was to "cover" that compartment..so nothing falls in there..especially if its small items..haha but totally get your point in the example..you did that to show for a quicker access to the laptop..haha

I have a Sony a6400 and a zoom, 56 sigma and kit lense. Would this fit that? + nicknacks?
The Godfather of bag reviews.
Cheeky little business papers tease!

can you try to fit a 15-16inch laptop in the 20L ? really want to get that but i have a huge laptop
Hi, you mention very quickly something about hip straps. Is the backpanel then fully go through? Can you indeed put a hipstrap fully through? As I don’t find the answer anywhere
Just love your videos, just love
Would a a7r3 with a battery grip attached fit in the 25L and also be able to get it out of the side access?
Does the core unit include the zippered cover for when it is removed from the backpack?
This actually might be the goldilocks bag. Looks sick and does what it needs to do.
Follow up question. What cameras do you have that you say you can put two in the 25L bag? Also with or without lenses on them ? Please clarify. Thank you.
EOS R and R6, both with lenses (15-35 and 24-105). Those two both fit along with batteries etc.

any space to hold a tripod ?
As am urban photographer I prefer thinner dividers, less protection with more room space.
The dividers will compress and conform to the shape of your gear.
Lonely Dad. Hi! 😂

It sucks that the earliest us poor people need to wait until February, March next year to get this bag.

not a business paper....a tripod ;)
Why is this bag not even on Shimoda website? Can’t find any other info on this
I go to their website and that's the first thing I see. It's not in the top menu since it's still on Kickstarter, but their site does link to it
link to the bag doesn’t work
i like moment 1:55

You are going to use a roller bag??????? Say it ain’t so!
obviously obvious that you obviously have an obvious favorite word :-D and it's not materiality 😀
