Eddi Nice take it to a shop and get a pre purchase inspection. Preferably a BMW specialist. Make sure the vanos, timing chain and cooling system are in good shape. If all checks out go for it. There great cars and fun to drive. I drive an 02 as a daily
I just looked at an 03 e39 m sport with style 65 wheels.. but it's ~165k with the waterpump being recently done (due to leaking, not overheating), but was leaking power steering fluid, an engine noise that was claimed to be an exhaust leak from the exhaust ring, and a small vibration around 50mph (but this vibration really reminded me of when my wheels were not hub-centric and my tires were off balance, and he said he never noticed that before adding his spacers).. All in all, I was willing to take my chances with it given what I've read about the car.. Owner agreed to let me pay for smog before I purchased the car, all codes were "unset" because he just replaced the battery. Due to driving a different daily, he had no drive cycle data set. We even took a good 60~80 mile cruise around town to try and set them, but at the end, there were still at least 3 unset codes and I'm only allowed one for smog. Offered less than asking price so I can address the PS hose(s) (which I've read is a common issue on these v8s and can be a deteriorating nightmare if left unchecked) and the exhaust gasket, if he's able to get the data set and we can pass smog.. or offered his asking price should he decide to fix those issues while he still has the car in possession.. Was this foolish? Or should I trust my gut and jump on this find? I think his woman is making him sell his baby because they're having a baby; he first started selling it at an "I love it" price a while back, and even mentioned if it were a wagon, he'd keep it. Also during the 60~80 mile drive, I saw/felt/heard no issues of concern other than an occassional squeaky brake and the car performed well without overheating. At the end of the day, it was >20mpg on city streets..
Mileage shouldn't scare anyone about these cars, imo. How well was it kept and maintained is what's most important. Also, don't buy one unless you're ready to keep spending money for maintenance/repairs.
I’ve owned a 02 manual 540i, a 00 540i auto, a 06 4.4i x5, & a 4.8is x5… they all pull hard & after 90/100 mph it just increases speed effortlessly. The 4.8is x5 & manual e39 540 are some other breed 🚀💯
Times that I got on my stopwatch are: 0-60 ~ 5.3 seconds 0-100 ~ 13.5 seconds Faster than anything I've driven. Plus, the fastest speed limit in my state where I live is 70. So, the 0-100 won't be used very often :-)
OLD POST I KNOW...Own a 540i stg 2 and love it. I also own a modded LS2 GTO and a 2010 Corvette for perspective. Have you done a top speed run and shifted into 6th? If not, you may find that it's too tall and may fall back a bit from 5th, giving you the highest top end. Example: My stock LS2 GTO had 400 HP stock and 6Th was actually a 2nd overdrive and the car didn't have enough power to max out 6th. My top speed while stock, was achieved in 5th, not 6th. Just a thought...Love the M-Sport!!
Genadiy Ivken was his a 2003 540i M-Sport? They were not the same as a regular 540. Higher speed stall converter and 3.15:1 rear gears made them a little quicker. I assure you, mine was quick.
Thanks. It's pretty much stock. All I've done is remove the OEM silencer and muffler and replaced with 3" straight pipe with tip. I think it does pretty good for a big 4 door sedan.
Yes. 5-speed auto. I backed out of it just before it shifted to 5th. Was quickly running out of road. This car is currently for sale on Craig's list. corpuschristi.craigslist.org/cto/4904205328.html
Leonel Gomez well it depends. I have the same year and model but in the alpine white . the previous owner did not take care of it. so a lot of money was put into it. but if you take care of it,it is such a great car.
Whts the caution light in the middle of the dash? Looking to buy an E39 which has the light but not 100% sure what it means or the cost to fix it. (Thought it was an ABS/ASC light and could be fixed by just recalibrating the steering console) Also, can emissions be passed with the light on? Thanks =.
Derek Lindsay that would be a pretty dumb move on my part. I know where my 15 year old, 190,000 mile, 296hp, 4,000lb+ 4 door luxury sedan ranks. I wouldn’t waste my gas on a guaranteed loss. Lol. But you better be careful with them 600+hp M5s. They may give you a bit better run than I could.
Don't try and compare a C6 to an E39... It's apples and oranges, but if an old 4 door sedan can run with a C6, it may lose, but if it holds ground that says something..
I have the same car, trust me. It really gets up that fast. I love it when someone pulls up next to me and they think they have a fast car, lmao.
I am thinking of buying one 2003 E39 540I, 4.4I 115,000 miles, any thoughts? Thank you

Did you buy it? you won't be disappointed driving one. 02 is my daily

If you call that effortlessly then damn my 07 camry v6 did it even more effortlessly then this V8 😳 (If you dont believe me theres videos on youtube.)

I do 90% of the work myself so it's not too bad I get 22-24mpg highway and around 16 mpg in town
What is this civilized driving you speak of?
well answered, lol
I get 20 mpg around my town lmao
Pretty good acceleration
How did you manage to pull off a great time without wheel spin? Mine goes nuts when I plant it
I was in a concrete pad when I launched, and I've practiced a lot. Lol.
Wow
150 on my 97 one time
I think the noise at 29 seconds was from riding the painted line with my tires.
Wow, where were you driving that allowed you to get up that fast from a dead stop without any traffic?
Mexico...yes it was Mexico I'm pretty sure.
Looks like your going down hill, the needle never stops moving ..
That’s so sad to see with an automatic transmission. 😢
@@dhatchbernier I know. That’s why I traded it 9 years ago for Volvo 240 with a manual shift. 😝
Is this a 5 speed automatic?
Yes. 5-speed auto. I backed out of it just before it shifted to 5th. Was quickly running out of road. This car is currently for sale on Craig's list.

Pretty fast car. Is the maintenance and gas expensive on this car

How do you put it on sport mode ?
Anthony Argueta Push the shifter over into the manual mode but don’t shift it and it’ll be in sport mode
wait.. it doesn't just stay in first when you do that?
Lol, you're not serious right? (krem(
does ur car have edc?
У меня дизель так прёт сейчас и расход смешной.И мотора почти не слышно.

Stig Shift that light is for the dynamic stability control. It's on because I manually turned the feature off.
Cool, thanks.
can you tell mr how to turn it on or off, or is it just a button?
It’s just a button
Any ideas what the squeak is at 0:29 ?
My tires made that noise when I ride the painted center line at high speeds
منو يشاهد ب 2023😂
What is that sound during high speed?
That sound was from me riding the center line.
Nope. No EDC.
stick or auto
It's an automatic. This year m-sport had the 5-speed steptronic with higher speed stall converter and lower rear gears. (3.15:1)
Common sense wtf
OLD THREAD, YEP, I KNOW...I love it when a BMW pulls up next to my 650 HP C6 Corvette and THINKS they have a fast car, LMAO!!

D Lindsay you should teach how to be gay 101 your pretty good at it
You got 139 1/2 mph. Do it again...
I traded the car 6 years ago. I’ll have to do it in my Volvo. Lol.
