My Bucket Shot: Attempting to snap the milky way above Britains only cast iron wave swept lighthouse

  • I attempt to try and capture one of my bucket list shots, the milky way above Whiteford lighthouse.
The 44ft lighthouse is situated on the northern tip of the Gower Peninsula out in the Loughor Estuary and is the only remaining cast iron, wave swept lighthouse left in the UK.
The problem is that the lighthouse is located out in the Bristol channel, which has the worlds second highest tidal range, and is only accessible around low tide after a three mile one-way walk.
I hoped all the conditions would align and I would finally be able to capture my bucket list shot...

Love this Chris. I've been trying to capture this shot for a couple of years but our lovely Welsh weather has defeated me ! Hope your next trip gets you the Milky Way image you're after.

Thanks Tim. The lighthouse is an elusive character, good luck in your quest to capture it.

I grew up in Treherbert and the area between there and Rhigos is an amazing place for darkness and the night sky.

Great shots there Chris and looked like a lovely evening despite your risky moments. Only discovered the whiteford sands walks a couple of years ago but haven't been forunate enough to time it with low tides to get to the lighthouse.

Thanks Rob. It's a cracking walk but even better when you do get access to the base of the lighthouse.

Thanks Anna, Its a beautiful walk and well worth making time for. I'd recommend calling by at the Britannia Inn for food or a drink after. Once the adrenaline wore off i was baltic!

Wow, that was a risky business Chris! Good shots nonetheless. You might try correcting the leaning lighthouse in post and see what that looks like vis-a-vis the orientation of the Milky Way. Brave stuff that is definitely not on my list!

Beautiful scenery and great photos...the top of the lighthouse looks like a Victorian birdcage, quite stunning. Love the wild horses, beautiful animals. Thanks for upload, a great watch 🐎🛟

An amazing video and some really amazing images! So worth the effort you put in!
Btw if these images are North facing I reckon that green tinge at the bottom may be aurora related ... we had quite a lot of activity around September/October last year ... super capture none the less!
