Top 3 Mountain Weather Apps & Websites Every UK Hiker Should Use

In this video I talk about what I believe to be the Top 3 Weather Apps & websites for checking the mountain forecast in the UK. One of the biggest mistakes beginner hikers make is not checking the weather forest properly or even worse, not checking it at all. Unfortunately popping your head out of the window, glancing at a widget, or looking at the forecast for a broad region won’t cut it. When...

      More awareness = more enjoyment of wild spaces = more investment in bothies / conservation / path building / beach cleaning etc and brings in money to local areas. Get outa here with your local village for local people misery. The only sort of people that travel to such remote bothies are wholesome outdoorsy people. Once, in the kingdom of Luminaria, there lived Chris, a humble knight known as “Oh, What a Knight” for his uncanny ability to turn calamity into triumph. One evening, while riding through the woods, he stumbled upon a weeping willow. Beneath its drooping branches sat a child clutching a broken lute. “What ails you?” Chris asked. “The strings are snapped, and my music is gone,” the child replied. Chris thought for a moment, then plucked the strings of his own heart. Through laughter, kindness, and a bit of song, he taught the child that the music was never in the lute, but within them all along. From that day, the child became a bard who sang not of riches or power, but of the knight who found melodies in silence.

    I recently took 2 families on the Ingleborough trail (from Clapham > Cave > Trow Gill > Gaping Gill > Summit and back). I got a Garmin Enduro 3 as a Christmas present, had the basic OS Maps App subscription but didn't really know how to use any. On the way back, I wasn't sure which way to go as it was getting darker, signal kept fluctuating and ended up following an experienced hiker heading down to Horton In Ribblesdale (4.4m off course from where the cars were parked)... Then had a tough time finding a ride back to Clapham on a winter evening ... Back home in London, I am now searching for simple videos to plan routes, use offline and synch up to watches etc., This video was the simplest and most contextual I could find. Thanks a lot!

    The sock trick 😂 great stuff! I’m a big guy with blessed leg muscles (shame the rest of me doesn’t match) so struggled to find decent walking trousers that go over my thighs, RAB tights have sorted me right out, just wear a pair of comfortable shorts over the top… I love your waterproof coat, I have a gortex coat that I bought just before I saw some videos talking about gor isn’t what it used to be and other materials are now just as good, if not better… and merino wool all the way, bought some merino socks this spring which are game changers!

      I've also struggled with finding trousers to fit my disproportionate legs (I have got small waist, large thighs, tiny calves). The Montane tenacity pants fit really well and are super stretchy, i would highly recommend them. With Goretex Jackets you are paying a premium for the name, which isn't all what its hyped up to be. The Columbia jackets has its own in house technology which has done a good job so far.

    I was thinking chris, could you do a video next year showing how you prepare for day climbs of one or more peaks and what you wear, rucksack size, what you take and how you prepare prior to the climb? A video this week on another channel showed a guy injured on his own after climbing crib Goch for the first time and was wearing jeans and trainers and his phone had died but was luckily found by other climbers who called mountain rescue. I carry a stratos 24 at 8kg with everything in it much to the amusement of other climbers but you never know. I did scafell pike a few years ago fully kitted up with people going up in t shirts and it was 7 degrees at the bottom. Minus 13 degrees wind chill at the top, a 20 degree change. When I got back down, a couple asked me how to get out of the car park to start the climb, totally unprepared it's scary. I think it would be a great video for newbies and to prepare them for what they're about to do. I also use mountain forecast (from advice from another of your videos in the past) to know the conditions days before I climb and I've only done a few Thanks chris. 👍

    • @ohwhataknight
      @ohwhataknight 17 дней назад

      A great idea, i will add it to the list of videos to make in 2025! Its one of the issues with the rise in popularity of hiking, people are often vasty under prepared and unaware of what conditions are like in winter. Which is worrying and scary. If i see someone who i clearly under prepared, whos heading up a mountain in winter I will often politely voice my concerns. Good to hear you are carrying all the right kit. I always say, its better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Experienced hikers will never judge you for carrying too much kit, especially in the colder months of the year.

    Chris, do you change what boots you wear depending on weather/terrain? Like what do you wear for lake district vs what you wear for winter hikes?

    • @ohwhataknight
      @ohwhataknight 17 дней назад

      Hey Mike, I do! I plan on doing a video on that soon. Generally I wear trail runners (Columbia Montrail Trinity AGii) in the warmer months of the year or when i think the weather and ground is going to be dry. I will wear waterproof mid cut shoes (Adidas Freehiker 2 GTX) when the weather gets wetter and colder and the ground is much more saturated. Then I have a pair of cold weather waterproof boots for snowy conditions in Winter (Columbia Facet 75 Equinox). All three are on the hiking gear page of my website: ohwhataknight.co.uk/my-hiking-gear
