Give the people what they want: the Battle of the Canards. A dogfight free-for-all featuring (at a minimum) the SU33 Flanker-D, Eurofighter Typhoon, JAS39 Gripen, and Dassault Rafale. May the best 'nard win.
In the final round, the Flanker's missile missed because the Hornet pulled the throttle and turned nose on (the coldest aspect), making the flares the hottest target in sight. In every round, the Flanker stayed in burner, even with a missile incoming, providing a nice hot target for the missile.
Cool story anyway modern IR missiles are based on imaging sensors precisely so that it isn't that simple. Against a modern missile it's more about the flares disrupting the plane's shape and apparent bearing change, messing with the gain/contrast, or fortunately forming a plane-shaped blob. As for how it's simulated in DCS, it's anyone's guess but as far as testing can tell it's just a die roll with a couple linear adjustments tacked on. So, pareidolia.
@@HypoceeYT Based on my experience, IR missiles in DCS don't track an idle engine as well as an engine in burner, and they don't track as well nose on. Yes DCS uses random number generation to decide hit or miss, but the hit probability goes down with the the engine heat.
Never realized how crazy maneuvers at low speeds are for the hornet untill I saw first hand last weekend at an airshow an f-18 just ripping it up like an f22 was insane.
They have some incredible pitch authority, but they love to dump energy in the process and aren’t terribly good at getting it back. The F-16 gets it back almost instantly, and the F-22 is pretty much the best of both worlds.
Fun fact: Years ago the sidewinder's countermeasure resistance wasn't as good as the engineers thought it was. They designed it with a very narrow range of flare intensity. But Soviet / Russian build quality is so poor that the flares weren't consistent enough for the missiles to filter them out as flares.
It wasnt a poor quality, it was just an old tech. Actually it worked much better than its western counterpart. It is much easier to filter out flares that are all the same than those that each have their own characteristics.
Because its high alpha capability and low speed maneuverability Hornet is actually lot stronger in modern HOBS dogfight than dogfight of its design time. Again F-16 isn't as strong in modern HOBS dogfight than two circle gun fight/rear aspect Fox-2 dogfight of its design time.

New series idea: loaded down multirole jumped by different types of interceptors. Can multirole fighters defend close quarters while retaining loadout and continue mission. Interceptors with full or typical load of AA missiles.
The WES is a Wesley. He's a little guy they use in all the missiles. He's a little long sighted so if you're too close he can't see you and that's how you jam the WES. Because he won't be able to turn fast enough if he takes too long to see you.
In regards to your history lesson about the J-15, China was only allowed a total of 200 licensed Su-27 copies, which would be the J-11A. The J-11B and J-15 were very much breaches of their deal with Russia. Which in hindsight they should not have ruined, as China has struggled domestically in terms of engines and avionics, and many of their early production of J-11Bs and J-15s had unreliable airframes and engines because their agreement with Russia, didn't come with the engine package. The only advantage J-15 has over Su-33 is its catapult capability. Unlike Su-33, you can hook the J-15 up to a catapult and not worry about wrecking its landing gear. But unless China has completely fixed their airframe and engine problem, dogfights like this in the J-15 would be a matter of "how quick can you bend over and take a 9X up your ass?"
Maybe drop the restriction on firing before the merge and give each player a Fox-1 or two to force a "dirtier" merge (i.e, not necessarily a super-close pass and where neither party necessarily is in an optimal position and attitude)? It would make the approach more interesting and potentially make 2-circle capabilities more relevant in HOBS fights. Basically, try simulating the tail end of a BVR fight and the transition into a dogfight instead of simulating an exercise dogfight that's not likely to happen in real combat.
