I could hear the Mig-29 crying as it fell to the Earth in the last two rounds. The F-35A can pull 9G turns like the Viper which makes it absolutely insane in a dogfight. It even has its own version of the AIM-9X that can be fired backwards. I want to see the Fulcrum Vs. the F-35 in a BVR fight next. The F-35 also has nickname that sounds better than Fat Amy. Panther.
to be fair, this appears to have been less of a fight of the Mig-29 vs the F-35 but more of a fight between the 9x and the archer. The reliability of your archers was a catastrophe, my god. OTOH, his 9x just went "oh did I just go by? Boom" and still blew your tails off xDD
One thing to note for the f35, is it’s reported ability to lock onto other aircraft, independent of its nose position. If true, the f35 could achieve a lock and fire before the opposing aircraft can turn into the f35, jam the WEZ or point its nose at the F35 to achieve its own lock.
not only that, it has capability to feed both modernized 9X and 120D data throughout theyr flight, as long as radar can see the target that missile should be looping around for another go even after miss
The F-35's thermal cameras can feed data to the AIM-9X prior to launch. Basically it has sensors for heat seeking missiles independent of the missile for it to use in any aspect of the fight
I'm a HUGE fan of the F-14 but I have to admit, in a HOBS fight the F-14 would get smoked. The lack of a HMS and archaic AIM-9's is just a death sentence. Guns only is a different story though.
I'm old enough to remember when the MiG-29 was still the sexiest thing the Soviets had in the air. Used to play "MiG-29 Fulcrum" on my Amiga in 1990 - loved the plane - rubbish simulator - nothing could beat the 1988 "F/A 18 Interceptor" simulator - revolutionary for its day (anyone old enough will remember the exhilaration of flying under the Golden Gate Bridge). DCS's great-great-grand-pappy!
I'm old enough to remember when magazines had photos of the "new Soviet superfighters" and it was the Mig-29 and the Mig-31 (yeah, not a fighter, go sue those magazines). The Su-27 wasn't even mentioned! I fell in love with the Mig-29 back then, and the Su-27 later, and to this day they look like the sexiest fighters to me. I confess I cannot adapt to the looks of the later generations, F-22, F-35, Su-57... I get they are better aircraft, but their looks do nothing for me. On the Western side, I'm still an F-14/15/18 fan.
@@theandf Agreed, the Soviet/Russian MiGs and especially Flankers have a fantastic menacing muscular elegance that I don't think any of the Western fighters could rival. That said, I'm a sucker for the Hornet (pre-super days). The lines of the current flying triangular bricks leave me cold.
it's got a really neat external model but this is the one with the F-15C cockpit iirc; it also doesn't contain pretty much any of the systems that make the F-35 so formidable.
@GrowlingSidewinder I'm assuming the only way to really fly it in DCS will be using a VR headset that simulates the Augmented reality overlays while looking through the visor? That 30x40 degree "window" in the center of the visor display that is your "HUD" enables you to look "through" the airplane, while maintaing normal peripheral vision outside of it will be tough to simulate otherwise.
At 13:33 it seems like the AA-11 Archer was tracking the F-35 until it decided to track the AIM-9X. It could be just tracking the flares, but the way it turned with the AIM-9X was weird to me.
I think it is also fair to point out that the F-35 is capable of 360 degree target locking. basically in a dogfight if the 35 pilot can see you, so can their missiles.

I don’t know if it is a characteristic of the 9X to proxifuse while the Archer doesn’t? But I feel like you might have a bit of a reason to feel slightly robbed as your missile when just as close as his did but you didn’t get the proxifuse detonation. Otherwise I am surprised at how well the F35 did in the 1 circle and 2 circle fights considering all the talk of how it isn’t a dogfighter
We need a real "face off"....a modernized MiG-29 vs. a Su-27. Same design philosophy but a premium fighter vs. a dedicated dogfighter. Kind of like an F-15C against an F-16.
MiG-29 definetly one of my favourites in DCS, especially for dogfights. Once you learn to utilise dif. thrust and the g-limiter override, you can put the gravity on standby mode and become a UFO for a minute. Tho i have to say, shit gets real when you waste your fox-2's and are in a gunfight with a viper
Watching that first-round missile make the last-meter turn into your engines in slow motion was pretty cool. And then in round 3, I couldn't see his 9X at all, either first-run or in the replay. I'm still fairly impressed at a comparatively-elderly plane like the MiG-29 killing the F-35 twice in six rounds.

These modern Fox-2 fights maybe aren't as good for videos because they are over so quickly, but I do appreciate that you include them occasionally because the high tension, one mistake and your done action is quite enjoyable!

something i never see talked about in regards to the F35 is the 4-element compound LERX that comprises the intake (thats the primary reason why the intake has that sharp point on it), it makes what looks like a fat and cumbersome plane into an absolute rate monster that can easily match the likes of the F16, that's why it was able to just absolutely RIP around the two-circle on the deck there

Interesting engagement. One question regarding round one. What is the blast radius for the AIM-9X's anular fragmentation warhead? With about 4kg of explosives was the F-35 at risk of flying into the fragmentation cloud from its own missile?

It's just turning your head. The nose doesn't need to be on your opponent. It still helps though.
apparently this isnt installed on F35s yet. Its coming in a future upgrade. Maybe thats why we didnt see it in this video?

Have you ever considered doing 2 vs 2 dogfights using same (2 F-16s vs 2 Mig 29s) or dissimilar (F-15E/F-16 vs SU 27/Mig 29) aircraft?
