Get rid of year 69 "22, America in terminal stasis The air's so thick, it's like drowning in molasses I'm sick and tired of paying these dues And I'm finally getting hip to the American ruse" These lyrics are more relevant today than ever before and then afterwards
That's not 100 Club. It's CKLW-TV Channel 9 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The show was called Swingin' Time. The voice you hear introducing show host Robin Seymour at the end of the song is that of David Compton, who many locals remember as the channels news anchor throughout the '70s.
AWESOME.... I've loved these guys just as soon as they had an album and their last album was the best I thought. - they were so ahead of their times. -
Not yet at least. I have a feeling we're going to be seeing this spirit come back in a huge way (in music) here pretty soon. Especially with all the shit going down right now in 2020. However I don't think it's going to sound anything like this.
The clarity of the "Oh no!" backing vocals when nobody else is mic'd up seems to indicate that it was partially mimed if not all. That's the way a lot of TV studio performances roll I reckon. Still I love seeing the MC5 live or faking it on mass media - it's good for the young 'uns to learn about speaking up for what you believe in.
it's too perfect to be entirely live. I just want to know when the original LP will be corrected, as there isn't nearly enough bass, as everyone now knows. aside from that, it's a great LP! they pay tribute starting off, w/ Little Richard, and end up w/ Chuck Berry. title track.
Pub laws never entered my mind ! Interesting and telling it's what you thought I meant by "pub-worthy." I meant, rather, who'd want to have a pint with you? Then or now.
Reminds me of that marquee at the Longhorn Ballroom in Texas in 1978, when the Sex Pistols were sharing space with Merle Haggard. Though pairing the MC5 with Anne Murray is admittedly a bit weirder.
The exchange between Jblacktree & Nickmart is hilarious, in a pathetic sort of way, & far sadder than The MC5 lyp-synching, Xyloplax. Are these people who leave comments 10-year-olds or just retarded? Anyway, Fred "Sonic" Smith didn't die of "drugs", but of cancer, although he had a severe alcohol "habit". The MC5 will always be one of the best R&R bands ever, because of their music, not because they died, did drugs, lived in dangerous times, were around in 1968, etc... Thanks for posting this
Who fucking cares about any shit that any one post' (includuding mine) Dig 'em if you're young. Dig 'em if you are old. Who cares? Just dig the MC5. A great band. They are like the Dr Who of Rock and Roll. Completly timless. Fantastic Stuff.

1. They wouldn't drink with you and 2. if you're the age you say you are then the band had long since broken up by the time you were pub-worthy. 3. To quote Iggy: "I lived in Berlin and visited East Berlin and neither was as scary or as bad a police state as an Ann Arbor in 1968." i know what the song is and i was stating that no place in america is the worst place to live (since the point of the comments they made was x place is the worst place to live). you seemed to have completely missed the point of my comment.
I said this before, I'll say it again. TELL me a band was better than the MC5, other than the Stones. And then tell me where you live. I'll fight to the death.
I imagine they believe what they professed, but they were young musicians who stayed in nice hotels and were happily played on little TV bandstands, not freedom fighters with muskets. Once I shared a drink in a UK pub with most of the band members. They were talking about how great the affluent and very white Detroit suburb Birmingham was when suddenly one of them remembered his obligation and said, "But it's so bourgeois." How very hard core.
@@aliceborealis Your opinion doesn't matter. It was during their 1972 trip to London when this video was probably made. I met them in Aylesbury, and there are two clips of the show on YT. I couldn't give a crap about celebrity, much less rock and roll musicians, my only point is that their politics was adolescent and superficial. In introduced myself while they were rehearsing, and explained I went to high school at Cranbrook, outside of Detroit. So, some of them invited me for a drink. Not very startling.
Okay, random rando on YT, your stirring account has convinced me that you MUST SURELY have had a drink with the MC5. And you weren't impressed- I bet THEY weren't either. And FYI, neither of our opinions matter. @@nicmart
@@aliceborealis Jesus, you gotta grow up some day. It doesn't matter to me in the slightest whether you think it happened or not. They were a minor rock n roll band, and that was an amusing day in my life. I have no investment at all in it.
they were so ahead of their time. True genius
Absolutely right!!
Sonic rocking that Rickenbacker for one of his rare solos! Kramer's Telecaster looked great too!
when the young ones ask me what is the ultimate rock band .. answer : MC5 !
The were it.
Even when miming, the MC5 has an exiting stage presence that sets them apart from most other groups.
MC5 were a perfect, Rock & Roll machine.

The air's so thick, it's like drowning in molasses

Anne Murray following the 5? How about she join them onstage and sing "Ramblin' Rose"?
That would have been amazing!
That's not 100 Club.

''If you complain they're gonna get vicious
Kick in the teeth and charge you with assault''
This is scary because the absurdness rings true!
Actually worse now! They track your cell and there were no tasers then
Never more relevant than right now.
AWESOME.... I've loved these guys just as soon as they had an album and their last album was the best I thought. - they were so ahead of their times. -
LOL @ Anne Murray following the MC5 after they tore it up.
Eric Rose She probably sang "Snowbird"
Eric Rose, my thoughts exactly, lol
No band has the balls like this anymore period
Not yet at least. I have a feeling we're going to be seeing this spirit come back in a huge way (in music) here pretty soon. Especially with all the shit going down right now in 2020. However I don't think it's going to sound anything like this.

Sure they do. But they can't get on TV anymore period.
…my band has the balls.
To lip sync?
No wonder the Ramones loved these guys so much.
"Nahhhhh. Knock 'em back, Sonic......". One of rock's great moments.
This is the new American anthem !!!!!! People have to hear this
Nice to see them on stage here, but I swear that's their miming to the track of that name on that great LP "Back in the USA"....I'm sure...agree??
I am leaning toward no, but a very faithful live cut...maybe

What did Fred Smith say at the end of the video putting his hand over his mouth ????!!! ?
Solos starts with “ Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory”… and gets raunchy immediately thereafter. BRILLIANT.
Pure punk genius !
Best group ever!!!!
Yea, I've been wondering about that too. I used to look at it a LOT, and suddenly it's nowhere to be found. Wayne Kramer was amazing on it!
I love the MC5 but I always wondered what they were talking about when he says, "Joe's primitive bar". Does anyone know?
+Scott Trevathan The non sequitur, and obscurities make it heavy.
I think Joe's Primitives was a line of kitschy Americana giftware boutiques. So it fits in with the phony stars, crummy cars and cheap guitars.
The local corner bar- joe the average guy
@@louclark3388 Yeah that's how I always interpreted that line.
I think punk evolution goes something like..
Rock and roll->Rock a billy->Surf music-> British Invasion->MC5's/Iggy pop->Ramones.
Insert Velvet Underground between British invasion and MC5/Iggy, then New York Dolls between MC5/Iggy and Ramones... and there ya go.
Wow! MC5 followed by Anne Murray....what a combo!
Brother Wayne Kramer and Rob Tyner kicking Up a Storm....
Welcome Back Sonic...……
Fucking Epic....
I wonder if she sang "Snowbird." What an introduction.
Go Sonic, GO!!

slint69: He and Fred, both -- like Thor and Odin together!
Najbolja garage rock grupa!
Istina.
The missing link in rock and roll, which is sad, they had everything right, the radio stations gave them no air play at all.
this was actually filmed at the cbc tv studio here in windsor ontario
the james brownes of rock n roll

the james brownes a pretTy good name for a band :):):)

Midwest American hardcore. First among equals.
Freakin Great!!!!!
Literally, nothing has changed. Just the ruse is a lot more blatant
That guitarist has the original punk stare! :)
Fred "Sonic" Smith - he married CBGB Punk priestess/poet Patti Smith a few years later. I'm glad to see him get a rare solo on this.
