His murderer who got away with his murder is clearly just another example of the injustice to my Native ancestors. Proud to be from the same tribe as Richard Oakes. Sicken by the actions of any other than Indian.
I remember when my uncle Leonard Oakes showed me this video hes now passed on he was on the island and remembered it and used to speak about it.... Rip Grandpa Rip Uncle Leonard
Hey thanks for posting this! I was born here in 1975 and had never heard this story. I've got a lot of thoughts about it and also what is going on in the world today but I'm not good with words and politics so I'll just vote my best. Hopefully we can do better across the board.
Not exactly what I was thinking of when I looked for Educational Videos, but an educational video. Not really "news" as far as the historical treatment of Native American's to anybody who's 14 or older, whose paid ANY kind of attention. Though I was unaware specifically of the native "seizure", "occupation", "repatriation", and abandonment of Alcatraz. I LOVED the "Bureau of Caucasian Affairs"! A both hilarious and slightly degrading method to get whites to look at it from the native P.O.V.

That was a brilliant Proclamation - Go Richard! Rest his soul. And the spirit lives on!
I'm sure Mr. Oakes' spirit appreciates this being brought out from the archives and shown to the world, thanks INT!

Richard Oakes is my cousin on my Fathers side of the family.
I was there.
shot to death. unbelievable. and unarmed.
Why does he speak like that in the beginning -- it's so dull -- he doesn't even quite sound like a newscaster --
fair enough
