- Welcome to Famous Grave Tours. Thanks for joining me as I visit the cemeteries, grave sites, memorials and final resting places of the famous (and sometimes infamous) people who have touched our lives. From movie stars to world leaders, from those whose died before their time, to those who lived to be centenarians--they may be gone, but they're not forgotten.
In this video tour, I visit and tour the grave of actor and comedian Lou Costello (one half of the comedy duo Abbott and Costello), oil magnate and billionaire Edward Lawrence Doheny, composer Jimmy McHugh, actors and brothers, Lionel Barrymore and John Barrymore, actress Irene Dunne, silent film star Mabel Normand and actor John Hodiak. They are all interred at the Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.

Abbott and Costello number 1 in my book!! Glad to hear his son is near him. I can only imagine how many times Lou visited him there.
out of all the graveyard hunters on RUclips,, yours will always be legendary in my opinion. your work is A-1 excellent.. thank you
wow, that's so nice of you to say, robert. i really appreciate that!
Love abbott and costello 💖 favourite movie of there's is Abbott and Costello meets Frankenstein.
That's a great one to watch. Especially on Halloween.
I like Abbot and Costello meets the were wolf 😊
Abbott and Costello are gone but they are still funny today. Love their skits.
RIP Abbot and Costello ❤❤
Lou costello's son is buried in the same room in the last row behind the the seats. Very sad as you can see born 1942 to 1943. So Lou Costello had been in that same room when he was alive .
Unfortunately, I didn't realize that until after I visited. Nice to know they are together, though. Thanks for the comments!
I was just about to ask about Lou's infant son!
I'm twenty six years old, and had the honor and privilege of growing up watching Abbott and Costello! I've loved their movies, their show, and them ever since I was a kid! It's so cool to finally see where Costello is buried, I hope I get to go there and visit his final resting place someday! Thank you for making this video, and God bless!
Are you a fan of Lou Costello? Very funny man. I wasn’t born at the time of his movies but fortunately when I was younger those older movies either played in the afternoons or later in the evenings. So I feel fortunate to have watched them. I also remember watching the cartoon version of Abbott and Costello....”Hey Abbott....”. Thanks, Steve.
Yes, I always thought they were funny. I'm like you, I watched them in reruns on tv in the 1960s when I was a kid.
HEEEYYYY ABBOTT!
I enjoy watching your videos Steve, you do them so well. I get to see where some of the people I remember as a child are laid to rest.
Thanks Brad. I’m glad you enjoy them and I appreciate you letting me know 😊👍
I love your videos! Always learn something new. Lou Costello is one of my favorites. One of saddest stories is when his son tragically drowned and he still when on to perform on a radio show. I wonder where is son is buried?
I just checked findagrave.com and his son is also interred at this mausoleum. I didn't know that or I would have visited his crypt, as well. I wonder why they're not in the same section? Thanks for the comment. I just learned something from you!
Thanks for posting your videos Steve as not only are they informative they also include some history of those who passed on thus keeping them from being forgotten.
At Calvary in a wall crypt:
Leno LaBianca 1925 -- 1969. Rest in Peace.
I love the skit of Who’s On First. I played it for my Son when he was about 6 and he loved it.
I've been a silent movie buff since my teens and took classes on silent films at the public library in Milwaukee when in Jr high. Thanks for including and remembering Mabel Normand. Movie pioneer. Great video!
Was nice to see John Hodiak's final resting place. He attended high school with my Grandfather in Hamtramck, Michigan.
I remember growing up and watching Abbott and Costello and Laurel and Hardy movies on Saturday afternoons with my siblings. Loved those matinees out of Chicago station WBBM. Thanks for bringing back those great memories. Love your videos.
thanks for sharing with us, candice!
Well I like your channel very much. Your voice is calm and respectful. You are professional at all times and clearly, you enjoy doing this as it shows. It also helps because we are similar ages. I was born in 1955 and grew up in the western suburbs of Adelaide in South Australia. The city of churches. All the very best Steve. Regards from Down Under..
Thanks Brian. Nice to know you are watching from Down Under!
Bud abbott and Lou Costello are among the funniest and most entertaining men in history. I have nearly all of their movies, and their entire Television show episodes on DVD. Lou and his wife died relatively young. I think it was possibly expedited by the untimely tragic accidental drowning of Lou Costello junior. May they and the passed members of both their families rest in peace. They are remembered.
Thank you SO MUCH! You did such a wonderful, tasteful, respectful tour. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Well done!
Thank you,, Michael E
thanks, michael. i appreciate you say that!
Hello 👋🏼. I stumbled across your page and love it! Was John Barrymore the old man in the wheelchair who was in Its A Wonderful Life? Thank you for the time and effort that you put into your videos. Love your voice too! ✌🏼
Hi Carol, that was Mr. Potter in the wheelchair. He was played by John's brother Lionel Barrymore, who is on the same wall in the mausoleum. I just watched the movie again last week and I'm working on a video with he will be in it. I should have it complete in a couple of weeks. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it!
Two legends thats all i can i say there always cheer me up with there funny movies, Also there movies always gets me into Halloween
I really enjoy the older cinema stars. I grew up watching their movies with my grand parents and parents.
Me too. Thanks for sharing, Janine!
I know this vlog is old, but…
From what I understand, they didn’t create “Who’s On First.” It’s an old vaudeville routine that a lot of performers did at the time.
They simply did it so well, and were the first to bring it to widespread national attention on radio…because how many people ever visited Vaudeville theaters in the first place?
IM 51 yrs OLD I AM GLAD I GREW UP WITH THESE MOVIES 🎥
John Hodiak was once married to Anne Baxter, "All About Eve," tv show "Hotel," she was also a relative of Frank Lloyd Wright.
The artwork is phenomenal! Love it. Thank You again Steve for this great video!
I lived 2 blocks away from Calvary Cemetery. Mostly everyday from high school I would always check the graves. I loved it. I remember & Loved Abbott & Costello❤️❤️
That is so neat. You got an early start exploring gravesites. Thanks for sharing that with us Estela 👍
I am 64 now and grew up in Los Angeles. My maternal grandparents and great grandparents are buried at Calvary
This was pretty good. I've been to most of the cemeteries here in Los Angeles but I've never been to Calvary Cemetery. I'll have to check this one out. Thank you.
Thanks, Michelle
The Who’s On First skit is hilarious
Still funny. A classic!
@@TheGraveyardChannel Abbott & Costello are in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
I just purchased the 28 movie box set and will watch them all again soon. Great family entertainment...
another great video. that place is beautiful. lou costello was so gifted and funny. i loved who's on first. have you seen the one where abbott makes change for a $20. classic.. thanks for the video.
According to the Ellis Island official passenger search, some people came from Italy and Spain to the U. S. as Costello.[original research?]
It occasionally has been adopted as a pseudonym or stage name by famous people of Italian descent, including Al Costello (né Giacomo Costa), Frank Costello (né Francesco Castiglia), and Lou Costello (né Louis Francis Cristillo). It is also an Italian verb form of costellare: to adorn with stars.
i didn't now that. so interesting. thanks for sharing that with us, P!
You mentioned Alfred Hitchcock, and I love all the movies he made, I thought you'd like to know that he died on April 29,1980 in Los Angeles, California and he was cremated and his ashes scattered at sea
Thanks, Nikki!
Q: Which row is Lou in?
A: Lou’s on first.
LOL, perfect!
I enjoyed the video. We have family buried there. Next time I visit, Im going to do a little exploring and see who I can see. Back in the day, I guess that was the cemetery the stars were buried at.
It sure was! And your family members are in very good company Linda!
Have you done any follow up videos of this Mausoleum? Keep up the great work.
Not yet. So many graves and so little time :-) Thanks!
Thanks for another great video Steve. Since I don't get to travel very much, these videos are about the only way I can get to see the final resting places of some of my favorite stars.
Steve You are A treasure ❤ 💖 ♥ 💙 💕 hope Y'all are well and Family 👪
I have a tee shirt with the who’s on first script. Makes me smile every time.
Thanks Graveyard Guy, always a great job.👍
Thanks, Bruce!
Very good video. Interesting how the crypts are in the church.
Always enjoy Abbot and Costello. Still entertaining today as when they first made movies.
Thanks Mark!
Always a fabulous job. Thanks Steve.
thanks, cathy!
impressive building!
your channel rocks i get different information and you cover a lot of information that other channels don't cover this is cemetery is not covered by many, good job. just a beautiful resting place, and you are correct on John Barrymore, is is buried in Philadelphia, i am from that area and is buried near a friend of mine.
Thanks for sharing that with us, Harolyn. Sounds like your friend is in a great location!
I remember Abbot and Costello and all the songs that you mentioned!
Small FYI when the Mausoleum Space is sideways it’s called a “Couch Crypt” I recently purchased two of them. Very well informed tour. Thank you
As usual good work. I always learn something new watching your videos.
nice to hear that, joy!
Nice video Steve. How long have you been doing this ?? Cheers from Down Under..
I started my channel two years ago, but the first year I didn't even have editing software and the videos were pretty bad. So really, for about a year now. Thanks for watching Brian, from one of my favorite places!
Great job! So many big names in this one!
Thanks. Did you recognize any of them or are you too young?
Famous Grave Tours I know about Costello and the Tea Pot Scandal. I recognize the album's you showed but didn't know the composer. I do know about all the Barrymores and some extended family along with their own scandals. I don't think I know about Dunn some of the other actors you mentioned. I know who Fatty Arbuckle is though. I'm sure that I have seen some of their work though.
Thanks for the feedback. I was just curious if people, from different generations than mine, knew or were still interested in any of the people I visit. I guess it makes sense that people who watch channels like ours are just more curious about people from the past and are more likely to know who they are or to be interested in finding out. Thanks!
Famous Grave Tours I'm completely interested in things like this and like you said in the video there is no better place to learn about history. There's a ton out there!
Love Abbot and Costello moves again when I need a laugh
Hi Steve, have enjoyed your videos and your travels, thank you for sharing the buruual sites and your knowledge with us. Will keep watching!

That was beautiful. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
East Los Angeles is my hometown, I lived about half mile down Whittier Blvd on Alma Street by Salazar Park, also my Sister, grandparents are buried at the same cemetery
Beautiful resting place
I watch abbot and Costello on RUclips everyday love them very funny
The song 'I'm in the mood for love" was immortalized by.......Alfalfa in the 1936 Our Gang short "Pinch Singer".
Thank you for sharing
Love your tours in the graveyards that’s interesting
thanks, camille!
Haaaaaaay Abbott ! God i love their movies !!
Keep 🆙 the good work
Thanks, appreciate it!
Rest In Peace Bud and Lou ♥️♥️
I was born in 1980 and my Grandfather and I (may he RIP, Died in 1997) watched the Abbott & Costello show in Reruns and some of their films which he owned on VHS, My favorite is The Naughty Nineties which was my first exposure to "Who's On First" One interesting thing I learned in later years is that they never did it the same way twice
My Dad and my Uncle are buried at this same cemetery.
Excellent video!! Thanks!!!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
john Barrymore Jr is Drew's estranged father
During long bus trip we stopped for break and I took an unknowing leak atop the teapot done spot
Love your podcast
thanks, AD!
5 stars my Good Friend!
I have love their movies since I was a kid. How ever thought of doing Different Strokes actors?
Lou Costello jr is laid to rest with his father
Hi Ray, thanks. I read, after my visit, that his son is nearby too. Thanks for watching.
Ray Johnson makes me cry.
Wow so many amazeing people there
And I only visited a few of them. Thanks for watching!
My mom always watch old movies..
I Visited Lou Costello Last Month
So he's not dead?
Billy K. Hes Is Dead i Visited His Grave I Mean
Great statue of Lou in Jersey. Even appeared in the Sopranos 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😅😅
I didn't realize Lou Costello was that young when he died. The only reason I know the name Doheny is because it's in the lyrics of "Surfin' USA."
Lou Costello grew up in Paterson New Jersey. Apparently there’s a monument to him in the city somewhere.🤔
Can you please locate my Great Uncle's Gravesit. He was an actor who played with Laurel & Hardy, The 3 Stooges and also Played Ming along with Buster Crabbe in the Flash Gordon Saturday Serials. His name is Charles Middleton...Thank You....Jack Yandell
I will definitely look for his grave at Hollywood Forever, the next time I'm there. Thanks for the suggestion, Jack!
Charles Middleton worked with more famous comedians.. Harold Lloyd, W.C. Fields, Marx Brothers and to the lesser known Wheeler and Woolsey , Olsen and Johnson and really obscure The Mad Russian
Wow !!!
In "Abbott & Costello meet The Invisible Man" Costello uses the name Louis Francis & is dubbed "Loui The Looper" as his boxing name.
Thanks for sharing that fun trivia with us jd 😊👍
@@TheGraveyardChannel Thank you for sharing these visits with the viewers!!!!!!! I'd also like to thank you for responding to viewer comments as much as you do. That's pretty rare!!!!!!! You have my respect, admiration & a new sub!!!!!!!
Thank you for sharing. I can't help being a romantic.
The world needs more romantics! Thanks, Alejandro!
I became friends of Lou Costellos Daughter who has kept her Dad and Bud Abbots Comedy Alive . Also after Lou Costellos Son Drowned he died soon after then his wife . Costello said Died of aBroken Heart ❤️
Abbott and Costello great actors
Bud Abbott had his Ashes scattered in the Pacific Ocean.
Who's on first, lol good job Steve miss these guys to funny ,,👍👁👁🙏
Wonder why the Barrymores don't have dates on their crypt faces....
What are those dark (bronze?) circular markers?
I think those are flower holders and I'm always curious why some graves have so little info.
Lou loved that boy
This place is fancier than a five star hotel.
You are very welcome
i like two see the big valley
A very sad note. Costello received word that his infant son Lou Jr. had accidentally drowned in the family pool a few days before his first birthday.
Irene Dunne Griffin is entombed here.Tony
I know those two actors died years before I was born in 1964 but I loved their skit with who’s one first what’s on second and I don’t know is on third and I don’t give a damn is the shortstop.
👍
Bud Abbott & Lou Costello were New Jersey natives. Bud was from Asbury Park and Lou was from Patterson.
John Barrymore was known for his profile. Bud Abbott's ashes were scattered at sea in the Pacific Ocean.
my grandparents are buried here so is RAMON NAVARRO SILENT FILM STAR, MABEL NORMAND CODY, BAYER ASPIRIN, POLA NEGRI SILENT FILM STAR
This is where my Mother is buried with her Mother and Father, she is downstairs from Lou Costello.😀💖
I thought Abbot's grave would also be on this video. Maybe he was cremated. I might of missed that. I skimmed back over it and I didn't hear that mentioned.
