  • FAMOUS GRAVE TOUR
Welcome to Famous Final Resting Places. Thanks for joining me as I find and visit the cemeteries, grave sites, memorials and final resting places of the famous (and sometimes infamous) people who have touched our lives. They may be gone, but they're not forgotten.
In this video walking tour, I travel to the Sunset Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary and find the graves of the following famous people:
Singer, actor and screen cowboy Roy Rogers
Singer, actor and screen cowgirl Dale Evans
Rodeo rider, cowgirl and movie stunt double Alice Van Springsteen
I also visit the graves of local pioneers, business leaders, notable grave sites and the Roy Rogers Dale Evans Sunset Chapel. This is the first cemetery I've visited with a horse stable and horses. It also has some of the funniest and most memorable epitaphs of just about any grave yard I've visited.

Our 13-year-old grandson is buried here. He passed away from brain cancer on Feb. 20, 2017. He is buried next to our grave plots in "'Garden of Valor" since his grandpa is retired military. We live close by and come to visit often. It is a quiet reflective place. Peaceful. By the way, they use a horse-drawn hearse for some funerals. That's why there are horses at Sunset Hills.

So sorry for your loss. It's especially sad at such a young age. Thank you for sharing his memory with us, Sandy! And thanks for letting us know about the horse-drawn hearse. That makes this cemetery even more special. It's a beautiful final resting place.

Hi Steve! That was very interesting for me watching from the U.K....was surprised to see Roy Rogers and Dale Evans real names on their grave stones...just had “assumed” the names we knew them by were their real ones! That cemetery certainly made the argument about using astroturf a no brainier there in the hot desert..100’ that day..real grass would just burn and as you say it saves water.
One name that brought back pleasurable memories I saw on the video front you showed, and that was actor George “Gabby” Hayes..that old whispered cantankerous old cowboy appeared in many cowboy films and I liked him. Just looked him up and had a surprise seeing his photo in the film “Randy rides alone 1934” where he’s clean shaven and not bad looking! Think it said he’s buried in Burbank California..but I’m not sure.
He was a memorable character for sure and would have made a good partner for granny in the Beverly Hillbillies don’t you think? Lol.
Thankyou for your hard work...no fun in that hot sun. I’m being treated currently for skin cancer but have never been a sun worshipper..so please make sure you use some skin protection, the higher factor the better...it’s just appeared on my nose now after forehead and cheeks, so please take care. Thankyou again! Love and hugs Helen 🙋‍♀️😘💕😻☕️☕️👏🏻👏🏻

Rogers met Dale Evans in 1944 when they were cast in a film together. They fell in love soon after Grace's death, and Rogers proposed to Dale during a rodeo at Chicago Stadium. They married on New Year's Eve in 1947 at the Flying L Ranch in Davis, Oklahoma, where they had filmed Home in Oklahoma a few months earlier. Thanks for showing the cemetery on your channel, it's been 8 years since I was there and while I was there, my camera battery was dead and didn't get any pictures, so this video was an added treat of memories. Thanks a bunch!

I think the 33 on Roy's tomb means he was a level 33 Mason. Dale had what looked like a book which would make sense since she was also a published author. Very nice video, thanks for doing it. I went to the museum when it was still there. I was glad I did because it later went to Branson and then closed.

But I wanted to let you know that both of those horses passed away. there is no longer a corral there and it's back behind the building. They got a new horse and we call it Oreo because it's black and white. Well yea have a nice day.

They only apples that were there were left on the roads by horses.

Steve, a very great video. Yes a child of the 60's as well growing up with Roy Rogers, Sky King et al as they were heros of many children of that era.
As note to some of your comments about the aircraft in the background, the old Apple Valley airport was across the highway from the Apple Valley Inn, a place that Roy Rogers had quite a bit to do with building. Some portions of the old runway East/West are still there, though deteriorated and crumbling.
Thanks again for your great videos. Keep them coming.

Part of why I visit graves is to get to know more about who some of the people in the cemeteries were and to share their stories here with others who are interested. Among all those Cowboys and Cowgirls buried at Sunset Hills there are two amazing people, they are Native American...Apache to be exact, they are my Brother, Jess Walking Horse Palomino who was a Storyteller and Pow Wow Dancer and a veteran of the US Navy.
He also knew Roy and Dale and did storytelling at their museum in Apple Valley.
The second is Victoria Morningstar Palomino his daughter and my niece, she was a nurse and an amazing, beautiful woman taken too soon.

I watched this, then we left to do errands, and "Merry Christmas Darling " came on just as we backed out of our driveway! Karen was saying hello to both you and I!! I loved "Here come the Brides". It's funny that my oldest child, who was born in MA, now lives in the NW. Beautiful Country.

More fun trivia. The first Trigger was ridden by Olivia De Haviland in the Errol Flynn movie Robin Hood in 1939. It was shortly after that where Roy Rogers bought him for 2500 dollars...and had to make payments on him! :) The smartest horse in the movies!

I heard that Roy Rogers once said that, when he went, he wanted to go to taxidermy, and be placed on the stuffed Trigger at the museum. Obviously, Dale or someone else talked him out of that idea. What I aalways found odd about the Roy Rogers TV show was, he rode around on a horse, while his sidekick Pat Brady drove a jeep, "Nellybelle". Yet Roy usually got to the scene of the action first. My favorite supporting actor in the RR films was Gabby Hayes. "Yer darned tootin!"

I was able to visit Roy Rogers final resting place in Apple Valley yesterday! Since GPS was spotty at time, used your video and quickly found there head markers! Nice cemetery especially with the mountains in the background! I also found an interesting grave opposite of Rogers grave! Max K. Hurlbut! He was a lieutenant colonel of Special Forces in Australia! He was also a member of Los Angeles Police Department and Marshall of Tombstone! His wife was a Chinese Dancer and a teacher! Very Interesting lol! Thanks again!

Very interesting cemetery. I would like to visit here someday. Yes, I am one of those people that have head ‘Happy Trails.” I also did notice when I was in California, there seemed to be a road or two named after Roy Rogers and after Dale Evans. I also stopped at a Roy Rogers restaurant along the way but I couldn’t find any info relating back to if it was actually named for the singer. I enjoyed the video and yes I enjoy your channel.

Hi Kevin, I think I read that the restaurant licensed his name to use because of his popularity. I did photograph the Dale Evans street sign on my way to the cemetery, but Roy's street sign is further away. I tried to find it, but ran out of time that day. There are big Roy Rogers signs on the freeway, but it's too dangers to stop for a pic. Thanks for watching and Happy Trails!

Thank you for your great videos. My wife and I were at Roy and Dales grave in May 2019 . I told my wife if we ever get to California , I need to visit there graves. Well, I finally made it . It was the highlight of our road trip from Michigan. If we ever get back there again, I will re-visit for sure.
You did a wonderful job talking about this cemetery. Thank You !!

I loved watching Roy and Dale. The first show I remember watching as a little kid was "Sky King" with Penny who was always getting into some kind of trouble. We didn't have much money when I was a little kid but from watching Sky King I really wanted Oreo cookies, the sponsor of Sky King. I begged my mom to buy them and my brother, sister, and I were immediately hooked on Oreo cookies. That was the one treat my mom would spurge on for us kids! Thanks for your videos. Are you going to do one on Doris Day? Another Cincinnati native who made it big. BTW I'm an Cincinnati native transplanted to Delaware. It's fun to see the graves of hometown natives.

I love doris day, but she said she didn't want to be buried, or to have a memorial, so i'm guessing she might just be cremated and scattered. it will probably be a while before we know. love the oreos story. thanks for sharing with us, Barbara!
