Exhilarating DC-10 Firefighter Plane Pulls Off Incredible Maneuver In Silverado Canyon 9/12/2014

  • When on a hike to view the carnage a wildfire was taking on my hometown, I caught a fantastic clip of DC-10- dropping fire retardant in a treacherous ridge about to be enveloped in flames. Nobody wanted to come with me because of the steep trail and the inherent dangers of being close to a forest fire, so I was just up there alone. A very unique experience.
    On the way up the steep trail, I watched many other planes pass over the burning ridge and drop retardant and water, and I was just hoping I was going to be able to see the DC-10 make it's final pass of the day. It circled three times behind a smaller plane and dropped the retardant on the fourth.

      As a Kiwi it’s imprinted on my brain that that the DC10 GPWS goes “whoop - whoop - pull up”. Ask any Kiwi over the age of 50 and they’ll tell you the same.
      We were all traumatised by the crash of an Air New Zealand DC10, which flew straight into Mount Erebus in Antarctica in broad daylight, without any of the five people in the cockpit ever seeing it. The last sounds on the CVR were “whoop, whoop, pull up... whoop, whoop, pull up... whoop, whoo-“

      DrKate L.
      Yeah, the senior staff at AirNZ tried to blame the pilots. The Civil Aviation Authority were in their pocket and the government were worried about the unlimited compensation they could be sued for (as sole shareholders of ANZ) if the airline was found to be negligent. The report caused an uproar and the government got pushed into appointing a commission of inquiry. They tried to pull the wool over the eyes of the judge who was running it but he saw right through it and produced a damning (to the airline) report.
      “Verdict on Erebus” was the book the judge wrote at the end of the whole debacle, and “Impact Erebus” was written by Gordon Vette, a friend and fellow pilot of the Captain on the fatal flight and who first drew public attention to the injustice of the original report.
      If you’ve got the attention span to follow a complex story they are both well worth reading. As I remember, Peter Mahon, the judge, writes fine, concise and clear, expository prose.

    To answer many questions that are similar..., No, he did not miss his target. The procedure is to drop a defensive barricade of retardant where they don't want the fire crossing. Considering where the wind was blowing from, the ridge was the natural place to drop the retardant as the fire has a harder time burning over the ridge and down the other side, making it a very effective barricade. Note*, fires burn uphill much faster and hotter. They burn downhill slowly unless carried by strong winds.

People were smashing into the ceiling and the plane was flexing so much I thought we were going to die. The company behind this DC-10 tanker is called 10 Tanker Air Carrier based on Albuquerque, NM. They now have 3 of these converted DC-10's operational and, pending more fire-fighting funding for contracts from the Forrest Service/Congress, the goal is to have 8 operational by 2017. The idea is during fire season to have 6 of them per-positioned at forward bases with 2 as rovers to join ranks with the others as required. Using this tactic they can knock down fires sooner/quicker. Another positive sidebar is these birds go down to Australia during their summer fire season (our winter).

    Forest fire with consequent thermal updrafts? Terrain-hugging flight profile? High ridge-line? Taking a jet-liner that was designed for high-altitude flight down to spittin' distance from the ground? Doing a pull-up with cargo doors wide open?

    Three times sixty thousand pounds of thrust = 180,000 pounds of thrust in the pilot's hand with a light load to empty in delivery, old style controls the pilot's control stick has stainless steel cables to the hydraulic servos in the tail and wing so the pilot's controls cannot be interrupted (later aircraft are electric like a game control).

    • @msmeyersmd8
      @msmeyersmd8 4 года назад +1

      I believe the cables to the hydraulic servos do not go to the tail. Hence the problem from the Fan disc disintegration of the tail engine #2 severing all 3 hydraulic system lines. Disabling control of all of the aircraft flight control surfaces. I am not certain of where the servos are located. Irregardless, all 3 hydraulic systems failed completely because of damage from the engine disintegrating. United Airlines Flight 232. Made a miracle crash landing in Sioux City, Iowa. Many lives saved due to the 2 pilots, Al Haynes and Bill Records and a DC-10 Check Airman pilot named Dennis Fitch who happened to be a passenger on board. He volunteered his help and assisted tremendously by controlling the plane by managing only the throttles. Engine control was not hydraulically connected.
      185 passengers survived due to the heroism of these 3 DC-10 pilots. Unfortunately 111 passengers died. These brave pilots saved many lives from a situation that had an astronomically high probability of 100% fatalities.

    • @PAPOOSELAKESURFER
      @PAPOOSELAKESURFER 4 года назад +2

      @@msmeyersmd8 Additional cable to the tail deploys a beam with a small propeller turning a hydraulic pump in case all three engines are lost the DC-10 can be flown as a glider. This system failed lacking a check valve that fixed the above problem preventing total hydraulic fluid loss. The backup beam propeller pump was omitted on the MD-11 computerized update having never been needed in commercial service. The hydraulic systems were tested in production at Long Beach, CA at 12,000 psi and heated to flush clean and safety prove.
