By group size alone, that Hornady Custom load shot lights out. I've always had really consistent terminal performance on game from the XTP as well. The 4.25 inch .44 is a good all-around choice for the woods and the hoods, if you have a good holster. Watch a video of a 2021 Anaconda with an unported, solid 4.25" barrel and the new Kodiak. You will see the difference and reduction in flip up and recoil. Yes, in a perfect world a side by side of the two guns would have been neat, but most people don't have $3,000 laying around to buy two revolvers just to show the difference on a video.
@@smithn.wesson495From the looks of it, my magna ported 629-2e recoils less at 3in the pistol in this video. This pistol looks like it flips up twice as much.

Great video thank for reviewing this firearm. However I do have a question unrelated to the video. What kind of glasses are you wearing, and do the lenses make everything real dark?
I'm afraid for my back to take it, I would need to do something about those tiny ports. They can be enlarged and increased to really soften all that recoil. It really has a minor effect on velocity, and muzzle flip is eliminated.
You seem to be experiencing the same shooting high issue I had with a new 6” anaconda, with the rear sight all the way down it was shooting 8 inches high at 25 yards. You can find oversize sight blanks online, which is what I did and I’m in the process of shaping me a new front sight that is much taller than the .180 inch sight that comes standard on the revolver. I did not want to send the revolver back because the groups are incredible, five shot three-quarter inch groups seem to be the norm for that gun, they were just insanely high.
Man . Your group with the Hornady customer was great. Would you choose that ammo. For your home defense chose? And do you feel that the Kodiak musel brake really helps? Thanks for the review. Side note: I have a Ruger Alaskan 2-1/2" Barrel. 44 mag. It's really nice with similar hot loads.
You made my lip quiver when you said 2-1/2" barrel! I have had great results with Hornady defense loads in most calibers. To really compare them closely I'd want to rest the gun, but I agree - that group was really good. I'd have no problem keeping it loaded with those rounds! Thanks for the comment. And oh yeah - I do think the ported barrel does help. I have a S&W 44 mag with compensator, and need to do a comparison.
@@theshuzyou should carry both. Look up "Efficacy of Bear Deterrent Spray in Alaska". It's an interesting study and an interesting read. Because terrain differs on the move and weather conditions can change quickly. missteps and stumbles can have unexpected results. this is why it’s prudent to have some experience of discharging a firearm while lying on your back because natural predators won’t be giving you time to get back on your feet!
I got my Anaconda back in 1994, just a suggestion, when shooting with 2 hands and single action, try hammering back with your 'off-hand' this way you are not repositioning your grip every time you hammer back. I was taught this by a Camp Perry Champion back when I first got it, he was right, my accuracy improved.
Absolutely right. I have been shooting for over 50 years. The grip for a semi is totally different from a wheel gun. For the revolvers, I always wrap my left thumb behind the hammer and use it to cock the hammer. My grip never changes. As I am getting older, my grip is not what it used to be, but it still works. The 44 is my favorite gun --- I have 5 S&W's in the 44 (the latest is a Model 69 --- five shooter and lighter --- it is not as much fun to shoot as my other 29's and 629's). My only Colt wheel gun is an older Python (was my dad's --- he got it from a Hells Angel that he hired to do 'guard duty' for him in the 70's in Pasadena Ca). It is very nice and the trigger is great --- but so are the Smiths. There is absolutely no sound quite as nice as a revolver as it is being cocked single action (well, maybe a pump shotgun).....
Recently purchased a (brand new) Colt Anaconda …light primer strikes and trigger reset have been major issues (44 special and 44 mag) …it’s going back to the factory still waiting 2 days after contacting Colt for the RMA 😒
My next 44 will be a 6 1/2 inch as shown in testing to get the maximum velocity with 44 magnums you do need 6 1/2 inches .. so says testing on whoever wrote the article in guns and ammo a few years back.. thanks nice gun for sure 👍
Massed Ayoob had a video on that. If you tilt a Colt backwards (so it rotates clockwise) in your right hand, the cylinder release will end up right under your thumb, ready for you to push down and while your left hand comes around a pops the cylinder out, at which point the cases start to immediately fall. So many people try to pull on the release while keeping the gun in the same horizontal position you would a Smith. It’s really pretty smooth when you get the hang of it. Colt > tilt>pull down>pop. Smith > push forward>pop>tilt.
I couldn't help but to notice that your hands were shaking a little. I guess just from holding up the weight of the gun. I'd like to see how it performs in a vice.

Recently purchased a (brand new) Colt Anaconda …light primer strikes and trigger reset have been major issues (44 special and 44 mag) …it’s going back to the factory still waiting 2 days after contacting Colt for the RMA 😒
The muzzle crown looks like it has a shrouded barrel like the S&W 69.
Crappy lighting this time of year ? In Seattle… what’s light look like ?
Thanks for the review
If you want power the S&W 500 mag has about all you can handle. But Colt is cashing in on Ricks Colt in the walking dead.
Truly amazing thank you 🙌🏾👏🏾💯💯🎯🎯
Très belle Arme super présentation merci
If it comes with a classy wood handle I’m interested
My next 44 will be a 6 1/2 inch as shown in testing to get the maximum velocity with 44 magnums you do need 6 1/2 inches .. so says testing on whoever wrote the article in guns and ammo a few years back.. thanks nice gun for sure 👍
That’s a beauty, someday!
Have you ever compared the Kodiac with a 4.25 Anaconda to see if the porting actually makes any difference?
Great video. Thanks
I just ordered mine today
I got the snakes, I didn’t even know there was bears!
Good review. But what is the distance to the target ?
I wonder how much of it is MIM?
Good looking wheel gun!
Awesome presentation brother I'm subscribing!!
Thanks! I do my best to make content that I'd watch. It's a constant journey! 🙂
They need to make this in 454 Casull for people that live in Alaska.
Might be possible with a 5-shot cylinder. Ask Jack Huntington.
Idk if colts are strong enough for 454,but I'd want one too if they make it.
A Colt 454 or 480 Ruger would be like my Colt Python and Ruger Alaskan 454 had a love child 😂
Count me in I would buy that!
I wish colt would release a revolver without a backwards pull tab cylinder release, makes their revolvers feel awkward when all other parts feel great
Massed Ayoob had a video on that.
Mas has everything figured out!
Like to see if there are models in 454 Casull or 460 Magnum.
the gun is awesome and expensive but i would love to have one
I couldn't help but to notice that your hands were shaking a little. I guess just from holding up the weight of the gun. I'd like to see how it performs in a vice.
price?
Gators. I’m an avid kayaker. Chest rig with one of these in gator country
You shoot the 44 Magnum better than the 357 Python.
