Hi Jolene, You have lots of company thinking that there is just one needle type that can be used in a serger. But now you know and it will open up all types of stitching and fabric opportunities for future projects. Let me know if you have questions about needle choices and glad you found the info helpful. thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips!
Waooo! Great and easy to understand video on serger needles. I have been using Schmetz needles for a long time on my serger and recently purchased some needles through Amazon for the same purpose. But these time I got Organ needles and I didn't Know what those letters stand for. With this video you open my eyes. Thanyou very much . I truly recomended every one how use Organ needles in their serger to watch this video because after that they will understand and be able to choose the correct needle for their serger work. TX?PR
Hi Daisy, glad the video was helpful. There are lots of needles that work well in sergers and it’s fun to experiment with them. Let me know if you have any questions and thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips!
So glad that I watched this one. I was very curious about the different needles. Had just bought some Organ needles ELx705 11SUK and 12SUk. Now I know more about them, thank you.
HI DONNA, Feel free to send along any questions or if you're having a problem. When I was a newbie, I needed lots of help and had a ton of questions. Thanks for watching!
Thank you, I’ve been using stretchy knit fabric, now I know why my needles were breaking . Thank you for the valuable info. I’m a newbie, I have a brother GX37 , recently purchased a serger 1034D trying to get a feel for it. I would like to start making my own clothes ( taking baby )steps.
I’ve only started using the serger and try to learn as I go along. This is so helpful as I got very confused when trying to purchased needles recently. Thank you so much for this. 🙏 Shirley xxx
Hi Shirley, you’re welcome. I’m always happy to help , especially new serger owners. Anytime you have a question, you can email me. Gail@gailpatrice.com.
Sometimes the eagerness to use the machine and make something leapfrogs over learning the important basics-needle, thread, fabric, tension and making test stitches and playing wizard of oz with dials to get things just right. Our sewing machines are precision instruments and a tool that requires our knowing the needful things to make our sewing experience more pleasant. Gail, you do an excellent job in pointing one where to look. It's only a handful of items, but get any of them wrong, the results can be disappointing.
It is the basics that are the foundation for good results. Often needles get overlooked and using the wrong type can be the cause of a multitude of problems. Glad you found it helpful and thanks for watching!
Hi Gail. Thank you for all of your tips. You save my life again and again. Can you please tell me if it’s okay to use leather needles in my serger? My needle thread keeps breaking while I am trying to flat lock doggie boots with fleece and faux leather. My universal works fine though the fleece seam but the thread keeps breaking when I try to seam the fleece and faux leather at the toe of the boot. I want the flack lock stitch because there won’t be seems inside the boot against the foot. I am lost and would really appreciate any ideas you have. I have a Baby Lock Vibrant. Also, I plan to make more with Gortex and fleece with waterproofing goo painted on the seams to try any make some boots waterproof.
Hi, I've never serged on leather and haven't used leather needles in a serger. It's always worth a try to test it. If you have some scrap leather (not super thick or heavy), try it out. I'll be curious to hear what your results are. If your machine feels like it's being over-stressed, stop. You don't want to break anything. Don't use larger than a 90/14 needle. That's the maximum that sergers are timed for. Let me know your results. Hope that helps. thanks!
@@GailPatriceDesign Gail! The leather 90/14 needle worked great in my serger! I can’t believe what a difference it made. Thank you so much for your ideas and encouragement. 😃
Hi Justine, The needle choice depends on the type of fabric you're using. Jersey and ballpoint needles are typically used on knit fabrics. For woven fabrics, my first choice is an ELx705 size 80/12 or 90/14 needle or a universal needle. Please let me know if you have more questions and thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips!
Thanks. Yes I use the ballpoint or Jersey needle in my sewing machine. I just wasn't sure if I could use the sewing machine needles in the serger. But I guess not?
@@jgsawka Yes you can use sewing machine needles in a serger, but can't use the ELx705 needles in a sewing machine. They are strictly for sergers. But the universal needle is probably the most common needle used in both sergers and sewing machines. I always get the best looking serger stitch with the ELx705 needles on woven fabrics as well as some knits. If the stitch looks funky, I switch to a stretch needle. Let me know if you have more questions.
@@jgsawka Needles can be confusing. If you ever have a chance to attend a class with Rhonda Pierce, the National Spokesperson for Schmetz Needles, take the class. She is a wealth of knowledge and just delightful. It's amazing how a needle can make or break a project. Schmetz also has a free downloadable app for phones and tablets that is filled with info. But feel free to contact me if you are having a problem with anything. Cheers!
Hi Samantha, A single needle will do multiple stitches; a 3-thread wide or narrow as well as a rolled hem. Two needles will do. 4-thread overlock stitch which is a stronger stitch especially handy for seams that will need reinforcement with stress. These might be garment seams, home decor projects, bags, etc. I have lots of Tip Clips about a variety of overlock stitches and how to to select the best one for various techniques. Feel free to reach out with questions and I’m sure your sewing machine dealer will offer lessons and classes to familiarize you with your 1034D. Thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips!
Wow! My sewing group was just having this conversation at our last get together. Another fantastically informative video, Gail. Thank you!
I just LOVE the information you’re sharing! I thought sergers could only use one needle! This was soooo helpful.
