So I just did a lot of calculations. But I'm coming up with this being around 1230 k/cals TOTAL. I estimated this being right under 3.5cups. Meaning this is right over 350K/cal per cup. I would have to feed my 60lb Malinois about 5 cups of this a day. My 60lb German Shepherd about 3.6 cups a day, and my 15lb spaniel about 1.3 cups a day. Hope that info helps someone else!

I make this every two weeks. Easy and healthy. Three tablespoons of ingredients rolled into wiener shape(thicker). Place in individual snack bags, freeze, and remove 1 pkg. in the evening, let thaw overnight, give half for breakfast and half dinner. I also make fresh rice and give about heaping tablespoon to meal.
Thanks for video, my dog skin has improved! Has 95% stopped licking and chewing areas on her paws, butt, and belly. You saved not only my dogs skin integrity, but taking to vet, for allergies. She’s like a different dog.
Afterthought: I serve meat raw with a little cooked rice, and my Maltese loves it. 😋 I also, as a treat..par boil (4min) beef ribs, when cooled, I cut most of the meat away from bone. Freeze meat for a snack. Freeze bones, and give as a snack (keeps tartar from teeth, and breath pleasant). This way I know what I’m giving my dog. My dog mostly stays on sofa, so when she has a bone 🦴 I spread small towel down and there’s no soiling sofa. When she has removed all the meat from bone, and has stopped enjoying, i toss bone in trash and place towel in laundry basket. When she see me spreading towel on sofa, she is so excited.

I multiplied this recipe by 1.5 (I happened to have 21oz of ground beef). It came out to just over 4 packed cups. My lean, 35lb dog seems to like 1 cup/meal. This averaged about $4 meal for her. She was not really into the raw version, but inhales it when it is lightly cooked and served at room temp (she is definitely a picky eater- she will let her dry kibble sit all day, and won't touch it until she has run around and works up a serious appetite.) We will try raw again, but for now, we think cooked is better than not at all. We are shooting to filter in this meal every other night, and see if it is something we can provide every meal down the road. Baby steps. She is happy, though, and we are so delighted to see her love her food for once!!

I've been making homemade food for my dogs and cats for 6+ years. My cats have been eating raw but I've always cooked the dog's food in my pressure cooker, and fed supplements as well. I tried this recipe today using ground turkey and served it raw. My dog flipped for this recipe! He loves it! Will definitely be making it again and again using different meats/veggie combos. Thanks for keeping it simple. :)

    • @helpfulnatural

6 week UPDATE: My dog loves this stuff!! I make a triple batch every 3 days, my dog is 100lbs. so 1 batch is one meal. I change out the meats every other batch: beef & turkey, and occasionally chicken, but not as often as the other meats. I also rotate different veggie combos, adding equal amounts of each: brussel sprouts, broccoli, kale, spinach, red bell peppers, or on occasion, frozen peas. My dog's itchy, allergy skin is at least 90% better! He's gone from constantly itching and scratching to the point of biting himself, to hardly any scratching at all. I couldn't be more thrilled!! His skin has cleared up and his fur has filled back in. He's also lost a few extra pounds. I'll be making this recipe for the foreseeable future!

Thank you! This is exactly what I've been looking for. I've ordered Dr Becker's book (along with Steve Brown's two books) but they haven't arrived yet. Right now our dog gets mostly home-cooked food with a little bit of kibble (Acana brand). I'm going to transition her to raw and will used this recipe to start off slowly. In a different video Dr Becker said to give the raw food as a treat for a day and increase the amount given, as treats, for a couple of days. If her poop is good after a few days of raw treats, give the raw as one meal (keeping the other meal for that day what she's been eating). If after a few days of one raw meal/day her poop is still good discontinue the old food and go 100% raw.
I have heard others say that adult, raw feed dogs should only eat one meal per day but I've never heard it from what I consider a trusted source. Our vet agreed with me home-cooking for our dog when I sent my "recipe" to a vet school for nutritional analysis but I don't think she's as happy about raw feeding so I probably won't ask her. What do you think, Rodney? By the way, I found out about you through Kimberly Gauthiere.

Great recipe for beginners that will serve old pros and their pets well too. The only thing I would add is that, if you can get your hands on grass-fed and grass-finished beef burger, you don't have to add Omega-3 oils, because grass-fed and grass-finished red meats already have Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids in the 50-50 ratio that seems to be ideal for both humans as well as carnivorous pets. Even Walmart and Aldi now carry such beef. Some of it is also organic-certified. I do like the idea of dog food that is perfectly safe for people to eat. Let's face it, if you buy a can or bag of dog food, and it's so disgusting that you'd have to hold your nose to try some, you don't want to kill your dogs with such slop, either. And you certainly don't want any children or elderly dementia patients ingesting it.

What I feed my Katie for a week.
    1 lb ground Turkey
    2 eggs
    1/4 cup white rice
    1 cup mixed vegetables
Unsalted bullion packet of either chicken or beef
Either fry it up in a pan or bake it in loaf pan.
She gets 1/2 cup a day. She is a Shih-Poo. She weighs 16 lbs.
She sometimes gets the runs from beef. So I only give her a beef patty when she seems constipated.
I will try your change up recipe next time I make hers but with ground Turkey. I freeze the leftovers after I cook the whole thing.
    Thank you for your recipe.

I thought my 15 y old beagle had a yeast overgrowth after watching Dr Becker’s ‘yeasty dog’ so I switched his dry food and saucy canned food for this recipe and it made a world of difference in his digestion. His poops 💩 now look healthy, his anis is no longer swollen and he doesn’t pass gas as much. BUT now he is suffering from skin issues...Could this be part of a detox from years of processed foods⁉️. I first noticed a round dark spot on his shoulder and then another and after a bath it rubbed off along with hair....ringworm? I haven’t gone to the vet because Of COVID19 and am trying to take care of this from home. THANK YOU Dr Becker and Rodney Habib for your helpful videos.

Thank you! I'm so glad there's finally a recipe you can cook!
I've long been reading about the benefits of a BARF diet for dogs and was excited about making the switch from canned wet food to raw. Unfortunately, my dog won't touch raw meat! No matter what I've offered her or how hungry she is (she will starve herself for days if offered something she doesn't want to eat), she even turns her nose up at raw chicken wings!
I'm having to give up on the dream of raw feeding and go to the next best thing: home cooked. But I'm struggling to find the same amount of quality advice on creating nutritionally balanced meals (what makes it more difficult, is that she's allergic to beef, lamb, pork and wheat).
Can the beef in this recipe be subbed for chicken or venison?
I would really appreciated more videos like this for nutritionally complete, grain-free meals that can be cooked for your dog. :)

  • @nicole6331

Great recipe, but you should also mention that according to Dr. Becker’s book (Real Food for Healthy Dogs & Cats fourth edition 2017), this should be fed in rotation and not every day because daily kelp for iodine supplementation that is non-standardized (in supplement form, like NOW 150 microgram tablets) can lead to allergies. I had to dig deep in the book for this.
Another point from her book, diets with beef exclusively need to include hemp oil (or hemp seed oil, which seems more fitting, but the book states hemp oil-so I’m not sure) to add the necessary linoleic acid (LA) that ground beef nutritionally lacks (soil depletion, etc.).
This recipe is divine, but please provide more information to the public as it’s not as simple as just “feed this and your dog will be healthy.” There’s tons of changing research. Much respect to Karen and Rodney (and Steve Brown) for creating this recipe, but please look more carefully. 🐶

I been feeding my dog dry dog food for years and am beginning to wonder if it took a toll on my dogs health. Now he is 12 years old and he does not want to eat any dry dog food at all no matter what brand it is. It started two days ago his complete discontent for dry dog food. I got some cooked chicken to see if he eat it, and he ate it up so the dog has appetite ,but only for real food not dried dog food. So after watching your video along with several other videos I probably will try to make him fresh dog food. I am hopping along with improving his appetite that the dogs health will improve. I should have done this years ago. I think there is some kind of misconception that dog food should be produced by corporations, because they know better then the average dog owner. I even watched a documentary on dry dog food, and basically in this documentary dogs are not meant to eat dry dog food ,and that it effects there health in the long run. I do not know, I am not an expert, or do I claim to be one .I do know that if the dog does not like dry dog food, and they become more lethargic and tend to have health issues then I begin to question dry dog food(I have bought expensive brand dog foods ). I think as consumers we tend to trust corporations to much when it comes to many important things, including food for ourselves and our pets. Thanks for the video, it gives empowerment and options to people who love there pets.

It could be painful on older teeth. My dog is 16 years old and he went off dried food. But I found that by dribbling a bit of water onto the pellets, it softened it up a bit. My dog is being spoiled now, because we know he's on the final lap of life, so by mixing cooked steak - with all of its juices - he has returned to eating the dried/moist food. I get the same result from using chicken or ham in the mix.

    14 oz ground beef - 543.3 calores
    1/2 t cod liver oil - 22.5
    2 t hemp seed oil - 83.3
    1 oz liver - 38
    1 egg - 72
veggies and spices (ginger, kelp) negligible calories

keep in mind, while dogs can stomach raw foods. They don't exactly use mouth wash after a meal. And if they are licking kids, they are spreading whatever bacteria is in the raw meat. This is something people often over look. If you have out door barn dogs, that don't interact with kids, sure, maybe raw will work. But a dog that is sharing a bed with people, will be covered in the bacteria. Because dogs lick them selves. Everything they lick, has the raw food on it. Just something to consider.

I hope you never know what real pain is. I agree that we need to look at everything when treating our pets and ourselves but to outright say that pain medication isn't a valid option is ludicrous. I have pain every day and I exercise, eat right and it doesn't matter, some people and animals are predisposed to pain or arthritis, etc & to not give pain medicine if needed is cruel. I'm thrilled your dog is better but I hope it never gets worse because there might come a time where just good food isn't going to fix it and your dog is gonna be in pain and your self righteous attitude isn't going to help.

I have six rescue dogs and they range in weight between 35 to 90 lbs. Being forced onto disability has really made it tough feeding them. But I'm going to do something other than feeding them dry dog food like purina and pedigree which are packed full of grains. All of my dogs are suffering due to the sh*tty food. So come hell or high water I am going to start feeding them real food. I can no longer stand to see them constantly ill. Even if I have to do without I will not feed them sh*t anymore. Taking in a dog is sort of like getting married. It is for better or worse except worse won't be feeding it garbage. The best food for cats with kidney disease is Feline Instincts. It's a powdered supplement mix that you mix into ground, raw meat along with water, canned pumpkin, a little bit of salmon oil. Here is the link: felineinstincts.com/feline-instincts-crf-my-natural-kidney-support-diet/ There are no ground bones in this recipe like in the Dr. Lisa Pierson recipe. Although that is a good recipe for healthy cats, it is not recommended for cats with kidney disease.

With puppies you need to be careful that they get the right calcium-phosphorous ratio and amounts, especially large breeds can develop skeletal issues. Bone has the right proportions of calcium and phosphorous and should make up about 10% of a raw/ barf diet for puppies. With this recipe I guess you'd need to increase the amount of ground egg shell, but there might be other considerations that I'm not aware of.

I did a lot of research on this topic before i started to feed my dog raw meats and please guys, do your research! While this might be a balanced meal i don‘t see how a dog that only gets this food would have a balanced diet.
I write this because in the comments i read things like "i only feed this to my dog" and that it not a good idea! This is a good starting point but do your research before switching your dogs diet. (Also a raw fed diet isn‘t suitable for all dogs.)
    In the long run:
Half an eggshell is not enough calcium for dogs, that‘s why they need bones. They also help with plaque!
Dogs need more than a small piece of liver. Feed your dog hearts, lungs and kidneys. They need it to stay healthy.
Where is the important fats from milk products such as jogurt? (While milk products are optional i highly recommend feeding them)
I‘d choose cut pieces of meat over ground meat long term. While ground meat has more fats, it’s in my opinion only suited for small breeds. You should feed your dog lager pieces of meat because with a meat-based diet the dogs stomach produces more stomach acid to break up the meat. Therefore they are able to break down lager pieces and actually start to need lager peices or the over production of stomach acid could become a problem.
Dogs do need carbs too, especially when they are very active.
(How much are you even supposed to feed your dog of this mixture? )
Also, please change the bell pepper with carrots. While red peppers aren‘t as dangerous for your dog, they need to be cooked before fed to your dog and should only be fed in moderation. And don‘t forget the fruits! Apples and strawberries are great. They are my dogs favourite.
Please do your research and don‘t only rely on videos like this. While i understand it‘s supposed to show how easy this kind of diet is, you shouldn‘t switch your dogs diet based upon one video without having done your research. A raw fed diet is easy...and not. It also has it‘s own dangers.

I'm concerned with adding the sardines ground up with the beef after reading about combining fish containing thiaminase with raw protein blends risks a deficiency of thiamin (Vitamin B1). They say you shouldn't store the ground up fish & ground up meat together. A deficiency in b1 scares me because the article I read said it doesn't take long for the negative effect which includes an enlarged heart. Wish I had known this before making this recipe & feeding it to my dog for 3 days already. I have a 5 lb dog who eats 4 oz of food per day so I have alot left over to freeze after making it & I certainly don't want to kill her! Another thing that concerns me is they dont tell you how many mcgs are in the kelp they use. That's kind of a big deal seeing how different products have different amounts. For instance now kelp has 450 mcgs with a tiny scoop. After doing the math my little dog needs around 50 mcg/day so instead of adding kelp to this recipe when I made it. I just add a tiny amount to her bowl everyday. It would be nice if dr becker or rodney would respond to this on their thoughts!

I've been doing this recipe for my little Maggie (shih-tzu) for quite some time. She LOVES it! However, her vet believes that beef and chicken could possibly be the cause of her ear infections, and some skin itching. So, her vet told me to replace the beef with fish. So, that's what I've done. I use Basa fillets and tuna (while still using the sardines called for in the recipe). Could you please tell me if there's other adjustments that I should make due to the switch from beef to fish? The vet hasn't seen any other changes in Maggie's health other than the ear infections have cleared up finally, and the itching has subsided greatly. I give Maggie this food for one meal each day, and a holistic dry, vegan food (by Halo) for her second meal of the day. Oh, and I bake the recipe like a casserole in the oven. I layer the fish fillets, then the rest of the mixture layered on top. I multiply the recipe by 4 times, and I get a months worth of meals for Maggie.

It is highly doubtful that beef or chicken would cause the problem, I would be much more concerned about processed vegan food for an animal whose teeth clearly identify him as a carnivore. Try lamb, pork, turkey, goat, rabbit, venison, bison, etc. in your recipe. Also, if your vet is okay with you feeding vegan to your dog, I'd find another vet.

Yes, you can. You can even mix them together. I think this recipe used beef because people don't freak out as much about raw beef as they do about raw fish or poultry. You should freeze your fish for 3 weeks just to kill any potential parasites.

This is incredibly helpful! What is the margin of error if I want to add in other things, like carrots, Kale, berries, bone broth, yogurt, herbs, etc to give her a little variety each time? Should I consider those things substitutions for any of the listed ingredients, or just whack them in there when I feel like I love her a little extra that day? Or am I projecting my feelings onto my dog (no way) and over-valuing variety?
