Hi, I wanted to say thank you for this recipe Teddy my mixed breed Chihuahua was 20 lbs and could not jump on our sofa and he laid down to eat. After three months of nothing but this dog food he is now down to 18 lbs! We are going to feed him this forever just increase his serving once he reaches 15 lbs which is what the vet said his weight should be. This has made a huge difference in our dog's life!

*Update: I had to let my sweet girl go back in August 2022. When they diagnosed her they gave her 2-4 months; she got 20! And I truly believe it was greatly due to changing her diet.
I enjoyed watching this. I started my homemade dog food journey 8 months ago after my 12 yr old, 60 lb mix was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. Her vet said on average they will get 2 to 4 months after diagnosis if you choose not to go through chemo (with chemo they can get up to 15 months). I chose not to because of the side effects. She was in pretty bad shape at the time of diagnosis. She was loosing a lot of fur & weight, her remaining fur had turned dull and very course, where before it had been soft and shiny. Her eyes were very foggy and her red snout had turned all white. She started drinking a lot of water (it was as if she couldn't get enough). And then she started peeing the bed. She's on incurin (one tiny pill) a day which has her incontinence under control. The vet told me to just let her do what she loves, so I started giving her an egg in the morning, (because she loves eggs). Then at about a week I noticed some changes in her. Her eyes were clearing and her white snout started turning red again. And so began my research for homemade dog food. After discovering how bad store bought dry dog food is I stopped feeding it to her. For the last 8 months she's had only human grade food and the results have been undeniably positive! She gained some weight, grew back her fur, (which is soft again) and has more energy. Last month at her yearly checkup her vet said she was doing as well as a dog on chemo. But in my opinion better, because she doesn't have the side effects from chemo. I truly believe had I kept giving her the bagged dry food, she would not be with me today.

@@Maincoonlover254 several years ago I cooked for my dog who had health issues. I did figure out the cost versus store bought. It actually came out to be only slightly less to make, but so much healthier. I bought the marked down (for quick sale) meat almost daily, and froze it. Saved a lot of money. Frozen vegetables from the “big box” store. I’d make a double batch every other weekend, portion serving size into ziplock bags, and freeze. Take two out at night to thaw. It’s simple, satisfying, and my dog loved it and I enjoyed the entire process. My recipe was very similar to this, less the pumpkin. I had laying hens back then and would crack one fresh raw egg on top a couple times a week.

I save my eggshells. I wash them and then cook them in the oven @ 400 degrees for 15 minutes on a cookie sheet. After they cool, I crumble them in a plastic bag. I then take them out and grind them in a coffee grinder that I bought just for this. This is how I give my dog calcium the natural way :) I also make homemade dog food. When it cools then I add the ground eggshells.

I started making my own dog food about 8 months ago. I have 3 dogs, one is 15 with dementia, one is 8 and the other 2. All mutts from the pound or found abandoned. The one with dementia is blind as well. The overall improvement is highly visual, all their coats are shiny and their teeth (I brush them) but the tartar build up decreased dramatically. I use a vast combo: ground chicken, turkey, beef, chicken or beef liver, most importantly is organ meat. Chicken gizzards, hearts and liver , brown rice, carrots, apples, sweet potatoes . The young one shed profusely on store bought food. Now it is minimal. The oldest was close to death last year. Had a few health scares. He can't see where he is going but runs nonetheless. LOL So glad you have so many followers because if a person has the time, it is crazy how the dogs will benefit.

Wow. you sound like me. I had 4, but as of last week only 3. I too had a dog with dementia and I would describe her just the same. But it did eventually get to be too much. Her body was healthy although her anal glands seem to have a hard time healing. But her puppies treated her badly and wanted her out of the pack. The vet said it was normal. They started treating her badly over a year ago. She was always a nervous wreck due to them...which meant her quality of life was not good. It's all well now. The household feels normal with just dogs instead of feeling like they were taking over EVER MOMENT of my life while I tried juggling them all.

I have been making my senior dogs food for the past 2 years. I thought it was time for a change. And that's how I found your recipe. I followed the recipe and I am quite pleased with the outcome. (so is my Charlie). I will continue to use your recipe for a while the only change I made was the following. I added hemp hearts and the reason I did that was they contain 10 G of plant protein 12 G of Omega-3s and six and all nine essential amino acids I also added ground flax. One tablespoon of ground flaxseed contains 37 calories, 2 grams of polyunsaturated fat (includes the omega-3 fatty acids), 0.5 gram of monounsaturated fat and 2 grams of dietary fiber. I also add chia seeds they're great for 11 G of fiber plus they become gelatinous when they are wet, so they help to hold the food together. I also like to add at least one red or purple fruit. I generally add blueberries for an antioxidant. The seeds, I add 3teaspoons of each. The blueberries, I add 1 bag frozen at the end while the food is cooling, otherwise they turn everything purple. So there you have it. Thanx for caring, and thanx for the new recipe.

I'm not sure if you are aware of this, even human can't digest plant based omega 3 efficiently. Human can only get 20%-30% omega 3 from plants unlike animal omega 3 which is way more bio-absorbable to human. This is just how our digestive system be able to breakdown those nutrients from plants. Therefore, I'm not sure how efficient would have been for dogs.

This is a good tip about not overlooking your organ meats. As I understand it, mixed organ meats are a a real necessity for dogs. A friend of mine has a lovely Dobe from excellent bloodlines, who always had what she felt was a substandard coat. She feeds a very high quality kibble to her 3 large dogs. After doing some reading, she began adding raw beef liver to their kibble and it had a huge impact on the quality of his coat and more energy (he is 11 yrs old). So I did alot of investigation and reading of my own and have decided that I am going to start cooking for my smallish dog and make my own dog kibble topper for my dog. I am going to do dog soup (essentially bone broth w vegetables) and freeze it. I can make it much more nutritious and an added bonus is that it will be cheaper than buying it in the store. She will still get a limited amount of kibble just to make sure that she is well rounded nutritionally. Her organ meats will be mostly beef liver and chicken hearts and gizzards because that is what is most readily available. I am also going to a couple of local butcher shops to investigate what my options might be to see if I can expand on the variety of pieces and parts.

@@karenannlara8461 hi babe! For one month of food, I get six chickens from Costco, a big bag of sweet potatoes, big bag of green beans, and about a pound of dried chickpeas from the bulk section at the regular grocery store. Since I’m lazy and don’t like preparing food too frequently, I’ll slow roast all 6 chickens in the oven for 12 hours so the meat just falls off the bone, cartilage, too. Chop the whole bag of sweet potatoes and boil them, and cook the chickpeas with a lot of water in the oven while the chickens roast because I don’t have a pot big enough. Chick peas expand like crazy. After the chickpeas are done and are still really hot, I’ll add the chopped green beans raw and they get a bit softer from the heat of the peas. Then I mix the peas, beans and sweet potatoes together and dismantle the chickens. Then I portion into Ziploc baggies to freeze. 6 ounces of chicken and 4 ounces of the sweet potato bean pea mix. She gets 10 ounces in the morning and 10 ounces at night and for lunch I gave her a half a cup of dry food just to get a little bit more fiber in her diet for solid poops. This recipe makes enough for two bags a day for anywhere between 24 and 30 days. I’m searching for a butcher that sells organ meat, because that’s what they should be eating often. It’s just hard to find kidneys, lungs, heart and liver at a reasonable price in large quantities. Give that pups a kiss for me 🥰 ❤️

I started feeding my dog a homemade diet last July, when we thought he was having allergy issues. It turned out he was hypothyroid, but I continued the homemade diet because he would get so excited for meal times. He “dances” for me twice a day before I feed him. Thank you for the ideas, I do need to mix up his diet. I currently make one recipe for him, and I would like to vary his diet. I feed him a supplement and give him cottage cheese and different fruits. Thank you for this video!

I also make my dogs their food. I make a few changes each week so it does not get boring for them. I use range chicken, pressure cooked and remove meat from bone. I boil quinoa in chicken broth, then I use another separate grain (brown rice, white rice, oatmeal, millet, sorghum) each week and boil it in chicken broth as well. I add mixed veggies (no corn) . Each day they have a multi vitamin, a scoop of ground flaxseed, a scoop of protein powder. The two senior dogs get a half a Dasuquin for their joints.
They are healthy and strong. I don’t trust any pet food manufactured, I know what’s in my dogs food. Dog food companies don’t love my dogs I do, so I give them the absolute best food and care I can give them.

Started this recipe with my 10 month old Cavapoo. He was originally on the Farmer’s dog but that started to become too expensive and his poop was always mushy! With this, his poop is much more firm and he absolutely devours it! I used the exact ingredients and measurement but without a crockpot. I made the veggies, meat and rice separately and then combined it once cooked. All in all it took about 2hrs with prep and cooking. Love it! Thank you for sharing!

I've made homemade dog food a few times when my standard poodle was sick because he wouldn't eat kibble or prescription canned food. Difference in what I made were about 1/4 the amount of peas and sweet potatoes, double the pumpkin, then about a cup of frozen blueberries, 2 chopped apples, and 2 eggs including the shells ground fine in the blender. I also use 1/2 brown rice and 1/2 steal cut oats or oatmeal. Instead of water, I used sodium free beef or chicken broth. I also added some broccoli.

Please don't give your dog raw veggies as their bodies are not designed to digest the cellulose. Steamed and cooked veggies are the appropriate way. Please visit the website NO MORE VET BILLS (it's not mine - wish it was) but I, as a canine nutritionist, have not looked back. It is the true way to feed your furbaby - one kind of food a day. RAW MEATS/BONES/ORGANS/EGGS one day, RAW FRUITS (RIPE) another day, and COOKED VEGGIES (pseudo-grain and veggies) a third with a fast after a meat day. (Y)

@@melinamary5246 I do steam veggies, I don't steam salad type baby kale, bell peppers, or cucumbers but I don't give my dog that every day either. I do make sure the multivitamin is adequate. It is usually the calcium-phosphorus ratio that needs to be balanced as Dogs need 5- 8 times more calcium than we do. I Give my Dog fruit as a snack, not with his meal (apples, pears, berries, watermelon, pineapple) Same with raw goat milk, whole milk kefir, or Greek yogurt (1-2 Tbsp.) I mix it with water as he doesn't drink water
His diet consists of Pastured Eggs Cooked with ground eggshells, Norwegian salmon oil, beef liver, turkey. Cooked garbanzo beans, pumpkin, carrots, sweet potatoes with skin, zucchini, broccoli, green beans, cabbage, beetroot (ground pumpkin seeds or ground flax seeds, peanut butter (that has 1 ingredient), dried cranberries, oatmeal (not instant), brown rice, buckwheat, quinoa, millet. Raw, frozen bones/ beef ribs once a week. My dog is obsessed with food so I don't think he needs to be fasting.

@@marsinaries8892 The foods you give are ok. However, feeding one kind of food a day is the knack. With just one stomach, we don't want eventually creative digestive stress and problems that take various outlets. So feed your cooked planets on one day to the tune of 6% body weight. Feed your fruit (RAW AND RIPE) on one day to the tune of 6%, and then your RAW meats/organs/bones/eggs on another day without the skin and fat to the tune of 3% body weight. Leave out the garbanzo beans, brown rice, or any grain for that matter. Pseudo grains are fine. Fasting means Healing the system. While we give too many foods we fail to realize if our dog's system is ready to digest, absorb and utilize these foods. So keeping it simple, like their ancestors, who lived on raw meat (primary foods) and fruits (secondary foods) will help promote longevity and good health. It is when they begin to age that the disasters of what we had been feeding them show up. Having young bodies they are able to work out problems to a certain extent while piling up the crap for a future date. As a canine nutritionist, I am adept at giving supplements apart from the right foods to be fed, but on deeper research and seeing the effects on my own dog, as well as countless others (check Rotational Monofeeding on FB), we have been missing the simple facts hiding in plain sight and have fed our dogs so much, they have not been given a chance to fast and direct their energies to heal any disorders within, as they have and are spending most of their time digesting all foods in unnatural form (cooked). Anyway, all the best to you and hope you check out Rotational Monofeeding and NOMOREVETBILLS (one and the same) for euphoric revelations and restoration of good health to our fur babies. (Y)

I tried several different brands and she wouldn’t touch anything but the pedigree wet, in the individual packets, she would not touch anything from a can. But anyway, I noticed a lot of times, she would just let it sit. Someone told me about Fresh Pet, she LOVED it! Didn’t have any issues with her not eating. Then recently I noticed she wouldn’t eat it like she used to. Then when I gave her the homemade dog food, I had to buy a slow feeder because she ate it too fast. Great video Lexy. Thanks for the pumpkin tip, I’ll try that. I too add a combination of food to her meat and give her a whole can of sardines in water twice a week. She’s six months old and has so much energy that she gets all the dogs (older ones) to all run and play together. She’s a very happy living alpha Shepherd puppy mix that’s pure muscle with a nice silky coat.

I used to make homemade dog food, and I’d get cases of beef liver from a restaurant I used to work at. I’ve been thinking about doing it again, so thanks for the great info!😊

I think this is great! The only thing is I went to the vet yesterday and told her I made my dogs food. She advised to stay away from peas as there have been some reports that peas have been linked to heart problems in some dogs! I researched on the internet and there is mixed information.😣I decided to stay on the safe side and will stop putting peas in my pups home made food.

Great video. I’m sharing it with friends just beginning the journey of switching to a home made diet. I started 5 years ago, wish I had this video then. Today my 12 yr old AussieDoodle has the energy of a 5 yr old. She has a beautiful coat and has maintained her weight and body mass. I’ve already started our new puppy on it too. It’s easy once you get started and rewarding to see how healthy they are. My older dog comes running every time I pull out the instant pot.

I make my dog's food as well, but I can't use any commercially produced meats. So I use canned mackerel. I have used rabbit, but I can't find it anymore 😭. In addition to a lot of the same veggies you use, I also add a fruit (apple, banana or blueberries), Missing Link which is a supplement of trace minerals and sea kelp. I mix up the raw ingredients in my stand mixer, portion onto a baking sheet, and in winter I bake it as patties, but in summer I just freeze the portions raw and feed partially defrosted. Cooking does break down a lot of nutrients, so I like to do raw.

Skie, you can use any rice with any meat. My dog like when I use glizzard chicken (cheaper at Walmart) chicken pea and white rice. I sometimes add with spinach, kale, broth, carrot, purée pumpkin , sweet pumpkin , etc. if I have $ but she seems happy enough with plain rice and meat most time I have on hand to add is potatoe, apple, carrot, and chickpea , not all . See sprinkle with multivitamin and probiotic powder or oil

I started this even though my vet is against homemade dog food. Now that she said that, think i will change vets.. Instead of working with me to develop or guide recipe, she said against it. I work in healthcare so know how to steer away from any doctors that do not acknowledge healthy eating. Sad

98% of veterinary offices are owned by a handful of corporations. They will never suggest taking care of your dog holistically. I had a beagle and Brittany Spaniel who were starting to be aggressive toward on another at about 7yrs of age. The trainer told me to make homemade food. That guy changed my whole program. Both lived to 14. My nine year old heeler is eating homemade food now as well. She is doing so much better and I'm not throwing my money away on kibble. She gets 100% of her nutrients. It's just the way forward. Same as humans eating a clean and balanced diet! ❤🐾🐾🐶🐶

Hi from India. Saw your post. Felt good to read. In India, we generally start with kibble but slowly our pets move to home cooked foods. But vets say that it's harmful for dogto eat home cooked meals, as they don't get enough nutrients. I don't listen to them, my instincts say that my golden boy will be healthy.

Just avoid ztra see salts , seasoning , boil meat in bone broth...as it's less fat ..just do your research and this recipe that she is making is the same ingredients that I use I just alternate them every other one I use green beans and carrots and I use sweet potato real sweet potato spinach and you add cranberries. Be careful with the pumpkin over feeding too much because it can be a great stool softener and will. Firm up their poo...I keep real pumpkin on side as well for times they have a upset stomach .. I've learned tips and tricks along the way but my vet told me when my dog was nine that I would be lucky to have another year with him because he had cancer. I changed his food changed his diet started cooking for him and he's 14 now and still going strong.

TFS another great video. I so need those slow bowls for my pets. My girl eats so fast that she sometimes throws up so I have learned to withhold some of her food and have to feed it in segments. Slow bowl to the rescue! Also going to purchase that instant pot...this 2 hour prep/cook is tedious between baking or broiling their boneless/skinless chicken or turkey, then the veggies, cooking brown rice, carrots/sweet potatoes..whew!!! Thank you for all the great info...game changer!
