Great playing and amazing review Paul! I agree with you on the Blackhawks. They don't necessarily sound bad though, like I don't mind them very much, but I would never put them in my guitar personally. All a preference thing!
I'm wondering why you weren't able to get a good clean sound with the Blackhawks. Was it really because of the Ibanez Wood/body? I'm asking because Northlane can achieve a nice Disney Channel clean lol with those same Blackhawks
+Lazy It's more to do with the action, I suppose. I don't set up the guitar differently from how the owner likes it, and I felt like it was hard to achieve a really truly pleasing clean tone. I stand by my reasoning and personal opinion, just didn't end up loving the clean tone. If there were some good ol' DiMarzios maybe it would sound more along the lines of a clean that I like, but then the distortion sound would be wildly different.
Really fantastic review. Two questions. Buy first. Esthetically it's magnificent. Pickups clearly sound to much high gain. I have a Titan pickup and it's a behemoth of a pickup, way to much for me to handle. I'm a fan of SD JB SH-4. First question which pup would you recommend from Bare Knuckle? Second question, I'm not much of a fan of the wizard neck. Sold my Jem for that reason. Can you elaborate on the difference? According to Ibanez website it's the same. Great job on the review. Cheers!
Hey, Paul! Just wondering whether you think the problem with the pickups in this particular JBM was not the pickups themselves, but the pickup height? The blackhawks are generally a great set of pups, and I don't see why they'd be dramatically different in this setting.
It could have potentially been the height but this was almost a year ago mate. I don't think the height was bad or severely in one direction or the other at all :/
Paul Ozz Haha, I know it's an old video, sorry! I'm just trying to figure out what would make them sound too different here to the other settings. Mahogany body+maple top isn't too unusual. Anyway, great review as always.
Since i mainly play modern aggressive metal music, like Chimaira, Slipknot, Textures, Upon A Burning Body, Limp Bizkit, some linkin park,... would this guitar fit my needs of a high gain agrresive guitar? Or the pickups would hold me back from achieving the aggressiveness i´m looking for?
Hugo Simoes Periphery's tone is usually very focused in the lows mids, the bands you mentioned usually have a pretty muddy guitar sound (especially slipknot and LP). Still, the titans are high output and can put out a lot of distortion, I think with the right setup you can get great tones for almost all kinds of metal. They're still pickups tho, if you don't like them you can always go for something else
+Will Smyser This is my favourite Ibanez because it is the best playing Ibanez I have ever come across. Beating out all old JEMs and UVs, everything. That includes comfortability!
Hello Paul.I know this is a late question considering the age of this video, but how much of a set up did this guitar need out of the box? I have read alot of horror stories about Ibanez guitars being bad quality unless they are Made in Japan. I really wanna buy this as my upgrade into the high end guitar realm but I'm concerned of the quality issues with Ibanez. Thanks.
+soft_like_silk2 hendrix This guitar is the more expensive variant of Jake Bowens signature guitars, and as such I am fairly certain it must have come to it's owner in good condition with a reasonable setup. Personally, I never trust factory setups no matter how good they are, and make sure the guitar works for me and not against me. I think if you go after one of these, you won't regret it, but do educate yourself on how to set it up!
Your playing is absolutely superb, but why do you have so little gain in your sound ? It sounds rather weak to my opinion this way. Also loved the necrophagist-y type of leads.
You are right, Blackhawks dont do that well in dark sounding woods. A Nailbomb would be better for mahogany IMO. But nice review! If only ibanez would give us a 7 string one! But I think this is because dimarzio has taken too long with a 7 string titan.
+Lucas LeCompte I don't think I'd throw any kind of Bareknuckle into it. I'd want something really medium output and less saturated, I think it'd do better. I don't want to have 500% output D:
You salty bro? Lundgrens would have sounded great in this one, I think. It'd be great to use this guitar as a tone testing beast, since the maple and mahogany compliment each other in very tonally pleasing ways.
i want to try every pup in one, cause it would be cool to have a metal one and then a fat one with gravity storms or something and one with low output stuff
Ti Hammlet That's why I love it, the amount of gain is brutal and my tastes border on the filthiest of sludge - that being said yeah I can see where you're coming from if you still want some super crisp definition to each string then dialing back a bit or adding an OD to tighten it up in the mix may help.
+Ti Hammlet If I dialed it back too much it would have sounded worse - extremely thin. I tried many tone variants and this sounded the best / cleanest. They really are just too damn much, and not for me whatsoever. I tried tightening them up but to no avail. Oh well!
What i think would do that guitar justise would be to throw an EMG81/85 or 81/60 set in there... Sothing so striped down for metal shut have had the most reconisable metal pups in the world :P
Mannnn... What a pain in the rear... :/ It's just that it kind of reminds me of the Mick Thomson MTM Ibanez, you know with the bindings, all black and reverse headstock even the vol is in the same spot, and the MTM1 has actives... ;) www.ibanez.com/products/u_eg_page15.php?year=2015&cat_id=1&series_id=29&data_id=302&color=CL01
Agreed the blackhawks are ruining some bubbly leads, but a very aesthetically pleasing guitar especially for ibanez which In peronsally find boring and without much thought into playability
That guitar is a modernized version of the JPM100. yes. John Petrucci. And Jake Bowman just happens to be his nephew. The Lo Pro Edge was brought about in the early 90's. They just shelved it after John went to Ernie Ball. It is the best Floyd Rose bridge ever made. But the guitar is beautiful, and I'm going to buy one just as I own the JPM100. But overall, it's a glorified JPM.
Those pickups really complement the look of the guitar!
Oh lord have I been waiting for this one
Dude those riffs were sweet
by the way I'm stoked I found your channel! So many good reviews on amazing gear!
+Steven Hernandez Thanks for the love, bro!!
I love the Black Hawks in the neck but the bridge pickup is too harsh. I have them on my Schecter JL7.
Great playing and amazing review Paul! I agree with you on the Blackhawks. They don't necessarily sound bad though, like I don't mind them very much, but I would never put them in my guitar personally. All a preference thing!
+Erebus5620 Precisely right! Preference! :-)
Beautiful guitar I love it sounds great
I gotta say that you seem to have gotten a lot better since last time I heard you play
+Fedethedangerous95 Practice practice practice...
+Paul Ozz Keep up with that good routine then! ;)
thanks man :)
Amazing as always Paul! How does this compare to Lets say a caparison dellinger or horus. Which one is More playable?
Great review! Even better playing. Would you say this guitar is worth its price tag in terms of build quality?
+ShadeofSound OHHH YES

The SD JB/sh 4 has way more output than the titan.

Totally forgot to ask, is the bridge a Ceramic or Alnico?

goddammit i have never had so much GAS for a single guitar in my life and jfc Paul you arent helping me with this! excellent review friendo
Ibanez tremolo always been the best for me. And I tried all and they don't loose the tune
Do you prefer the finish on this neck vs other less finished maples?
You said it's your favorite Ibanez, but is it the most comfortable?
+Will Smyser This is my favourite Ibanez because it is the best playing Ibanez I have ever come across. Beating out all old JEMs and UVs, everything. That includes comfortability!

+Paul Ozz thanks for the reply man. and i totally agree. one more thing......how does the jbm27/20 compare to this?
NO idea mate, sorry. I wish I could tell you.
+Paul Ozz haha. oh well. guess ill just go try it out for myself haha. thanks anyway pal. great videos by the way. i admire your absolute honesty.
cheers brother :) all the best and good luck, let me know if the cheaper JB is any good!
Your playing is absolutely superb, but why do you have so little gain in your sound ?
It sounds rather weak to my opinion this way.
Also loved the necrophagist-y type of leads.
+The dying Hunter It's the pickups. It's a lot of gain, just very 'high'.
Your playing is incredible.
Technical but soulful.
+WholeLottaBulldog Thanks bro!! :)
Paul! If you can get your hands on a Jackson Juggernaut ht6 or 7 you need to do a review on it!!! :O
You are right, Blackhawks dont do that well in dark sounding woods. A Nailbomb would be better for mahogany IMO. But nice review! If only ibanez would give us a 7 string one! But I think this is because dimarzio has taken too long with a 7 string titan.

+Paul Ozz do you know what sounds good in these? titans, who would have guessed?
You salty bro?

what is the difference between the jbm100 and jbm20 because no way im going have money for the jbm100 haha
+9tao9 I'm not sure! I'll be at NAMM in a week and I'll report back via video me thinks.
Damn fast reply! well looking forward to the video if it happens :)
You got it!
10/10 Playing and Review my boy!
Those high gain tones are so wondiferously filthy.
+keegan connor a bit too much gain IMO, if he complains about too much output, why not dial it back a bit?
He's using an AxeFx I guess?
Ti Hammlet That's why I love it, the amount of gain is brutal and my tastes border on the filthiest of sludge - that being said yeah I can see where you're coming from if you still want some super crisp definition to each string then dialing back a bit or adding an OD to tighten it up in the mix may help.

I tried tightening them up but to no avail. Oh well!
How does this hack have a signature series?!
Lmaooooo
I put the dimarzio titans in my Carvin DC127 and theyre amazing. This is a great review of course but the Titans belong in this guitar
+tehmisteh Thank you buddy! Fair enough!
still a great review though. Your playing has gotten better too!
Arigato tehmisteh
I love these videos keep it up.
What i think would do that guitar justise would be to throw an EMG81/85 or 81/60 set in there... Sothing so striped down for metal shut have had the most reconisable metal pups in the world :P
+Martin Olsen I would love to hear them in such a guitar but routing a space for the battery would be a massive pain in the ass.
Mannnn...
What a pain in the rear... :/

I would throw in some DiMarzio Dominions for sure though
I thought the black hawks sounded awesome???? I dunno they sounded freakin sick to me
+Victor Kviberg Just a bit too harsh and compressed and EMG-y for me. Whilst not being EMGs. Which makes no sense to me.
huh... i guess its all just personal preference in the end :p
Of course! That's all I offer in my reviews!
+Paul Ozz aren't the Hawks BKPs answer to a passive EMG-y pickup?
I've heard that. I prefer the EMGs.
Agreed the blackhawks are ruining some bubbly leads, but a very aesthetically pleasing guitar especially for ibanez which In peronsally find boring and without much thought into playability
Solid....state!

I prefer the original Dimarzio Titans much better
You know, I do like the Titan's too. Hard for me to pick one over the other though!
Whats going on lately. Why are all these metal heads getting classy and awesome looking guitars without ridiculous body shapes haha
+JgHaverty Tastes change and develop, as do people.
The Blackhawks look waaaaaaay better than the originals cosmetically haha
