that makes no sense because john married into the family, they’re not related by blood which means you cannot say “talent runs through the family” from this example
Spooky Stork Running Wild he’s definitely largely influenced by him in his life, so it shows how much a persons play style can change no matter how influenced you are by an artist
Petrucci is such a "scanner". It's like he's watching Jake and mentally he's just totally sussed what he's doing...while ripping on his own guitar. He does the same thing at G3. To be at such a level and still wanting to know what everyone else is doing. One of the few guitarist's guitarist around.
stormyandcold That's Petrucci for us all. His curiosity brought DT to whatever level they are now, combining it with the other members knowledge and aspirations. Never satisfied, always learn and try something new, that's where progressive music might take you (mentally).
stormyandcold I think that description fits more perfectly on Guthrie Govan. Just watch any videos of him playing with other guitarists. Petrucci is my all time favorite in rock/metal, but Govan is the Shang Tsung/Encyclopedia of the Electric Guitar. XD
Jakes Ibby looks badass. Not usually a fan of gold hardware but the accent of the matte chocolate finish, natural binding and gold tuners... wow. Most excellent.
Man, Jake is so lucky to have John as an uncle. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love my uncles, but to be able to learn so much of a beautiful thing playing guitar with such love and dedication, I am jealous for sure. I would love to learn to play like Jake and John.
Literally replaying this video for the jams (I've memorized the entire spoken part of the video, thank you DiMazio for uploading this). The jams are at the following times: 0:00-0:41 3:07-4:27 6:47-8:20 ENJOY!
Man are they improvising together or are those actual songs? Jake probably has the classiest looking metal guitar out there. I love it. So elegant looking but simple.
Eh, No. Its beautiful and unqiue, nothing about it is really classy though. Its definetly an "in your face" sort of thing. Blue powder paint, gold hardware, tortoise pickguard... Classy is elegant and simple. Black with a gold touch. Elegant and simple. But I swear, I would do unspeakable things for the TAM100.
awesome, courteous, informative interview. love these dudes, we need more thoughtful interviews about metal and metal music creation like this. excellent video.
it's gotta be a weird feeling being paired with john petrucci in one of these videos as a younger guitar player...here's this fucking legend of prog guitar who was writing the under a glass moon solo while you were in grade school and all of the sudden you're here comparing notes on pickup voicings, etc.
00:00 - 00:47 3:07 - 4:28 6:48 - 8:21 I have so much for this song that will never exist outside of this video. Shame too, its absolutely perfect. I never did learn how to edit videos lmao good job
One thing I think that's interesting is that Jake's rig is a tiny Axe FX II rig that's very compact and John's (historically) is a massive rig with many amplifiers and other pieces of analog gear, yet both have a massive respect for each other's sound. (yes I know John now uses an Axe FX II in his rig, but it's just an effects unit and not used for amp tone)
i really love how john petrucci roll, petrucci and gilbert . .yngwie i sucks same things same things, vai is out of this world thou i love them i grew up listening to their works.
I just played Jake's JBM100 at a music store, those guys were friendly enough to let me play it for an hour, and that guitar is SOOOO GOOOOOOOOD. It is seriously the best guitar I've ever played.
The music on this video was gorgeous. Also sooo stoked for the new Jake Bowen Ibanez signature to arrive, Periphery fans who play guitar have been waiting this for a long while :D
I'll have to admit that DT has definitely reawakened my otherwise dormant side of playing music. By listening to them throughout the years (for me, I started listening to them around the mid-nineties... and ever since). I'm 49 and I've played several different instruments in the past... and have settled upon the guitar (and ocasionally keyboards), now. I guess that I just wanted to say, that I love how a great band can influence and inspire others to follow their "dreams" in/of the musical arena. :)
Once Periphery's third album comes around, I DEMAND more collaborations with John Petrucci. These little demo songs in this video are incredible, and if "Erised" is any indication, JP and Periphery are a match made in prog heaven.
John was probably the biggest influence on me in terms of getting me to really want to learn the guitar, now after 8 or so years, Jake and his band are a major influence on my writing style; and because of that, I find this video to be a kind of special...to me at least.
John guested on the Periphery song Erised, and Jake did a lot of the electronic stuff on that song. You might want to check it out! On top of that, the song at the end that they jam on is one of Jake's solo songs, "Distortion Corridor"
That moment you realize that the voice at the end of Icarus Lives! was possibly Jake's voice. Lol maybe I'm late and maybe I'm wrong. To me they just sound a lot alike.
Basically it's "volume swell" by using a volume pedal. It is the same effect that is used in the middle section of Dream Theater's "The count of Tuscany".
Petrucci for the 4th guitarist in Periphery
HELL YEEEAAAH !!!!
Joe Bordash Petruphery!
Erised
No one else would ever get the chance to solo
Bob Dole haha.. yeah
This is the first time I've seen Jake without a beard...
The Rachmanioff There can be only one. John's beard won and during the quickening, absorbed Jake's beard.
James Junior
Dude, I laughed way too hard at your comment 😂😂😂
i knew something was throwing me off when I played this video! He doesn't have a beard.
saaame
He looks good
Still can't believe Petrucci is Bowen's uncle.
wait.... what?
MKRocker94
no, "real" uncle.
He is actually his real Uncle :)
Jester Syxe not really, it's by marriage
John is married to Jake's aunt
Uncle Petrucci
you know you've made it when john petrucci says he's a huge fan of your band.
He has to, he's Jake's uncle. :P
***** He doesn't HAVE to, just because he's family. Lol
***** oh wow that's awesome! i had no idea haha. talent runs through the family obviously.
that makes no sense because john married into the family, they’re not related by blood which means you cannot say “talent runs through the family” from this example
Spooky Stork Running Wild he’s definitely largely influenced by him in his life, so it shows how much a persons play style can change no matter how influenced you are by an artist
"And you still play in C!"
Rofl'd hard at that one.
It's the best tuning soundwise.
Having Petrucci in your family is some of the best musical PR you could possibly have.
Petrucci is such a "scanner". It's like he's watching Jake and mentally he's just totally sussed what he's doing...while ripping on his own guitar. He does the same thing at G3. To be at such a level and still wanting to know what everyone else is doing. One of the few guitarist's guitarist around.
stormyandcold Him and Tosin are just in a whole other league in my eyes
stormyandcold That's Petrucci for us all.
XD
i always do that - you have to do that. how can you not do that?
stormyandcold he has absolute ear
Jakes Ibby looks badass. Not usually a fan of gold hardware but the accent of the matte chocolate finish, natural binding and gold tuners... wow. Most excellent.
I also love that he didn't overdo the gold. Still black bridge and knobs etc.
Fretboard with only 12th fret inlay
Haha Ibby
Somewhere in between the shots Bowen was like “hey, mind if I lead this jam?” And Petrucci is like “you’re getting pretty good man! ... but no”
source?
that jam at the end was beautiful
+josueDx300 ikr
It's basically Petrucci jamming over Jake Bowen's song called Dreamless, which is an awesome song.
It was!
Man, Jake is so lucky to have John as an uncle. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love my uncles, but to be able to learn so much of a beautiful thing playing guitar with such love and dedication, I am jealous for sure. I would love to learn to play like Jake and John.

6:47-8:20
ENJOY!
It's so cool to see incredible old prog artists playing with incredible new prog artists. Both these guys are such masters.
That last bit was so tight. Jp is a mastermind of leads
They really need to do an album together! Love the songs they jammed
Greatest part is Petrucci is Bowen's Uncle.......crazy shit man.
And I didn't know this but Jake is John's nephew.
Actually johns wife is jakes aunt
so they're related by paper lol!
speedjunkie66 They kind of look a little bit a like. Not like twins, obviously. But that's just me.
Alex Heller yeah i kinda see it
Garegh62 maybe compared to the young beardless Petrucci
Man are they improvising together or are those actual songs?
Jake probably has the classiest looking metal guitar out there. I love it. So elegant looking but simple.

omfg
the end song
it is so amazing
YESSSSSS IT S SO DAMN BEATIFUL!!!!
JP has such a calming, silky smooth voice. I could listen to him talk all day.
awesome, courteous, informative interview. love these dudes, we need more thoughtful interviews about metal and metal music creation like this. excellent video.
2:40 "A lot of people don't realize this but the right hand is just as important as the left hand"
John Browne has entered the chat.
Can we appreciate how beautiful and wholesome John Petrucci is?
it's gotta be a weird feeling being paired with john petrucci in one of these videos as a younger guitar player...here's this fucking legend of prog guitar who was writing the under a glass moon solo while you were in grade school and all of the sudden you're here comparing notes on pickup voicings, etc.
that ibanez is fucking sick
hey a video where Jake isn't restringing a guitar or soldiering pickups
MAN I LOVE WHAT YOU GUYS WERE DOING AT THE END OF THE VIDEO. CAN YOU GUYS DO MORE OF THAT AND PUT IT ON A CD? I WOULD BE THE FIRST ONE TO BUY IT
This titan sounds awesome on rythim playing god
" And your still playing in C " -the story of my life😂
00:00 - 00:47
3:07 - 4:28
6:48 - 8:21
I have so much for this song that will never exist outside of this video. Shame too, its absolutely perfect. I never did learn how to edit videos lmao good job

I just want to keep hearing them play together. So awesome
3:11 John: Hey Jake i can djent too, look!
Jake: Gnarly dude!
John: Yeah.
I just played Jake's JBM100 at a music store, those guys were friendly enough to let me play it for an hour, and that guitar is SOOOO GOOOOOOOOD. It is seriously the best guitar I've ever played.
That jam at the end... My ears melted with joy!! ^_^
They should do a project together omg
It already happened in 2012
@@theneglected3144 name?
@@aryankulshreshtha5236 John had a guest solo in one of Periphery's song called Erised
I could listen to end collaboration on a loop for hours.
AHEEEY WHERE ARE THEIR MAJESTIC BEARDS?
Almost like dad & son. Awesome.
well they are uncle and nephew
This type of combination has potential
damn Jake is so lucky to be part of Petruccis family, i wish i could jam with John like this...
god i wish i could call petrucci uncle john
That jam on the end was fucking next level
Larry....this video might be one of my favs. SImply unreal. Thanks for posting. Glad to be with the Dimarzio family!!
The music on this video was gorgeous. Also sooo stoked for the new Jake Bowen Ibanez signature to arrive, Periphery fans who play guitar have been waiting this for a long while :D
Lucky guy to have John as his Uncle!!
Both without massive beards
What times!!
I love how natural and honest this video seems. Makes them almost seem human.
the ending was downright amazing
The last part was just pure beauty!
That last jam at 6:47 is so cool!
Feeling the same way!
very floyd!
it's one of Jake's songs, dreamless
Oliver Hart Do you know the name of the song?
JonnyJohnsonHD Jake Bowen - Dreamless /watch?v=M-_6wk99Xlw
That last jam is great, love ambient uses of guitars.
These two should form their own band. It could be called Peripheral Dream.
I'll have to admit that DT has definitely reawakened my otherwise dormant side of playing music. These two need to write an album together!!!

The echo part Jake is playing is phenomenal!
I also want an uncle like Petrucci!
Jake and John need to make a collab album. Those insert plays were fantastic. Especially that last ambient one. So nice.
6:53 jakes ambient stuff is so amazing!
Hi, DiMarzio officially releases the Titan on Oct. 1st and they should be available in stores by the end of the month.
Hope that helps,
Larry DiMarzio
I would buy an album of just them jamming
Its nice to see 2 musicians communicate on the same level for 8 Minutes
John was probably the biggest influence on me in terms of getting me to really want to learn the guitar, now after 8 or so years, Jake and his band are a major influence on my writing style; and because of that, I find this video to be a kind of special...to me at least.
Devon Modugno the outro is actually a Jake Bowen song called "Dreamless"
jake looks odd without a beard
he looks like hes about 13
John guested on the Periphery song Erised, and Jake did a lot of the electronic stuff on that song. You might want to check it out!
On top of that, the song at the end that they jam on is one of Jake's solo songs, "Distortion Corridor"
A Jake Bowen and John Petrucci album would be AWESOME! Can't wait for these pickups!
it's awesome because Periphery and Dream Theater are my favorite bands, and when they do stuff together it's like......Gods doing props.
I want petrucci to live forever.
This was an awesome video of John and Jake. Sounds like they are kinda battling each other instead of playing complimentary to each other.
wow john's playing sounds so fresh together with jake!
I LOVE what John is playing at 6:57, sound a lot like Robert Fripp.
One of his idols.
really big fans of JP !!!!
keep rock!!!
That ending, oh my word.
haha, oh yes :D
Downright transcendent material right there. Could listen to that for hours.
Anthony Nelson Yes indeed. Great emotion as well.
That ending is from Jake's Electronic Project, not sure which song tho, but I bet you will like all the songs he made.
Aleš Balon Sweet. Thanks for the heads up on that.
Godamnit I wish I was John Petrucci
Just a good old family jam sesh. I love this
This is the moment John allowed Jake to have a beard.
9 years ago I watching this
Wow, they sound so good together!
It was terrific! nice video nice guitars nice pickups and definitely amazing players!
I'm in love with Jake's guitar.
6:55 the whole outro is gorgeous
that jam at the end is incredible!
It is! It's Jake's track "Dreamless" from his solo Electronica Project. Check his soundcloud out, wonderful stuff.
Still here in 2020 to listen once again to the jam at 6:53
That moment you realize that the voice at the end of Icarus Lives! was possibly Jake's voice. Lol maybe I'm late and maybe I'm wrong. To me they just sound a lot alike.
Everytime I watch a Petrucci interview im always shocked by his modesty. Two of the best bands out there
4.29 that Petrucci look
John guested on the Periphery song Erised, and Jake did a lot of the electronic stuff on that song. You might want to check it out!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
4:16 jake stops playing because petrucci made him shit his pants with that run.
Wow..;;;; they need collaboration Album.
Hi, John and Jake used a Fractal pre-amp into Masa amps on the recording.
Hope that helps,
Larry
Ugh, I want that outro to be a song that I can have and own and keep forever.
Hi, Thanks for asking but not yet. However, there is a 7 string Illuminator.
Hope that helps,
Larry DiMarzio
Jake Bowen without a beard is something that cannot be unseen.
Basically it's "volume swell" by using a volume pedal. It is the same effect that is used in the middle section of Dream Theater's "The count of Tuscany".
