People disliking this video just need to chill out, just because it goes against a meme, doesn’t mean that Darian deserves to be bombed with dislikes. Micheals season was bad, especially with Dale Sr passing at Daytona.
Can't be understated how bad of a season this was for Mikey in 2001. Finally win your first race while your best friend dies, then trying to carry on with that.
It’s noteworthy that Sterling Marlin had an almost opposite season. Although he **accidentally** caused the crash that killed Dale Earnhardt (and I can’t stress **accidentally** enough), he was a consistent top-10 runner and even scored a couple wins.
You do realize that Sterling Marlin was cleared of any criminal accountability in Earnhardt's death and that neither Teresa nor Junior pressed charges on him or (at least appeared) to hold a grudge, right?
First off, I'm gonna say I like Mikey. Now, the bad stuff. A lot of his issues were getting caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Having said that, I also wonder if the many years he spent in bad equipment (no disrespect to the Wood Brothers) made it difficult for him to adapt to good equipment in 2001? A win at Daytona is pretty easy, hold the hammer down, don't run out of fuel, avoid wrecks, communicate adjustment needs to the team, and hit your marks on pit road if you're in a good car.
Great video as always! I want to make a recommendation for a bad seasons video. Richard Petty's last couple of years weren't very good, but, his 1989 season was atrocious it was also the first time he failed to qualify for a race in 18 years.
Why not go ahead and do a NASCAR busts on Michael Waltrip. His brother won 84 races and got 3 championships. Darrell Waltrip is considered a top 5 best NASCAR driver. Meanwhile Michael Waltrip only won 4 races in his career from 1987 to the 2017 Daytona 500.
Speaking of bad 2001 seasons: Buckshot Jones Petty gave him the tap to drive the 44 for his first full time Cup Series season and uhhh yeah, didn’t work.
Would be interesting to compare all the drivers' seasons who won the Daytona 500 as their only win in a season. You'd have Waltrip, Bayne, Dillon, Newman in 2008, and Kurt Busch in 2017.
I don't see how it's controversial. It was no doubt a terrible season obviously besides the Daytona 500 win. His whole career was mediocre. Great restrictor plate racer without a doubt though.
When it comes to Michael Waltrip, every year he drove was a bad year but don't get me wrong he was a big threat at the restrictor plates his final Daytona 500 in 2017 he finished 8th
Interestingly, if the Series were held in the state of Florida that year, Michael would have had a good season as he won the Daytona 500 and placed second in the Pepsi 400 and 2nd at the Pennzoil Freedom 400 at Homestead. That was pretty much his only good finishes of 2001, in the state of Florida.
10:22 says it all. He would end up having another top 10 finish at Homestead, but three top 10s was awful compared to how Jr. and Steve Park (even before his season ended prematurely) did that year
The Florida races (both Daytona events and Homestead) were Michael's only highlights of the 2001 season. Ran well at Fall Talladega before his engine gave way too, but other than that, it was a woe-filled year. At least that long winless streak was broken and didn't continue in the #15 car. Now that I think of it, Dale Sr pretty much caused every one of Mikey's wins. He slid up the track under Terry Labonte in the 1996 Winston, allowing Michael to slip by for the win. And his 4 points wins came with Dale's race team.
