It’s noteworthy that Sterling Marlin had an almost opposite season. Although he **accidentally** caused the crash that killed Dale Earnhardt (and I can’t stress **accidentally** enough), he was a consistent top-10 runner and even scored a couple wins.

    • @tyvulpintaur2732

First off, I'm gonna say I like Mikey. Now, the bad stuff. A lot of his issues were getting caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Having said that, I also wonder if the many years he spent in bad equipment (no disrespect to the Wood Brothers) made it difficult for him to adapt to good equipment in 2001? A win at Daytona is pretty easy, hold the hammer down, don't run out of fuel, avoid wrecks, communicate adjustment needs to the team, and hit your marks on pit road if you're in a good car.

Interestingly, if the Series were held in the state of Florida that year, Michael would have had a good season as he won the Daytona 500 and placed second in the Pepsi 400 and 2nd at the Pennzoil Freedom 400 at Homestead. That was pretty much his only good finishes of 2001, in the state of Florida.

The Florida races (both Daytona events and Homestead) were Michael's only highlights of the 2001 season. Ran well at Fall Talladega before his engine gave way too, but other than that, it was a woe-filled year. At least that long winless streak was broken and didn't continue in the #15 car.
Now that I think of it, Dale Sr pretty much caused every one of Mikey's wins. He slid up the track under Terry Labonte in the 1996 Winston, allowing Michael to slip by for the win. And his 4 points wins came with Dale's race team.

I watched the 2001 Daytona 500 live on tv and I can tell you that even 18 years later, the moment that Darrell Waltrip looks back towards turn four after his brother crosses the finish line gives me chills everytime.

Don't mess with NASCARs golden boys! Waltrip brogthers are the worst thing that came to the sport and they still can't figure that out! good video. 0 for 468...what a joke. First at riding Darrels coat tails. I was planning to go to a local auto sports show but I cancelled because Darrel was a "vip" guest.

IF Michael Waltrip had Dale Sr. in his ear and mentoring him, I doubt you see the wrecks and poor finishes this season provided. Michael missed Dale quite a bit and he was setting him up for success, once Dale died it left Mikey drifting around, he won two more races, but he needed someone to tell him to take it easy and keep the car in one piece. Michael was a bit of a seat of his pants driver, he ran marathons which kind of helped his plate racing as both have packs and it takes a lot of strategy to move through them.

Despite the Daytona 500 win, he had an total of 3 top 5s, 3 top 10s, and ended up 24th in points. He was last of the drivers who ran all of the races that won a race. Brett Bodine was the only other driver that ran all the races that finished lower then him in points.
