Bad Seasons: Jeremy Mayfield 2000

- Mayfield was seen as Penske Racing's future at one point. Beginning in 2000 that began to change.

I think the weirdest part of this video was Michael Waltrip avoiding an accident
Surprisingly, Mikey was half-decent at accident avoidance for a while. From 93-98 he really didn't wreck all that often. Then his reaction speed went down, and he was back to his 80's self.

Well that was depressing. I feel bad for the guy, it seems like most of those DNF's were things outside of his control, car failures, or getting taking out by other people. Crazy season
Peter Sospenzo has had interesting wins as a crew chief: Mayfield with that bump on Dale, Nemechek winning a rain shortened race as fans booed and of course, Justin Haley a few months ago.
Peter sounds like Michael Waltrip, in the sense that he only wins in the most chaotic ways possible.

Give a big thanks to Thunder 2004 as well as Motor Racing Network’s Joe Moore and Barney Hall explaining Jeremy Mayfield’s bad season in 2000.
One thing is for sure, Jeremy's 2000 season was the most blatant feast or famine season I've seen. He got 2 wins, had speed pretty much every week, but was hit with a lot of bad luck during races, then he has a big points penalty along with an injury at Indy that made him miss 2 races.
I’d almost forgotten what full grandstands looked like.
Me 2
You won't have to worry about seeing full grandstands much longer. The intense Nascar popularity has caused most tracks to tear down most of their grandstands.
TheMEXICANBEEF Very true. I haven’t been to a race since the 2010 Daytona 500, and that was only because my ex wife got hold of a free ticket so our daughter could gift it to me for Valentines. NASCAR won’t get a dime from me as I lack the dimes to spare. The sport is so different now and the young drivers are so boring. It’s no wonder they can’t bring in new fans and old ones like me don’t go any more; F1 and Indy are better in my eyes.
@@catjudo1 The last race I've attended was the 2017 Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway. That was Dale Jr's last race at Daytona.
Damn, controversy followed Mayfield wherever he went. It's easy to forget the controversial moments that he has at Penske because they were overshadowed by his controversial moment at Evernham in 2006 and his failed drugs test in 2009.
Also:
- 4:25-4:26 151 points?! Ouch. Mind you, if that happened in 2019 he would've been DQ'ed.
and Bobby Labonte would've won that event at Fontana in 2000
What’s Jeremy Mayfield’s thing with failing sample tests?
Gues some people can't be clean lol
In 2009 Brian France screwed him over. Otherwise, i'm not sure.
The story goes that mayfield failed a routine drug test resulting in a suspension. Mayfield disputed it and had anther test done the next day with anther company and he passed. He was given anther test a few weeks later by nascar which he also failed. Again mayfield disputed it. Eventually they went to court where mayfield lost (though the nascar drug tests that he took were reanalyzed and showed a false positive from a combo of Adoral and an allergy medicine). Nascar refused to let mayfield back until he underwent nascar sanctioned treatment. He refused and left nascar permanently. A few years later he got arrested for stealing equipment from the then closing Red Bull racing (who he was working for) when they closed down. Upon the arrest they found meth in his safe (the safe drug he failed his drug tests for). Not long after, his house was foreclosed in due to not paying taxes. He also had to go to court when his 2 dogs attacked a mail lady delivering mail to his house. He now races regional series and his team is under his wife’s name.
Several years later nascar ended it’s contract with their drug testing company due to several false positives and other issues.
@@CamaroAmx A lot like his Nascar career. A lot of really fucked up luck, but a lot of self-inflicted stupidity.

I use to love Mayfield...yet never seen a guy ruin his career the way he did
he had a good start when he joined Penske. in 1998 he & Rusty were consistently at top of the points for the first half of season that would be dominated by Gordon & Martin. at Daytona he had a great chance to steal the 500 win from Earnhardt. it culminated with his 1st win at Pocono overtaking his idol Darrell Waltrip.
Other people from NASCAR were Suspended for using Performance enhancement that wasn't legal in NASCAR
My favorite part was when Jeremy Mayfield had a bad 2000 season
I remember watching that Pocono win live on a Monday after a rain delay when I was 10 years old. Epic
Drug Seasons: Mayfield, Tim Richmond, AJ Allmendinger, Spencer Gallagher
Mayfield was prescribed those pills. It was legal. Ray Evernham blackballed him.

NASCAR thunder 2004 man I love that game. His 2000 season was just weird. He won twice but had so much bad luck
Terry Labonte's 2000 was terrible as well. Broke the Ironman streak that year because of that Pepsi 400 wreck :(
Good Seasons: Jeremy Mayfield 2005
1998 can be considered for a good seasons video, too.
Don't forget 2004.
I would say 2004 was much better of a season than 2005. He led a ton of laps in 2004 and had multiple runner ups
@@andrewvader8986 But he also had more DNF's, his average finish was worse, and mathematically, he would've finished 15th in the final standings without the Chase because of how much he dropped off during the final 10 races. He also finished 1 spot worse in the point standings in 2004 than 2005. I think he had faster cars in 2004 whereas he was a better driver in 2005.
1998 was better than both of those seasons, though. He had more top-10s and top-5s in fewer races, led more laps, finished higher in points, and had a better average finish.
6:34 that's where Terry LaBonte got hurt. And it began his downfall.

"If you ain't living on the edge then you're taking up too much space" - Jeremy Mayfield
His first year at Evernham Motorsports in 2002 was way worse. Especially his last year with Evernham in '06. Mayfield had bad seasons worst than 2000 & other than 2002 & 2006 like 1994, 1995, 1996, 2001, & his last four years in the Cup Series. And that's speaking in terms of his average finish & points finish.
Bad Season: Terry Labonte 2000
Ruined his next 2 Years (2001-02)
That paint scheme was sick.
I usually like your videos, but the first five seconds are instantly incorrect. In 1998, not only did Jeremy Mayfield win his first race (at Pocono over the hottest driver at the time Jeff Gordon), but he led the points for the first (and only) time in his career en route to a 7th place finish in the standings. He was a bona fide title contender undone by bad luck and head injuries.

@@DupontandLowesWarrior True. The later years with Hal Needham were disasterous. The move to Leo Jackson and being teamed with Andy Petree brought him back! And Harry's one of my favorites.

Jeremy Mayfield: i used the intimidation to intimidate the intimidator.
Was the gas a higher octane?
Jeremy Mayfield may not have had great seasons in that car, but that Mobil 1 car looked great with the red white and blue and the Pegasus on the side. A shame he went to victory lane only 3 times in that car.
They popped the 12 for everything, it was a too tall Taurus, they used the wrong fuel... could be worse
I like how NASCAR made it as other teams shammed the 12 team over cheating, when in reality probably just laughed that they got caught.
Remember when nascar games were good? Now NASCAR is so bad that you can’t even get excited about playing a new game. All the greats are gone. The replacements have no personality
Last race in the video at Atlanta 4th caution lap 54 you might get 1 caution minus the 2 for stage ends at Atlanta today in 2019 makes me laugh
3:40 why would you spike gas?
It was a rogue crewmember who admitted to it after, worst part was, it actually caused Mayfield to finish 14th when he had been running 2nd. He complained after the final pit stop when the fuel was added that the engine was bogging down, and Gary Nelson confirmed that the engine would have had to be tuned to accept the additive, so the crew member got him penalized and screwed his Talladega finish all in one shot.
It was pretty bad, but not as bad as his 2009 or 2011.
