My dad finally gets a newer Mac, but he needs his data transferred. Should we do this the easy way or the hard way?
Had a lot of fun making this one.
To those who think and are surprised that Druaga never made a mistake in this video, don't forget about the FireWire 800 port he missed in the 2012 Mac Mini which would probably shorten the video length by a proportion.

I'm still surprised how he managed to miss that, maybe he did it deliberately to gain longer video length (which would require more editing) and to live with what he's known for: screwing things up.

Gigabit vs 800mbps. Clear answer. However the hard disk on the old iMac is probably sata 2, so 600mbps from memory.

I did not visually perceive the firewire 800 port at all, and neither did a handful of people that helped look over the video prior to release. I assume that if you are entirely convinced something isn't there, you just wont see it.
It's ok Druaga1, we love you nonetheless.

I did a fresh install of High Sierra on my 2011 Mac Mini the other day, it seems to run really well on it.
I have a late 2009 MacBook that previously had Maverick but then decided to upgrade to high Sierra and surprisingly it runs buttery smooth. It may also be because it has 8GBs of memory and a 2TB SSD.

Even tho I'm not "an Apple fan" or whatever you'd call me I'd love to get a Mac Mini or basically any "somewhat smooth running" Mac just to explore it a bit, especially when it comes to video editing.
What's the best way to get one cheap? Kinda afraid searching and buying a used one on eBay since I heard a lot of bad stuff happening, as example said person not actually shipping it or shipping something else and so on.

this video is making me realise how much i miss the old font apple used, especially for the large titles like the "transfer information" bit
like it's just bigger regular userfont on the newer one, even in the title?
i miss the really thick loading bar on the older system too. it felt like the Large UI Mode for the system setup had a good idea of how to be bigger.
also: i used ethernet directly plugged in to go from a macbook pro to this imac, years ago! went totally perfectly. i did the same thing with wifi to the new laptop that was replacing it, and it took 18 hours instead of 1.5 hours like wired. i used wifi for the internet so it was a direct connect between the computers. glad it works through a switch too!

Little spoiler. It took 22 hours for me to copy about 100GB through transfer assistant from my 2009 HDD MBP to my 2011 SSD MBP. FML for this :D
I just opened my iTunes library to find that my Enya is also MP3 instead of Apple Lossless despite most of my library being ALAC

Fastest way to transfer would be to take the HDD out of the old machine and plug it directly into the new machine. (Then copy over the motherboard)

Doesn't realize that the 2012 Mac mini has a FireWire 800 port.
If FireWire and thunderbolt are not available you can use a 1 or 2m Ethernet cable data tranfer, no need to go through the network.

If he didn't see the Firewire800, He could have still did a Time Machine transfer. But it's just not his way I guess.
My sister's much newer macbook is actually having the same problem as that old mac.

I haven't yet used the thunderbolt ports on my iMac, I have used the USB obviously, but I have a USB 3 drive, so I am using higher speed peripherals, I think I used gigabit ethernet to transfer data from the 2010 21.5 iMac that I bought to use temporarily and then give to mom and dad.
Mine went through my Airport Extreme router, I have the first of the gigabit ethernet Wireless N ones. I'd get one of the A/C ones but the internet isn't faster than the N, and I don't have any other devices that would benefit from it yet either. Maybe when I get my Mac Pro like yours that I plan on using as my Time Machine backup server for my 2 Macs and mom and dad's iMac, I'll find a PCIe Wireles A/C card for it and then I'll have that so backups go fast, especially the first one.

A used/refurbished i7 quad core 2012 mac mini is actually a good deal, using it's thunderbolt 2 port you CAN attach a eGPU, it just wont be as good as a thunderbolt 3 connection so you'd be better off using a mid range

Surprised you didn't go with Carbon Copy Cloaner and just cloan the entire iMac's drive to use as an external/backup of the files.

When you showed the 4 machines under the desk, I used to have the same case 2nd from the right. It was a Koolance water-cooled version. I think they're lian-li cases? lol
You see that FW800 port on the Mac mini? Apparently not!
pls repair the 2007 imac... its a cool machine, and probably only needs the cooler cleaned and the thermal compound redone :) maybe if it has a thermal pad on the GPU you can also improve its temps by doing the copper shim mod (use thermal grease and a thin copper shim instead of the shitty thermal pad)
