  • Hi folks, Time for my follow up video on the Eastman T59/v
So despite this arriving to me with issues unseen in other Eastman guitars I knew It would be worth sticking out. And the guitar fought me for a short time (cheeky thing!) but it is now been settling in lovely and giving me exactly what I hoped it would based on my experience and thoughts with Eastman before this one.

Also, in the background of today was using the Marshall studio Jubilee. I have found myself very much so enjoying this amplifier, BUT the Katana hasn't been side lined by it at all. Im still using it maybe even a little more so.... make of that what you will haha!
One of the earlier goals this year is to upgrade my Mic preamps so when I use an amp over software you get a better sound. It's been annoying me for some time that my recordings are never quite accurate but if you've been here since the start - youll know ive always worked to make improvements and thats certainly the next one. Thanks for watching!

Nice playing as always 👍 I have a T486 Goldburst which I like a lot, but did need a lot of setup as it had some uneven frets. My experience here in Australia is the Eastmans can need a setup; they don’t have a distribution centre in Australia so come to shops direct from the factory. I’ve had same experience with their flat top acoustics. A couple also had neck lifting issues. I did an in depth video on my experience with the T486 here

Thanks for the update, always interesting to see how things work out after the honeymoon period.
I have several Eastman guitars and none have had any issues. I've upgraded tuners to Gotoh lockers and one guitar has Gibson 490 pickups but that's just coz I can't help myself (and they sound superb btw). I'm going to have to sell a couple as I've got carried away, but only Eastman has ever done that to me. As far as I can tell, they haven't made a bad guitar or even average, all Eastmans are quality.

I put those locking tuners on my sb59 too. This "V" variant the tuners seems to be better then the normal pingwell ones. But yeh man its crazy how good they are.

I've had a T64/TV for just over a month. It was shipped to me (in Canada) from Peach Guitars. I've had the same experience as you describe in which the guitar has needed to "settle in" or get used to the environment and my playing style. It's the one and only guitar I've owned with a Bigsby, so I thought it might have had something to do with that. But now that it is staying in tune and is perfectly intonated I can't put it down! All of my other guitars and my entire pedal board are collecting dust. This guitar straight into an amp (Vox AC15 or Traynor YCV40) is sublime.
That being said, and at the risk of seeming a tad neurotic (apologies for the ensuing essay), there are a few reasons to nitpick the guitar - none of which are perhaps quite as serious as the issues you encountered with the nut and over-rounding of the fret ends on the treble side, but they do seem significant enough to mention for any prospective Eastman guitar buyers out there who might be expecting perfection from a not-so-inexpensive instrument they purchase online.
    1. The multi-line purfling/binding was not installed evenly along the bass side of the neck. The three lines that run along the binding kind of look like a wave. It's bothersome that the binding is perfectly even everywhere else on the guitar; the only area it is imperfect is precisely the area within view while playing.
    2. On the back of the guitar, there is a small area where the bottom of the binding meets the guitar body in one of the cutaways that either the finish was not applied or there was a blemish in either the maple laminate or binding that wasn't repaired. It's only half a centimetre wide, but because it looks like a sliver of unfinished maple it really stands out from the colour of the Classic finish.
    3. Similar to gripes #1 and #2, the area of the guitar where the neck joins the body on the bass side - again, in view while playing - was not finished well. And since the neck joins the body at the 16th fret on the T64, the area is much more conspicuous that it would be on a T59. Frustratingly, the finish on the treble side along the neck/body joint is flawless.
    4. The bridge pickup tone control is very stiff/scratchy within the 7-10 range of the pot, whereas the other three pots are as smooth as silk. This has no effect on the range of the pot or of tone tone of the guitar, it's just another cosmetic/QC issue.
    5. And finally, the biggest shock to me is that the pieces of maple used for the three-piece neck were either not planed perfectly flat or they were not joined together correctly because there is a 5cm line down one of joints on the back of the neck with a gap about 1mm wide. The finish has of course filled this gap so it's not something that can be felt, but like the other points mentioned above it stands out visually.
I wanted to take the time to write this because I appreciate your channel and the Eastman reviews you have done. Like a lot of people, I'm sure, I have been led to believe that Eastman's quality and craftsmanship is second to none - perhaps only to Gibson's Murphy Lab. The comparisons with Gibson (which Eastman understandably can't seem to get away from) tend to put Eastman guitars on par with or even above the Gibson Custom Shop, models that are triple the cost of a comparable Eastman.
When I saw the T64/TV listed on Peach Guitars' website in the new Truetone Vintage Gloss finish without any of the "relic'ing," I felt an overwhelming urge to buy the guitar, and I did. Of the five "defects" listed above, only one of them is visible in the photos of the guitar Peach provided: #2, the very small, unfinished sliver on the back of the guitar body. In hindsight I wish I had taken the time to ask a few more questions and request a few more photos from different angles in natural lighting; I worried that someone else would buy the guitar because it has an absolutely stunning plain maple top and back so I made the impulsive decision to buy it with no questions asked. When 99/100 reviews and RUclips comments vouch for Eastman's impressive craftsmanship I didn't believe that I had anything to worry about.
So are the issues with my guitar an anomaly for the brand, or are the cosmetic flaws all within a reasonable tolerance for a hand-crafted instrument? I'd like to believe that it is the latter. Now I'm at exactly one month and one day with the T64/TV, and the more I play it the less I pay attention to the imperfections and the more I marvel at the tone. The tone is no doubt a sum of all of the parts of the guitar, from the fully hollow construction to the maple neck and body to the Lollar P90 pickups and all of the electronics and the Bigsby vibrato. I've never played a guitar that felt so alive. It's almost shocking. I think this is due to the guitar being perfectly intonated, and I mean perfectly. But the pickups... Wow. The output of every string across every fret is absolutely balanced and unbelievably clear; the dynamic range just with picking/strumming intensity is tremendous - and this doesn't yet account for the wealth of tones afforded by the volume and tone pots.
After about 20 years of playing I thought I had my "dream" tone with a Strat or SG running through tone-shaping pedals (compression, boost, various overdrives and fuzz), but now in comparison that all sounds like a heavy blanket is smothering the amp. It's funny how sound can have that effect on us, like you don't know what frequencies you're missing until you hear them, and once you do there's no going back. It's what keeps us forever searching for our own six-stringed holy grail. And I've found mine, imperfections be damned.

Firstly thanks for sharing your thoughts here. Secondly - the T64 is secretly my favourite of the bunch and I spent most of this afternoon playing my friends one haha!
As for the QC issues you’ve experienced. I think the main worry is there has been a significant change in the production time since the recent change with not doing to aged varnish finish - i did mention this topic only briefly on my most recent eastman video but didnt want to bash it too much and be “that guy”.
So the number of QC niggles experienced from you on the newer run models does add to my concern - but all that said it does seem the true character of the T64 has come through regardless and thats great to hear.

@@Paul-D I ended up double-dipping and shared my post on the Eastman Guitar Fans guitar forum. If you're on that forum, you could see photographs of everything I detailed above. The title of the post is "Eastman T64/TV - Finish Flaws?"
It does appear that there were some corners cut in the finishing of my guitar, areas that I would personally give a little more attention to if I were in the Eastman workshop. The Truetone gloss on my guitar does seem like a very thin finish, and unless you look closely and scrutinize every detail there isn't much to complain about. Still, I don't think this is what one would expect to see from a (1700 pound / 2800 CAD) guitar.
I can't compare it to the antique varnish as I haven't yet been able to see/feel a guitar with this finish in person. I never liked the look of Eastman's relic'ing and I wasn't too fond of the idea of the antique varnish being so thin that it would scratch/wear quickly, so the non-relic'ed Truetone gloss is something I was delighted to see Eastman offer. I only wish there was that little bit more attention to detail so that - as a first-time Eastman buyer - I didn't have this nagging feeling of buyer's remorse in the back of my mind.

It was a basic, plain cherry, matt finish one and it was £2.5k. I'm not knocking Gibson by any means but I couldn't justify that price personally now that I've got the Eastman.

@@Paul-D I'm guessing you're less likely to have a full hollow body than a LP-alike so I'd go for the T64/v. They're not an 'only' guitar - the upper fret access is limited and there are other restrictions, but if you have a few things already then it's something unique and different that you might not have covered. The Lollar P90s are incredible and with the lightweight body you just feel like you've got something ready to roar and go a bit crazy, in a good way. Sort of feels like a fun throw around guitar but has some serious rock noise. I think the bridge pup on it is the best I've heard, and I had a Tele with custom shop vintage pups in it. I have a 335 and the T64/v is very different from it other than shape. I'm one of those people that's sceptical about anything beyond pups mattering much in terms of tone but the hollow body does something and the pickups are incredible.
