DPA 2017 v Rycote HC22 - Hollywood stars? The new 2017 is making waves but is the HC22 the bargain?

  • DPA is one of the biggest players in the location gun mic market. Their 4017 is on set for many a Hollywood blockbuster. And now there's a new addition at a more affordable price. But Rycote's windshields are also a staple of location work and now they have microphones to match. They duke out it in a first look video. Thanks to Martyn at soundkit.co.uk for the loan of the microphones.

I missed this one initially Alistair, but here I am listening a month down the track and noting no one has piped up declaring their own genius in terms of expertise around the engineering of interference tubes. Interesting eh?! DPA, Senny, Rycote, Schoeps, blah blah blah, they all tout their own special sauce with the interference tubes… but how much exactly is in it? I would love to hear more about it if you could track someone down, investigative reporting style, to talk about it! On a separate note: If I lived in the UK I’d post you my 4017B to use in a test but I’d fret too much posting from Australia.

Hi - great stuff and a timely reminder I need to do a couple more HC22 videos. There is a wonderful story of the Sennheiser engineers demoing the prototype of the 416 to German TV sound guys and getting some complaints that the mic was too tight. At which point the senior engineer steps up flourishing a hack saw and asks how much looser would you like it and saws the end of the tube off! On reflection surely that can't be true unless Sennheiser engineers carried hacksaws to prototype showings... but maybe they did. I think we all understand Young's slits and how they help cancellation but the devil is in the detail and nobody wants to tell us the detail! John Willet of Sound-Link is the Gefell distributer in the UK but was for many years Mr. Sennheiser - I'll ask him. Thanks for such kind thoughts in regard to your 4017B, you're a better man than I. If I had one I would not be thinking of posting it anywhere! What did you have in the kit before hte 4017? Ta like, ppm6.

Hello there, i am new to your channel but already appreciate your videos very much!!!! I have a question which is not about this specific video but i am going to ask it anyway!! Do you happen to know a way to transfer audio inside of a wireless network. To be more precise, i own three audio devices and i want their audio output to be transferred approximately 80km far? The audio devices have a 3.5mm jack and although in the current state i am able to remote control them, I have no idea how to listen to them.
Thanks in advance!! Greetings from Greece!

Hi Kostas - audio over IP is well established but your situation seems a challenge. I have never used this but it's free so worth a try -
      www.sonobus.net
      Note their words about wifi...
Although it will work with WiFi, the added network jitter and packet loss will require you to use a bigger jitter buffer to maintain a quality audio signal, which results in higher latencies.
Let me know how it goes. Ta like, ppm6.tv

@@ppmtv-qh9qk Hello again thanks a lot for the answer, turned out to be pretty helpful. Although i believe it would be much cost-efficient if i there was a single device (not a pc), like a switch, that could get my audio through my IP network. Any thoughts on that??

When you say 'through the network' what do you mean by that? I didn't look that closely at the Sonobus features. I also forgot to mention Voicemeeter from VB, been around a while :-
      vb-audio.com/Voicemeeter/vban.htm
But this is also a local network solution and I wonder if that is the limitation you are trying to overcome. Ta like, ppm6.
