You're too far from the microphone. Jfc, 2 to 6 inches and rarely with certain mics you can push it to a foot if your room is treated. Your room is not treated, you should be closer than normal to cut out the reverb. All I hear is the room. No one even knows what these mics sound like watching your videos, because people are just hearing the reverberation in that room.

Hi Hendrik, without seeing the lay out I can only give general advice. The CM4 is excellent though maybe not as robust as an sE8. Both are cardioids. Are you planning stereo streaming - you can experiment with coincident and maybe ORTF mic placement. Spaced omnis are another option - there is an omni capsule for the sE8 which I don't have and Line Audio make an omni version of the cm4 - which might be the CM2. Depending on your approach omnis may be less useful for other things, certainly any time you want directionality. Let me know how you get on. Ta like, ppm6.

I'm going to say that their DAC performance will be close enough not to be audibly different. But you may have better ears than me! Great review. For people intending to use it for live sound, i strongly advise against it, mostly because the remote control software (UC) has many shortcomings (especially compared to the Behringer/Midas XM32 consoles equivalent), and some are just way too serious for professional use : - the PEQ section is way too small - there is no offline editor - not enough tap point options for sends to busses : for instance you can't have it post EQ but pre compressor/limiter, or you can't have it post gate but pre EQ/comp/limiter. This really sucks if you're using the console for both FOH and MON at the same time. The Behringer/Midas XM32 is way better than this.

Sorry for the slow reply Jonathan. The answer is I don't know! What have you got in the cupboard at the moment? My experience with the 451 (CK1 capsule) is limited to the classic made in Austria mics from my BBC days. Very flat, very flexible - a lot of options - very reliable - terrible threads on the capsules, easy to cross thread. Truth is they were dogs body mics, we used them on everything and they got the job done. What the new ones are like I don't know but a second hand one is very likely to be very well used and I would be cautious. We didn't have any C28s, though we did have a couple of C12s that no one used. From what I see C28s are very expensive - can you still get the tubes? Again I would be cautious. Ive used AKG C480B mics for years now. We have 3 of them for multiple mic setups for interior and exterior. The price point and performance meant we have multiples of these and we use the CK69 instead of the go to MK416. Love the sound and low noise floor is amazing. We have CK61 and Ck63 capsules too as well as several A61 90 degree adapters. In addition we have just sourced 4x VR61 extensions and restored them for use with C460 mic pre's which also run our Ck3x and Ck1x mic capsules with hot wires, similar to Schoeps. All our mics are now AKG from 4x C214 studio mics and 4x AKG c1000s MKIV for interviews with built in phantom power if required. We use our AKG mics for many productions for Broadcast, features, corporate, radio, podcasts and studio work. We have used many other brands including recently we tried Neumann TLM103 which we expected to be AKG C214 killer. It wasn't. It was hyper sensitive and needed EQ'ing and sent it back. The C214's will be staying. When we have sound ops on a shoot using our AKG mics, especially the C480B's, they are blown away and often ditch their mix pre and go straight into the recorder. I know the BBC and other broadcasters use the C480B mics and were recommended by their sound supervisor. Our AKG mic family are what we call 'mics for life'. Interesting video, thank you.

So interesting to hear confirmation of my feelings about the Blueline series. It’s as though they sound like nothing. I’ve had 2 pair for well over 25yrs with Omni, hyperC, & cardiod capsules. When comparing them with other mics, they tend to lose out because they just don’t have much personality or coloration. Ultimately, I guess that’s why I end up utilizing them quite a bit, especially in symphonic settings, live chamber, or jazz musical settings. I find them ultimately to be very neutral and true without adding anything extra that you need to spend time in post taming. My Schoeps get used for creating that magical atmospheric quality, but the AKG blueline work very well especially if I plan on adding reverb or other efx.

Well that's a good question... First, do tell what is a voice mic? Second My voice is an instrument. Third I've never bought the instrument/voice distinction. Is the 451 and instrument mic or a voice mic, or the 201 or the Schoeps MK4, or the Sennheiser MKH40.... I think the distinction is strongest in music studios where generally vocals are recorded with LDCs and instruments are often recorded with SDCs, but even there the distinction is easily blurs. U87s for overheads. 414 on vocals and guitar cabs. Actually 414s and SM57s for guitar cabs. Location speech mics are almost universally SDCs. Ta like, ppm6.

MK4 sounds great, but that mains buzz is terrible.

Thanks for dropping by - one of the great joys of broadcast engineering is being able to utter the immortal phrase - 'It's all right leaving me.' You may pick up the gentle breeze of the PC fan but as far as terrible mains buzz goes - It's all right leaving me. Ta like, ppm6.
