I found it a bit of a challenge to compare this trio but I feel the Beyer is the cleanest and the one I probably wouldn't choose here is the sE8.

Well I'm glad there's some love for the Beyer - I took it on the first gig without reading the review in SOS - which highlighted its extreme sensitivity to wind noise and popping. Ruined my recording. I should do a 'pop off' between this and the 184. The Hakan does a good job of keeping things on the safe side here.

The differences seem extremely subtle. I'm listening on a pair of Sony MDR7506 headphones. To me the Lewitt seems to have a very slightly 'fuller' sound but it's really quite subjective - and in terms of clarity of voice for even commercial voice-over work I would probably use any of the three! They can always be subtly tweaked with a little EQ after the event. All of them also seem very good on the noise front. I had to listen quite a few times as I started to get distracted by the content - C.S. Lewis is a great writer and intellectual. Some of his academic work is mind-blowing!

Thanks for dropping and thanks for the careful listening. I think the Lewitt has the lowest spec for noise but to be honest it wouldn't be a problem unless you were trying to record something very, very quiet! My instinct is to downgrade the MCE 93, but mainly because of its terrible proneness to popping, but the Hakan Popkiller does a good job here. Finally I think you are dead right, none of these are expensive and all are probably good enough. Agree about CSL btw. Ta like, ppm6.
