I own a 2017, and have had it in action the last week.. It is by far a better choice to the mkh416. It has endured rain, snow, harsh handling and it just sounds sooo awesome. Still like the 416, but this is just better for a relatively cheap microphone..
Hello, could you elaborate, better how? I actually need to buy a new mic and I found a brand new mkh416 for 790 euro and a dpa 2017 for 930 euro. Would you go for the dpa even tho is 140 more expensive?
Hey Curtis, long time fan. I’m currently using a Sony ECM-XM1 for recording some local metal bands live in small venues. I know that ideally I’d plug in my Zoom F3 into the sound board but sometimes depending on the venue this isn’t always an option and/or the audio clips because of the sound guy. The SPL on the little Sony mic is around 128-130 or so, and I’m suffering a lot audio wise as my on camera audio, even 10 feet from the band on an FX6 is terrible. Would something like the 2017 be a good option due to the higher SPL? If not, is there another good option?
Considering whether I'll get rid of a 4017b and getting a 2017 if it's going to be more directional and can be used side by side still. Would be handy to have the 2017 for the rougher on the hoof stuff. I do have an MKH70 but obviously it's a bit chunky these days. Will wait for the sound test, have been waiting for something like this as found the DPA launch a bit wishy washy in terms of describing it. Thanks very much!
For practical purposes, I wouldn't say the 2017 is more directional. If you compare the polar graphs, the low frequency rear lobe on the 4017 is a little wider, but it's tough to hear much difference in listening to practical samples.
I'd imagine it will sound like rain. However, Foley is an art and sometimes you may prefer to use the sound of frying bacon for rain. That's a subjective choice.
Thanks very much for the detailed answer to my question. Exactly what I needed! Cheers from Adelaide, Australia 😃
Thanks, Andrew! Hope you're doing well.

Glad to hear it is working out for you!

2017: What about recording rain? Does it sound like rain, or do you need to foley in frying bacon?
It sounds like rain...
