  • The #DarkAge of #Battletech would see a series of sometimes strange, and sometimes fantastic #Battlemechs emerge. Inside of the #DraconisCombine, or #HouseKurita, a new Light-mech would be developed that is dangerous, and extremely utility driven.
A replacement for the aging #Panther, in this video we are going to go over the #PhoenixHawk L, the lighter offspring of the medium-mech design.

Also remaking the Panther for the Dark Age? Take a basic 9R, drop a 175 XL engine in. Upgrades movement to 5/8 and saves 1.5 tons. Spend 0.5 tons to bring jump to 5. Remove 3 heat sinks, upgrade remaining 10 to double heat sinks. Remove PPC, Replace PPC with 2 Large Lasers. Add 1 ton of armor. For a variant of this variant remove the SRM-4 and ammo and replace with 3 medium lasers in the CT. This make this new Panther still a soldier mech, but its in-line with other light soldier mechs in the Dark Age.

This is an... interesting take on the Pheloenix Hawk, to say the least. Not as batshit crazy ad the gloriously insane Phoenix Hawk IIc, but still one I find to be odd. I get the Combine wanted a light mech to replace another light mech... but I have to wonder why they didn't just upscale a Stinger or Wasp then. Oh well, interesting nonetheless.
Also, I know it's lighter thanks to a lot of weight saving tech, but I can help but think that the biggest factor in making it lighter was it having an arm torn off and having a small weapon pod slapped on the stub. The poor sealing quirk isn't helping alleviate that thought lol.

  • @Chris_Sizemore

My main thought about the Phoenix Hawk L is... it deserves a different name. This mech doesn't need to borrow a good reputation from a 45 ton mech. It can definitely stand on its own merits. Other than sharing the same movement profile, it shares very little with its namesake. The L is a decent mech, but honestly expensive for what is suppose to be a main line mech. All that weight saving components hit the pocketbook (and BV) and it all adds up.

Forgot to leave a comment the first time. 😝 This was a great video, very informative. It's proof that dark Age 'mechs can kick butt with new-gen tech upgrades. The Old Reliable Medium got re-made and re-branded as a burly and swift Light 'mech. The new P-Hawk is a great enemy 'mech hunter that can shoot its way through the era-fashionable combined force mini-armies to get to the enemy 'mech or 'mechs and take them down swiftly! If everything goes well, the Dracs get to capture some 'mechs in decent shape. If not, well, it'll be a quick kill nonetheless! If Katana Tormak had been given a dozen of these in 3132, she could've cleaned house on ROTS & Swordsworn alike. Tornaga's victories over determined FedSuns mechwarriors become a lot easier to understand once a player recognizes his 'mech battalions had some of these bad boys distributed to trustworthy pilots.

I have always loved the Phoenix Hawk. Just a bad ass look and with a nice set of teeth too!
I was wondering if an up-scaled model might be possible.
Up tonnage to 55 from 45 to keep it as a Medium category, but give it some more weight to play with.
    Roll: Light Hunter, and Scout
    Use all the latest tech
Armament: 2 ER Large Lasers (Left an right arms), 3 Medium Pulse Lasers (Left and right arms, center torso), 2 ER Small Lasers (Head)
Mobility: Jump Jets paired with a Partial Wing System
I'm aware that a a lot of yo are provably thinking Gundum instead of Mech at this point, but the OG Phoenix Hawk dose have that kind of vibe. I just liked the idea of pushing the design even more in that direction So I figured that with new tech it might be possible.

Personally, to upgrade the Panther, I would've gone bigger Light Engine, MML 5, and dual Light PPCs with one equipped with a capacitor. I will definitely be working out how to do that.
Edit: Alright, I've tinkered and toiled and here it is.
    Panther "Hreda"
    Engine: XL 175
    Gyro: Standard
Cockpit: Standard w/ Full Head Ejection System
    Structure: Standard
    Armor: 6.5T Ferro-Fibrous
    Movement: 5/8/4
    Heat Sinks: 10 (20)
    Weapons & Equipment:
    CASE II (LT)
1 Light PPC w/ Capacitor (RA)
    1 ER Medium Laser (RA)
    1 Light PPC (CT)
    1 MML5 (RT)
    1T LRM Ammo (LT)
    1T SRM Ammo (LT)
    1 ER Small Laser (HD)
    4 Standard Jump Jets
    ---------------------
I tinkered a lot with engines, structures, and armor, but finally decided that a Panther ain't a Panther at 6/9 movement. I considered Composite structure, but there's enough expensive equipment on board as is. I might swap it out anyway and use that weight for more armor or a LFE for better survivability. Customizing light 'mechs is so much fun because you're so restricted by weight and you have to get inventive with your solutions.

But he was not looking at his Phoenix Hawk as he usually did he saw the Mech as a mountain of metal, 45 tons of battle platform. Not this time. As he walked towards it across the field a new vision grafted itself to his vision. His Battle mech he realized was like a suit of armor worn by Arthur's Knights - Paul Masters after reading Mallorys story about King Arthur from Ideal War.

    Hey there Red.
I never used the Phoenix Hawk L, nor faced it on the tabletops. But I did watch your video and, of course, my 'itch' to fiddle around with it a bit took hold.
So, I took the PHX-11K2 variant and did the following:
Removed the MML-3 and its ammo. In its place, I mounted 5 MGs and an MG Array in the Left Arm, with a Half Ton of Ammo in the Left Torso (where the CASE is). I left the Coolant Pod in place, since it is possible to fire the Snub-Nosed PPC, both ER-Medium Lasers, and Jump, and exceed the 'heat delta' of the installed heat sinks. The 10 IS-DSHS can 'only' cool 20 heat, and with the above weapons use and jumping, the 'heat delta' would be 26. Using the Coolant Pod allows the heat sinks to outperform their 'normal' cooling rate by 50%, so a 'heat delta' of 30 cooling.
Since the MGs generate no heat, it is not an 'issue', and with the MG Array, four of the five MGs will fire upon one target with one roll of the dice. Please note that a 6th MG could be installed instead. I don't know about you, but if I were infantry, I would be terrified of that much firepower pointed in my direction!
All of this, without changing the 'essential' design.
I just don't see the validity, or usefulness, of the MML-3 and its ammo. Yes, the MML-3 can fire LRMs as well as SRMs, but why would you NEED 3 missiles to 'enhance' your attack? This Mech was meant to be a 'cheap' to build, and easy to repair machine of war. The MML-3 just adds weight, and is a possible vulnerability. At least the MGs, all 6 of them, would be a 'force multiplier' when dealing with Infantry and Battle Armor. Heck, even Proto-Mechs would be wary of that many MGs.
So, my conclusion is that the altered design (the 6MG variant), which I designate as the PHX-11K3, is a 'better' design. Feel free to disagree, if you wish.

Several of the Clans actually merged with their Inner Sphere holdings both militarily and politically, adapting to survive.
Ghost Bear being one of the first as they merged with the FRR to become the Ghost Bear Dominion, and then continued to adapt and mesh the cultures to become the Rasalhague Dominion. Even in the IlClan era though, there are some partisans who think the Dominion should be out conquering instead of being content with what they have, I believe the book Dominions Divided cover that, and I am pretty sure Red has a video touching on it.
Clan Snow Raven did something similar with the Outworlds Alliance to become the Raven Alliance.

Pretty sure it is Roc, as he specifically says "no, not the protomech", also given how it looks in the art he shows for it, it has wing like protrusions on the back and appears to be a heavy or assault mech, another hint is that he designed it to be a Marik mech.
Basically all of that is one giant nod to the mythological Roc

ah the combine place where they make pretty good mechs (with the exception of the OG dragon which is at best meh) but often meh tacticians and strategists. oh and terrible human rights. albeit when the DCMS has worthy leaders is a horrific foe to face. Mind you not sure why one would buy this design given it has a XL engine which means one can buy like 1.5 upgraded non XL phoneix hawks

C-bill costs don't really work as well, or aren't as accurate, after the 31st century to be fair. The C-bill cost system was meant for balance in the 90's and ceased really being truly functional once you hit the Dark Age.

"Fenikkusu" (フェニックス) would be better read like "fenix" or "fenixu" than "fennykoosoo." Yeah it's still not 100% accurate but it's easier to explain without getting deep into Japanese pronunciation.

@@BigRed40TECH agree to disagree. I liked those novels, but once they did the time skip and the Republic of the Sphere, it basically killed off everything I enjoyed about the Battletech universe.

I think the FCCW stretched logic to such a strain that even the Dark Age looks reasonable by comparison. It's just different tastes. I'd rather read something new, even if its imperfect, then read through a terrible, awfully paced nonsense filled series of books with the worst ending in Battletech history on every level.
Ironically, how bad the FCCW is, made me more forgiving to Dark Age. lmao

@@BigRed40TECH I think that would be an interesting video topic (a comparison between the two). Personally, I saw a lot of the FCCW books as filler, but I enjoyed them as further explorations of the conflict.
I enjoyed the final battles, but, in retrospect last space battle was too close to the Holdo maneuver. However, I didn't enjoy the resolution to the storyline. That's honestly probably why I don't like what came afterwards.
