  • Well, it's time to advanced my rating videos while I worked on the #WarhammerIIC video over the next month. In this case, we're going to examine my favourite 10 #Mercenaries from the #InnerSphere and I guess the #Clans. Heck, one is even a #Comstar and #WordofBlake alligned unit even.
    So, here we go!
One track in this was provided by ‪@MarikaSchanz‬ , who made the "Dark Western Volume 1" track, which I bought the limited license to use in this video. It's some great music, everyone should check it out.

Approaching the in game Universe as a random Merc_001 is fun. I just like to see it from the point of view of a Merc fighting to avoiding bankruptcy as hard, or harder than try to avoid Clan ER PPC' s and Gauss rounds in general to the face.

@@kevinmulkey9774 To me, "Mercenary" is just a fancy term for me to field whatever I want. A Clan mech in a lance of IS mechs? I call that salvage. A single Celestial? I call that spite, because I like to use a certain faction's exclusive mech against them to spite the fanboys.
And yeah, the second obvious reason is I like to avoid faction politics and fanboyism (I'm looking at you, House Davion fanboys).

Yup! Loved my merc company, even if I decided to narratively dissolve them in the Alpha Strike campaign. I figured it would be hard to bounce back from a bad contact, that they still completed, with only 2 infantry and one battle armor section remaining. That campaign some random at the FLGS dragged me into is what sold me on tabletop Battletech.

Workshopping an OC mercenary command is always a fun exercise. How do they fight? Where do they fight? Why do they fight? What flavor of big stompy, rolly and/or floaty death machines do they favor as they fight? There's so much enjoyment to be had in creating and fleshing out your own little (or big) band of soldiers-for-hire.

I was always a fan of the Eridani Light Horse. Back in the day one of the “still sticks with me 35 years later” moments playing battle tech was when my rookie unit that barely survived the opening salvos of the fourth succession war were invited to join in their ceremony on Exodus Day after rescuing some Eridanis captured by the Capellans.

Me too. My introduction to Battletech was my dad showing me MechWarrior 3 as a kid where you play as an Eridani Light Horse MechWarrior participating in Operation Damocles against Smoke Jaguar. Then, in the Pirate’s Moon expansion pack, your mission is dealing with pirates on a crappy middle-of-nowhere moon. Lol

I'm an outlier here but the 17th Recon Regiment (Commancheros Cabelleros) was always a unit that just resonated with me. The mix of people, cultures, ideologies that all hated each other but loved eachother at the same time...but if you messed with them don't expect them to back down from a fight. The integration of not mech based forces into their novel arch's was also a nice touch and just added some spice to their story.

    • @Dang_Near_Fed_Up
      @Dang_Near_Fed_Up 5 месяцев назад

I am still trying to get through the Cabelleros books, I just can't get into the writing style for some reason. But the unit seems to be on the ragged edge of falling apart due to internal conflict, so much so that I don't find them particularly appealing.
As a veteran I can attest to the effect of shared endured hardships forming a galvanized unit that will do amazing things to help one another, and one of the first things to go OUT is those internal conflicts. How a unit can endure with so much internal friction just does not ring true.

I like the 21st Centauri Lancers. They are a merc unit that goes through some serious turmoil in the 3050’s when the WoB hold them hostage as the former masqueraded as them on Terra, and when they got bombed out on Tukayyid in the late 3060’s (a big reason for me not liking the Blakist era personally. Warships…ugh). I love that the Killer Bees - another merc unit I’m fond of - end up being a part of their rebuilding forces. I’m happy they’ve been “reactivated” as a separate command to the 21st Centauri while operating in the Hinterlands, thanks to Thos Cardella’s efforts (a character from clickytech I am happy is still around).
The other is Tooth of Ymir. They are neither the best, nor the worst. They have access to fun tech later in the setting, and also have that ridiculous Franken-Annihilator called “Schwere Gustav”, I believe named after the huge WWII railroad delivered artillery cannon.

They were formed as a side effect of the Tamar Pact resurgence, the first book with their formation and them literally building their first lance of mechs out of a scrapyard is FANTASTIC, it’s just a very fun flavorful unit.

I get the rage after the whole Bromhead Massacre, but it wasn't satiated in the least after they exterminated the people responsible for that atrocity, and they went on to become one of the only factions that ever unleashed nuclear weapons in murderous rage, and not have every other faction call for their deaths as a consequence. If you know anything about the the lore of Battletech, you KNOW that's a big deal.

Another great video! I recently learned about the Heart of Blake thanks to Mechfrog, and as a mainly merc fan, and a fan of Blakist factions, i think they freaking rock. The Wolf's Dragoons are my favorite mercenary faction, but there are so many good ones. Another of my favorites is Ace Darwin's Whippits, yes, entirely for the Pink Panther reference... Also i just think its fun that every mission you're getting a randomized mercenary command. Its great. I also love the Lone Wolves for their unorthodox command structure, or lack thereof. If you choose to work, you get paid, if you choose not to get paid, you dont have to fight. Love me the lone wolves because they're a bunch of small mercs in a trench coat 😂. And i love thay they were helping out my favorite clan, Jade Falcon, in the hinterlands.

Sure factions are going to have highs and lows and it's all because of how they are written every time by a different writer. The biggest highlight them was basically dipping out of Marik territory to face the Clanners that were coming, only for Thomas Marik to throw a fit.

I have quite a few but I've always wanted to field a small command called" Battle Magic," it is actually the subordinate mech command for a group called "Mech Magic." A elite group if master rated battlemech technicians specializing in customization and advanced weapons installation and repair. They're professionalism earned them the patronage of the Wolf's Dragoons on outreach before that world was nuked by the WOB. They were taught by Dragoon techs not only on how to install/replace clan tech equipment but also on how to actually repair this class of gear, so there services I would imagine was in high demand by other mercenaries that could afford their services. Battle Magic was used for raids to aquire high tech weapons and equipment for the use of their customers. When not on missions the mechs parade colors were black and white and kept in pristine condition and cleanliness so the command can show off examples of Mech Magic's work to potential clients.

My personal favorites are 5; the Wolf's Dragoons, which is Clan Wolf if the personal story writing wasn't so frustrating; 4: Northwind Highlanders because I love the Highlander mech, how unashamedly Scottish they are, and I liked their interaction with the RotS up until the end; 3: Lexington Combat Group, I stumbled on them on Camospecs and fell in love with their red black and white aesthetic, then read their background and how they were more democratic in promotions, they share my love of combined arms, and were absorbed by the AFFS until being the first group to break from their unit to accept the Suns' landed mercenary contract to be reborn in the IlClan Era, 2: Hansen's Roughriders, Big Red just goes into it perfectly, and 1: The Eridani Light Horse, which I can go on and on about why I love them and how important they are to my connection to Battletech as being the first little cardboard square I picked out when my father was teaching me to play the game.

Oh man, Mercs are my bread and butter of the setting. I love a lot of em, from Carlyle's Commandos as my first impression of the setting and business to the adorable Fox Patrol. I've even made few of my own with distinct backstories from one another, bored corpo forms his own unit, former clanners to periphery yeomen, and even Cappellan defectors. But I always fall back to the Wolf's Dragoons.
Super hipster choice lol, but I've never read about such a large and decorated unit with such a long history exploits. Jaime Wolf is also among my favorite characters in the setting and his relationship with Tetsuhara is some of the most interesting I've seen in the setting. I suppose there's a reason why they hold such a legendary status both in and out of the universe

Definitely the "Raging Horde". I think what Dark Age and IlClan really gifted us is a merge of Clans and IS, that first needed to have a bit of spice and flexibility in their lore. Now, when "they are a part of IS" -- it is not that difficult to imagine a clan-origin merc command. And "Raging Horde", from it's name to it's concept of elemental-only merc unit just distills is to the core.

Love the list! Hansen's Roughriders are also my favorite. I always like that they were a Merc group that focused on heavier mechs and tanks and worked as combined arms. I enjoy their color scheme, and their emblem is pretty great too. It was cool to see someone decisively beat the Dragoons back when they were pretty unstoppable as well. As a big fan of the Taurians I really like the story between the Roughriders and Concordat as well.
The Dragoons are great also. I like that they are the mercenary poster faction for the game, but that they are believable and have their highs and lows.
I'll have to hunt down more content on the Rangers, I was always interested in them and wanted to read more but never have gotten around to it.

Mercenaries will always have a special place in the community; they are the underdogs, the dark horses, the well-oiled private companies and the down-on-their-luck survivors of disastrous campaigns, encompassing both the professionnals with long line of traditions and the scums of the earth that plunders just to make it. Plus, mercenaries can take on and do plenty of diverse jobs that the regular armies won't bother doing.
Great choice on the mercenary units, with good points.

My favourite Mercs are the nik's cavalier and whatever you as the player gave to specter's company from both mechwarrior 4 & 5.
Specter's company for being my first introduction to the franchise, and the at times campy lines, especially fights that involved the clanners. Jade falcons trial of possession and clan wolf trial of position are definite highlights.
Nik's cavalier would be for the sandbox nature of mechwarrior 5 with an unhealthy amount of mods. The nonsensical build yu can make are just... French kiss. Nothing like using artillery as shotguns for the lolz and watching everything melt away.

I have an idea for a Shrapnel story featuring the return of Miller's/Barber's Marauders in the Hinterlands.
It's behind four other story ideas in my head, so couple that with the time for submissions to get reviewed and approved, the likelihood of me getting to it would take years.

I've always been partial to Avanti's Angels. They're far from the biggest merc unit, and kind of perpetual underdogs, but they excel at raiding, they survived the clans and even managed to acquire quit a bit of clan tech as a result. These guys cheat death on a regular basis, and even hurt the ego of Wobbie asshole and arch terrorist Cameron St. Jamais to the point that he declared a personal vendetta on them, and yes, the Angels outlived him in the end. They also have a rule specific to them if you play them in tabletop that reflects their unit specialization.

Sir, Cameron St. Jamais was a loyal follower of the Master and Blake's sacred Word, let's not throw insults at the man. He died for a glorious tomorrow for humanity that never came to be.
