    I'm totally diggin' the '36 starting point! I love the fact the Major Powers aren't yet at war, 'n there is some room for the diplomacy dance before the inevitable. I just started 'n am interested how the Spanish Civil War turns out 'n how that will affect WWII, or if the Soviets get involved in the Winter War 'n how long the Molotov Ribbentrop Treaty lasts. So many excitin' variables!

    • @TheHilltopPillbox
      @TheHilltopPillbox  6 лет назад +4

      Absolutely! That is what makes it such a unique gaming experience. There are very few "you must do this on round one" strategic moves, and because of the National Victory Conditions, conquest might not actually be the best thing for your country. Have fun!

      Thanks for watching! It is a great experience! Very involved, with tons of options, so you won't learn it on the first few games, but you will learn the basics in a couple of turns. Then, it's all about the Victory Conditions that drive your overall strategy. Make sure you know what your enemy needs for Victory Conditions, and try to block him!

      Well, the map can be found online for free; so if you are really into strategy games, get yourself a print on cardboard, organize some unit pieces and you should be able to go. You may also find some used games from the version of 2015 on eBay or similar sites...

      @@itestoel4075 "Revised" sometimes conjures up sweeping changes that make the first release obsolete, but the changes to this game, as I understand them, are more meant to add flow and depth to the game. The italians played a great game until declaring war. Mopping up the neutrals would be a great way of getting IPCs but should of acted earlier. How come the communist Spanish didn't help out ? Can't the russian player control them? A very good video and it explains a lot of the new rules. The croatia expansion is the only one I would bother with I think but excited to have it

      Thanks for watching and commenting, Marc! It was one of our earlier games, and opportunities slipped by a couple of times. The Russians do have to be very careful about using the Spanish Republicans, as they will get eaten up quickly by the German/Italian military might pretty quickly. They are mostly used for either a "sure thing", when German and Italy are both suffering, or as a "Hail Mary", last ditch attempt to do something fun. But it is an interesting expansion, and we play it the most often!

      It's hard to choose a "best" version, to be fair. If you only have one day to play, then most HBG Global games would not be considered. If you have a weekend with guys who know how to play, it's hard to beat GW36.
      I think it comes down to personal preference, the time and space available, and the type of people who are playing.
      If I have one day to play, and players who really know the game, it is hard to beat GW39 Ultra. (Yeah, I am a little biased, as I was a co-developer).
      If I have longer, then GW36 will definitely hit the table!

    But the rules say that Great brittain can declare war on a Major Power when it reaches wartime income and if that nation has declared war on another nation, so when Italy declares war on Turkey, Turkey is a nation, so Great Brittain could then declare war on Italy.

    • @TheHilltopPillbox
      @TheHilltopPillbox  4 года назад +1

      Good point.
      Yeah, that caused some problems. I know that rule was argued back and forth, but I believe in that version of the rules, Italy would have to declare war on a playable nation, not a strict neutral. The wording was not explicit at the time we played.

    • @victoryfirst06
      @victoryfirst06 4 года назад

      @@TheHilltopPillbox
      Oh, I thought it would be a bit strange if Italy conquered all Neutral Powers, and the Allies still can't declare war on Italy. That explains a lot.
      Another little note 31:14
      Germany has captured Paris, but the rest of the French zones in French Home Country are also under German control, while the tanks can't reach all of them, so that is impossible. And in the v3 rules state that the unoccupied land zones of a surrendered Nation can be claimed by the nation who moves a land unit into it first, but if not, they are from nobody. So Engeland could take Aquitaine (Gascony) and Normandy if he wants. But they can't be under German control because Germany can't reach those provinces if they take Paris with all of his forces, and otherwise there have to be a land unit there.

      It is a large investment of time, and a bit of money, but well worth it! You can also get the smaller map, which is still about as large as a typical G40 map. You can use your A&A pieces to populate the map, and find bits and pieces here and there to get it to a point where you are happy with it.
      If you treat it like a hobby, like cars/fishing/hunting, etc, it's actually far less expensive in time and money, and you can share it with others for free!

    • @TheHilltopPillbox
      @TheHilltopPillbox  3 года назад

      Hello Scott, and welcome to the war!
      The map is available at www.historicalboardgaming.com
      The pieces are also available there, but most of us use a lot of Axis and Allies units. If you don't have access to a lot of those units, then look for some old copies of the A&A games, and HBG also has deals on particular units.
      The 'fun aspect', as you call it, is that with GW36, no game is set in stone. You don't have to do certain moves at certain times. You can ally with anyone (as in this game, Comintern and Axis have a bit of a treaty going on which allows for greater freedom in decision making), and you can declare war at ANY time - even on another player's turn.
      The wide variety of units is also attractive to some, as you can have different strengths of armor, infantry, artillery, aircraft, and ships.
      I hope that helps!

    • @TheHilltopPillbox
      @TheHilltopPillbox  6 лет назад +4

      Hello, RD! Thanks for watching!
      You have two choices for the map (small and large), and a ton of choices for the pieces. Check out www.historicalboardgaming.com/Global-War-1936-1945-Variant-Map_p_2029.html for the map, and then hunt around for the special pieces/markers/tokens.
      If you are just starting out, I highly recommend trying to find old Axis and Allies games for sale on ebay or Craigslist. You will then have a large number of pieces that you can then throw some paint on in order to differentiate between the different planes, tanks, ships, and aircraft. Unless you are independently wealthy, you should inch your way into the game, and treat it like a hobby. It might take a while to build your game to where you are satisfied with it, but believe me, it is worth it! (I've taken about 4 years to get my collection built up, and I am still grabbing things here and there!)
      The really nice thing about HBG's games is that you can pick and choose which units you want to have available for each game. You don't need to make everything available, and it still plays very well. So, if you don't have sculpts for the different infantry types, or armor types, then just play with the basic units until you can get them. A very flexible game that allows for a wide number of game play options. Enjoy!

      Yes, it can be difficult, but if you introduce the game as a "marathon" and not a "sprint", most folks will settle in and make plans that they then hope to see to fruition. It is unlike any other war game I have played, and it's not just big for the sake of being big - the game is very well constructed, and once you get the rules nailed down (still working on that here and there with newbies), it plays quite smoothly.

      Hello Elwood, thanks for watching and commenting!
      After Paris falls, the French can declare the Belgian Congo as their new capital. They can also choose London or Algeria. If the second one falls, a third one may be declared, and France continues to get any income from Free French territories.
      So, when France chose Belgian Congo, they switched out the current infantry for one of their own. Fun!

    • @TheHilltopPillbox
      @TheHilltopPillbox  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, that is the reason! (We did mess up on the rule about lend-lease, though. They would need to have a working naval base in the territory to receive any help from foreign powers. Ooops.) So, France can relocate their capital, but make sure to save their cash so they can build the naval base!

      @TheHilltopPillbox  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for watching and the feedback! The map itself is about $159, but to get all the pieces as shown will cost quite a bit more. It's hard to say, actually. The best way to approach it is to buy the map and download the rules. Then, use all of your existing A&A-type minis (you may have to paint a bit!) to see what you need to purchase. Then, buy what you need, when you need it.
      I look at this as more of an ongoing hobby than a single game. If you look at it like that, it is considerably cheaper than most hobbies, and if you divide it by the number of player hours it is used, it really gets to be pennies per hour after a while. Also, nothing gets used up, as with toy rockets or other hobbies where you have to keep shelling out cash to enjoy it.
      If you go bit-by-bit, you'll eventually get to the point where you have a nicely fleshed-out game that is a rich experience for many years!

      Btw I played over Christmas too and learned a fair bit, just trying to help out with my comments. I noticed a major factory was built in Calcutta, but since that is British land and NOT Home territory for Britain you can't build one (I emailed the creators to confirm because my friend is stubborn). Furthermore, you need a supply path to build a factory so Italy couldn't have built one in North Africa without a naval base or shipyard there first.

    • @wolfgangbudarick9809
      @wolfgangbudarick9809 6 лет назад

      Around the 40 min mark the US of A lend-leased a fighter to the new French capital but there would need to be an undamaged naval base first. #SupplyPaths Anyway, love the video so far, and I'm looking forward to finishing it tomorrow!!

      @TheHilltopPillbox  6 лет назад

      Thanks for all the corrections! I realized that Japanese one a couple turns in, but forgot to mention it later. My bad! And, for your other corrections, thank you! I had spoken with someone who plays a lot and he swore you could build a major there, too. I guess we'll have to re-think our Calcutta strategy, since only a minor or two won't be able to crank out enough troops, and GB building colonial gets expensive! Also, your note on the lend-lease needing the naval base is welcomed, since France seemed to get a bit too powerful...

    • @wolfgangbudarick9809
      @wolfgangbudarick9809 6 лет назад

      Yea the rules aren't too clear to if you can build a major in Calcutta. I only noticed because there is an exception for ANZAC and Canada but not for India. And I noticed you may not have factored in Hainan (The little island off China) into the Chinese income, something I forgot my first game lmao. Lastly at around 1:18:00 Japan and America built more than two marines (And I assume Japan built more than two mountain infantry a turn previously) but the limit to special infantry is two a turn. To offset the limit they added elite marines/SNLF.

And as for Bulgaria (and the other two) they would instantly align when Germany declares war on the ruskies. I am watching a lot of games of this being played on RUclips, but I am very confused as to scoring, which I have seen across several videos, and none of them have done this properly. According to the rules you add up the national objectives AND objective cities. Plus you also lose victory points as well. Is it common to only count national objectives? In fact, the rules seem to indicate that national objectives are optional additions to the true way of scoring. Just curious as a newcomer from Axis and Allies going into Global 1936, because it doesn't seem worth it to go for the victory cities otherwise.
    3.2 Objective Cities: You can calculate the victory objectives by
    totaling the number of Objective cities a player controls. They are;
    Berlin, Tokyo, Rome, London, Calcutta, Sydney, Paris, Washington
    D.C., Moscow, and Nanking.
    3.3 Loss: A nation loses one Victory Objective for each land zone
    worth at least 1 IPP in its Home Nation that is enemy occupied at
    end of game. A nation that has surrendered cannot achieve any
    victory conditions.

    • @axisandallies-legends9534
      @axisandallies-legends9534 6 лет назад +1

      Also it seems to me that Britain could declare war on Italy once Italy declared war on Greece, because I believe it is a nation? (This is on their reference sheet):
      Can Britain Declare War on Axis :Yes, Once Britain reaches full production. It can’t declare war on an Axis power that has not yet declared war another nation during the game.

    • @TheHilltopPillbox
      @TheHilltopPillbox  6 лет назад

      Hello Andrew, thanks for watching and commenting! You are absolutely correct in your observations. Allow me to explain our situation.
      Yes, there are a number of players that I play with who simply like playing the National Objectives, as the Cities tend to be a bit too "focused", as it were. For instance, Japan can load up a few cities and leave the rest of the board empty and win the game for the Axis because the open areas do not give points to the Allies or Comintern, i.e., they are worthless land territories. This is not very close to being historically accurate, and since HBG is moving towards more historicity in its games, we tend to embrace the Objectives over the Cities. I cannot speak, of course, for anyone else outside of my game group.
      We also don't like that 3.3 rule, in that it allows for a last-turn run on people's victory points, as some nations have multi-point objectives that can get wiped out. For instance, Italy can get up to two points for territories it didn't possess, at the start. So, Italy goes on a dramatic run around Africa and takes 7 territories, but then the Allies make a landing on two Italian zones and eliminate those two points. There is no way for the Allies to hold them for a turn, but they don't need to since the game is now over.
      We realized early on that this could be a contentious point with other game groups, but we were happy with the decision. It keeps people playing more honestly, and you MUST really plan ahead. Rarely does anyone "win" on the final round in some sort of sneaky attack.
      I think we embraced the Objectives too because Cities is too much like Axis and Allies Global 40, and felt a little simple for a game of this complexity.

    • @TheHilltopPillbox
      @TheHilltopPillbox  6 лет назад

      This one caused us a bit of grief for one big reason: Italy is pretty much screwed if UK can declare war on Italy if Italy goes into Yugoslavia or Greece. They simply do not have the economy, and UK does. The Allies can simply ignore Germany, focus on Italy, and Germany has to stay back and babysit until Italy can get its act together. By then, the shooting war is on, and Germany cannot afford to fight Comintern and the Allies, plus protect Italy. The math just doesn't seem to work.
      We treat that rule as a Major Nation, which includes France, of course.
      Again, we could be wrong in that, but in our experience, the Axis are pretty much done if Italy can't get some cash moving in. 10 IPP in this game sits you at the kid's table, and you can watch the grown-ups play. Letting Italy take Greece and Yugoslavia without fear of reprisal allows much more "playability", as it were.
      If your experience is different, please let us know! Maybe we just aren't playing Italy right! Thanks!

    • @axisandallies-legends9534
      @axisandallies-legends9534 6 лет назад

      I suppose the opposite could be said about not going for other player's capitals and not being rewarded for keeping your own, in terms of there being no point for going for capitals. I haven't played the game so I didn't know that that was an option for the Axis and I would not want that to be the result at the end.
      That makes since for 3.3. However I understand the designers' intent here because if the Axis won the war owning much of Russia and Africa but losing Italy and German homelands that doesn't seem like a win. Losing homeland seems like it would be crushing for morale.
      Maybe instead if Italy took 7 African countries, then they lose two home territories, then it would be 7 (African Territories) -2 (Taken Italy Homelands)=5, then Italy still max their points out for that objective at 2. I am not sure about the true mechanics of the rule but maybe that would be a compromise. And I know that is just an example for Italy, I have not played the game so I am not sure if that would fully encompass all of the national Objectives.
      Ultimately I was looking for this type of commentary so I could see if the purpose was balance driven or not, so thanks! Sorry if you have already mentioned this in a previous video, I will eventually be getting to those as well, just started with this and the collection gathering and etc.

    • @axisandallies-legends9534

      I have no experience, I am just reading the rules and watching videos and gathering interest in Global 1936! Letting Italy take Greece and Yugoslavia seems fine, but going into Turkey, Iraq, etc seems like it would prompt some response from the Allies. At least Italy might have some claim on those neighboring nations, but going beyond that seems quite questionable if they can just invade the rest of the neutrals with the world watching. Sounds great and I am eagerly waiting for more gameplay videos for 1936!

      @@TheHilltopPillbox Lol, i remember not knowing about axis and allies and always being unhappy with risk because theres rather little to do and if the dice aren't on your side you are going to lose no matter what. Frankly, i also thought risk was the pinnacle of war gaming, because ive just never seen any other board game where you could conquer stuff. I was playing triplea on pc and it took me a few years to realize that there was an actual board game triplea was based on. Had i never heard of triplea, i probably would have been a bit overwhelmed by axis and allies too when i saw it the first time, so i can understand that, but i surely would have been very amazed too.
      NP, i appreciate theres videos about board games like these where you can get an impression of how it is to play them.

      @@TheHilltopPillbox I don't know whether you would be into that sort of thing, but you should really invest in a decent computer (if you don't already have one) and get 'Hearts of Iron 4'. If you really enjoy games like 'GW1936' and 'Axis & Allies', I guarantee you'll love HOI4. It will also be easier to play (online multiplayer as well as singleplayer against AI) and record than the board games, and will probably spice up your channel a bit and interest a lot of your current viewership. Will likely draw more people to your channel as well, and in turn get the board games more attention.
      Win-Win if you ask me :D

    Could Italy have declared war on Republican Spain without going to war with Comintern or the Allies? Doing so and threatening Gibraltar would have obvious benefits.

    • @TheHilltopPillbox
      @TheHilltopPillbox  6 лет назад

      Thanks for watching! Good question...
      First thought:
      you can only declare war on a nation, and Republican Spain is a faction, not a nation, per se.
      Second thought:
      I believe they "can" declare war, since you really can declare war on anyone you're not allied with, but since Republican Spain is Controlled by the Comintern, they would instantly become Aligned with each other. That would bring Italy into a state of war with the Comintern, which really could complicate things as it vaults the SU into a full war production, probably before Germany is ready to take them on, and that would probably screw any chance the Axis has to find success on the Eastern Front.
      It might be semantics, but I think the first one is correct. Whatever you decide, make sure everyone knows ahead of time! Enjoy!

    • @chrisatkins1665
      @chrisatkins1665 6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the reply! To clarify, I was asking whether Italy could declare war on Spain now that the Republicans control it. I suppose they could, right, but I was wondering what the consequences would be? The benefits seem clear, being able to threaten Gibraltar from the land. And Spain looks pretty sparse right now too. But as you said, that might throw Italy into war against the Comintern, with could threaten Germany. However, why not have Italy do this after Germany goes to war with Russia? Doesn't Spain align against the Axis at that point anyway?

    • @TheHilltopPillbox
      @TheHilltopPillbox  6 лет назад

      Ah, I see. Well, from the rulebook: "Republican Spain Aligns with USSR if it wins the Spanish Civil War." Also, Republican Spain will Align with USSR once USSR and Germany are at war, regardless of the state of the civil war.
      With Republican Spain being a Victory Condition for the USSR, the Axis should keep an eye on the situation, to be sure!
      It is interesting to try to use Italy to take Spain. Italy is pretty weak, though, and spreading itself too thin might allow the UK to get a much stronger presence in Africa, thereby thwarting Italy's National Objectives.

    • @chrisatkins1665
      @chrisatkins1665 6 лет назад +1

      that is useful info. I think the interesting strategic question, in the game you were playing, is whether Italy could have attacked Spain and stayed neutral toward UK and USA. If so, and if Italy could have wiped out Spain, they could have then declared war on the UK in a position to directly threaten Gibraltar from the land.

    • @TheHilltopPillbox
      @TheHilltopPillbox  6 лет назад

      Yes, that's a good point. I think it'd be likely that UK would have declared war on Italy if Italy had gone into Spain, and then gobbled up Italy's interests in Africa, as there wouldn't have been nearly the amount of stuff coming out of Libya. Add to that the fact that Italy would then have to defend Spain with a considerable amount of force in order to prevent a UK landing, (and the Germans would be pretty ticked at that), and I think Spain might be a pipe dream for Italy, unless the Africa campaign is already completed for them. But hey, this game is all about options, so have fun trying different things out! Enjoy!

    Can I use my 1940 global pieces to play this if I get the board?

    • @TheHilltopPillbox
      @TheHilltopPillbox  6 лет назад +1

      You can certainly play the basic version, and just avoid some of the sculpts that you won't have at the start. As I suggest to many others, try to find old copies of A&A pieces and throw some acrylic paint on them. Then you can have the different types of armor and aircraft.
      As you go along, pick up pieces here and there, look on historicalboardgaming.com for some great sale items (under the Sale! Sale! Sale! button on the upper left), and you can build up your collection. It has taken me a few years, and I'm still not where I want to be. I just think of it as a hobby, not a game, and the cost doesn't seem bad at all. Enjoy!

    I just watched this whole video! I liked the video but I did not like Japan's strategy. They pretty much had no counter for USA and they took to long with china and waited too long. Italy's idea to not join was good because keeping a large force in africa will distract Britain. Soviets had no strategy and just let germany take them over. Did not have a frontline and pretty much only put forces in major cities.
