Shi Shi Beach Camping in the Winter - Olympic National Park, in under 4 minutes

  • I wanted one last overnight trip of 2023 so I headed to Shi Shi Beach and Point of Arches, on the coast of the Pacific ocean in the Olympic National Park.
It was a wildly muddy trail, the high king tides swallowed up the beach all day and my late start meant I arrived as the sun was setting. But still... totally worth it.
It's about as far northwest that you can get in the contiguous United States and it feels just as wild. Particularly in the winter, where you are the only person for miles of empty beach.
Big rollers come in off the Pacific, wind whips the sand, seagulls and crows soar overhead looking for an easy meal and with a hot cup of coffee, you get a great front row seat.
At night, the sun sets in a way I've never really seen anywhere else, making way for an impossible amount of stars that come out in an unobstructed show of the Milky Way.
It's a long drive if you're coming from off the Olympic peninsula, but definitely a worth it.
