    It seemed like such a waste to kill all the residents in the cryo pods… like damn. Imagine sleeping for 200 years and wake up confused and scared, only to die from asphyxiation… in my opinion the Institute could have brought all the residents to Institute. Reason why is because these people are not at all affected by the cruelty and savages of the commonwealth.. these people are prewar so they are very much civilized and proper. They could have easily integrated them into their society..
    Or they could put them back into cryosleep, and when they wake, the residents along with Sole Survivor can reclaim sanctuary and work together to survive in the commonwealth. Them along with the arrival of the minutemen would be beneficial to helping them survive.

      Good question, even Kellogg didn't know why they didn't put everyone back on ice if I remember correctly from his memory quest. As to why not bring them to the Institute, limited resources I would imagine, and not being scientists, there would be no quality return on that investment. Shaun also was not happy about the minutemen reforming, as is evident by what he says about them during the Institute quest where you retrieve a wasteland scientist.

    • @ssddsquare

      Makes me wonder what would happen when the nuclear reactors eventually run out of fuel.
      Fission and Fusion reactions, although more energetic and efficient than a power source using combustion or other form of chemical reaction, they can't power something indefinitely.
      Frankly, it's a miracle pre-war technology still works as well as it does 210 years after the bombs dropped.
      I understand why there aren't many working cars in the post war world. Not many average people might be willing to go through the extra trouble to get a car running again. Although I'd argue that a truck would be a better option then those mutated cow things traders use. Trucks can carry more and with proper armor they'd provide both protection from radiation and physical violence.

    My thought on the purpose of the Vault 111 experiment: There were at least elements in the government that wanted to research evacuating a small portion of humanity to another planet in another star system. Given that, it makes a lot of sense wanting to study the effects of stasis on the human body and mind.

    A little tidbit of info that is a common misunderstanding represented in film games and TV, is the EMP, electro magnetic pulse from a nuclear detonation.
    This only happens in certain conditions. Like at 18:50 ish, it’s mentioned the EMP could have brought down the vertibird. If the Vertibird remained airborne, after the shockwave. Then it would have been fine, as there was no EMP event.

      This is exactly the intention of Vault 111. The enclave was running experiments to help them get humans to another planet. The intention was to study a plethora of things such as social pressures, types of governments, cryo-preservation vs natural procreation vs unnatural procreation, the terraforming of other planets (Via Gecks), etc. Every experiment served some goal to determine how to get humans to another planet as we had ransacked ours in the fallout timeline.

    17:27 I noticed some barrels laying near the APC so I'm willing to guess that the vehicle was being used to transport whatever was in those barrels.
    Perhaps the flash from the nuke temporarily disoriented the driver and he lost control and crashed, or perhaps he saw the detonation in the rear view mirror and floored it to get away and he crashed from going too fast.
    The crash ruptured the barrels and the driver was poisoned from whatever was in them or he did escape from the wrecked APC but was seriously injured and in shock and eventually succumbed to his injuries.

    I always figured the vertibird that crashed into the museum was the one outside Vault 111 on the day the bombs fell. They could have had a stopover at Vault 111 en route, transferring essential personnel.
    Who woulda thought a video game recreation of a historical site wouldn't be accurate....
    IRL, everyone on the elevator would have been cooked to a crisp before it even began moving.
    The cool thing about FO4 is that, even after many playthroughs I still discover new things. For example, I never noticed the security baton on the crate before. It really doesn't matter because radroaches are a one punch deal anyway. I don't think I found the Red Menace holotape until my third time.
    I never waste the ammo on the roaches.
    As for the fallout issue, it really all depends on the nature of the bomb's construction as to what specific isotopes will be in the fallout. If the bomb we see going off near Vault 111 was a ground burst, then you might not have got cooked while standing on the Vault 111 elevator, waiting for it to move. They would likely not have been in line of sight of the nucleus of the blast which would have blocked the infrared burst which could have instantly cooked them to char. It is likely the massive crater to the south was once a major strategic installation that was heavily fortified, where a ground burst would be appropriate. The existence of a nuclear weapons stockpile there could explain the Glowing Sea. They might destroy the bunker but not cause all the nuclear material stored there to go critical.

    It's odd that the soldiers that were protecting the vault didn't enter the vault. They calmly died with the rest. It's funny that no matter how much a writer thinks things through, there are so many holes in the stories. In video games, the holes can exist because they only have so much room before the gaming system malfunctions. The weirdest thing is that most people won't notice the holes in the stories until they re-watch it numerous times. Our brains just accept the holes the first time we see it. Major LOL!

    So my theory on why they kill the other 111 dwellers is that since the Vault wasn't necessarily intended to run for 200+ years, they realized it was running out of cryo-fuel or w/e, and didn't have enough to keep the other residents supported indefinitely, so they axed them to make sure the Sole Survivor would be kept alive until they potentially needed them.

    I think the Institute needed a new source of DNA, not because of radiation, but because of inbreeding over the course of 140 years -- because if the Institute shelter wasn't good enough to protect from radiation, why would a Vaultec Vault be any better? Also, the residents of vault 81 would have been as protected as the residents of vault 111 - but they would have suffered from the same inbreeding problem as the Institute -- so they didn't go that route...

    The "Institutes" hierarchy is comprised of Chess players, not Checkers players. Meaning, everything they have done is for the "Long Game". The Institutes technology of Cryo-Pods, cloning, & synthetic beings of all varieties is what happens when science is unfettered by morals, where the ends justify the means. Given these facts, I am of the firm belief "Father" is a clone of the original Sean, the original Sean remains in Cryo-stasis in another secure Institute facility. It would have been foolhardy for Father to be a "One-Off", why waste the only pure pre-war source of human genetics? The Fallout TV series confirms my belief I have held since Fallout 4 launched & we encountered Father, the "Scientific" model of gradual steps is well represented in our advancements over the decades. Sean is still out there somewhere for the "Sole Survivor" to find. Fallout 5 should be a continuation of this storyline.

      There are certain places where the clothing worn by firefighters who responded to the accident was discarded because it was covered in radioactive dust.
      So imagine what would happen to an area that suffered multiple Chernobyl-level disasters but nobody was around to clean them up.

      the blast from what i understand on a scientific standpoint. that radiation spread for miles, even as far almost to Tokyo. so if you look at a map of Japan, if one bomb can cause that amount of destruction, which took them a long time to rebuild, im thinking that's what they came with up.
      still Fallout has always been a true post apocalyptic world, i know some people aren't religious, but one thing we know about mankind, we can be our own worse enemy at times.
      And just like with all these conflicts happening in different parts of the world, i do think some day America will have something happen to us we never think could happen. but still to use the words the world really has ended, that means that wouldn't be an ordinary explosion. on the news station just before you leave Nate and Nora leaves the house with Shaun, the news man confirmed that the bombs hit New York and Pennsylvania, so to reach all the to Boston, that means the explosion would be like a meteor hitting the planet.
      with radiation like that, i can see why you have something like the glowing sea.
      Fallout New Vegas has some parts that are like that to, like if you go too far into certain parts that have radiation, without a suit you wouldn't make it long. well in Fallout 4, power armor is really the only way, but it's still not safe because of radscorpians and deathclaws.

    Good video. Big fan of FO4 on the PS4, massively modded (of course).
    Bethesda game, meaning "Why bother? The modders can fix that." Always felt this applied as much to the background / lore as to what they did, or didn't do with the game itself.
    I am vaguely aware of US history, and had heard that Sanctuary Hills was sitting on what is a historical site ./national park in the real world. Thank you for the added detail.
    I'd quibble that the facing of a crashed Vertibird would not necessarily have any bearing (pun unintended) on the direction it was flying beforehand. If there was a mid-air loss of control, it could have done literally anything before finally crashing - flown straight OR 'spiralled in'.. So the Verti due east of V111 could still be a contender, not that this really matters.
    At least some of the US military and intel bases were specifically at a heightened state of alert before it all hit the fan, seen in their terminals and notes..
    Let's be honest, there were a lot of Vault-Tec experiments that seemed downright stupid. I 've often wondered if it all came down to VT executives asking each other, 'What sick stuff will we do to people in THIS Vault?" and then randomly pulling scribbled-down ideas out of a hat. "Kittens? Psycho? Flamethrowers? I LOVE IT!!!!"
    As regards the bomb detonation actually seen ingame, good job on the backtracking. Given the crater, extent of the destruction and the fallout, it must have been a biggie. But we only see that specific detonation, and then quickly go underground, so lesser follow-up blasts MIGHT have also occurred. No obvious blast zones for these, but Boston was not an insignificant city, so I expect that there wouldn't be simply one big bomb and that was all.
    Thinking that Vault-Tec could have deliberately screened the V111 supervisor for certain psychological traits. Was an experiment going on INSIDE the experiment we all know about? There is zero evidence of this, but it would be completely in Vault-Tec's style.
    I'd point out that "parallel" inventions and discoveries are surprisingly common throughout history. Various instances exist of groups and individuals coming up with remarkably similar ideas, with no prior contact. The Cryolater could be one of those things, or it could be as simple as both inventors, just happening to read the same source at some stage. Maybe the Cryolater was first seen as a villain weapon in an 'Unstoppables' comic book? Purely hypothetical, but it'd make sense.
    And yeah, the Institute's deliberate extermination / mass murder of everyone else in Vault 111 makes no sense at all , except as an in-story illustration of how they operate. We see that again and again - University Point, the FEV Lab, etcetera. Some people go on about how the Institute is the "best" faction, but their tech is the only reason to go with them. Leading to another gripe - whether the Institute, or the BOS or the Railroad, you can rise to high rank / influence in any of these, but cannot do a damn thing about how they take care of business. I feel like trying to steer them onto different paths could have been an very interesting aspect of the overall game, but no. My own head-canon prefers destroying the Institute, with an EVENTUAL Minutemen-Railroad alliance, but that's just me. :)
    Btw, I do like that you used a greening mod for your game. That aspect of FO lore never made any sense to me - nature is incredibly resilient, and we only have to look at Chernobyl to understand what would eventually happen in time, with even severely contaminated areas.

      The vertibirds are like the Osprey aircraft in the real world, they have dual propellers that swivel to allow vertical take of and landing like a helicopter, while keeping the faster flight like an airplane. You're mistaken about the experiment. Vaults weren't used to test technologies like cryonics; that tech was already well developed and in use elsewhere. The experiment wasn't being run on the vault dwellers at all, it was being run on the _staff._ They were shut into a vault, split into tribes (security vs scientists), and given only enough food for 180 days. They were told to expect an All Clear that was never going to come, and they were told to stay in the vault as their food ran out.
    And there was a whole load of frozen meat sitting in the vault, just waiting for them.
    The experiment had nothing to do with "long-term effects of suspended animation". The experiment was "How long will it take for people to resort to cannibalism?"

    • @IrresoluteCartographer
      @IrresoluteCartographer  5 месяцев назад +1

      Your suggestion is a possibility, but I don’t think it’s correct.
      First, the stated experiment wasn’t simply in cryonics, but the long-term freezing of unaware subjects. It wasn’t a test of freezing, but on the mental state of the frozen.
      As for the all clear, I believe that Vault-Tec was expecting to exert more control over their vaults in the aftermath of the bombs, and the All-Clear never came because it couldn’t.
      As for the splitting of the staff, that wasn’t a choice made by Vault-Tec, but by the staff themselves. Other than the overseer they all shared living quarters.
      If it was an experiment in testing how long it would take to descend into cannibalism, the vault door would have been sealed to prevent the exit the staff eventually took.

    • @Werrf1
      @Werrf1 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@IrresoluteCartographer Testing the effects of long-term storage is very different from every other vault experiment we know of. In nearly every case, vault experiments were about testing the behaviour of human societies in various scenarios. Will vault dwellers sacrifice one of their number each year? What happens when you have radical, diverse ideologies forced to interact? Society based on gambling. Arbitrary divisions between red and blue. Only one terrible comedian for entertainment. Etc.
      You don't need a vault to test the effects of long-term cryonics; that's an experiment better conducted in a lab with "volunteers", something we know various corporations did in the pre-war period. Designing the vault to only be habitable for the scientists for 180 days prevents that experiment from even being run properly; it makes no sense.

    • @IrresoluteCartographer
      @IrresoluteCartographer  5 месяцев назад +2

      The equipment in the vault was supposed to be monitored remotely, which gave them some trouble early on as errant signals were effecting some of the pods. The initial 180 days was to get the unaware subjects into the pods, to allow the staff to survive the period with deadly fallout, and to make sure the equipment got past the first few months without issue. Vaults with social experiments are generally far more obvious, as with your given examples. I would be more inclined to agree with you if the vault door could not be opened after it closed. The fact that they had 180 days of food, and were able to leave after it ran out doesn’t match your cannibalism scenario. I’d even be more inclined to agree with the idea that the experiment would be to investigate how long until hunger caused a revolt, but even then they could have done that experiment far more cheaply than the cost of freezing an entire neighborhood for centuries.

    • @Werrf1
      @Werrf1 5 месяцев назад

      @@IrresoluteCartographer Then there would be no reason to have a science staff there at all, and there would be a much larger food supply. Any way you slice it, the cryonics experiment doesn't make sense.

      @IrresoluteCartographer  5 месяцев назад +2

      @Werrf1 the science team was allowed to run experiments on the inmates of the pods so long as they didn’t interrupt the overall experiment.
