Wolverine and the X-Men as a collective were not unfamiliar with great games; though their success was largely only across two dimensions. When it came to the 3d stuff, Wolverine hadn’t taken home any awards, until the release of X-Men Origins Wolverine. Ask anyone at the time if they thought this game was good and they’d say on paper it was repetitive, had pacing issues, and lacked an engaging story, but in spite of it all, they enjoyed what was there, because the gameplay was so fluid, fun, and had so much room for creativity that they still came back to it. If you asked me a week ago, I’d say I never played it. Look, I’m sorry, I heard it was good, but it just never appealed to me as much as the bat and the spider. Plus, if I want a short, feisty, Canadian I can look to my girlfriend. But, on a random day, bored of the usual Ubisoft slop I downloaded it and my god, I had no idea what I was missing.
You know? Only a decade ago, good superhero games were still a hot commodity. For every Arkham Asylum and City there were endless duds like The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, Spider-Man Friend or Foe sigh poor guy, but there was also that one thor video game that sucked, a green lantern game that sucked, multiple iron man games that were just fine, and even the Deadpool game that I recently covered on the channel weren’t received super well. Superhero games that were worth the price of admission were hard to find, and you’d assume to find them associated with a titan like Spider-Man. But who would have thought that a game about Wolverine would be so good? Well, just about everyone.
With the popularity of superhero games being revitalised by the Arkham series and with the God of War series too ushering in a new age of gory beat em ups; a game featuring a brutal Marvel character was guaranteed to be a recipe for success. ghost rider Well, ok, I guess you have to bring some originality to the table; so how about instead of bathing in fire let's bathe in lots and lots of blood. Maybe instead of using a character that had only seen mainstream success from admittedly fun movies, we look to a character who had established wide appeal prior to a movie.
Wolverine has seen a slight surge in popularity after the Deadpool and Wolverine film, otherwise known as Deadpool 3. X Men Origins Wolverine is the best Wolverine game, which might change when the Insomniac Wolverine makes his debut in Marvels Wolverine. While there is a lot Insomniac can learn from the game, especially in the moments with Wolverine vs Deadpool, Wolverine vs Sabertooth, and Wolverine vs Gambit, they also need to see the games pitfalls in order to make a great X Men video game, more specifically, a great Wolverine game. Granted, this new Wolverine shouldn't retread everything mentioned in this X Men Origins Wolverine review, but this X Men Origins Wolverine retrospective, focusing on X Men Origins Wolverine Uncaged Edition for the 7th generation of consoles will outline what works and what doesn't. Of course, a lot of focus will be placed on the X Men Origins Deadpool, because what even is that?

Seeing as how insomniac took bits and pieces for Spider-Man. I’m so confident that Wolverine is gonna take the best parts of this game and build on it. I’m super stoked to play as Logan in his own Video Game again

I just do not understand why the blood that coats the blades during the heli takedown is purple. You can shave Logan down to a skeleton and bisect men at the hip, all with red blood, but the helicopter takedown blood is purple.
i think it's the lack of density on the blood (red) combined with the blue of the sky that gives the purple. it's not purple blood

The Deadpool game and X Men Origins Wolverine were both some of my favorite childhood games. It's such a shock to see both of those mentioned in a video which also is sponsored by an indie game that I just happened to have 800 hours in and have been playing since steam launch. Crazy coincidence.
The healing factor in this game is really cool. They definitely should build on that in the PS5 game.
From what i heard insomniac's wolverine, there are clear inspirations from the X-men wolverine game since its the most known source duh, but it's mostly it's own thing, not a lot of comboluted combos, no air combat like it's literally more grounded, 4 gadgets (for some reason) and less cartoony.
So keep your expectations pretty low if you don't wanna be disappointed.

I HIGHLY doubt there were any plans to make a better Deadpool in a follow-up film. The director behind that movie was not a fan of Deadpool's "merc with a mouth" character and deliberately took that away from him because of that, despite Ryan Reynolds personally asking for the incarnation to be more faithful.
I think it was probably meant to be vague enough that if the director came back. He'd still be silent. If he didn't. They can advertise "It's comic accurate now!. Come and watch!" When really he should've been comic accurate from the start (Not even necessarily the fourth wall breaking constant joke man. Deadpool can get serious too anyway)
I dont know if I'm remebering it right but, it would have been cool if they used an iteration of wolverine that lost his adamantium skeleton.
If im not mistaken, that version had his adamantium removed my magneto, but in addition also got his adamantium posioning healed by him not having it anymore.
Maybe they could have had some sheninigangs with his mutant powers going into overdrive allowing him to kind of slowly evolve or be more beast like to have him "unlock" different abilities and have even more variety and at the same time have an in-universe explanation for it.
X-men origins wolverine is such a underrated game in my opinion
X-Men Origins: Wolverine Uncaged Edition is right up there with Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Batman Arkham, and Treyarch's Spider-Man, as the definitive gaming experience for this particular character. It's such a blast to play, even to this day.
With that said, I can't say I'm terribly excited to see Insomniac's take on Wolverine, especially after playing Spider-Man 2. Remember, Web of Shadows was the blueprint for 2, but it still does many things better than the latter.
In terms of writing, going by the leaks, it seems like Insomniac are just going to double down on their worst writing tropes.
BTW Hard agree on Weapon XI. He's a genuinely cool idea for an X-Men villain. But because they had to call him Deadpool the idea of it has been forever tarnished. I actually wouldn't mind seeing something similar be utilized in the future.
Insomniac took the wrong lessons from Web of Shadows.
When we say we want WOS inspiration, we mean effortless switching between ground, air and wall combat with a flick of a button covering all core movement aspects of the character
Having a diverse moveset with the black suit having its dedicated animations
But they took the weak stuff like Venom's weak writing, the invasion (which I'd argue is worse in MSM2 cause it's rushed in the third act whereas the whole of WOS is based on an invasion) and the glitches/bugs

@@DatPRGuy2017 Perfectly said. If I may add, WOS also had more unique symbiote types such as the airborne Vulturlings and the teleporting Electrolings. Whereas Spider-Mid 2 just takes basic enemy types like melee, ranged, agile, and brutes and covers them in alien goo. It's just so odd how a game that had limited time and money had more cool ideas than the 5 year $300 million AAA game.
Speaking of glitches, asides from framerate dips and the game stopping to load the city because I was web swinging too fast I never really ran into any glitches in WOS. In Spider-Man 2 however, the first time I played I immediately got stuck while gliding during the Sandman boss because some invisible force kept pushing me back towards the screen. In fact, I ran into so many bugs that required me to soft reset the game.
In regards to Wolverine, it seems they're going to take influence from the recent God of War games when it comes to combat, similar to how Origins took inspiration from classic GOW. Now I like the recent GOW titles, but I don't want that grounded type of combat for everything, especially super hero games where I want something more flashy. So once again Insomniac is just doing something that's already been done without any actual fresh ideas.

@@DinoDave150 Oh yeah I almost forgot about the WOS enemies. If anything this adds to my opinion on MSM2 symbiote story being rushed as heck because several of the gameplay stuff and narrative elements needed more time in the oven
And as for Wolverine I've seen the leaks, I personally wanna save any criticism for when official gameplay comes out cause it would be weird criticising an unfinished build like it's completed

I liked how he unsheathe his claws and attacks human enemies from behind. Origins has nothing on that.
P5S Counterstrike playing over Wolverine is something I never knew I needed.
I don't wanna doubt Insomniac for this game, but I was one of the few people that got to play the pre-alpha build of the Wolverine game when it leaked. It shows off a ton of cool ideas and concepts, but it's looking way too similar to Spider-Man right now gameplay wise but without the web swinging. I dont wanna say too much for obvious reasons, but unless they add more to their gameplay its probably gonna just feel like a re-skin and get stale quick

well the spider-man model and archetype is what they have in storage rn for testing. many game companies do this. i’m sure they’ll tweak the spider man build they used once they perfect the wolverine one.

Granted, I had no idea who deadpool was at the time, but still, I remember actually being kind of disappointed when I played ultimate alliance 2, which was my first introduction to real deadpool, cuz he just had guns and swords instead of laser eyes and claws

No doubt this is a good game, but it hurts me that nobody ever seems to remember the Wolverine game from my childhood. X2: Wolverines Revenge was so damn fun and I would LOVE to see a video for that one sometime.
Somewhere in MCU comics I remember one where Wolverine wore the Venom suit. The simple idea of a tall Venom who already has webs slinging powers now has access to appropriately scaled wolverine clause, and healing factor. That is my ultimate video game wish.

The rare time where the video game tie in for a movie is actually FAR better than the movie. Both the 360/PS3/PC versions and the PS2/PSP/Wii versions were awesome.
Also, this was when Raven was still around. They're who made this. Of course Raven would treat the character right

I remember getting the platinum for this on the PS3! I loved this game (still do) and I loved how they got Wolverine right in more ways than one they showed that he's more than just brutal claws and that he's actually a fucking menace and complete killing machine when needed whos strong as shit who can find over 500 ways to tear you to peices or just kick your ass if your lucky! This game will always have a special place in my heart and memories!

I had fun with Thor God of Thunder. If you go in expecting a AAA title of course you’ll be disappointed. If you go in wanting a mindless fun beat’em up with Thor in the style of classic God of War, it’s a blast.
At the time, we had Ninja Gaiden, DMC4, God of War 3 etc. there was no end to these games. Not saying this game deserved the reviews, but I *do* remember my friend and I playing this game until 4AM only to be told by everyone that it sucked lolol

Ratchet never got a anything else post launch, Spideman games never get updates that improve the actual gameplay, movement nor world, just dumb suits, day and night shit or some random insignificant change nobody cares about.
So when Wolverine drops yall could ask for new moves, improve enemies world and more to make it the best game it can be.

Blood. The only thing they need to learn is the absolute need for gory, bloody carnage. The game should be rated R and pushing the boundaries of even that rating. We all saw saw Logan: claws don't mess around.

Games like Batman Arkham, Deadpool, Wolverine, Insomniac Spiderman, all have a very specific flow that works virtually with any melee/close range combat character.
When do we get a modern Hulk game? Surely it cant have the same target swap then back hit the enemy as lighter smalle3 characters can.
I want a Hulk game by insomniac. Or a better avengers game. Basic heroes have a perfect beat em up slasher vibe, but what about Iron Man? Hulk? They dont punch people and look flashy in every combo

Personally, I don't think a lot of people read as much books nowadays. So I'm not bothered by videogames going for more story-driven experiences - they need to get it from somewhere else.

I think Insomniac will cook up something good, but I'm not sure how well they'll write the story. I mean the Spider-man 2 story felt kinda rushed and like they had more or could've done more with it. But from what I saw from the leaks, I think gameplay wise at least, Wolverine will be pretty good, well...minus one thing...

Jean Grey should NOT be a playable character in a WOLVERINE game. I don't know why Insomniac feels that they NEED multiple playable characters, because I am playing a Wolverine game to play as, well, WOLVERINE.

I'm not big into superheroes like I was before, but I'll give Wolverine some credit over Batman and Spider-Man is that at least he is actually immortal and he has a geniune excuse not to age over the course of 30-40 years. Not saying this is great but I like the attempt.
I also don't think the Ghost Rider game is that bad, the biggest problem with it is that the game is brainlessly easy on normal difficulty. The Hell Cycle portions pretty much give you more XP than you can handle.
As for the X-Men Origins game itself, I do agree with much of what you said, I do think the combat is and high amounts of polish carries much of the game, the story is pretty bad, and the biggest problem with the game that it's better off not being tied to movie and just keeping the polished and fun combat and while being an original game. The Sentinel Lab level is the best in the game because it is most divorced from the movie. It can get pretty repetitive for sure, but the game is pretty short and can be beaten in a day since it's based on a movie.
Also, if you really are tired of games prioritizing stories you can always play indie games or be more selective about the AAA games you play. I seem to be the only one on the internet who is geniunely careful about what he plays and doesn't complain about games he is not going to play. It's rather ironic too, that people are acting like 7th gen games were "anti cinematic" when people at the time were complaining about overly cinematic they were. I wish the only form of games discussion at times were obscure parts of the internet like back then.
You didn't need to emulate it, the uncaged edition was released on PC too and if you know how abandonware is then you could've played it pretty easily on your computer

No need to emulate this game - there was a PC version of it and it's easy to find cracked versions online. There are loads of great texture mods that let you use other costumes, even the ones from the new movie.
4:15 Bruh I just played the pc version which you can find from multiple abandonware sites for free you can mod this version with new content actually added this year (patiently waiting for insomniacs wolverine)
It's funny to me that the voice doesn't really match the face I had for the person behind the videos. Like, at all. I expected the guy to be around 18-20 years of age, with medium to long hair.
