- Tony Royster Jr.and AwolNation working on a song in Redbull Studios back in 2010 or 2009. This song was originally called "Fist Pumping to the Grave".... which later turned into "SOUL WARS"
Tony kills this track, the song is pretty solid too. The fills Tony plays are just soooo outrageous, mega chops with awesome syncopation you can't get any better!
This song was renamed to "Soul Wars", and thankfully the lyrics were changed.
The drums really do make the song, but I kinda dig the vocals too.
Thankfully indeed...it's still interesting to see how a song evolved into something a lot more meaningful. It's one of my favorites because of the chorus 'can I get an amen/I had to struggle to be gracious' and I can relate to that.
Totally. One of my favorites, too!
Enekobus
it amazes me too to see this unfinished song becoming a amazing song, also one of my favorites!
Tony Royster can make any melody or music sound great with his awesome druming!
I think he is the best drummer i've ever seen.
thankfully he changed the lyrics when the song was released.
+spaveevo Gotta give some props on the new lyrics... it's at least more of a song now, instead of just repeating the same phrase like... 30x?
i like how this song developed from a good song to a kickass song!!
Tony is a beast. I want to be able to play like you when I grow up
Idk why but I fucking love how perfect 2:09 is, it’s so simple but pleasing lol
3.50 the wingnut and cymbal felt couldn't help but jump to Tony's groove. \m/
I feel sorry for the drummer that'll have to learn this song for a live performance.. lol
He's been my favorite drummer since I started playing. Crazy!
Oh heck ya I'll play on gour for ya. Sounds like a good song. I git something for it....ahhhhhh we have the tabs for you to learn, here ya go............ hmmm wth... ah ah ah how many drummers had to play these parts... lol lol lol
he can turn any song into gold.
the dude is so pro that needed just one shot. there's like thousands of hours behind the kit to get to that level :p
Look at the HHXs cymbal stand. Felts on and off means he played it a few times.
+Dallin Stagg I don't doubt he nailed it on the first take, but even then, it's always good to get a few takes for experimentation and last minute changes to the song.
+magajelly I know. I'm just educating Marc Espejo Ruiz.
+Marc Espejo Ruiz this isn't all in one take. if you look at his right hand cash, the wing nut on the top isn't there then it is.
+Alterverse TV Tony hit that thing off in this video at 3:50. Yeah, it is not one take. But still awesome.
This just shows you that he doesn't need a monster set to sound good
When the backing stopped and it was just drums i could still hear the melody.
He was fire!
Ladies and gentlemen and gentlemen dressed as ladies you have entered the LUDWIG MATRIX.
So this was how I discovered Awolnation like 7/8 years ago.
Thank you Tony!
Tony: "new high score! What does that mean? Did I break it?"
3:51. the crash/hardware couldn't handle it. lol
+Nick Murphy the crash cymbal won't last long either with the bad habit of striking its edge. I don't get how he does that even being so good/precise technique-wise.
+NeCtRiCkS You always hit crashes on the edge.
Dallin Stagg by "hit on the edge" I actually mean hitting it perpendicularly or anything close to that
It's definitely not a bad habit. Tony knows what he's doing. He had no lug nut on the cymbal stand to get the most sound out of it. I get what you're saying, though about hitting on the edge. He can just replace it: he is a Sabian artist, as you probably know.
Mike McLaren Drumming. He's also a DW artist, playing a Ludwig kit. I bet John Good and the other DW execs weren't thrilled when they saw this video.
Love the "another day at the office" look he has at the end. Probably thinking that he could do better
This Song Blows
3:14 - 3:34 - that phrase is just monster! One of the best drum video i have EVER watched, so unbelieveable skills!
Great drumming to lyrics a 4 year old could have written. I like the mixture of complexity and simplicity.
Bro tony is one of if not the most versatile drummer on the planet.... He can play any style amazingly
Thanks man ya I totally agree. Tony is great at keeping his unique sound through everything he does, no matter what genre.
This is only the demo for Soul Wars. Demos aren't suppose to sound good at first, they are just the skeleton of a song. But honestly I think this is one of their best songs. It has a lot a variety and its not too consistent and straightforward. This is just my personal opinion.
It honestly Feels like this version was an intentional red herring put out as to not give away the whole song. “Fist pumping to the grave” is surrounded by so much empty space, it’s basically the same recorded line on repeat and a lot of the Adlibs that don’t line up in this version align perfectly in soul wars as if soul wars was already written but maybe not mastered or finalized but the hook was replaced for this video.
The fact that the rest of the song stayed exactly the same as we hear it here only makes me believe it more.
He's doing short groups of single stroke rolls (groups of 4, then 2) separated by double strokes on the kick. S-HT-FT-FT-K-K-S-HT-K-K-S-S-K-K-S-S-Crash (S=snare, HT=high tom, FT-floor tom, K=kick). It's just basic rudiments thrown around the kit really fast and smooth.
what's not to like about this, the man killed it. With any sort of performance to music he has to follow guidelines I think this shows how broad a spectrum he can play as well it shows how versatile he is as a drummer. I enjoyed seeing this.
The chorus that replaced this one is so much better. To everyone bashing the song, have you all even heard the final version?
i am so glad he changed the chorus
I wish Tony Royster Jr. would invite me over to his place to jam!
Its actually awesome dude... look up the actual song.
Soul Wars.
AwolNation is a sick band.
tony is insane too
Wowwww!!! Tony KILLED it as usual!!!
~Vince
I'm really glad he changed the chorus
This is the deal of written only communication, my dear Watson.
ahhh man, this is awesone, i had no idea it was tony on this one, but looking back its clear to see how it's so goddam tight !
he can play all style of music... 2 thumbs up!
Great tune, yes the GREAT 👏👏👏Drumming makes it. 🔥👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
well said, I agree, especially with drumming, I think its the one instrument where the player can switch genres and still does his style
i love it tony, maintenant tony peut jouer dans tous les styles quelle merveille ce batteur
No drum program can EVER come close to an excellent drummer. This should be proof enough for anybody.
That badge is the Ludwig centennial series. It sounds awesome, but you're also hearing that through well mixed mics and studio eq.
3:09 cymbal felt and stopper magically appears.
You see it on and off throughout the video because it's not one take and not in sequence. If you watch at 3:50 you see when it flies off.
yeah saw that now :)
this was the second thing i noticed. the first one that got my attention was Aaron suddenly wearing an overcoat! :P
HE NAILED THIS! strange song. BUT, HE NAILED THIS!!!!
anyone noticed the wingnut that magically appeared?
The song is now called Soul Wars, and the vocals are SO much better.
This song is hard as f%ck
......to listen to.
Came here for Tony Royster Jr.
Left because of "fist pumping to the grave"
I have the ludwig centennial zep set in Amber and I love them ! All North American maple shells ! Great sounding drums !
that's harder than it looks/sounds! nice work
what a natural.. tony is a beast!!
tony has been a prodigy since he was a child, I think he won the guitar center drum off for the first time at 11 if I remember correctly .
+Roniaaroni no, I was right he won it in 95 and he was born in 84 so he was about 11 when he first won it.
Music Start at 0:50
AMAZING !!!
Jesus, so effing rad!
Amazing!!
LoL. Thats funny. Tell Steve Gadd that when it only took ONE TAKE when he played for Steely Dan on the 'Aja' track.
this is great!!!
nice & great fill..
It comes and goes
you can also see him hit it off at 3:51 when its on, whadda beast!
listening to this after hearing the album version is sad
I like soul wars WAYYYYYY better than " Fist Pumping To The Grave"
if it has to be mastered to be good, it isnt good. people have millions of hits on songs recorded live with a VGA camera phone and we still like it. know what i mean?
Oh... god... At least this song has Tony Royster Jr... Still not enough to save it I am afraid.
It'd be better as just one 3 minute freestyle drum solo.
+Alex Kulp Agreed. that song is terrible. lol
It was a demo, the final was changed
amazing drummer !!!!!
what?! song was nice, didn't expect it for it to pump me up after the first few seconds, then that chorus hit and then I was like hell yeah, live life til its over and do it big and don't let nobody hold you back! well that was my thoughts anyway
I did, indeed, see that. It doesn't change the fact that it's different recordings pieced together. He's still an amazing drummer though!
thank you
and yay i can now see how he's playing that fill before the first chorus, ha :) finally
drums sound straight up tight in that big ass room, damn
Dont know why people are complaining about the song. It sounds fine to me. Yeah the lyrics kinda stop at half way but that cuz its incomplete. but honestly i wish they kept this drum track instead of the new one XD
Wouldn't consider it wasting. He's making music for millions. Millions are enjoying. He's doing what HE wants to do. Doing what HE loves. And making bank.
And also, it's wasting.* There ya go, Pal.
Cool song cool drums
Watch the cymbal topper on his right crash (The Sabian HHX) - this clip has clearly been edited as the topper disappears and reappears throughout the video. This is in addition to the one that files off on his left crash around 3:50.
Powerfull !!!
only thing fist pumpin' to the grave....is this song
His drumming is from different recordings pieced together. Evident by the wing nut on the crash he plays that appears and disappears.
The now released version of this song sounds so much better!!!
lol Awolnation isn't too bad...I dont mind like 2 of their songs... :)
almost all songs are recorded in multiple takes. thats not surprising at all. no one gets everything perfectly the first time, especially on fills and such.
the nunt of that satnd just quitted
"AWESOME... TOTALLY AWESOME!!"
-Jeff Spicoli
He poped the plate.
The Final product is great!
Losing his cymbals cushion at 3:51 - while in different cuts throughout the video it is there and gone and back again magically :P Anyways, great drummer, great performance!
Lol appreciate all music
appreciate all food. appreciate all architecture.
*besides country
Thanks so much man, i've played for 12 years and just now learning rudiments, sad I know.
Yeah! I saw something shoot across the studio - then I backed up the video and saw the felt topper fly off at 3:51.. Oddly, it is there, and not there, all through the video.. then it can be seen flying off of the top of Crash Two at 3:51 .. funny little editing thing.. His drumming is awesome - I gotta go play something now......
Some people are out working, writing, recording, hiring professional players and taking chances; and others are sitting at home on their computer, hating and judging.
great lookin studio though!!!
not even the song that ended up coming out...the final product of this is called soul wars take a look at it before you hate plz :)
Like a boss!
SO BADASS.
The man's a Beast team Tony
great !
hero!!!!
have you heard the final song Soul Wars? Its amazing.
421's on the toms... fuck yeah.
2.37 No Ride, Wingnut on Crash stand. 2.39 Ride, No Wingnut on Crash.
Great video and very interesting. Real shame the audio is out with the picture though!
It's refreshing to see Tony killing it on a 4 piece Ludwig kit
About 3:37 or so, pause and look at the table....there is a pill bottle, the top off and a pill with what looks like powder around it. Were we snortin' a lil' drugs were we Aaron? I guess thats why the album is so good.
