Instead of welding a bolt to the broken bolt, weld a nut to it (if the thread is OK use one the same thread size.
Fill the hole with weld, the heat should break the rust grip. You can also put a larger nut over the smaller nut and weld it together, this is method I've used to remove sheared suspension unit bolts on Tanks which are torqued to 750nm with high strength locktite.
Trust me it works a charm.

I've had some luck with stuck side air valves by thoroughly cleaning them in an ultrasonic cleaner. Use penetrating oil and then heat cycle it a number of times in a pan of boiling water and the freezer. The cold/hot shock will free up the sliding valve. Sometimes it requires repeated ultrasonic cleaning as well. That way you can free up the sliding valve that is currently stuck in oxidized aluminium and other debris. So far I've managed to revive 4 out of 5 of these valves. After you've succeeded coat the valve with a thin spray of PTFE lubricant (and preferably repeat this every now and then).

  • @racer98
    @racer98 3 года назад +6

M539 Restorations on the slide valve heat up some WD40 let it soak overnight in a stainless cup let it chill overnight, it probably rusted inside and needs to be freed up, if not try an electrolysis metal cleaner process with water with baking soda.

Mice hate mint, so a quick and easy solution is to get pepper mint essential oil, and add a couple capfuls to about 500ml of water in a spray bottle. Just spray the solution across doorways, room corners etc, even engine bays. It'll keep them away completely, rather than having them still gaining access/sticking around, and having to catch them

I have an E30 323i which has the same vacuum setup as yours, the only différance is your distributor. The air slide valve can be cleaned. Take it out and clean it the best you can, spray penetrating fluid in the hole where the 2 air hoses attach to let it soak in. After that put it in the freezer and after 5 min put it in hot/boiling water, repeat til you see the little valve close fully only the little square should be open. If you got any questions let me know I have my car for 2 years now and have learned a lot, sometimes the hard way.

Thanks for the video. I would recommend welding a nut to the broken suframe bolt, not a bolt. That way you'll get more heat in to it and better penetration of the weld.. Weld with the welder on very high current to get the bolt and nut red-hot. Immediately after try to remove the bolt while its still hot, should come out like dream. So far this trick has always worked for me in cases like this. Good luck!

A broken sub-frame bolt is obviously a large blot to remove and I like the idea of welding a nut on. For smaller bolts, I've seen left hand drill bits used with great success. Sometimes the drill bit itself removes the bolt without any need to use a screw extractor. I recently bought a set of high quality USA left hand drill bits just in case I needed them one day. One month later I had a broken bolt and they saved the day!

It is always satisfying to watch you replace those with new parts, Delightful episode!
Btw, I fix my Air slide valve by cleaning the cylinder with WD40, putting it in boiling water, so the thermostat expands and closes the valve, then let it cool, sprayed the cylinder again with WD40.
I did this repeatedly, until it reacts quicker, it works for me.
A working air slide valve should gradually close as the coolant warms up, Hope this helps.

I also am restoring old cars such as a 72 VW Beetle (super easy to find ALL the parts for) and an 82 Merc 240D (more difficult to find). I would recommend getting a resin 3D printer and a standard FDM (melty plastic) printer to make some of these rarer plastic parts. You might find them online to download for free. Many of the newer resins are extremely hard wearing and they even have rubberized resins and filaments. Good Luck!

21:00 I've had mice in my house before, so I know they're a friggin nuisance (and a health hazard when they poop everywhere), but that little guy (or girl?) was just adorable. Good on you for using a non lethal solution to that problem... :)

Wow, the episode of bringing engines to life, equal to sparing another living rodent. What a principle, save the engine, spare the life!
Mutual coexistence! Classic car on the road and not pieces in the junk yard. Similarly, rat 🐀 in its biosphere and not dead by chemical or trap.Well done Sreten👏!

My dad taught me a trick for rounded or snapped bolts with a bit of metal left: put a vise grip on and turn them by gently hammering the handle. Was very helpful when i ronded a drain plug and the mechanics wanted to charge me for a new oil pan.

This brings back soooooo many great memories. My first (new) car was a 1988 325is black on tan. What an experience that was! I still remember the very first day I drove it off the lot and back home. Nothing ever feels like your first ;-)

That E30 you have is so sweet. I don't think I will sell mine even after I finish fixing it up,but it is a project on hold for a while now. The last time I got it out of storage it had a rough and uneven idle too, so maybe that valve is the problem that you have an issue with on yours. The next time I get the car out I will check that first after putting some fresh fuel in it. E30s are just such wonderful cars to drive and work on.

Atta boy Sreten, man the E30 looks like so much more of a pain to work on than the E46 or E39 but then again those cars also have their pain points for work like the E46 CCV or E46 oil pan gasket (much of the same thing going on as in this vid). Bet it makes you have smiles for miles when you change the oil pan gasket on the E39!

I recommend spring clamps for all cooling system hoses. They can expand and contract with the hose and prevent cracking. Those screw clamps have no give.

If you want to clean the coolant system, use a dishwasher tablet, put it in hose, let the engine idle for a while, empty the system and then wash the system clean with fresh water until the outcoming water is clear and clean.
