It’s time for an America v Germany drag race!
We’ve got our hands on two Porsches - the Cayman GT4 and the entry-level 718. Alongside them, we’ve got the Ford Mustang Mach 1. Now you may think it’s a bit of an odd line-up, but when you check out the stats, you’ll see there’s a method in our madness!
Let’s start with the GT4. It’s powered by a 4-litre flat-six that can put down 420hp & 420Nm of torque. It’s RWD only and it’s also equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox. In terms of weight, it tips the scales at 1420kg.
Alongside it, we have the 718. Now it’s the entry-level, so it’s only powered by a 2-litre flat-four turbocharged engine that puts down 300hp & 380Nm. It’s also RWD, however, it’s the lightest car here, at 1365kg. But that's not all - it's also the only automatic in the line-up!
Then finally we have the Mustang. It’s got a HUGE engine - a 5-litre naturally-aspirated V8, no less! It also puts down the most power, with 460hp & 529Nn. However, it’s also the heaviest, weighing in at 1807kg, and just like the GT4, it's a manual.

As an owner of a "normal" Cayman PDK all I can say is I'm not surprised. I've owned my car for a lil over 4 years and every day it's a joy to drive and a Super Quick Beast on Socal Freeways. Just flat out Fassst ⚡
how's the gearing? do you stay in 1 and 2 mostly? i'm in socal too.
@atlantean1209 Gearing is great 1-7. Sport mode adds extra horsepower. I mainly use sport on the highway not regular roads. Handling is great too. No complaints also durability and maintenance has been no problems.

@@zshark365 sport mode does NOT add more horsepower. All it does is amplify throttle response to make it FEEL like it does. And it also produces the burps and farts from the exhaust. But it doesn't add more horsepower.
@@atlantean1209 I feel like there is a “valley of no hp” between 1->2.
That bothered me so much that I ended up changing the tune for extra 70hp (which fixed the issue).
Other than that, one of the best cars I’ve driven; other than the Emira.
This just shows how amazing the flat 4 cayman is, had it been the 2.5 S or GTS model I think it would have destroyed the GT4

@@ComedyPlug2 And all because it “sounds terrible”… 😤😤🙄🙄 Sit in a 718 and the 981 in daily traffic, you’ll be happier in the 718. It doesn’t make as much symphonic noise at the top end, but the 981 might as well be an EV at Low speeds where most owners will find themselves driving the car. It’s only when you rev it out to 7000 plus, it sings away. The 718 still rumbles at a standstill and burbles as it pulls away from the lights.
When the pdk is better than having 2 more cylinders 😂

Include a manual T in that comparison. I did and decided that $86,700 as my T is optioned (PCCBs, Active Engine Mounts, LSD) saved me at least $25,000 to the S and $35,000 to the GTS and about half the price as a GT4 and this is without dealer markups. For a working class stuff like myself, it’s the T that won my comparison. I saved so much money over the other variants, it left me most happy I could do a mild tune and outperform all but the GT4 on track. Look at the torque to weight ratio of the cars and you will discover what I did. A manual T with PCCBs and manual seats is under 2900 Lbs and with a mild tune and cat-back exhaust get you 350 foot pounds of torque in a car that weight 2870 lbs is all the car you need. Not to mention it’s mid engine on the same tire sizes as a 911. The grip is astonishing! Porsche did us common people a big favor with the T package. Keep your shekels and tune your own 718 Cayman T.

This race just shows how brilliant DCTs are, shifts so quickly, the little 4-pot could hold its own. Plus, the Cayman is no slouch and contrary to popular belief, sounds good as well, when you’re in it and rumbling at low speed.

This is not just any DCT - this is the PDK, which is the best dual clutch/automatic transmission ever made.

I had a manual Mach 1 before I got my Porsche and they really shine in higher rpms and gears. 0-60 or a drag race is very underwhelming when compared to a Camaro or other v8 competitors but on the highway you’d leave them in the dust.

Y'all need to get someone who knows how to drive in that Mustang. Mustang GTs from 2002 with 285 hp could do a 13.7 qt/mi! That Mach 1 should be perfectly capable of doing a mid 12 no problem, but it takes skill to know how to launch and shift in those manual pony cars. 0/10 for that driver! 👎🏼🤨
I laughed so hard. I do 13.4 seconds in my 2003 Mustang GT. Yet mine has like 160 less hp. The British always mess up Mustang drag times. It’s like all they can handle is automatic mid engine cars!
Its done on purpose. The 718s and m5 lost to a mustang gt at mazda speed way during car and driver's lightning lap. So the mustangs can handle as well . Why do you think they never compared an m4 6speed to a gt350?
An 02 Mustang isn’t worth a shit in this race. It doesn’t help that the Mustang is a god damn land yacht (@ +3,800 ibs) as well. HP isn’t shit when your car weighs as much as the Titanic.
@@Iridiumcosmos this mustang just beat out a $110k BMW M4 on car and drivers lightning lap even though the mach 1 has slower straight line acceleration . It also posted a faster time than a cayman S and BMW M5. You might want to look at more than one review on a car.

Look at the raw data between both cars and judge from there. The 718 GT4 is supposed to rival things like the C8 which it also beat by damn near 20 seconds on the Ring. So what’s the next excuse?

That Mach 1 is a 12.6 all day when Motor Trend or another publication drives it and a 12.0 with the 10 speed auto.
This channel always uses the worst drivers in the Mustangs they test.
The base cayman is a great deal in terms of driving experience, if there was anything in the market that quick but with 4 usable seats (without breaking the bank) I guess a manual M2 would be closer you can get
I have a manual MINI that was dynoed at 300 bhp. I paid $19,000 and put about $20,000 in mods (full bolt one, tune, suspension, and brakes). I know it’s crazy but it’s still cheaper than the base 718. 0-60 in the high 4 seconds
Edit: IDK why you people replying are getting all bent out of shape. I’m just sharing what I did, I’m not saying this is the best option. I didn’t realize I’d offend you clowns with my project car. I can easily make it 400 WHP, yes WHP with an upgraded turbo but I like where it’s at because it’s not the only car I own.

Turbo charged torque and twin clutch auto are mad improvements in straight line performance. My cayman 987 with 5spd manual was slower in a straight line than mates tweaked golf GTD 7spd dsg!
but he's driving home in a 4 cylinder diesel, you drive home in a glorious flat 6. Also stock for stock, even a healthy 2.7 987 should smoke the GTD any day.

Always said that the 4 cylinder Caymen had all the right ingredients to be a outstanding sports car but all the purists missed 6 cylinders. I wonder what they could do with the 4 cylinder as the base for the motorsport version.

@@Thomas-iz4tj They do, but just to be clear, the base 718 in the video doesn't have the Sports Chrono so no Sports + mode, so no LC.
Matt always tries to be in the winning car so it's rarely a surprise which one wins.
Can you redo the test but with all automatic transmissions? It would be interesting to see the difference.
Mach 1 doesn't come in auto
Ironic cause the GT track pack with the auto box is faster than the Mach 1. It was actually a disappointment cause all the sources said it was going to be a 520hp GT350 successor. Would love to actually see a GT350 on carwow that 5.2 flat plane crank V8 is a monster motor

A truly interesting race this one. I bet that on the road, the base cayman is a better more fun drive than the GT4. As for the mustang, big, fat and heavy...just like me and im not fast either lol
I'd been backwards on forwards on if I should trade me 981 for a GT4 and in the end went for a 718 T, I've not looked back. I adore it on the roads, in the pouring rain on a country road it's so much fun.

@@xIcarus227 They're not trying to paint anything. Do you think the driver was deliberately not using full throttle or something? Or how was he doing this painting? The Mustang was just slow. Here in SA the manual Mustangs also got terrible acceleration times.
@@geraldbuys9853 I'm aware that the manual Mustang isn't that fast, but it can do about a second better on the quarter mile. Driver likely can't shift, and it's not the first time a Mustang loses badly on the channel because of it. Check the Mustang vs LC500 video, same story. Why pick a manual against it in the first place? It's not like auto Mustangs are rare.
Carwow always treats non-German brands unfairly, if you watch their reviews you'll understand. It's one of the reasons I don't take anything Mat says seriously.

I see a lot hate thrown at the mustang and chest pounding over Europe and Porsche lol light, track focused 6 cyl and 4 bangers vs a big burly V8. Strange comparison. Porsche is about refinement, tech and efficiency on road and track. Mustang is about muscle, power and the feeling you get in a car listening to the V8 rumble.
C8 corvette costs 58,000 base 90,000ish loaded
GT4 used is 90,000ish
GTS 86,000
If the comparison is apples to apples cost analysis of two cars that are similar in identity, then the test should have shown two cars designed around efficiency and on track performance. No one would argue about a maclaren or Lamborghini versus a Bentley continental GT in a similar race. That doesn’t mean Bentley won’t sell cars lol two different markets. IMHO

I would really love to see a roll race between the base cayman and an automatic mustang. That 10 speed shifts damn near as fast as a DCT and with how close they were on that last race I’d like to see that again with somewhat level gearboxes.
I have a base Cayman (granted it's a manual) and I can confirm that a 10 speed Mustang would annihilate it in a straight line

Motorweek could do 12.4 second 1/4 mile with the regular mustang GT btw. Just a bad driver here. Even in a previous carwow race against the LC500, the GT did 12.6 seconds 1/4 mile.
Also the weather. Drag racing is affected by the cold weather here as you can see. Manual and bad weather are no good for the mustang GT here.

I have a ‘17 Base Cayman. I did the quick mod where you slide one of the exhaust sleeves over to make a gap in between the mufflers. Sounds great. I get compliments on it all the time. Such a fun car!

Do the Euro versions of the Mustangs come with less HP? Could’ve sworn the Mach 1’s have 480HP.
But still, that has to be the slowest Mach 1 I’ve ever seen. In stock form with a 10 speed they run 11.8’s and the GT’s will hit 12 flats to 11.9’s. Now this car was a manual, but Mid-low 12’s shouldn’t be out of the question. 13.7 is just terrible. And don’t get started with the roll racing, the stang should’ve walked both cars.
I believe the Mach 1 is 480 hp. The base GT is 460 hp. The Mach 1 features the gt350 intake (which you can see in the video) that gives it the extra 20 ponies.
I think it depends on what year it was made. Ford had to reduce the hp of the v8 due to emissions requirements.
Only in the US your stats are correct. In the EU, the Base Model is 450 hp and the Bullitt and Mach 1 are 460 hp

I'm not even sure how it's possible to run a 13.7 in a GT. I ran that at 105mph in my V6 mustang 10 years ago with just a tune, with some more mods I was running 12.5 at 115mph. And the fact that the 718 was keeping up with the GT4 also strange... the GT4 looks sick as fuck so it wins on that anyways.

My 2014 mustang GT manual does the quarter in 12.7 bone stock…. Something seems off here
Something was definitely off here. Even the 2005 to 2010 4.6 GT with only 300 horsepower was mid-13s in the quarter with the manual unless you completely blew the launch. ANY new V8 Mustang is a 12 second car, manual or otherwise.... unless you have absolutely no driving skill.

Yeah, as a Mustang GT owner and enthusiast this really doesn't surprise me: The manuals in the mustangs aren't anywhere near as good as the autos, tthey need to be launched WAY harder [4k+ RPM] and they're definitely heavier. The entire platform is a good BASE, but they take some additional work to really make the 5.0 scream..... a few bolt ons, a set of coilovers..... maybe a supercharger kit ; ) And of course the big draw is the reliability compared to most Porsche vehicles [I'm in The States, and for whatever reason they just degrade fast] And I'm sorry, but that V8 growl just KILLS those little engines.....
Mach1 30% heavier and manual (although a beautiful drivers gear box). Grabber Yellow. Beautiful. Mach1 sounds different class. Plus do some small mods and your away!!

13.7 is sad from that Mustang. Either whoever was driving the Mustang isn't a very good drag racer and/or it was spinning much worse than I realized.

What this told me is that for the performance and the sound, I made the right choice by picking a 981CS with the flat 6 NA, no PPF and a PDK. Base 718 probably beats it on the roll but I'll get over it. Never used to like Porsches but as soon as you spend time with one...yeah, they know what they're doing.

I’ve driven 1st gen 718 GTS (4 cyl); and I can tell you this car is POWERFUL; it has so much torque at a very low RPM. And once turbo’s are at full boost it just flies
i can confirm . I have a 2020 718T.. All stock... but its daam fast ... wheelspins 1/2 gear... 300hp... however it's going in for a stage1.5 basically :D into 370 hp... let's see what it will be like

There is a weird situation in the world. Porsches are just so much better than anything else that it really does not make for interesting comparisons. When you add the fact they are also more reliable than anything else, it’s always a blowout. The Porsches could do a track day every weekend, and still get you to work reliably.
Not a mustang fan, but the Mach1 does 1/4 mile in low 12's, might want a driver mod in that car.
That might change the outcome for the drag race from a launch, but it still performed terribly in the roll races, which don’t require any driver skill.
An auto can do that, on a prepped strip, with roll-out...

Next time Matt should drive the Mach 1. That way we know it's being driven by someone who knows how to drive a manual. 1sec difference between the Automatic V8 5L seems to big of a gap.

I’m not all that impressed by the Mach 1 as a mustang owner. It’s basically just a parts bin GT with lipstick and 20 more horsepower, and they sell it like it’s a Shelby.
But I expected it to do better than a base mustang with the 10 speed automatic. The manuals have taller gearing from 2018 and up, so that’s probably part of it too.
There was either something wrong with the mustang or the driver was shit but i've seen GT mustangs run low 12's stock so yeah that Mach 1 Should run high 11's

Very interesting. From this test it seems the normal Cayman is a much better deal than the GT4. The performance difference is negligible, while it's significantly cheaper.
Thats for a manual GT4 though. The gearing on that car is horrible for street use. You would get the PDK in the GT4 and utterly destroy the base Cayman.

The problem is it is a carry over gearbox from Audi that they modified slightly. Couple the carry over ratios designed to suit a 25inch tire and a 6500rpm peak to a 27 inch tire and 8000rpm peak...

That pdk makes all the difference. That mustang is a second off what manual mustangs are doing at the track near me. So I would say it needs a driver mod. Plus the 10 speed mustang is much quicker then the manual.
The current 718 porsche GT4 has a six cylinder naturally aspirated engine with 414 hp- he is hiding this fact that he has the latest generation of the base Cayman and the last generation of the new GT4 - a tad misleading and obviously purposeful.
So....from other videos I saw the auto Mach 1 gets around 12 seconds on the quarter mile. Ok, it's the US version with 480HP. But does 20HP difference and a manual really mean 1.7 seconds on the quarter mile? Or is the UK version broke?
Seems to me the guy in the stang can’t get a good takeoff
@@sa1837 a good muscle car is still only meant for fun so it makes sense why it's a manual and can't really expect a human to get better starts than auto launch

The problem with this video is comparing cars with no where equal value or engineering standards. If you can’t understand how a 70k and 100k usd Porsche beat a by the way base Mach 1 without the handling pack and better tires idk what to tell ya.

Never been a Mustang fan but I fully agree with you. That guy sucked....haha! BUT....the roll races are where the extra horsepower should have showed up....and it didn't. A roll race eliminates most of the driver and weight advantages. I'm a little shocked it didn't do better.

It is easy to blame the driver when they only run a 13.7 I ran 13.9 in a 2001 Mustang GT that only had 260 HP lol if you aren’t at least in the high 12’s in the Mach you are just bad period… Oh and I ran 12.0 in my 2018 Mustang GT but whatever lol.

Also on every other test done on this car on planet earth the mach puts up way better times than the porsche. Even on a road course , look up car and driver's lightning lap . The mustang gt ( slower than a mach 1 ) put down a better time than a 718s and an m5

I have my doubts on that entry level Cayman. Starting with the fact that it does not have a soft limiter, leads me to think that our guy did some tuning to the ECU....
My 19 base car doesn't have a soft limiter.
How can he say that the ford is rather expensive when the entry level porshe is still 20k more.... You get much more for your money with the Mustang especially compared to the price difference.
The base cayman was 10k less, the more expensive one is the GT4
Have both a porsche and mustang. Sometimes not right with that mustang. It's running a full second slower than it should be. Hell it's running v6 mustang times.
Very strong performance from that base 2.0 cayman.
