- Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your Pilot speaking. My name is Tseno and welcome to another classic episode. The BMW Z4 M40i with it's 3.0 L Turbocharged Inline 6 (B58) putting out 340HP and 500NM against the Porsche 718 Cayman S putting out 350HP and 420 NM from it's 2.5 L Turbocharged 4 Cylinder Boxer engine. A little extra weight for the BMW, a little more power for the Porsche and equal conditions mean only one thing... ANOTHER epic drag race, so are you ready? Let's go!

Back in 2020, before buying the Z4 I tried both the Z4 M40i and the Boxter since I was really in doubt between the two. The Porsche is Porsche, nothing to say about that, it definitely handles a bit better and it is probably quicker (you don't really notice in real life). However, the interiors feel outdated compared to the Z4, and the Boxster has a 4 cylinder vs 6 cylinder of the Z4, plus the Z4 is a much better daily driver, and costs much less. Since I needed a car that is fun to drive during the weekend, and brings me to the office during the week, and I don't need a car for racing on a track, I went for the Z4 and I do not regret at all my choice, since after 4 years that thing is still putting a smile on my face every time I drive it. Having saying that, if you want a truly sport car to bring on track, then definitely Porsche is the way to go

Yes, each person has different preferences, so choose to buy what you like best. Don't buy according to what other people like. Let yourself be the one to make the purchasing decision. Then you will never be disappointed with any model of car if you like it.
I had Porsche before and loved it. But I bought the m40i this time for the creature comforts, plus being a kick ass little sports car. One car cannot do everything well..ever.
When Porsche released their first 4 cyl turbo in 25years it got huge criticism. Now we see how clever they were and we are finally coming around to its x factor. Well done again Porsche 😱

The race has to be, Porsche Boxster vs BMW Z4, because the Porsche Cayman is 200 kilograms less heavy than the Z4, the direct rival of the Z4 is the Porsche Boxster or vice versa, the race must be, coupe vs coupe or, failing that, convertible vs convertible, this way it would be an equal race.
Cayman reeling in the Z4 false start was amazing
The BMW Z$ M40i, B58 makes 382HP and has a 0-60(0-62/0-100km)time of 3.9 sec. That should make it win this drag race. not sure what happened here. All for $20 less , better equipped for the money
That’s nice. What’s the price of both as equipped though? Also, not every drive is going to be a drag race. How are they both to actually live with???

I drove both cars. More torquey with the US version of the M40.. had problems keeping it straight. But the 718s that I own I never have traction problems. So I think the 718S would beat the US M40 in a drag race, too.

My M 40i here with 382hp ….I think would certainly be tight race. 42hp more is a lot in a small car.
@@shaunmcinnis1960 I believe the M40 100lbs+ heavier, note it has to carry the convertible motors. So the extra HP would be nullified. Also, on the dyno the 718S is 20HP above the official stats. Both are nice cars, I actually almost bought the M40 a week before I bought the 718S.
The Porsche won't beat it in a short race the real Z4 M40i comes with 382HP and does 0-60 in 3.8s that's 0.2s faster than the M3 of the same year. They are not matching the right configs these reviews are either paid, or useless.

@@Muleyasama Nice. I’ve been looking at used 718 Cayman S’s. Used car prices are slightly going back to normal. Are you going for a apr tune? Soul exhausts also help the sound alooot. Sounds really good
@@verde629 definitely go for it, you won’t regret it! And yes prices are calming the f down 🤣. Yes APR stage 1 tune! To be fair a non tuned S can do 0-60 in 3.6 seconds on a good road. So underrated! And if you get the sports exhaust, I promise you might not even wanna get the soul performance exhaust

So in the US the Z4 has 382 hp and 340 hp in Europe? Is that true? I just got a new Z4 m40i and it is a great car. I have zero experience with Porsche. Next time I will go Cayman for sure.
Before I bought the new Z4, I was choosing whether I should get the Z4 or the Porsche Cayman or Boxster. The only reason I chose the BMW, is because of the tech and beautiful luxury interior. But I'm definitely going to be choosing Porsche next time around.

Z4 m40 is SOOOO restricted stock man. With a Akrapovic exaust with 200cell kit and a ECU remap u can easily reach 400hp , and the car changes DRASTICALLY
718s only remap is 400+
I got 405 and 620nm on my Z4 m40i with just a tune.
with a dp and tune it would be closer to 500
The US version Bimmer, 382hp would probably have taken it.

I never realize that the Z4M40i was 340HP? I thought all M40is were 374HP. It seems strange to me.
I think these kind of races between M performance and Porsche S/GTS are also fun.
For example X4M40i vs Macan S/GTS(not the Turbo GTS but the real GTS), X5/6M50i vs Cayenne S/GTS and the M850i/M550i vs Panamera 4S/GTS
There're always debates about whether a Porsche S or GTS should compete with M Performance models, I think both parties have solid reasons.

I mean ya the Z4 isnt sold as a sports car its sold as a convertible GT car. Plus the new z4 starts at 65k and the Caymen S starts at 82k. Hahaha
Also wierd that the z4s time to 60 is 3.9 (claimed) and Porsches is 4.4sec (claimed) which is huge but here the Porsche is faster....hmmmm🤔

Maybe get some competent regular drivers for your tests. Having
poor drivers tends to lessen the validity of your tests/races and impacts your likes and is detrimental to increasing your subscriber baseline
Sometimes we just need to have some fun, perfection is not always the best way forwards, otherwise I agree with you and always trying to improve with the guys 😊
I beg to differ. Having the owners of the cars drive them and including the fail starts is what makes the videos entertaining and the tests trustworthy. 🤷🏻♂️

@@scottrobson4097 of course with all my respect to the drivers, but how profesional you are supposed to be in order to hit the strip with a 12 sec car with auto tranny? As we can see the 60 feet are under 2 sec of both cars, so even traction on the start is more than great. What else do you expect from a pro driver? Mid 11s from a high 12 sec car?
@@scottrobson4097 true, but in the real world things are not perfect and results vary. There are plenty of people doing “perfect” drag races. If I’m looking to buy a car, I’ll be curious to see both type of videos

The Z4 40i only weighs 110lbs more than an equivalent A91 Supra 3.0.
Thats only 50 kilos. Where did you get 150-200 kilos from?
If you compare the US A91 3.0 Supra, its still not as quick as a 718 S.

You’ll spend less to make more power with the B58 and it is already quite a bit more powerful when both are stock.

i owned a 991.2 porsche 911, and switched to a 2019 Z4 m40i. I prefer a lot of things in the BMW. the Porsche is better for track use, racing. The BMW is better in all the rest.
