Um, not so much. There's always enough news of some kind for late night show hosts to pull from. With Trump does it make it easier? Sure. But to think they would be nothing without Trump material is just completely shortsighted and ignorant.
Jimmy and Stephen don't understand that comedy doesn't have to be about politics all the time. It i such a turn off to watch them complain about Trump on a regular basis.
Jimmy Fallon is good on this, he doesn't bring up politics and keeps things about the guest and having fun.

But as it relates to now,Trump does is so unprecedentedly stupid and bad, you could argue some believe it's a disservice not to make fun of it and bring those things to light.
In any case, as you mentioned, there are some people like Fallon who don't go into politics as much. So you at least have a choice to go somewhere else.
Colbert has had a show and career WAY before Trump the clown became material gold. It isn't like there isn't enough material on capital hill besides the Trump deluge. They're just capitalizing on the clown material that Trump provides.

Well something did happen to Dennis Miller. He was doing the liberal comedian thing for SNL. When he departed, I think his transformation to sanity occurred a bit over time. Libs are constantly being fed crap they already believe so they don't bother questioning reality as they see it. Couple that with being unable to cope with things one does not wish to hear, libs grow old believing the same crap they've known all their political (as such) lives.

I've only recently become aware of Dennis through his hilarious podcast exchanges with Norm macDonald. I wasn't aware of his political leanings and honestly didn't care. Jimmy thinks it's weird to be a conservative American comic when the real oddity is that Dennis appears to be center right and free from the bile of the majority who cling together at opposite ends of the political spectrum, scared shitless to take a step towards center ground and sanity. He comes across as a very affable and intelligent guy.

Take the politics out of the equation.....Dennis Miller and Bill Maher are two very smart men and great comedians. I don’t mind a little political humor in my comedy. Laughing to these guys is a great escape for me and love the entertainment value. What happened to us where we can’t even take a little jab at each other politically without it turning into a verbal comment bloodbath? I am all for free speech, but I am much more for civility.

I had mononucleosis in college and could do little more than lie on my bed and watch a Dennis Miller stand up concert over and over. I wrote down all the references I didnt know and looked them up. Three pages of post it notes..he used to have an HBO show called Dennis Miller live That I used to faithfully watch every week. Good times

Dennis Miller was probably the most erudite comendians out there! I learned something during the most mondane ofinterviews or performances! IMO he lost his mind going conservative all of a sudden! I had a real problem with that unfortunately and haven't listened to him in decades! It was the same with actor Ron Silver! Brilliant liberal, but then began backing a-hole conservatives! Take the politics out of the equation.....Dennis Miller and Bill Maher are two very smart men and great comedians. I don’t mind a little political humor in my comedy. Laughing to these guys is a great escape for me and love the entertainment value. What happened to us where we can’t even take a little jab at each other politically without it turning into a verbal comment bloodbath? I am all for free speech, but I am much more for civility.

I only watched them this year for 3 reasons: No host (great idea), Queen opened the show, support "Bohemian Rhapsody" movie.
This is actually really great. Someone from the other side that Jimmy seems to respect. I think it is ignorant and self righteous of Kimmel to be so surprised that a comedian can be conservative, but at least he voiced the question to Dennis Miller who fielded it nicely and can maybe talk some sense to Jimmy. Dennis is right. Conservatives can act like the elders in Footloose, but liberals have actually taken up that judgemental mantel in the last 15 years or so. The left has become the moralistic finger shakers at their opponents and everyone is sick of it. And it really isn't as edgy, rebellious and brave to be a liberal comedian like it was way back. There is nothing too daring or shocking about it.

I've been trying to give out the same message lately, don't judge/value people on the D or R "after their name". Don't play the labeling game, branding unknown people based on the merits of the worst people you can think of, that's REALLY dangerous.
