The only reason this went so well is before his appearance Nathan built an entire replica of the Burbank studio where Conan's show is filmed and hired actors to portray Conan, Andy, all the rest of the staff, and Susan, so he could carefully rehearse every potential outcome of his appearance. Unfortunately the one thing he did not anticipate was Conan's producer airing the backup clip by mistake and, not having a roadmap drawn out for that scenario, he was unable to recover.

This whole bit is clearly scripted anyways, but part of why it works is Conan doesn't say too much, and shows everything through his expression, he lets the joke sink in overtime and gives Nathan all the punchlines.

Conan straight up saying “damn you’re funny” at the end is totally an honor. Conan has been talking with some of the greatest comedians of the 90s all the way to the 2010s and he rarely ever compliments them like that and when he does it often doesn’t sound nearly as genuine as that did. Nathan fielder is almost definitely among the top 1000 comedians of all time and he undoubtedly deserves every bit of attention he gets
