She's a huge fan of Nathan for You. She used to tweet about the show a lot.
The only reason this went so well is before his appearance Nathan built an entire replica of the Burbank studio where Conan's show is filmed and hired actors to portray Conan, Andy, all the rest of the staff, and Susan, so he could carefully rehearse every potential outcome of his appearance. Unfortunately the one thing he did not anticipate was Conan's producer airing the backup clip by mistake and, not having a roadmap drawn out for that scenario, he was unable to recover.

Boy, he really let that "guard cat" bit marinate. He has such a good feel for dialing up the discomfort.
The sense that everyone knows exactly how he's going to finish the obvious joke, while he pauses unnecessarily before delivering it tepidly, is one of the funniest parts of this whole clip

It's like he has good bad-people sense. It's like how sensitive people can grasp how to make people feel welcomed and comfortable, and Nathan mastered how to use that skill set to make people uncomfortable and wanting to leave.

All three of them play their part so well here. Nathan talking about some boring story as if it's hilarious, Conan looking at him in contempt, and Susan just smiling and being Susan. It's comedy gold.

Nathan is the most unique and smartest comedians I've ever seen. Not even just on his show, but every appearance he's ever made has been this carefully orchestrated, hilarious bit.

This is consistent with one of the recurring themes on Nathan For You. How Nathan goes to these extreme lengths and machinations to solve a problem that's so much smaller than the lengths and machinations.
If you haven't checked out "The Rehearsal" on HBO yet...just you wait. Creating absurd lengths and machinations to solve small problems is literally the thesis of the show.

It's not just the deadpan aspect, it's the timing. Drawing things put for a couple extra beats to make everyone uncomfortable is so perfect. The "Guard cat" line being a great example

The thing that makes Conan so good is that he understands when his guest is doing a bit... and he plays along and plays his part to perfection, the way he just stared at Nathan was hilarious, I don’t know if this bit would’ve worked on any other talk show.
All guests on talk shows prepare and the hosts are in on all of it. They don't wing it. The goal is to appear as though they wing it.

@@rebeccahicks4949 I think it's the opposite to that the original comment said at the start, fallon and kimmel would completely overreact to try and sell the bit, they'd exclaim loud interactions to try too hard to look surprised and would try and make the joke swing the attention back to them. This whole bit is clearly scripted anyways, but part of why it works is Conan doesn't say too much, and shows everything through his expression, he lets the joke sink in overtime and gives Nathan all the punchlines.
Literally everytime I've seen a bit involving fallon I have to turn it off because he always cuts people off with his own jokes which ruins any semblance of pacing, and is terrible at faking a real reaction to scripted moments

Even though Conan is clearly in on the bit, he acts his part out so well! When Nathan talks about his cats, Conan's facial expression and demeanor are flawless, depicting a complex cocktail of emotions. I love every second of this video.

You KNOW that this whole bit "worked" for Conan to give him that compliment. You know that Nathan would have contacted the producers and run it by them, and they would have slaved for hours on how to logistically make it happen. The fact that all the elements came together was the capper for Conan. It makes HIS show look good as well.

Yes, that was the joke, which absolutely NO ONE in the audience got. Conan is easily the most talented pure comedian out there, and he has the absolute DUMBEST TBS viewership. What a joke. You can see Conan's face just in disgust of the dumbness, as they cheer on his cat story. The audience's role was to boo the cat story, they didn't get it.

I feel like Conan's audience would be familiar with Nathan at this point. If not, his dry sense of humor was pretty apparent. Conan straight up saying “damn you’re funny” at the end is totally an honor. Conan has been talking with some of the greatest comedians of the 90s all the way to the 2010s and he rarely ever compliments them like that and when he does it often doesn’t sound nearly as genuine as that did. Nathan fielder is almost definitely among the top 1000 comedians of all time and he undoubtedly deserves every bit of attention he gets

Conan usually caveats when something is unscripted, like "Folks I have no idea what is going on" or "this was not part of the plan". I would guesstimate that 95% of the rest of the time, like this time, is scripted and Susan was brought in under the show's dime.

Conan said that his vision for his show is for it be a talk show where everything is just gradually coming apart, so I imagine he loved this bit that Nathan came up with.
Any other talk show, the host would keep interrupting Nathan and being like "BUT THAT'S SUSAN SARANDON!" and just not letting the joke play out organically, and I truly believe that.
