I love that this "parable" has been made into a video! It has always been a favorite of mine!
Just when I start preparing my Seminary lesson, these most precious BYU talks come up ... always right on point, exactly what I was thinking to prepare the lesson on. I stay awake late at night sometimes to subtitle them for my students and feel such a gratitude for my Mission, served in the US so I could learn the language well enough to deliver these messages to my beloved students. Grateful to our leaders and teachers. Grateful for the Restoration of the Gospel. Greetings from Switzerland 🇨🇭

Every effort must be made, we must fight to be perfect....everyday. (knowing we wont be). Then is his grace sufficient for us. If that model is followed it is guaranteed that you make it home. Some people don't like this stance, but I promise you that getting home is no casual endeavor. But it can be done.
We are not to be perfected and then come unto Him. We are to come unto Him and then be perfected.
Many times the most inspirational stories are the simplest.
I love this story. And just like the mother giving the little girl pennies for trying. God makes it so that we can try and do our very best. Like pennies God gives us his Son, Priesthood Power, Temples, Prophets and so on. Without God it would be impossible for us to have anything to give our Lord. The "pennies" we get for trying were his to begin with. And we need to cherish every penny he gives us.
I homeschool my children and part of their Religious Education and English is watching a video like this Inspiring Short and writing a reflection of what they have learned from it. Thanks so much for putting this up. It's helping me and my children build our testimonies of our Saviour. Keep it up! :)

I loved hearing Brother Robinson's voice narrating this story. He was a great man who influenced me beyond measure. I miss him, and treasure this and other lessons he taught about our Savior.

The Atonement makes up ALL THE DIFFERENCE.
Christ makes the difference bc he performed the Atonement. The Atonement has no power without Christ. The Atonement is an Act Christ performed. Christ liberates us. He freed us from death death we can overcome sin by following Him. This act is called the Atonement. The power is on Christ. Talk from President Nelson in 2017 General conference expands on it.
Christ doesnt make up the difference, he is the difference. Check out Brad Wilcox his grace is sufficient.
What an inspiring message this is? Oh how blessed we are as children of God to deserve such unconditional love. Heavenly Father deserves all the glory. We surely can not on our own. Thank you so much for sharing.

I really liked the simplicity of the parable until later in life I realized that as Brad Wilcox says "Christ doesn't make up the difference, Christ is the difference."
The book of mormon plainly teaches that man can not merit anything of himself. Alma 22:14.
If we think works save us like the change in a jar buys a bicycle we are wrong and have greatly misunderstood the plan of salvation.
This is exactly right. We do not save up and contribute $0.60 towards the $250 bike (i.e., our salvation). No, Christ pays the entire $250. He doesn't want our 60 cents, and he does not expect nor want us to try to save up over eternity to pay him back.
I don’t believe Christ makes up the difference. Brad Wilcox teachings about grace and that “Christ is the difference” is more complete and accurate. For me, this bike parable needs to be forgotten like Mormon Doctrine by McConkie.
It's so easy to misunderstand how grace and works mesh together. I love the way Elder Renlund explained it in April 2020. The work still matters, because it's how grace is activated, but it's still grace that has all the merit. Seems paradoxical, but I believe it's true. No other way could work.
And I felt similarly to you when I realized this parable could be interpreted the wrong way. Now I think of the 60 cents as the way we show our desire to receive grace - it doesn't actually contribute at all to the price of the bike, but God invites us to offer our whole souls as an offering unto him (which is vanishingly small compared to all that God gives us).

I love this story! However, the music is too loud at times to hear the speaker.
It is often said the chief priests and scribes didn't understand the parables
Yet in the parable of the husbandmen and the vineyard
It states plainly these understood the parable was about them
So why parables if they were understood by the chief priests and scribes after all?
Well if you were a doctorate of scripture and someone gave you a child's Sunday School parable
Hence they were offended
Then also it had only been about 18 years since these same doctorates were dazzled by the advanced understanding of a 12 year old. Whom as He was now 30 should be expected to totally dazzle them gave them child's Sunday School parables❤

This story is touching, but we need to know that Christ pays the full bill and not the bill above the 61 cents.
To suggest that Christ “makes up the rest,” as if any of our efforts are worthy, is to idolize self. It’s not a matter of not having enough good works, our issue is sin and that we are broken by nature. No amount of good works or “pennies” could ever sum to our salvation, because the only way to be saved is to be perfect and we are not. Good works and striving to be Christlike come as fruits of the spirit AFTER the free gift of salvation. Getting those out of order is a dangerous error

This isn't quite how grace works. Brad Wilcox does a great job respectfully showing how it's inaccurate in his book the continuous atonement and His Grace is Sufficient
This parable is the opposite of the Savior's actual doctrine. Christ commanded men to be perfect, and loved the rich young man that he met who had kept all the commandments from his youth up. This parable turns his mercy into a mockery whereby man may perpetually live badly, and then still gain salvation. The point of this parable is that men may be saved in their sins, but Christ's doctrine was spoken by Alma when he said "Yea, I say unto you come and fear not, and lay aside every sin, which easily doth beset you, which doth bind you down to destruction" and when he said "Therefore, prepare ye the way of the Lord, for the time is at hand that all men shall reap a reward of their works, according to that which they have been-if they have been righteous they shall reap the salvation of their souls, according to the power and deliverance of Jesus Christ; and if they have been evil they shall reap the damnation of their souls, according to the power and captivation of the devil."
This story needs adjusted. The Grace of the Atonement isn't applied at the end. It is applied from start to finish. The LDS generally have a poor understanding of this principle and how the Grace of the Atonement affects everything, all the time.
I'm LDS, and I understand it WELL, but thank you for your concern😘💗
Something that's always bothered ME, is when people take a parable and they try to make it work on every level. It doesn't. It's not supposed to. It is supposed to teach ONE aspect of truth. I once made a comment to a friend about how Christ must have felt when he was shunned and ridiculed for his standards and beliefs, my friend simply replied, no you don't, you're not perfect. Well that clearly wasn't the point I was trying to make, was it, .....she took it out of context to be rude and appear right. Of course we are meant to pick up our cross and follow Him, because if the world hates us, it hated Him first. That doesn't make us perfect, it just gives us a taste of what he went through.
