I'm really glad I listened to this speech. Thank you, David French! I agree that we are living in a friendship desert. I want all who come into contact with me to feel their Savior's love for them, even if we disagree politically. I have some very very strong opinions and this will be challenging for me to do, but I feel that my Savior has called me to do so. So I will try my best :-)
I love to read his articles and hear him talk. Im a Christian and I dont have near the love love he speaks of for many christians and avoid them like the plague. He just oozes warmth, intellect & talent. Thank you!
I ran from the Catholic Church for the last 15+ years of my almost32 years of life… I wish I had speakers and leaders like Mr French bc I feel if I had I wouldn’t had lost all that time without a faith . He’s so into and loves his faith but isn’t a “far gone” in the head Christian/preacher like many have turned into, on those pulpits. So grateful an ad of his came across my fb cuz now I’m watching his videos ❤
What a great speech. Very needed. And something no one talks about. UNIFIED IN CHRIST. ALL ARE CHILDREN OF GOD. WE ARE ALL BROTHERS AND SISTERS. Only Christ's teachings can unify. Love is supreme.
17:20 "When there's hatred and division and animosity, that's when followers of Jesus Christ hear their music." I love this! get out there and stop the hate! Let's find things in common, let's bring love and compassion.
‘Crisis of affection’ is such a perfect summation for what we are dealing with currently. I feel like there is this numbing for actual faith/religion, and it’s being replaced with faith in government/a specific leader. We’re finding our purpose in politics!!
Interesting. This is also why I’ve never desired to live in Utah as a Latter Day Saint, especially central Utah where Latter Day Saints are the majority. I’ve always appreciated the diversity and friendship that comes from living where we are from all walks of life. And as an outsider to Utah, I could definitely see the “too many people in one area becoming extreme” thing every time I visited. Great thoughts, thank you. Loved your story about Leo at the end. ❤
That is why employing the complete name of the Church exemplifies the answer. The solution is Christ, and -- and the Latter-day Saints exercising true charity.
A lot of people liked this talk. It’s much easier to talk about than to do. You can be pretty sure that the other side doesn’t want to destroy the country… you can also be sure there are some shared values. Don’t “other” your fellow citizens. MOST importantly, don’t stand by when people of your own political stripe attack them unfairly. This is the MOST important thing you can do to heal a divided nation.
Are we not going to talk about the fact that the early Michael Keaton Batman wasn’t the Dark Knight, that was Christian Bale. Haha not trying to be nit picky. Enjoyed the talk! Just pointing out that I’m old enough to remember both movies, and I’m a fellow nerd and not gonna let that by me 😂
I'd love to see a true conservative Christian political commentator invited to BYU. I appreciated Mr. French's comments, but in his career, he speaks and writes in a way that is very divisive. While I am very welcoming and value learning from many who don't believe as I do, I would appreciate a balanced approach, especially for our student body at the Church's university.
I just heard of him from this speech. Is there anything in this talk you found particularly reductive. I really hope I don’t sound condescending by asking because I’m not trying to be. Just asking from the perspective of someone who doesn’t really get into political stuff and genuinely curious.
Stop it. David has called out hypocrisy in the Evangelical movement, and has suffered greatly for it. That's not divisive; that's standing up for what's right.
I totally agree! It's not about hatred, it's about sin. The Book of Mormon flat out tells us that it's about the Gadianton Robbers taking over. So now, standing up for what is right is now all of a sudden hatred. Really the problem is sin and the solution is repentance. This is the same solution that has existed to the same problem since Earth was created. Cain wants to kill Abel. They killed Christ. There was a Holocost. It's all sin. Repentance is the solution.
Well meaning brother. To simplify further. It’s “pride” on both sides of the aisle. Christ is the answer. Christs love. His love is far from the world’s definition. Christs love includes calling us to repent, to change, to flee from our unrighteous thinking, reverse our embracing of now accepted evil concepts, to improve and become more like Him, loving liberty, loving moral agency.
Excellent talk! I agree with his comments and that we should love one another! As Christ stated, “pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you.”Matt. 5:44 Can you imagine a world where everyone was a loving neighbor? 🥰
Thank you for teaching this important concept about The law of group polarization and how when people of like minds gather, they tend to become more extreme. May we as an LDS culture guard ourselves from falling into this pattern of thinking.
“What is the solution to our crazy, hate-filled politics? It isn’t one party winning and another party losing; it isn’t your favorite politician winning and your most-hated politician losing; it is actually replacing alienization and loneliness with connection and love. The reason behind the reason for our politics is the lack of connection.”
No friend, the reason is because so many, many people have been deceived to think good is evil and evil is good. We need the true Jesus that requires righteous living and repentance not the teddy bear Jesus that loves everyone and excuses their disobedience and every "choice" is equal. It's not. It can't be.
David, it's like you were hand-picked by Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Prophet and President Russell M. Nelson who has been begging us to be Christlike and peacemakerd. I've listened to you on the Bulwark and speaking with Tim Alberta and others. Thank you for your discipleship and bringing this timely message to BYU
Unfortunately we will be hated and persecuted for being like Christ, as He was. He went about doing good, and was hated for it. Know who you serve and fear not, the coming days will be a test of our faith.
I disagree. People from different political persuasions disagree but don’t hate each other. Pollsters represent what they’re trying to find…..they poll those who represent the bias they want to perpetuate. Americans are the most tolerant people on the planet. Again, I strongly disagree with the premise of this address.
He's not making the claim - he's reporting what Pew Research is discovering by asking people to describe their own feelings about the other side... and specifically about 'extreme' positions on the other side. You can disagree, but Pew Research has the data.
I read the phrase 'contempt' about the current political division, meant as 'I'm not only right, and you're wrong, but you are also evil.' This, the article stated, gives people the feeling that can excuse their own (bad) behavior, because they are 'the good guy'. I thought it was enlightening. Of course, we should reach out with kindness and a listening ear, even if we disagree.
Actually, North Americans tend to be arrogant and unaware due to the lack of international perspectives. When you live someplace like Europe, you tend to be much more aware of other international perspectives because international residents are everywhere.
Nephi never hated Lemuel and Laman; and Peter never hated the Pharisees; and red states have hobbies and life is too short to hate; you are wrong, Mr. French. People who attend church, any church, live by a higher active spirit of community and service. One is active or re-active. USA has dance, golf, math, baseball, hockey, faith, poetry, concerts, nature hikes, trips to beach, community, marriage and bar-b-q's.

Gotta say, not loving the instant jump into the middle of the talk. I prefer to skip it and go straight to the actual beginning, but it’s annoying since there isn’t an obvious break in between.
God's love is not unconditional. He has a perfect love for His children, but He does have conditions and expectations from us. David French doesn't come off as convincing to me.
I see what you are saying. I think the difference here is worth and worthiness. God wants to give us all his blessings because he loves us by default. But in order to receive all that we has prepared for us, we need to be live the commandments he gave us that not only prepares us to receive those blessings but qualifies us. Much like a bank doesn't just give out a 1 million dollar credit line as soon as you open a bank account. We show God that we are responsible enough for 1000 and he gives us 10000. Then we become able to handle that and he gives us more as well. I know banks and "love" don't really work in this analogy but I hope I get my thoughts across lol I agree that God does have conditions and expectations. But that doesn't mean his love is conditional. He wants to us to grow because he loves us.
God's blessings are not unconditional... but God's love is unconditional. Are you a parent? You love your children no matter what they do. Their behavior can tear you apart, but you love them.
